Surgery at Henry Ford by Dr. Bilal Kharbutli, MD
kikilebl posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Dr. Kharbutli, MD is an awesome doctor with an exceptional staff. He thoroughly explained everything to me prior to surgery, stopping and asking if I had any questions. My time in the hospital would be over night. When I came out of the room I was greeted by Richard, who went over my calendar with me as we set up all of the appointments needed prior to the surgery. The dietician, exercise class, psych evaluation, followup appts, etc. I was then given a booklet that details everything you need to know before and after surgery. This is about the surgery itself and what to expect afterwards. I was also given samples of things to try before surgery. His office is run like a well oiled machine and is very well orchestrated. Everyone is helpful. I had a question about something prior to surgery. I called Richard and asked. Within 3-5 minutes the doctor called me back. The staff at Henry Ford Wyandotte Bariatric part of the hospital were the kindest, most attentive, and sweet people which made my recovery a breeze.-

Bariatric abdomen binder from amazon $34.99 on amazon which is the lowest for this item on any site I found. I ordered it but I have not had surgery yet. It comes in sizes based on the inches around your stomach.

Two week pre op liquid diet?
magpie26 replied to Red Alicia's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Mine was 2 weeks. It's hard the first few days, but then it gets WAY easier, I promise! I thought it as "Bariatric Boot Camp" . Some surgeons (nutritionist, really) can give you super specific instructions, some basically a list and how many calories, protein, carbs, etc (that was mine). It's super important to shrink your liver and also you'll get used to post op "eating". But everyone is completely different but I've seen 2 weeks kind of as the average. -
Eating after gastric bypass
MarinaGirl replied to Yo-yo girl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Are you on a Proton Pump Inhibitor (e.g. Prilosec, Nexium, Protonix, Prevacid)? Excess acid sometimes presents as hunger. After bariatric surgery, our smaller stomachs still produce acid as if our stomachs were bigger; therefore, the majority of surgeons recommend PPIs for 3-6 months post-op. Your nerves were cut during surgery, which means you may not feel much restriction initially. This will change later but until then it is imperative you do not try to eat to fullness; instead, measure your food (protein first) and only eat small portion sizes. -
Past few weeks my wedding ring has gone from "loose"...to "way too freakin loose"....to "Ok, that time It missed being lost forever by inches" Had a jeweler fit it with a resizing wire, but think I'm gonna have to get a bit cut out of it eventually. What a weird unexpected problem. Who knew? If your wedding ring starts to get loose? Pay attention and get it fixed...my jeweler said more people lose wedding rings after bariatric surgery than you can imagine.

