Bernstein diet after weight loss surgery?

You have tried it but went back on regular diet and put your weight back on. Do you think low-carb diet is sustainable for life? I know many opt for Keto and low carb diets but can you personally do it for life? That should be the question to ask. If it isn't sustainable, it isn't for you. After done various diets, I know personally, low carbs/Keto isn't for me. I don't like restrictive diets. They always triggered my binging. So I will always make sure not to intentionally restrict anything from my diet. Of course, a balanced diet is a must. But restrictive diet is a big NO NO for me unless it's something temporary. I won't be able to do it for life nor do I want to make that my lifestyle post surgery.

Bernstein diet after weight loss surgery?

I remember having done with this diet about 15 yrs back. Lost weight and put it all back on plus more. Ever since that diet, my metabolism has been a wreck. It also triggered binge eating disorder in my case which never really went away with the cycle of yo yo dieting. Dr. Bernstein diet or any other such restrictive diet, I wouldn't recommend it anyone. Dr. Bernstein's diet is not only low carb, but also an extremely low calorie diet. I used to consume around 500ish calories in a day and back then I was too young and inexperienced what that can do to one's biological system. They also don't focus on getting appropriate protein in. Their main focus is to cut down on all macros to make sure you're losing weight. That also meant you would be losing your muscles along with it. I have faced the repercussions of that diet for over a decade. In my case personally, I wouldn't recommend any sorta restrictive diet for life because it can trigger binging which can be catastrophic. One of the reasons, I opted for bariatric surgery is because it does provide restriction on protion control but also helps with stabilizing the hormones and thermostat. I don't anymore have the tendency or feels to binge. My cravings aren't crazy either nor do I think of food all the time. The constant head hunger isn't there nor do I have the constant voice telling me to order this food or that. Anyone who struggles with binging, please do yourself a favor and don't ever take the route of restrictive diets especially after you're given a shot to fix your mess with this surgery. Yes, bariatric surgery also comes with its limitations and lifelong committment, but it is something that is sustainable if you keep your focus. So, in my opinion, I wouldn't recommend it especially Dr. Bernstein's diet. __________ And if you wanna replicate its diet, modify it. Keep it low card but make sure you get enough protein and calories. You also don't need that kinda Vitamin B12 intake. Oral sublingual pills are enough to keep your B12 levels normal. Just got my levels tested 3 months post-Op, and they are in the normal range.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

My procedure was on the 8th. I gained 7 pounds in the hospital from the fluids so needless to say, I felt like a stuffed turkey! I was able to get most of my fluid, protein, and carbs. Today I feel pretty much like normal. I’ve been reading everyone’s posts. Sounds like most are doing well.

  5. I am having a weird psychological thing right now. Although we had a freakishly cold day in GA yesterday, it is time to start putting away winter clothes and pull out spring/summer clothes. I know I should probably go ahead and donate the winter things. Many are too big now just 5 weeks post op. But I keep thinking, “What if I don’t lose weight?” I really like clothes so I will be storing a lot if I hang on to them. Any advice?
  6. I apologize but I don’t know how to reply directly to messages. My caloric intake ranges between 500-900 calories per day. I do about 40-45 minutes of cardio and the rest of the time I’m strength and weight training. Since this post I’m down another 2 pounds but struggling with constipation. Smh
  7. Onederland! It's been 30+ years since a 1 was the first digit in my weight! That's 93 lbs since surgery.
  8. Absolutely. If you ate, say, 600 Calories on a Wednesday. And if, on that Wednesday, you burned, for example, 1800 calories, then you lost body fat. On that day, you lost body fat. And a little of other things, some protein. Not from muscle primarily like people say but from skin and intestinal lining which are high turnover proteins. The scale doesn't always reflect that linearly. You may retain water, or have inflammation. The people who say "I lost 21lb in the first two weeks and in week three I've stalled" - well, it's simple nonsense! They didn't lose anywhere close to 21lb in two weeks. It's takes a caloric deficit of 3500 Calories to lose 1lb which means that they'd have needed a deficit of 5250 Calories per day. Which even if they ran a marathon and ate absolutely nothing, is impossible. So...they almost certainly lost inflammation weight after their operation trauma, glycogen/water if their carbohydrate levels are much lower than pre-operatively and there will be other aspects too like serious dehydration. And this infamous 3 week stall? Well, all those things are largely finished and most people won't be doing the KFC buckets with extra fries in week three, so why is it? Normally increased fibre, giving roughage weight in the intestine and rehydration due to the ability to drink more water.

