  5. I feel that I look sick also. My surgery was 10 months ago, and I've lost 100 pounds. In the beginning, the change came quickly, probably after only 30 pounds. It was shocking to see myself with a drawn face. I'm 55 and 100 pounds less, so the skin on my entire body is wrinkly and sagging. Before the surgery I was one of those who people would tell, you have such a pretty face... Now, I look old and sick. I've always had a weird crooked nose, and it now looks really weird and crooked. I suppose the nose thing is the biggest surprise, I knew people who'd had the surgery and was expecting the sagging skin. I don't like my face now either, and thqat surprises me since I thought that movie stars who are skinny looked so beautiful. Why are their faces not guant? I guess it was a trade off. I'm hearing the advice of water, and that's probably the best thing I can do, I don't stay as hydrated as I should. Hope your face (and not the rest) plumps up soon! :w00t:

    Weight Gain

I think it's because the last 10-20lbs is always the most difficult to lose. I also think that it was my first set point from high school and my body thought it needed to settle there and defend that new position. I also know that it happened in the sophomore phase and this is the phase where we notoriously start living life again. So some of it could be that I slacked off in my choices with a greater frequency of "treat" meals when going out? And before, I cooked almost everything at home. So I think it's probably a combination of metabolic stuff + behavior. Also, that chart doesn't look like it, but the line is actually down at the 130-135 level. It looks more like it's 140ish. Here's a close up of it for the last 90 days.
  7. I'm right with you! Surgery date 2/19. So excited, good luck to you and I wish you tons of sucess on your new journey!
  8. Began my two week pre-op liquid diet today. I've been so apprehensive about this particular step. Not the surgery though! I ate a healthy dinner last night. Woke up excited. I now have only 13 days, 19 hours, and 34 minutes until surgery!

    Gas Pain

I was banded on 10-13 and had really bad left shoulder pain that day, I took gas x strips to the hospital and took them every 4 hours. In addition to walking alot they seemed to help. Now I am taking the gas x capsules, I like them alot better. My gas pains are all but gone now, I am still swollen but not having the pain. Try the gas x and keep moving...congrats on your band!!

    slippage and erosion

Question for you, when you eroded what were your symptoms? What led you to know something was wrong? Was it a serious erosion or the beginning of one? Would you mind providing more details? Also, do you think there is any chance at all that your band was too small for your stomach or did you have a fill that in looking back... might have been too tight? Sorry, I really want to gather information on erosion so anytime I have an opportunity to ask, I do. The thinking used to be that NSAIDs caused erosion, then they discovered that wasn't true. Then they thought it was coffee and caffeine, that wasn't it either. Then they thought it was smoking. Nope, not that either. Now they think it is caused by a band that is too tight. Either the surgeon put a band on that was too small for the patient or that the patient got a fill that was too tight for too long. This is the theory that makes the most sense to me. Ever see an abused dog that has a collar on that is too tight? After months of this the collar starts to erode into their neck and it has to be surgically removed and repaired. The same thinking could apply here as well. Also, why is it that some docs have such a high erosion rate (7-10%) and other docs have such low erosion rates (my doc is 0.0016%)? That kind of a difference can't be the patient base the doc attracts, that sounds like surgeon issues to me. The numbers lead me to believe that. Of course, then there is infection. Poor sterile technique during a fill can cause a port infection and the infection can travel up the tubing to the actual band. My doc has one eroded patient. The patient had her band for a few years and went to a US RN for a fill. The fill was clearly too tight and the patient knew it. She could barely drink liquids but she refused a slight unfill as she was losing weight like crazy and wanted to get to goal faster. So she went for months and months with a fill where she could hardly drink Water. I suspect her "too tight" fill is likely what caused her erosion from hearing her story on the boards but clearly, nobody will ever know for sure. But this begs the question... is it the patient or the doc? How is it that my doc has one erosion in 1600+ bands and some other docs have a 4-10% erosion stat when according to Inamed global stats are 1.3%? If their infection stats were that high in comparison to other docs we would blame the doc. I'm not so sure it is any different here with the exception of fills that are too tight and the patient won't get a slight unfill. I really question if you might have misunderstood this. I think you might have it backwards. Erosion is currently thought to be the doc's fault in general. Slips are typically the patient's fault. Not always, but usually. People that don't chew well, take bites too big, PB a great deal, keep fills that are too tight, etc... they are the folks that tend to slip more than others. I think there are some slips that nobody knows why it happens. But many times slips happen in people that didn't follow the post op diet, they don't chew food well, they eat things they know they can't tolerate, overeat, etc. Another reason I suspect you might have the slips/erosion backwards is that it isn't the sutures that really hold the band into place, it's the scar tissue that forms around the band. The stomach is sewn up and over the band but the scar tissue that forms during the post op diet is what really secures the band into place. Theoretically, you should be able to remove the sutures after the scar tissue has formed and the band should stay in place.

