  1. Hi everyone! My name is Kris and I live near Cleveland, Ohio. I'm 36 years old, single with no kids. I'm still in the research phase and haven't made any decisions yet. I have a seminar to attend next week and the week after I'm meeting with my general physician to talk about all my options before I go to my first consultation. Growing up I was always the skinny kid in the neighborhood. I was a size 6 until my early 20's. Since then I've steadily gained weight. I've tried every diet out there. Some worked, some didn't. I lost weight only to gain it back plus more. I've done Weight Watchers which is really the only thing that actually worked but once I stopped paying the fee I gained all the weight back. After reading some of the threads here I have a couple of concerns and/or questions... I've been in and out of therapy since my late 20's for personal matters not directly related to my weight. About a year ago I had an appointment with my Psychiatrist for a prescription refill appointment and I broke down and told him that I had been using laxatives on and off for the past 6+ years to lose weight. (As much as they say laxatives don't work for weight loss, they lie because it has always worked for me). Since the admission to him I've also had to come "clean" with my regular doctor and my therapist. Early 2007 I had lost about 30 pounds and was up to 15 laxatives a day. I stopped taking them in July and gained all the weight back plus 10. I know laxatives are bad so I'm not looking for any lectures but its a problem that I'm trying really hard to work past. It's almost like an addiction. Every time I eat a bite of food I think about taking a pill. *sigh* anyway.... My question is... will this end up hurting my chances to be approved for the surgery? Another concern I have is the cost. I called my insurance company and they said the surgery is not covered. Has anyone fought their insurance company and won? If not, how were you able to afford the surgery??? I'm really glad I found this site. I just mentioned to my sister tonight that I was thinking about getting the lap band hoping I'd have her support but all I heard was "how stupid" the idea was! ~kris

    Checking the Boxes

I'm filling out some forms for my Psyche evaluation that is scheduled for 05/30. I can't help but wonder if I'm writing 3/4 of the report the guy is going to send the insurance company! I had a brief conversation with this guy when I scheduled my appointment. It sounds like he is a non-value-added checkbox along my path of this journey. He has no specific training in obesity issues, doesn't even appear to be a full-time psychologist (only available nights and week-ends). I asked him what his qualifications were for performing the evaluation; his response was that his wife had been through the surgery. Doesn't seem like much of a qualification. My husband will be happy to know that he'll expand his career options once I have the surgery! Oh well...I'm already working with a psychologist on my own. The dr. didn't want her opinion; afraid that she won't fill out the report properly was the reason. She and I have tackled many of the issues surrounding my weight. One checkbox will be complete on 05/30 (Psyche Eval) Second checkbox will be complete on 06/09 (6th month of nutrition counseling). Final checkbox will be the letter of medical necessity - supposedly to be sent by the surgeon. There really is no question on that issue; my BMI is over 55 and I have two co-morbidities (high blood pressure & obesity induced asthma). The timeline I've been told is that to anticipate a surgery date between July 20 & 31. I think I'll be holding my breath until I come out of recovery. :glare:

    1st Post op Visit

Today was my first visit with my surgeon post op. Good news is that I am down 14 pounds since surgery two weeks ago. Woo Hoo! Bad news, or not so good news is I dont feel very much restriction right now so the pureed food doesnt do much to satisfy me. The surgeon said my first fill will be Nov 8th! I cant wait. Then at least I will feel full when eating these small amounts. Other than that I am good. The itching is starting to subside more and more wiht my healing. I am noticing my clothes getting much looser. I tried a little tuna salad for lunch today. Just ate it from a little cup. It was good. :-) Anyone else have some good ideas for this pureed stage? Ive tried soups, refried beans, cottage cheese, yogurt, oatmeal, and now tuna salad. Have a great week everyone!

    my consultation with dr geiss

ok so yesterday was my consultation with Dr, Geiss he is so sweet and nice i really liked him , i picked him cause he has done over 3000 surgery's for the lapband when i got there i first met with the nurse practiciner who went over what i could consume and cannot consume and how the lapband works , then she went over and got me weighed and i had a heavy sweater jacket on with sneakers so it read 253 pounds ! yikes ! so then dr geiss greeted me and i went into his office with my husband he asked me how long i been dieting and why do i want to have the lapband surgery , i told him how i am depressed and tired of being fat . He told me how great my insurance is and said he never has a problem with it , he also said they usually approve everyone he thinks is a good candidate and he said i am a great candidate and i will do great. also a huge plus is my insurance doesnt require a 6month diet with your doctor prior to surgery so i was happy about that , he says they are also so fast to approve they will approve within a week so i could get this surgery by the end of next month whooohoo. so then i asked dr geiss about the realize band and he told me he doesnt like that band that the lapband is more reliable and better so i took his word he then gave me all the tests i need to complete which is the following blood work to see a psycologist a nutritionist which will be out of pocket 250 dollars but my insurance covers everything eles =) cardiologist / ekg, echo, stress test pulmonary consult for pulmonary function test if he thinks i need sleep apnea test then i will go for it upper GI test my weight history documented and then 2 weeks prior to surgery i need to take a education class then i get a surgery date if im approved which he has no doubt so before i went i said to myself id this something i really want ? will this help me ? i asked my self a series of questions and came to the conclusion that i do need this surgery so i can be healthy and be me again! if i dont i will just continue to do my bad habits and gain weight and be depressed forever i want nothing more then to be healthy happy and skinny

