    The Waiting Game....

The approval process in the US seems like a hardship. Here in PR is easier for the patients, if you have a BMI of 35 or higher with comorbidities or 40 or higher, all insurance companies must approve your surgery within 15 days of submitting your application provided you include evidence of having tried any weight loss treatment and or exercise plan without success, and the basic medical evidence. Then with the approval you begin the process of nutricionist, and all the evaluations needed prior surgery.

    TOO TIGHT!

Just shows you how everyone reacts differently with the band.....no 2 people are the same. My first fill was 4cc's, and did absolutely nothing. As a matter of fact I was as hungry as ever and gained weight afterwards.

    This scares me

There are no nerve ending on the stomach so you don't feel the band or the stitches at all. And I had to lose 100 lb before I could even feel my port buried in that fat!! LOL!! The surgery itself was a real non-event.....learning a new lifestyle is the challenge. And, as the others said, I was scared of dying from NOT having weight loss surgery. If I had not done it two years ago, I probably would not be here today....seriously! And now I am unstoppable!! It's nothing short of a miracle.:cursing:

    Gastric bypass

It's easy for other people to say we "don't need" this surgery when they have not lived in our bodies and lived our lives and have no idea what we've been through and deal with on a daily basis. As for loose skin, mostly it's not something you can control, unfortunately. It's true that staying super hydrated and lifting weights can help, but really when you're weight training you're just increasing muscle mass and hopefully tightening muscles as well. This does not include the skin in any way. Generally, that's all up to your genetics, age, how much you lose, etc. Congrats on your approval! You'll do great.
  8. One thing to keep in mind is that only 5 percent of people who lose weight thru diet and exercise alone are able to maintain the loss long term. That percentage is much higher for people who have had WLS.

    Goal weight/ dietician...

I started at 238.4, I'm not quite 4 months out, exercise practically never, and I'm already at 193.6 (feeling like a slow loser compared to most on here!). So that puts me at within a half pound of your starting weight and already less than 10 lbs to their goal weight in 4 months, and I am by no means super strict about diet or exercise! So I think they're being very conservative. 140 is my goal too and my surgeon expects me to hit it around 12-15 months.
  10. Everyone ends up with a different experience no matter which surgery you choose. I have a friend that is about four years post op, is struggling with anemia and has gained some ( maybe twenty to twenty five pounds) of the weight back. Has trouble with some Desserts with the dumping syndrome, but cheesecake( and some other desserts) are no problem. Some gastric bypass people gain their weight back and some Lap Band gain their weight back. For me, GBP was not an option. I could not get over the rerouting and bypassing of my stomach issue. As far as what you can eat after. That varies, too. Some banders choose a stronger level of restriction or band fill than others and with a strong fill level, it's possible to have difficulty with a larger variety of food. But having the flexibility with the band is something that bypass don't have. Their pouch is formed and that's it. No adjustment is possible. did your surgeon say why he thought GBP was better for you? Many surgeons prefer one procedure over another simply because they do more of them and a few might prefer it as ins. pays more. Or are they doing more Bypass because they keep recommending it? So far, I do not slime, I have had food stuck a couple times in the beginning stage of being banded. Why is it hard getting fills? It takes about a 10 min. appt for my fills and most of that time is talking to the PA about how I'm doing. Yes, losing weight is slower with bands but many GBP patients look wasted and gray in the first six months from the rapid weight loss and the malabsorbtion of nutrients. Both procedures have pros and cons. Keep reading and learning about both procedures and you'll be able to make your decision. There are forums that have more GBP people then banders, this site has mostly banders on it.
  11. I know my best friend has looked into both bypass and banding. The best thing with banding is that you keep your insides the same. And once you do bypass, you are done. It can not be reversed. She and her doctor decided to try lap banding first, and if it is not successful, then she can look into bypass. Also, he stressed...that with banding you have to exercise. It is a TOOL...bypass, the weight will come off no matter if you sit on your duff or if you exercise....just some food for thought!
  12. Anyone here care to discuss their experience with a low-profile port? My port is becoming VERY noticeable, especially when I exercise. It looks like I have an "outtie" belly-button just below my rib cage. :rolleyes2: My doctor many months ago mentioned something about a low-profile port. Before I go back to him, I just wanted to see some experiences here. Did your doctor replace it free? What it an in-the-office procedure, or will I have to go back to the hospital? The more weight I lose and more fat I lose, the more uncomfortable the port gets. All in all not a bad problem to have. My sig is a little out of date. I'm actually down to 205 now.
  13. For years - I have probably been up and down 40-50 lbs three or four times in my life - Adkins or Sugarbusters seemed to work the best on me. Now I find myself one month out of sleeve surgery and not able to eat red meat or chicken yet (which for years has been my mainstay - avoid the carbs and eat the lean meats right?). Since the surgery I am not hungry at all. The only way I know to eat is I get a weird kind of pain in the middle of my back and realize it is meal time. Presurgery I did the shakes and protein pudding and lost some pounds and thought the shakes would work for me after surgery. I am not sure what happened but since the surgery the shakes make me GAG. It is so weird to have to 'make" myself eat something. After years of being able to eat everything and anything.....I find myself standing in the kitchen scratching my head ALOT. I am really not hungry. I think to myself "drink the shake" and almost immediatly think "barf". I have ordered the chicken soup with protein added. I am hoping when it gets here that will help my problem. I really can't eat enough real food right now to meet the protein 40-50 mark and I really just can't do the shakes. Will there come a time when I can eat enough meat to not have to do the protein supplements? Will it hurt for now if I only get 30 ish of protein for the next couple of weeks? I am loosing alot of weight and my energy and stamina feel fine. I have lost 37 lbs so far (10 were presurgery). Thanks for any suggestions.

