Even though I'm not what I call "bariatric royalty", I have social media with most, because of how I choose to support the wls community. Of course all of us will vary in our communication styles, as well as how we perceive intent. There really is no need to be rude though, and that's why I understand the reason for this post. Also not knowing every aspect of someone's medical and mental health history, when people struggle, a lot of people jump to conclusions, that they shouldn't. I guess the best way to explain where I'm coming from is that I've seen people feeling like they failed their wls from eating Cookies. For one person that failure is eating one cookie, for another a bite of a cookie, for some it's the entire package. People can be straight to the point without being rude. There is nothing that any of us post ops, newbie to grads, can really prepare anyone for how they will respond to wls. 3 out of 5 us in my immediate family had wls, same surgeon, same DNA, all of us are grads and completely DIFFERENT experiences post wls. For my sister and my Dad, it worked better for them not participate in anything wls (even though my Dad is a revised peep 13 1/2 years ago and still SMO) I remember the first 2 years post rny, I did struggle with head hunger. My surgery did what it was supposed to do. Then I found a love of exercise at 2 1/2 years post rny and got thinner and fitter than I ever dreamed (went from a size 24 to a 9/10 the 1st 2 years post rny). However when I talked about struggling in 2002 to mid 2004, people who were grads were mean to me. Then I got thinner and fitter when they started to falter. So between being too busy and lack of support, I just lived my life, until my complications nearly killed me (I started actively participating on Facebook in early 2010) and saw that not all wls peeps are going to be hateful and that there was support to give and take. But knowing there will always be haters. I've had people bluntly and/or hatefully say they would never regain weight, like I did, from 2007 to 2009, who've apologized years later, when they ended up gaining more weight than I did, with less trying circumstances. I've had anonymous haters tell me that they will never be like me, tell me that they would rather die than lose their wls tool but they weigh over 200 lbs more than I do. I guess the best way I can explain why I support this thread, and I'm not in any wls community, constantly, is you never know what people are truly going through. And even if someone is 3 days post wls, is just leaving the hosptial and is talking about wanting to go through the drive thru at Taco Bell, there's NEVER any reason to be mean. That's a sign someone needs acute medical and mental health help and support, usually best given by a clinically trained professional. NOT a 2-3 year post wls patient who hasn't walked in their shoes. The best way I can explain what I'm trying to say and I know I'm wordy, it's not much different than when someone says "If I can do it, anyone can". No, they may not be able to do it, you/we don't know all of their circumstances and none of us are EVER an expert on someone else's experience. Whether it be WLS related or anything else. -

My kids start school exactly one week post op, will I be able to care for them?
cameron1209 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am having a lap-band to sleeve revision with hiatal hernia repair on Aug. 15th and my 4 kids start school exactly one week later. I am worried that I will not be able to get up and get them all dressed, lunches packed, and driven to school by that point. Any insight into what to expect at one week post-op? I generally heal pretty fast (out shopping the day after released from hospital after all 4 of my c-sections), but I am not as young as I was then (I am 38). -
Hello good luck on your revision, you are in my thoughts and prayers today. Mines is 4-August. Please keep us posted on your progress!!! Sent from my LG-LS980 using the BariatricPal App