My sweet spot has been reached.

Well, so far so good. I had my last fill 4 days ago and was back on regular foods for the last two days. I think my band is perfect now. I tend to eat yogurt for breakfast and it goes down with just a little bit of slow down. Lunch is a tiny bit tight, and supper is perfect. I'm now down to about a cup of food at supper time....which is when I really need the help to stay on track. It looks like I will be able to maintain 1000-1200 calories pretty easily now. I was averageing a couple of hundred more then that before the fill. It doesn't sound like much difference, but thats almost half a pound a week difference. I have cut back to about 10 hours of excercise a week. I'm really busy at work right now, and the reduced calorie intake should make it all equal out.

    Don't know my size...

amen! I'm down over 60 in total and I agree hit up a consignment shop and just try things on first. Get. Few things to hold you over while your still loosing. I refuse to spend to a of money on things I'll hopefully shrink out of soon. Take it slow and easy. I did spurge this weekend and bought one pair of pants from Old navy for a few reasons 1 they were on sale. 2 they are size 20 and I was in a 26-28. And 3 they are SKINNY jeans! I don't think I've ever fit into anything "skinny" in my life! Lol

on my way to a baby shower

From the album: 2 Months Post Op!!!! 44lbs down!!!

    25 lbs down 3/16/13
  8. I definitely have more restriction again, after my fill on the 26th. But I still can eat about 2 cups of food before getting the full signals. For me the full signal is one little hiccup. I stop eating at this point, and sure enough I'm full. For me if I eat too much it will become uncomfortable with a kind of tiny bit of pain. I still can eat way too fast. I eat the Sam's club stuffed chicken breast and 10 sweet potato fries in about 20 minutes. If I was at ideal restriction, I think that I not only wouldn't be able to eat that much, but it would take me the full half hour to eat. My last fill was another 1.0cc, and I'm hoping to keep this restriction through the entire month. We will see how it goes. The new "fat burn" type of exercise is working much better for me then the "cardio training" programs. It doesn't bother my knee so much and it burns more total calories. The disadvantage is it takes 3 times as much time to burn the same calories, but since I have the time....thats what I'm going to do.

    Working out post op

I've not done any real exercise beyond walking since surgery. But I was cleared for light weight training at 6 weeks post-op. After 6 months, I was told I could do whatever kind of weight training I wanted.
  10. My doc told me 2-4 weeks. I elected to take a month off, I am a store manager of a busy store and j knew I would be over lifting working too hard too fast. I was approved for FMLA and going back to work Thursday :-(
  11. My surgeon requires a minimum of 6 weeks (preferably 8) off if your job requires physical labor. That's pretty much a general rule of thumb for any major surgery. I have a desk job, so was able to return to work after 2 1/2 weeks, even though the doctor recommends 4 weeks. It would have been sooner, but my surgery was 2 weeks before Memorial Day and I had already scheduled vacation for an extended holiday weekend!

    Insurance question... pre-op weight

I too have AETNA and 1 week from surgery. My BMI is 35-36 and I have 4 cormorbidites. However one weigh in I was under the 35 like 34.7) and the clinic said if I fall under the insurance guidelines I wont be eligible. I totally panicked. My next weigh in was maybe 3-4 pounds higher. I was so used to Weight Watcher weigh ins that I figured I was supposed to try to lose. But for me that was an issue. But beware that you cant gain from your initial weigh in either. It was a bit hard trying not to fluctuate a few pounds either way. I really needed to talk to the clinic better at the beginning because they work with all the insurance companies and know well what needs to happen to get authorization approved. Best of Luck.
  13. I've had a similar experience this past 2 weeks. Sometimes I can eat a little and do fine, then after 30 minutes or so, burping. Then other times I can not even drink anything? I was afraid I might have a slip....

    Pre-Op Diet

My pre-op diet was simple. I couldn't take in more than 1000 calories for two weeks. My cousin was on a two week liquid diet. It depends on your surgeon.

Anyone lose a bunch before surgery?