Question on revision vsg to bypass
James Marusek replied to animallover1247's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Prior to surgery, I suffered severe acid reflux (Gerd). As a result I had gastric bypass because sleeve will only make the condition worse. After my surgery, my surgeon put me on Omeprazole (over the counter Prilosec), which was the same thing that I used for acid reflux. He said the reason why he prescribed this was to allow my stomach to heal properly. I took it daily for a year and then stopped. I am 5 years post-op and haven't taken it past the first year and haven't experience Gerd since. So you might see if your surgeon will prescribe Omeprazole (a proton-pump inhibitor) for you. According to the internet: Nausea and vomiting are the most common complaints after bariatric surgery, and they are typically associated with inappropriate diet and noncompliance with a gastroplasty diet (ie, eat undisturbed, chew meticulously, never drink with meals, and wait 2 hours before drinking after solid food is consumed). If these symptoms are associated with epigastric pain, significant dehydration, or not explained by dietary indiscretions, an alternative diagnosis must be explored. One of the most common complications causing nausea and vomiting in gastric bypass patients is anastomotic ulcers, with and without stomal stenosis. Ulceration or stenosis at the gastrojejunostomy of the gastric bypass has a reported incidence of 3% to 20%. Although no unifying explanation for the etiology of anastomotic ulcers exists, most experts agree that the pathogenesis is likely multifactorial. These ulcers are thought to be due to a combination of preserved acid secretion in the pouch, tension from the Roux limb, ischemia from the operation, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use, and perhaps Helicobacter pylori infection. Evidence suggests that little acid is secreted in the gastric bypass pouch; however, staple line dehiscence may lead to excessive acid bathing of the anastomosis. Treatment for both marginal ulcers and stomal ulcers should include avoidance of NSAIDs, antisecretory therapy with proton-pump inhibitors, and/or sucralfate. In addition, H pylori infection should be identified and treated, if present. -
WHO IN PUBLIC LIFE OR HOLLYWOOD DO YOU THINK WOULD BENEFIT MOST FROM BARIATRIC SURGERY?
Frustr8 replied to Frustr8's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Yipes the Bariatric Not so Secret Police are after me. Well you are 85% correct and 15% in error, at least in my case, and let me explain why. Yes, Rainbow Warrior you are correct with the speculation and comments point. Anyone who has read my more-in-depth postings Knows I suffered much brising , wounding and scarring in my own life. This is try but I also survived. the 47 thousand assorted diets, everything from the Eat Grapefruit and it will, eat up your fat cells to the Push yourself away, from the table and go sit in the corner, starving diet. Up until 3 years ago. when I started. seeking Bariatric surgery,i felt I was fated to die obese, in abundant persive pain from every joint in my body, and largely(there's that word again) unloved. True I might not accepted an intervention from the. average Jack,or Jill on the street, but if a Bariatric Victor had to come to me and said" I have something to tell you about my own life" I would have listened, no I would have grabbed onto their words as a lifeline to hope, for at that point if the Dark Death Angel had come for me at that point I would have gone with him. I was that emotionally down in truth the only thing that kept me from suicide, was the feeling,i wouldn't succeed at that either. So if you feel my starting of this thread, was misguided, I repent of it. Stop responding to it and it will die in obscurity like many other Bariatric postings. What I will not recant is standing up for myself, for the vast majority of my 72 years I did not. I tried to be a Low Drama Mama and it gained me the honor of being a wet soggy doormat for my family and much of the world. In many respects it may be a little too late to do the right thing now but I am standing up today and at the time of my surgery. I resolve to be thinner, healthier, happier and no one will shunt me to a dark dank corner again. -
VSG redo and SIPS? Anyone had this?
MarinaGirl replied to Skittlesandrainbows's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I recommend you find a surgeon that does the real DS (Hess method) instead of SIPS. DS has the best long term results of any bariatric surgery. As well, there is no medical billing code for SIPS, so most surgeons that do SIPS fraudulently code their surgery as DS; therefore, you could run the risk of having to pay the entire bill if insurance finds out. Most insurance companies consider SIPS (aka SADI ) experimental so rarely cover it. -

Surgery with Dr. Alvarez Endobariatrics

Wonder if anyone else,on Bariatric Pal has utilized his services? -
One of Tomkitten, my son's favorite all-time videos is "It's Raining Men" by Martha Wash and the Cancelled. He was playing,it off of You Tube, turned to me and said Those, ladies really could benefit from Bariatric Intervention. Yes, he inherited my,❤of BIG words. And truly, at the time they made that video, they could. Several of them looked at risk for cardiac complications. So as first nominees I vote for them. Number 2 would be Kim Jung Un , he is an un- happy fat little dude. and perhaps surgery, would make him a smaller happier person. WHO do YOU feel would benefit MOST?

Purée days - how do you get enough protein?
sillykitty replied to ValerieLynn's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I really like some of the protein fortified soups available on here, Bariatric Pal. I still use them to supplement my protein, 4 months out. -
I know what you mean. Thankfully I have two people that support me completely so I feel like that's the main thing keeping me sane, but my roommates, family, etc are not supportive. Half of them will just be quiet about it and show their support by not talking about how much they think it's a bad idea. One I had to sit down and have a serious talk with about how their comments were hurting instead of supporting. My friend/landlord is taking their stress out on me because they're so worked up on worrying I'm ruining my life. They can't seem to comprehend that it's possible to not live to eat. We were even suppose to go grocery shopping together, but he cancelled saying I would just buy stuff for preop diet and he doesn't want to contribute or associate with it at all. No support makes everything so much harder. I suggest connecting with people who know what you're going through. I know my bariatric team has a support group every month and I've made some good friends that understand what I'm going through without feeling like I have to justify. Also one thing that has helped is becoming knowledgeable in everything I can involving the surgery. I wanted to be prepared as much as I can. Whenever my loved ones voiced their concerns I would respond back with a very informed answer. This has gained the respect of a few of my close friends so that, while they still rather I do not, they now back off and respect my choice. I really hope things get a bit easier for you. You can always talk to all of us on here. I think I would be so much more scared of this process if I didn't have this website and gastric sleeve support groups on facebook.