    Aetna 1 pound rule

I have completed everything. During my 3 months of Nut appointments, my weight fluctuated. I lost 3 lbs and I gained 3 lbs. My end weight was the same as my start weight. My net gain was 0. Aetna denied me because I gained weight. Once I lost the 3 lbs, I had to keep it off. In phone conversations they tell me it’s because I fluctuated, the denial letter says I gained weight. They Aetna reps also tell me it’s not a lost cause. These things usually get overturned on appeal. The peer to peer appeal was denied. The doctor is in the process of filing the second appeal. Aetna tells me I can resubmit my initial claim in October if the appeal is denied. I have no other appointments scheduled for nut, it seems like maybe I should... just for the weigh in. I am little nervous to call and ask though, because I have lost weight and I am afraid that I will gain a pound back and screw it up again. I knew Aetna had the one pound rule, but I was under the impression it was a net gain. Anyone had any experience with anything like this?
  15. God bless you! Just know you are going to feel like crap for a while! But you will start dropping weight! In s month, things will be very different! So don't worry and get lots of rest!
  16. I'm a patient of Dr. Gantas here in Austin. I was sleeved on 1/14/14 and I could not be happier. Dr. G is so supportive and knowledgable. He has been chief of surgery all over the world literally. I attend a weight loss group monthly here in Austin and I would say he is one of the most respected doctors for professionalism and bedside manner before and after surgery here in the bariatric community. I attribute a large part of my success to his struck rigiman. I could not be more great flu to him. I was lucky and did not endure a single problem post op, but a lot of my friends at the weight loss meetings who see him and did have problems post op say he is very good at aggressively treating any issues that would arise. Also when you call after hours and leave a message he personally calls you back. I actually did this on a Sunday a week after surgery. It really impresses me how involved with patient care he is. Good luck in your decision.

    Update And Need Some Advise

Hi apreezy1...are you taking pictures to record your weight loss? I had my surgery on Jan 5th and sometimes feel the same as you until I look at my pictures...only then do I see the difference. Remember this is a slow process, it will come off as long as we do what we are supposed to. Keep up the good work!!