    Preop weight loss-too much?

Yes indeed. I copied and pasted this from another thread 9/10.I’ll follow up with more details later. I never did the math on this before. 8/18-8/19 I lost an average of 6.1 pounds per month. I had surgery at 204 and I lost s.l.o.w. I think one month I only lost 2-3 pounds eating less than 900 calories a day. I did lose it though!
  13. Has anyone had a fill done by a radiologist? I saw my surgeon today and he suggested this. I had my surgery on April 22, 2009 and have lost 30 pounds. I am at 7.5 cc's in my 10 cc band, and after not losing any weight in the past 12-weeks, today at my weigh-in I had gained one pound. My surgeon said the radiologist will empty my band completely and then completely re-fill it. Then, I will drink some liquid while the radiologist slowly removes the saline from the band. I guess it will be a good way to ensure the band has not slipped and is still working correctly. Just wondering if anyone else has had this done. Thanks everyone!!

    Low Carb Pizza

I've made low carb pizzas using low carb tortillas with olive oil Pasta sauce cheese and turkey pepperoni and it only takes 10 mins to cook!
  15. Does anyone know about a doctor named Chris Sanborn? He is coming to the Chattanooga, Tn area from a military hospital in Kentucky. Please anyone knows about him I need to know asap!! I have already had my surgery ,but I have a friend of mine that is needing surgery. This doctor is coming to the Chattanooga area and we need to know what his surgery results have been. My friend is very scared about the surgery period and then having to use a new doctor over the one that has been doing surgery in the area well over 10 years. So if there is anyone that knows anything about this doctor please let me know..
  16. My doctor did not put me on a pre-op diet, but advised I should try to lose 10-15 pounds before surgery and go low-carb and kick the sugars so my liver could shrink a little. I ate the foods I'm eating now, high-protein, etc. practice food journaling, and then went on a liquid diet 48 hours before surgery. What you had sounds fine to me for 10-days out, just get back on the horse and try again tomorrow. Shrinking the liver is very important, it can prevent them from being able to do the surgery at all. The stomach is kind of hidden behind/beside the liver, and they have to be ever so careful not to damage it.

Band removed (what diet should i try)

I really do wish you the best. It's probably going to be harder to lose and take longer too. I use myfitnesspal to track calories. I've logged every single day for 10 months. I actually have more guilt about not logging than having a cookie. I have found myself getting out of bed at night to add something I might have forgotten. Hopefully you can find the mindset that you had when you first got the band. That feeling that you can do it.

Advice from the experts please? :-)

Yes the dietitian was especially focused on protein when we talked! Did you find it hard to get in all the protein you needed at first? I'm really curious how your diet and typical day is now, 10 years later? I've heard that about the 2 step DS being safer as well. I've also seen a lot of posts and discussions in the forums about doctors recommending the 2 step simply to make more money. I have no idea which is more accurate! I want the one step because I know getting insurance to cover another surgery will be a nightmare... If I do go with the sleeve I'm going to make sure I document EVERYTHING so that if it fails and I need a revision, I have plenty of evidence that I followed the rules. I could come to NYC. Do you have a recommendation? I don't mind travel if it means the best care. Thanks so much!! :-)

    Long term slow loser results?