Single Incision Gastric Sleeve- August 13th Surgery Date!
Elle_Woods replied to Elle_Woods's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@jodi1980 thank you! :) it is, and it is literally done through one incision in the belly button....so no visible scar! I am going through the New York Bariatric group and Dr. Garber is doing my surgery. He is one of the most experienced in the single incision sleeve surgery. -
It has been a long time since Ihave been on this site. I signed up back in 2008 when I had the Lapband and like many of you I failed it. I am back to my pre-op weight and hating myself every day for it. I have decided to get the Gastic Sleeve and since my insurance wont cover it, I am planning on getting the surgery down in Mexico with Dr. Alvarez of Endobariatrics. I am currently scheduled for the surgery 8/29, although I have yet to send the down payment. I have spent the past 4 days researching Dr. Alvarez and I have found literally nothing negative about him. Either he is the best bariatric surgeon EVER or he has one hell of a social media department. My PCP has expressed serious reservations about going down to Mexico for the surgery as has my wife (who is Mexican). My biggest concern is any complications as a result of the surgery. My insurance will not cover any medical expenses that come as a result of the surgery and I am in no place to foot a hospital bill sans-insurance. I also have a concern about whether or not I will fail this surgery as I did the lapband. Anyways, I just wanted to vent and look for some moral support. Thanks for reading.

Has any one had gastric sleeve done at A slimmer me in Mexico?

I'm 12 days out from my surgery, still in full liquid phase, and understand what you are going through. I've definitely had moments of despair and regret, but we'll get through it. I had my surgery done through Kaiser, had to take a three month class, then follow it up with 2 months dealing with the doctor. One of the things I've found most helpful, even with all the information I was given, was going to a bariatric support group. Kaiser has one free to the public, and hopefully someone has something similar in your area. It's been a great source of information, advice, and encouragement. You get to talk to a lot of people who have been in your situation, and can offer different advice on getting through certain things. Don't give up yet. 3 days out I really was wondering what on earth I had gotten myself into. I'm 2 days away from my next phase and know that will make it so much easier. Stick with it, you didn't go through all this for nothing.

Food is fuel, simple as that, and sometimes it can taste amazing! Navigation in the beginning is tough. A few bites of something you used to eat (that may not be so good for you, I personally don't go there yet) tastes JUST as good as the six cups you previously ate, or half the -insert food here- you used to eat. sometimes I will admit that once in awhile i get sad that I can't eat that whole bowl of fabulous pasta at my favorite restaurant, but seriously? I did this to change my life for the better, clean, healthy eating, nothing processed, feeding my family healthy meals, not mad and cheese and chicken nuggets anymore. to each their own, and it's HARD, damn hard when you start out! Everyday is a learning experience, everyday is a chance for a new you. Therapy is a good thing, I go not just about food, because unlike many bariatric patients i didn't have underlying food issues except carbs and depression. But talking about the surgery is important. Good luck. Please take care of not only yourself but your new stomach.

The various bariatric vitamins formulated for specific procedures are generally OK, and my be worth the cost if the convenience is that important to you. The problem with them is that over time, as your lab results come in you will probably find that you need "more of this and less of that" than what the product provides, and you wind up going with separate supplements. Also, with a bypass, you probably need more calcium and iron than those products provide, and they need to be spaced out during the day, so you still wind up taking supplements 3, 4, 5, or 6 times a day because those multis don't provide those added minerals that you need at different times, Try them if you like - many do but ultimately most give them up as they usually don't make things all that more convenient to be worth their cost.

Summer 2018 Surgery Buddies Check In Here!
Luzbella replied to Ylime's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgical coordinator called to confirm my surgery date. July 30th 6 am. I start my 2 wk liquid diet July 16th. I will have it at the Roger Williams Hospital. Bariatric founder and director doctor Dieter Polh is doing my surgery. I’m very excited! Thanks for adding me to the list. -
https://store.bariatricpal.com/collections/bariatricfusion/products/bariatric-fusion-multivitamin-mineral-supplement-5-flavors My nutritionist told me not to go with the children's vitamins. I already have to take a prescription vitamin D 50'000 mcgs 3x a week. This one that I have found that is supposed to be "complete" or "comprehensive" It even has a disclaimer that says no other supplements needed. For $25.00 a month you can't beat it. So if anyone out there has tried this please give some feedback.

Summer 2018 Surgery Buddies Check In Here!
Dixie Jo replied to Ylime's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m so excited, I had my second visit with the Cardiogist. There was a little bleep on the 1st and 2nd EKG’S, so I had to have a Sonagram a week and a half ago! My follow up was this morning! The dr said I have the heart of a 20 yr old. Pretty good for a 68 yr old, too bad my body feels like an 80 yr old!😂 Tomorrow morning I’m calling the Bariatric dr to see how soon I can have my surgery scheduled! Be nice the end of July but I doubt it. Seems like the merry go round turns slow sometimes! But I’m still getting excited! -