GG I am in a stall right now...the dreaded "3rd week stall". Yargh. So I am having the same panicky thoughts. Sigh. Oh, well. I know that logically I am eating too few calories NOT to lose weight. But it really is disheartening to see that # freeze in place. I need to back away from the scale and not go near it for a few days or a week. Hope you are fabulous!
  16. I lost 55 pounds in 5 months before surgery and right now I am 5 weeks out and have lost 30 pounds. I actually thought this same exact questions the night before surgery. I thought...'well I have been eating very little before the sleeve already, so would it make a big difference after surgey? Will I still loose the weight like everyone else?'..... and the answer is yes! so don't worry about it. By the way congrats on loosing that weight! It only makes it closer to goal!! You loose so fast in the beginning that it makes you only jump closer to goal by loosing that weight before surgery! Good luck on your journey and keep us posted!

    24 hours after surgery

It does get better. I didn't eat anything for the 1st 5 days. I was in a lot of pain and my stomach rebelled with even the smallest bites. I wasn't able to eat a whole can of Soup in a day until the 3rd week. I could tell when I was getting full when I'd start to burp, and I'd have to eat very very slow. I'm talking 1/2 tsp every 5 minutes. I could take one bite to many and be in misery. I was still learning how much I could hold. So try to hang in there. It does get better, but it takes time.
  18. Hi guys. I'm 8 days post op and my stomach is going MAD with rumbling sounds, I can feel it from my pouch rumbling all the way down the intestines if u know what I mean. Plus I have been having diarrhea the past 3 days, is this normal? Am I doing something wrong? Thanks

Is A 5 Pound Gain Possible?

I think some of the weight is from the crackers/sweets/fried food and brownies; and the some is from the high salt content that is fast/fried food. If you MUST have a snack at night I would make it chicken breast, or veggies. Because crunchy carbs are my down fall I don't keep them in my house at all. Full disclosure I had chips and salsa, and cheesecake at a Super Bowl party and it took me a week to loose those 4 pounds that were there Monday morning. Stupid Patriots!!!

    Very Rumbly Tummy

I have a rumbly tummy and I will be 4 weeks post op on Monday. Every time anything hits my pouch it rumbles! LOL:-) but it's all good because the weight is coming off...I'm very very happy! surgery date: 7/30/12
  21. When I weighed myself at home on 2/6/12, I weighed 256. I was so happy because I had lost 2 pounds (I was 258 the previous Monday). I stuck close to my diet all week, but did cheat a few times with some crackers and sweets in the evenings. I still exercised each day though. Then, over the weekend, we had friends over and they brought Long John Silvers for dinner. I knew it was bad, but I didn't want to insult them, so I had 2 pieces of fish, 2 hushpuppies, and cole slaw. While we were playing cards, I also ended up snacking on brownies and Cookies that my husband had made. I knew it was bad and a no-no, but it had been sooooo long since I had those things. Well, Monday morning, I had an adjustment appointment and I weighed in at 261. I was so angry and mad at myself. I couldn't figure out how I gained 5 pounds in 1 week, but I bust my butt to only lose 2 pounds the previous week.... Is this possible, or was it possibly Water retention. My PA gave me a big lecture about carbs and how they affect blood sugar, insulin production, and fat storage. I felt like a little kid who had failed their science test. I weighed today and I'm back down to 258, which I'm happy about, but I'm still at a loss of the 5 pounds in 1 week. My scales are also very accurate. They are usually within 1 pound with my doctor's scales. I know there will be bumps in this road, but I didn't realize one cheat day would produce those horrible results. Needless to say, I'm back on the wagon this week and hopefully next Monday, I can see that 256 or less again....

Surgery is scheduled for 12/8 - Yea!

Hello ladies! I just received my date for December 1st-I'm also very excited about finally reaching this point (I had a 6 month supervised weight requirement for insurance). My pre-op appointments are on 11/20 and 11/26 so I guess I'll also be on liquids the week of thanksgiving also. I believe my plan allows one lean meal per day so I'll get some nice turkey and veggies still ???? looking forward to seeing your progress!

    Stomach feels full?

After surgery, the primary drivers are meeting your Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary. Your body is converting the stored fat in your body into energy. Thus you lose weight. I had RNY surgery and was restricted to 2 ounces (1/4 cup) of food per meal at the six week mark. So I thought it strange that you were consuming a cup per meal. But there are a variety of surgeries such as Sleeve and the meal limit requirements will differ. There are many different types of Protein shakes out there. To me they all taste bad. I experimented until I found one that I could tolerate. In my case it was Muscle Milk Light. I used a blender (Ninja single serving size) to blend the powder to the proper consistency. I blended in a banana to mask the taste.