Band > Sleeve now what?
Lisa Kasen/UnstapledLisa replied to Debaria's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I say the same thing, about a 3rd revision, but for different reasons than most wls peeps. I gained almost 100 lbs (was "only" a 100 lbs overweight with no cormorbidities when I had my rny in 12/2001) starting at 6 1/2 years post rny, due to medications that caused both a chemically induced obsession with food and effected me metabolically, even though I threw up almost everything I ate, due to a gi bleed history from rny, for years. And my gastric bypass was reversed in 9/2010. I remain though in the wls communities to be a supportive peer, even though my responses are not necessarily popular. I'm not anti-rny, though nor anti-wls . I am saying that is it possible that you're on medications that can cause either weight gain or stalls weight loss. Or do you have a health history such as PCOS, thyroid, etc that sometimes can be problematic, as far as easier weight gain and/or slower weight loss? There's not much I haven't seen or heard in the almost 15 years I've participated in wls communities. I've seen people not be able to eat much and regain all their weight back. I've seen people be able to eat everything, i.e. my 13 1/2 year post rny sister who's maintained 95% of her weight loss and doesn't follow a bariatric regimen at all, but she does work out A LOT and is tiny, is super healthy and has never had one complication, doesn't dump, etc, as well as some other people I know. I don't talk about how I lose weight, but it wouldn't work for me, to follow a newbie bariatric regimen, even with thyroid and metabolic issues. As starvation no longer works. I'm OK with being 65-70 lbs lbs and almost 10 sizes smaller than my biggest both before bariatric surgery and after bariatric surgery (I was a size 24/3-4x both in 2001 and in 2009). I'm on average now of 12/14 and misses XL in most clothes. Sometimes smaller, sometimes bigger, depending on who makes the clothes. If you feel overall good, it might be easier on you both physically and mentally to concentrate on weight lost, not weight found. I choose to concentrate on being a 12/14 vs a 24 than the 2/4 I was, at my smallest. But if you do want to lose more weight, maybe it might help to rule out obstacles such as medical and medication issues that can cause weight gain or hamper weight loss. Hope this helps... Best of luck to you... -
I lost 10 lbs my first week. My second week is almost over and I've lost nothing. What the heck? I'm a band to sleeve revision and unfortunately comparing to the band where I lost 9 my first week and 4 my second. I'm so confused as I'm only having my protein shake and purees

Are requirements the same for revision?

I also had my band in 08. Revision to sleeve July 12. I had to go thru the same requirements for insurance approval for the revision as I would have if it were an initial surgery. 6 months dr/nutritionist appts & psych eval. I also have bcbs (Michigan) Sent from my SM-G900V using the BariatricPal App -
Hi Everyone! I had a healthy babygirl in October. I have been breastfeeding and I have gained so much weight POST PARTUM. During my pregnancy I only gained 11 pounds (baby was nearly 6) so really only 5 pounds I was back to prepregnancy weight 5 days after being discharged from the hospiatal. I have since gained 15 pounds. My question is has anyone had a sleeve revision post partum? I am looking for real expectiations before I make an appointment with a surgeon. I am near the end of my breastfeeding journey (not by choice).

5 days post-op, in extreme pain and depression

I also have BPD, and can honestly say that if you are feeling suicidal, please go to the ER and tell them your situation. They can monitor you and get you in with someone to talk to ASAP. I know exactly how you feel even though I haven't had surgery yet and I know how scary it can be. How alone you can feel. Please know that you are never alone and all of us care deeply for you and your well-being. You are facing a whole different set of challenges as someone with BPD than those without this face. Please go to the ER and have them put you in a room. Generally all I have to tell them is "My therapist told me to come here in case of an emergency, this is an emergency. I feel like I want to kill myself" it may seem extreme , but it will get results. If you are in pain tell them that, they can get the Dr to give you something for the pain and probably some light sedation to help you sleep. Please don't let it escalate any more than it has. That you had the presence of mind to come here and tell us shows great strength and resilience. Also, are you medicated for BPD? Have you missed any of them or run out? I know that can send me into a very rapid downward spiral. I can only imagine how you must be feeling being in so much pain after a revision. I don't think it's normal to be in extreme pain. I would absolutely go get it checked. Please go to the ER and have them admit you for a long as you need. We love you and want you here to share your journey! Ready for a chance at really living! ❤️ -

I had band to RNY revision 4/1/16. I just had to have 3 month preop appointments with the nutritionist. My insurance required that. Then I had to see pulmonologist, and that was my surgeon requesting that. My insurance denied me at first. I filed an appeal and typed up a 3 pg letter explaining why I needed this done. Best decision ever! Sent from my SM-G935V using the BariatricPal App -