Wow! I had the same experience! Went on a girl's trip and now I'm paying for it! How far out are you? I'm 10 months out.
  20. Ugh…2cm Hiatal Hernia was discovered during an upper endoscopy this week. I’m 16 months post op RNY and have never had a HH in my life. I’m trying to figure out how it happened and wondering if anyone else out here has gone through similar? Omeprazole every morning and being very careful is managing it so far. I’d prefer not to have another surgery as long as risk is minimal. Have my follow up with gastro guy in 10 days but/and wondering if anyone else has gone through this. Thanks.
  21. I am sitting in the business center at the Marriott Hotel in Tijuana. (now i am home) Thursday Day One: We used alighterme.com Left New Orleans around 8 am arrived in San Diego around 4 pm. Called Abraham To come pick us up from the airport. (person little story) We left home at 8 without eating or drinking and I forgot the snack pack at home so we went all day with just Water on the plane. By the time we landed in San Diego I was shaking and was about to pass out. So went went to a little place in the air port and some tortilla Soup and OMG it was soooooo good!!!!! But anyway Abraham came pick us up from the air and drove us to the hotel and OMG driving in Mexico is CRAZY CRAZY CRAZY!!!!!! We checked in with the help of Abraham because they did not speak much english you need a credit card to check in, if you use debit make sure your bank knows you are out of the country. I had to call to get them to let it charge. Once we were in our room Abraham ordered room service for us our free chicken broth ( the grosses stuff i have ever tasted in my life!! it was water and chicken fat!!! and a homemade orange popcicle. The popcicle was pretty good. Turned on the TV only about 4 channels that are in English. Hope you like CSI and Criminal Minds cause it plays almost all day! we watched alittle TV and went to bed. Abraham was coming to pick us up at 7:30 the next morning. Friday (D day) Day Two: Woke up took a nice long hot shower the Soups in the hotel and bath and body works! packed up the room went down stairs you HAVE to Check out or they will charge you 25 dollars. Waited for Abraham to come pick us up. When he came we went to the hospital when you walk in it (to me anyway) it was kinda like omg what did i get myself into because it like the back of the hospital and you go up stairs to a little waiting room fill out some paperwork ( Abraham helped once again because of our lack of spanish and their lack of english) We were not even finished filling out the paperwork and they came get us to bring us to our hospital room. They started with my husband first all we could unstand is EKG and they handed us a hospital gown. so we took our clothes off and got in the gown there is a safe in the hospital room! we looked up or phones and etc... 5 nurses came in two for my husband and two for me and one peron that draws the blood they did the EKG wrapped our legs and drew our blood within 10 minutes! They took my husband into surgery first he was gone for about an hour and half. They then came to get me they rolled me to see my husband then i walked into the operating room got on the table met Dr. Lopez and the other doctors. Then I woke up in my hospital room sick to the stomach. I threw up a few times and was very sick to the stomach for at least 24 hours. The nurses came in the room every hour to check on me and give me meds to help with the nausea. (side note) the person that drew my blood and put the IV in was GREAT!! usually in the states it take three or more times for them to find a vain she found they both in seconds! they gave me pain meds and nausea medsin my IV every 4 hours so i slept most of the time. My husband was not feeling that bad so he was up going stir crazy. They did the blue dye leak test on us also. Later that night the doctor on call came in checked our cuts, the drain and took our blood pressure and listened to our heart and lungs. Both my and my husband's blood pressure was high so they gave us some meds to put under our tounge. Then the nurse or doctor came in like every two hours to check our blood pressure once it went down they didnt come that often so we were able tp sleep. SATURDAY DAY THREE: the weekend nurses do not speak much english at all Woke up feeling pretty good. The nurse came in with some ice chips THANK GOD my mouth was soooooo dry. I got up and walked around for about 10 minutes but then they started cooking (the kitchen was on the same floor as our room) and the smell was HORRIBLE so i had to go back in the room. he nurse then came to check our IV's. My husband's vain collasped so they had to move his IV into his arm. They gave us more meds so we went to sleep for a while. Woke and went walk again then just watched TV (the hospital has more english speaking stations) Edwardo from alighterme Abraham and Dr. Lopez, came check on us asked if we needed anything. The day just went on with us walking and watching TV. They came to get us for an xray for the leak test made us drink this NASTY stuff and ttok pictures. After one walk my husband went to get back in bed and his IV came out and blood was gushing all over the place. I yelled for the nurse and they came in right a way. hooked the IV back up then left for a bit. I went back out to ask them to come clean up all the blood on the bed, on the floor, on the walls, etc.... it took about 20 minutes for someone to come clean it up. After that excitment we went take a nap work up and got some apple juice It was the BEST apple juice i ever had!! We just lounged around, napping, walking and watching TV. THEN IT STARTED it was about 6pm and I heard kids yelling so i looked out the window and saw a spacewalk i was oh cool they are having a kids party. WELLLLLL the DJ showed up about 8 and started playing spanish elvis, grease, acky breaky heart, and what ever other loud half english half spanish music he could find (for those that know swamp pop it was like spanish swamp pop) UNTIL 3AM in the morning. We could NOT sleep so i went ask the nurse for something to sleep she gave us something to drink. Knocked us out until the nurse came to give me antibodics in my IV and noticed my hand was huge and red. Se told me IV broken and to replace. She left for about 10 minutes and her and another nurse came in with her phone and translated that she called the doctor and I can take oral medication. I was SOOOOO happy about that. They took my IV out and unhooked my husbands (he still had the needle in) I slept the rest of the night. Sunday Day Four: I woke up the only one male nurse on the floor. I went ask him If i could take a shower. He said yes so I went take a shower it felt GREAT! got dressed and walked around the hospital floor. I asked the nurse for some apple juice for my husband and I. My husband went take a shower and then Abraham came pick us up from the hospital and brought us to the hotel. We checked in the hotel and ordered some tortilla soup broth fom room service because that chicken broth was soooooooooooooooooo gros!!! you get three cups and broth, 2 popcicles and 2 bottles of water a day. The tortilla soup broth was VERY VERY good. we ate that went walk around the hotel sat by the pool for a while then came back to the room and watched TV. I had to lay down because where my drain was placed i could not sit up comfortable. My husbands was a little higher so he did not have a problem. We watched TV and walked around the hotel for the rest of the day. Abraham called us to tell us he was coming to pick us up tomorrow (Monday) to go shopping and I asked when were theycoming to take teh drain out. He said he would find out. He called us back in like 20 minutes and said that Edwardo said he or the doctor will do it Monday after 6. We just hung out in the hotel for the rest of the day. OH the TOWELS and SHEETS are like sandpaper!!!!! i have brush burns on my legs from the sheets!!! and the Towels when i was drying off pulled shin off! Went to sleep and slept very well all night. Before you leave the hospital they give you a goodie bag. In the bag is your medication, a copy of the all the blood work (its in spanish), ear plugs, chap stick, gatoraide and a dvd of the surgery. MONDAY Day Five: Woke up took shower pulled skin off my body haha. ( i bought my own dial soap and bandaides so twice a day I washed our cuts and put bandaides on them. I also brought gas x strips started taking them every 4 hours after day 2! ) got dressed went down stairs in the hotel looked around went by the pool then business center and just waited for Abraham to come get us. He got to the hotel around 1 we went shopping for about four hours. Everyoery very one was very friendly then we went to the pharmacy we bought some acid reducers they were pretty cheap and the BEST popcicle i EVER had in my life!!!! OMG it was soooooo good!!! we went back to the hotel we were wiped out so we took a nap. About 6:30 Edwardo came to remove the drains. It did not hurt at all just felt funny. Then we watched somemore TV and about 8 oclock the doctor came to check us out make sure we were doing okay and went over the post op diet with us etc.... then we went to sleep for the night because we were being picked up from the hotel at 830 to go to the airport. Okay so this is brief maybo not so brief description of our surgery with alighterme in Mexico. if have any question feel free to ask. In closing I would HIGHLY suggest using alighterme everyone was great very friendly and helpful!! Illok forward to the rest of my journey, Just to give an update to how i am feeling we got home lastnight around midnight and I woke up this morning and mopped my floors!