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hi all. After waiting since 2018 I am finally going for my sleeve on 12th April. I am so anxious and really don’t want to scare myself out of this after waiting so long. I suffer from severe panic and anxiety disorder so it’s going to be so hard to get this done but so far my determination has kept me going. It’s been sprung on me kinda fast lol so trying to get my brain in gear. I’m worried as I’m half a stone over my start weight when I first saw surgeons in 2018. Will they cancel me? Sorry for waffling. Good luck all xxx

    Pain after surgery

Is it a new pain? Are you able to manage it with over the counter pain meds? It could just be your body healing: stretched muscles realigning themselves, organs shifting back into place, etc. It could be your gall or liver playing up because of your weight loss so far. Have you been doing too much or lifting heavy things? If it persists or gets worse contact your surgeon or go to your nearest medical centre. All the best.

    Weight loss after surgery

Yes, it’s just over 24lbs which is a decent amount of weight loss for most people. It’s not a race. There ‘s no gold medal or media covered celebration for how fast you lose. You will lose weight at your own rate. Some are slow losers. Some lose more quickly. There are too many factors beyond your control which influence the rate of your loss: age, gender, weight loss/gain history, existing health conditions, medications, etc.
  12. Hi whispers, I lost most of my weight with band (333 to 183) but then I gained it all back. When I started my weight loss pre- RNY I was back at 333. I'm now down around 160 and I lost it over a little over a year. What made bypass better for me: Food doesn't get stuck. I don't throw up. I don't have acid reflux (well, much. I'm one of the unfortunate ones that still has some). At 2+ years out I eat a "normal" amount --- normal for normal weight people, not my pre-surgery normal. That can be good or bad as if I eat the wrong things I will get too many calories. But it is better than with band. With band, if I was retaining water, or on my period I may only be able to eat a bite or two some days. Other days it felt like I could eat anything. For what it's worth, I also really embraced exercise and walk almost every day, hike multiple days a week, and hit the gym a few times a week now that they are open again.

  14. I just signed up for my first 5K race (on Mother's Day!) and suddenly I'm so emotional that I'm shaking. I've done several 5Ks in the past, both before and after my lapband in 2013 (lost 95 lbs, got pg then gained it all back plus more), but I just can't believe I'm back and going to be able to do this again! I'm in tears thinking about how much I've changed in the past year (sleeved on 3/26/21), and I'm so proud that I'm bursting. I'm half way through week 4 of Couch to 5K and things are going awesomely. I'm scared too, though, because I have fears that I'll tear something or get injured. And anyone who did C25K before knows the dreaded 20 min run is next week. I'm trying to be super careful and methodical about my stretching before and after training so I can continue running. It makes me feel invincible.

    Update On Me (Surgery: 5/19/21)

UPDATE: I go in this week for another regular check up with my family doc and so today he had me get my cholesterol and my A1C done again. My LDL was 137 which is weird cause it was 135 in September. I would think it would have improved and gone down more. NOT go up.....even if it isn't up by much. My A1C was 5.6 down from 5.8 in September. I would have thought that would have gone down more too. Especially since last March it was 6.7 and went to 5.8 in September last year. BIG difference in just 6 months. So why was this last 6 months not so good? Also been stalled for about that same amount of time. These things make me think even more that maybe I should have stayed at my normal Metformin dose so I'll definitely be talking about that this week with my doctor. As much as I wanted to come off the meds it just may have been too soon. EDITED TO ADD: So even though I have an appointment with him this week he called me to go over the results already. He said my sugar numbers are excellent and responding well but the cholesterol isn't responding as well but it isn't terrible. Anyway, he mentioned Metformin and my weight loss and stuff and then I briefly said that I wanted to discuss it and why and he then mentioned that there are better medications than Metformin that accomplish the same stuff for my sugars but also help with weight loss so we'll talk about that this week too. Not sure what medication he is thinking about but I guess I'll see.