    Vsg Newbie

Hello all, My name is Gina and I am 25 years old. I am a newbie on this site and so far have found it absolutely amazing. Everyone is so knowlegdable and so sweet. I am now 3 days post- op. My surgery was at 11am on August 3rd 2012. My highest weight was 241. Pre-op before liquid diet 236. One day into liquid diet 230 second day into liquid diet 227. Day of surgery 8/3 I was 224. During my hospital stay I went back up to 227. Today I am 224. Any advice for the newbie in town? Reguarding anything and everything! I need as much advice as possible. From diets to excercise esp. Because I am worried about excess skin? Anything you have to offer I will be grateful of. Thanks ❤
  19. Hello! I have finished the mandatory classes, got approved, and am booked to meet with Dr. Quilici tomorrow at 2pm in Burbank! I struggled with weight my entire life, so I've decided on the RNY. 5'1" and the highest weight in my life is 285lbs in my early 40's. I am now 46 and weigh 268lbs have chronic lower back pain (congenital), HBP, and have hypothyroidism. I am on day 1 of my pre-op liquid diet. My lowest ever adult weight was 112lbs and that was in my late 20's to mid 30's and was not a diet any nutritionist would approve . I'm a teacher on summer vacation and was hoping to have the surgery well before school starts so that I can recover in relative comfort, but it looks as though I may not be able to do that and that will have only a week to recover. I can complete a lot of my classroom set up before the surgery, but I'm now wondering if I should prepare to have a sub start the year (which is not ideal and starts the year off on a bad foot). Any teachers out there who have had this surgery with suggestions or advice?
  20. Sleeved Sept 19th in Puerto Vallarta. Great experience, minus the cancelled flights by American! Dr Lopez and his whole staff were very nice. Hospital was very very nice, but brush up on your spanish, as the nurses didnt speak very much english. The hardest thing for me was the two week pre op diet. Since the start of the pre op diet and since surgery 3 weeks ago, I have lost a total of 31 lbs. My BMI was not super high, around a 32.78, but nonetheless, I am happy with the outcome. It has dropped to below 29, and I was told that once that stabilizes, and you heal completely, the weight will start coming off quicker. I hit a stall this week, but its all good. Starting to eat real food again, although very very little, but everything is healing up nicely. No reason to be nervous. You will be well taken care of. Mexico drs and hospitals far superior in my opinion to facilities here.
  21. I scheduled my surgery for June, but am having to push it back to August just due to school and scheduling issues. I'm motivated to lost some weight in the few months until then, though, and I really want to get a jump start on it, as well as get used to the preop diet. Did anyone do the liquids and 1 meal preop diet before you had to? I was thinking just for one week and then try to eat as healthy as I can and work out before my surgery.

    pictures

I've been looking at all these before and after pictures....and I think what scares me the most is taking that before picture and looking at it. I know my view is distorted - I know what I looked like before all this happened - and it wasn't all that long ago. I know I don't look like that any longer and I know I carry my weight different from everyone else....and I know what I looked like 50 lbs ago - kinda... I SO do not want to look at that before picture. I'm afraid I'll literally get sick to my stomach. I've avoided mirrors as much as possible - I don't do pictures since I'm always the one with the camera. Its going to be a difficult thing. Probably the hardest thing of all - seeing the reality for what it really is.

    Pre-surgery question

That does make me feel better. I figured they would tell me if they were going to do any test to scare me away from cheating. I have lost some weight already and that is a good start. My surgery is November 1st at 6:30 in the morn. That means no Halloween candy for me. But it is worth it to have this surgery. I'm getting so excited. To hear that others had no pre-op meal plan makes me feel better. My BMI is 45 now and realistically I just want to get under 200 pounds. But hopefully I can get down to 130 one day. I can't wait to start my band journey! Thanks for replying!
  24. Well after the fill the Dr. said to be on liquids again for 2 days...its the only thing that will keep me full, I hate broths. On the 2nd day after my fill I ate 1/2 cup of mashed potatoes and they were fantastic! LOL. How do you hate milkshakes? It gets terribly easier...especially if you didnt have a fill with your surgery you can pretty much eat normally but like I said if you eat to fast it will hurt. I am making my own way pretty much, guess I am a rebel, I do my own thing and part of the Dr.'s orders. Its my first fill since my surgery and Dr said for me to go back once I feel that I need to...weird right? Words cant express how great I feel I did this...Weight loss varies depends on what I eat and if I over ate (before 1st fill cant really over eat now =[ ). You will look back and see that this is just the tiniest tip of the iceberg.
  25. i was surprised to find out that this insurance covers bariatric procedures! it may end up costing me $2500 instead of 8-15k so i'm excited about that. does anyone else have experience with this insurance? do you know what their pre-op requirements are to get approved? i don't want to do this 6 months to a year of dieting. that seems ridiculous. i've been preparing all my life! shit in six months i could be under 35bmi and then i'm screwed and they won't do the surgery and i'll just gain it back like i always do! help!