    Long term slow loser results?

I am motivated but frustrated. I have been stalled for 9-10 months now. I got to 14 lbs from my goal and I have been up and down around that number since. So maybe a fresh cleansing of just the liquid diet will jump start things. Apparently, I cannot even look at carbs because as soon as I put something in my mouth, boom.....I gain. I am so fearful of the diabetes coming back that I have to do this liquid diet again. Wish me luck.
  23. I was banded on 4/8/10, and I've had a horrible taste in my mouth ever since I stopped the liquid diet. I used to use a couple of 5 calorie mints a day and drank my Water, but the mints are upsetting my stomach now. I still drink lots of water, but it doesn't seem to help much. Does anyone else have this problem? If you do, what do you do for it? Thanks in advance for any advice anyone has!

    Now For The Wait.....

Let me give u my story I have bcbs my paperwork was submitted on 9/25 I was told by the docs office it takes between 2 to 4 weeks. On 10/1 I cld insurance co I had been approved on 9/27. I cld my doc office she had not received approval. I cld the provider, they said they had fax info to doc office, so they re faxed info. On 10/2 I cld doc office twice and told them what insurance co said on 10/2 around 7 pm doc office cld with surgery date of 9/29/12. Case and point I was accerative in the process. Sometimes the folks working for the doc office do not go the xtra mile nor do they put themselves in our shoes. The morale of this story is help them, make calls and make it happen

    Telling Kids? (Teacher)

I dont really teach much other than basics (numbers, alphabet, animals, basic spanish/ASL, attempt manners lol) things to the younger classes and my a/s class is more for homework/relaxing activities. I talked with my bosses and they said that the wl is from eating right and working out, which is a great idea. However, I KNOW theyre going to ask about being out 2 weeks. Bosses said vacation, but do I lie to them and make up stories or...? Like I said, my kids are NOSEYYYYYY! Plus, parents will probably put 2 and 2 together between the drinks, being out, and wl and the kids will find out. Is there a 'kid friendly' version without it sounding like hey Im fat, but I shlopped my stomach and now Im better, then they get all "omg Im fat" lol I know it sounds weird but the way my aunt and uncle treated peoples weight made their (now 10 y/o, but its been for a few years now) daughter think shes fat and she obsesses over what she eats and her version of working out.. Perk though on a random note, EXCITED that after all this, the kids will stop asking "Miss Ashlee, why is your tushy so big?" Children really do say the darndest things lol!