Gastric Band or Plication?
offthebandwagon replied to Mrsrcm's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I just had my band removed last Friday 7/29/16. I had my band placed 3/2007, so I lived with it for almost 10 years. When my surgeon opened my up he discovered that my band had put a HOLE in my diaphragm. He said he had never seen that before. At 2 years out, is when I first started having complications with my band. I followed all the rules to a "T", and did experience some initial success with it. But once the complications started it was never ending. I have also put back on every one of the 70 pounds I originally lost. The Dr that placed my band doesnt even do them anymore. EVERYONE I know personally that was banded, had to have surgery again. What ever you decide to do, just keep in mind that the longer a procedure has been around, the more informed a decision you can make. When I had my band placed in 2007, it was considered to be "much safer" than the bypass, but was still the new guy on the block. Go figure.... I am having a revision to bypass in November of this year. -

Un-filling the band before revision surgery?

I had my band to bypass revision about a week and a half ago. My insurance required all the stuff a non-revision would have to do (six month diet, psych evaluation, etc) but had the extra requirement that I had to prove I was "compliant" with the lapband rules while I had the band, and I also had to have a malfunction of the band currently causing it to need to be removed (Luckily I did, it had slipped and turned). But I have terrible insurance so maybe yours won't be as complicated as mine. -

I've had a lapband since 08 and having pain at port site, occasional dry heaves, belching. I'm seeing a surgeon Aug. 5 about a revision to GBP and am wondering about the requirements for revision to be approved by Anthem BCBS. I know all insurances are different, but I don't have to get another psch eval, nutrition class, etc., do I? Sent from my SM-N920P using the BariatricPal App -
August Bypass Buddies!

August 29th here. LB to RNY revision. Got 2 weeks away a year ago and changed my mind. A year later and I'm kicking myself - I could be thin by now!! So if you're nervous and wondering if you're doing the right thing...don't do what I did! Go for it! @@MrsMonroe - I'm from Waco but having my surgery in Dallas with Dr. Hodges. She is who I was scheduled with last year (not HER fault I got nervous). She was with Barker Bariatric but she and another doc there went off on their own. I'm self-pay and her price actually went DOWN $3,000! Sweet. All you early-August gals...Best of luck!! -

@@gina171, sorry about that. This link indicates "ebook," but is good for the paperback as well. (Edited: Another link that won't work Title: "The Weight Loss Surgery Coping Companion: A Practical Guide to Coping with Post-Surgery Emotions" Author: Tanie Miller Kabala, Ph.D.) http://www.amazon.com/Weight-Loss-Surgery-Coping-Companion-ebook I have the revised and the original editions, but haven't taken time to compare them. If it means anything, this is the review of the original edition that I wrote in Amazon: "With so much written about weight-loss surgery itself, it's good to have Dr. Kabala's book as a guide through the emotional aspects of weight loss. It addresses clearly the familiar doubts, fears and obstacles. There is space for responses to the written exercises, but it would be smart to write everything in a separate journal. A journal becomes the record of our evolving emotional (and physical) landscapes and our growth through the weight loss journey. The most eye-opening chapter for me is "How to Cope with Identity Confusion." Dr. Kabala was wise to include clothing choices, as clothing is a big part of how we express our personalities. The large questions that arise with significant weight loss -- Who am I? What do I like? What do I want? How will I express myself in ways that feel comfortable? -- are given clarity and a format for finding answers. Because the book is about dealing with the common roadblocks, people who are considering surgery can benefit from it, too. I think the same holds for people who are losing weight without surgery." -

What meds for spasms? I didn't have any meds for spasms. I also have a pain in my midsection. I don't think it's my stomach because it doesn't hurt when I cough or sneeze. Doesn't hurt when I'm sitting. Really only hurts when I'm walking. Like something jiggling and hurting. It does seem a little better today. I had my surgery, a band sleeve revision, on the 22nd. I thought maybe gas?