  19. I think 22lb is great. Well done! Are you still losing? Are you enjoying your life? Remember, if you lose 1lb a week, that's your goal weight by next summer. Relax, smile, have a cookie.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

I’m not sure how to respond directly to you @LilaNicole20 so I hope you see this. They actually didn’t weigh me the day of surgery but from I remember the last time I weight myself before then I was 283 and haven’t weighed myself since then just because my doctor told me not to worry about that for now. It was sooo hard for me to get in everything yesterday but I’m gonna try today. I was only able to get in one protein drink, Powerade zero and half of a yougurt. I think any trapped air has moved over to my right underarm(if that’s possible?) that’s what feels the most uncomfy right now. And yes I can wait until this feeling is gone. They also prescribed me Oxy but I haven’t been using it that much, I do take it at night tho because I’ve been sleeping on my stomach lately just because that’s my perferred way and it cuts down any pain. And lastly nope I haven’t had a BM yet, just gas from time to time. They put this sort of clear film on my incisions that are supposed to break down as they heal, so I don’t really feel any sensations from them it’s a weird feeling I can’t describe lol
  21. You are working out 1-3 hours? That’s incredible! You’re probably gaining muscle weight, even if your attention is in mostly cardio. Keep up what you’re doing and I bet one day soon you’ll see a huge drop all of a sudden.
  22. My surgeon explained to me the that the muscle tightening portion of a tummy tuck is to basically sew the gap between the abdominal muscles together. See those six packs on super fit people? Im referring to that vertical line between the “packs”. pregnancy and midsection weight gain push this gap apart resulting in outward bulging. Sewing the gap together give a tighter, flatter look.
  23. Vegetables also have carbs, so do dairy and lentils/beans. So it really depends. Plus, like few others mentioned, even my program isn't restrictive on carbs or fats or calories. My protein and carbs content more or less align in numbers. So you shouldn't get too bogged down with numbers unless you're eating heavy load of calories. I feel your workout sessions are heavy 1-3 hrs starting in about 5 weeks in. Though your program recommendation may be different. With such heavy workout, you also have to take into account muscle mass which may be replacing your fat loss. Hence slower weight loss. Personally speaking, such exhausting workout, only a month after surgery, sounds a bit too much for me. But if it's working out for you, might as well.
  24. @la0525: 3.5 yrs out. Average 1800-2000 a day for maintenance. In weight loss phase i was doing much, much less. But once that was over, I upped my cals to the levels it is now (actually my avg calorie intake was higher 2000-2200 around year 2 cuz i was exercising lots) Regarding the issue number of calories, it’s actually quite easy to take in a high number of calories in the early months (or whenever, for that matter): just eat low-volume, high-cal foods. Like butter, oils, sugar, sauces/dressings, alcohol, fatty meat, cheese, nuts, etc. And of course candy, chips, etc. I mean i could/can eat more than one serving of chicharron/pork rinds (50g+) easily and that would be 500+ calories already. I think the best way to utilize the small stomachs for weight loss in the early months is to identify what foods fill you up and which ones are sliders, and eat accordingly. This will be different for everyone so it’ll be trial and error. Of course this is a simplistic directive as nutrition and individual food tolerances are important factors. There used to be a member on here that would share pics of the ridiculous amounts of food she would eat (in volume), but total calories were surprisingly low cuz she was very creative with her ingredients. So when you read about people who can’t eat any more than x calories and get discouraged because you can eat 3x calories, keep volume and calorie density in mind. Good Luck! ❤️ …and CONGRATS on ur anniversary and successful weight loss! The 80lbs loss SHOWS. You look great!

How many tacos one year out?

I love to make this for company! I’m 7 months out and could eat two but measure my meat and skip the taco. I find that I do have to work hard at this or I gain or plateau. When not entertaining, I save leftovers in OXO toddler Tupperware in 4 ounce containers that are great for lunch.
