I currently have a BMI of 41, so I fit the guidelines for WLS. Aetna requires me to spend 3 months jumping thru hoops, including doctor supervised diet and exercise. Do insurance companies base approval on the BMI at the beginning of the diet/exercise or at the end? If my BMI drops below 40 by the end of the 3 months, will they then say I don't qualify because I followed all their instructions. Anyone have any experience with this? Karen

After 8 years with a moderately successful lapband I am revising to RNY Monday morning. I've been painfully aware of my port for months now and can't wait to have it removed. I am praying that no lasting damage has been done and all goes smoothly. I know many are in my situation so I will update my progress next week - wish me luck!

Ok guys....... will be three weeks post-op on Monday and while I have lost 22.5 lbs the last couple of days have been horrible. My family went out to eat for the first time since surgery and I must say I do well with "real food" because I just cannot eat as much, however, I ate something high in sugar although fat free and I was able to tolerate it a little too well for my liking. Due to my recent testing of different foods, all next week I will be placing myself back on full liquids starting tonight. I am not getting enough protein so I will do a shake for breakfast and that one shake will be half of my protein for the day....idk I guess no I know I am still getting used to being sleeved and I am by no means addicted to food where I am in danger of sabotaging or allowing my surgery to be in vain, I just feel as though food was ruling my life before surgery and it still is just in a different way! I tried the breakfast shakes from Carnation and the milk is tearing me up, so will try Soy and I am just kinda bored with food right now! If I don't eat I am weak, irritable, moody and if I do eat I am uncomfortable, feel defeated after four bites and bored.......this is really just a vent but I have stalled due to my poor eating habits.....Please tell me what you guys did at this stage to get out of this funk! I really don't want to see another sugar free popsicle! I am going to try my hand at making my own smoothies next week so we will see how that goes! ARRRRRRGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH I do not regret the surgery I just didn't prepare for the emotional rollercoaster that was to come. I find myself even frustrated that I have no clothes that fit, everything is baggy 3 month post op where are you. I feel I will never make it, maybe going back to work is a good thing..lol Going to try gym this week too so I am excited. Ok done with vent! Thanks for listening you guys are the best!

Hi all. I was sleeved on Nov 17th 2010. I have been feeling pretty good and doing the liquid diet. I haven’t had too much pain after the initial 4 days. A couple of days ago my lower left abdomen started hurting. It was kind of a shooting pain but not on the incision. I can’t place when it started but I did pick up my 3 year old a couple of times earlier then I should. I currently have a cold/sinus infection and this morning had some blood in my nasal mucus stuff (I know… gross). Anyway between seeing a little blood and the stomach pain, I am a little worried, but I have been told you would “know” if something tore. Has anyone had a tear that could explain what it felt like? Thanks

Just curious as to how many cc's before you hit your sweet spot. I had my 2nd fill yesterday and now have 4.5 cc's. I was a bit bummed at doctor office since I lost 11lbs since surgery (June 4, 2009). I see how amazing many of you are doing and feel like I am losing beyond slow - the doctor said I am doing well, but 4lbs in 5 weeks.

8 weeks PO: in LOVE with my surgeon
Damaris67 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I read all the stories: complications, unable to eat or drink, drains! None of that for me. I lost 35 lbs as of today. My sleeve is not too big or small. Just perfect. I just LOVE Dr. Mark Pleatman for being so incredibly skilled and experienced. Love, love, love. I am in an incredible shape! I can EAT. Super small portions, but I can eat! I could have been one of those patients suffering so much post op...GRATEFUL! RELIEVED! THANKFUL! -
Too Tight?
54Shirley replied to gotmyeyeontheprize's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Go easy with it. Remember warm liquid will relax the muscles, and cold will contract ! That's probably why you threw up !I would leave the pop cycles in the freezer Focus on Soups, and Shakes for about 3 days (since you threw up !) Then switch to mushies for 2 days, then try food. That sounds like a plan, and that's the way they do it where I go, and that is the rule for under Fluoroscope. -
I am 9 weeks post op and I am down 34 lbs. SD was 12-7-12 and I weighed 283 today 249. I feel great knowing that being that I am losing!!! I am sure I am not getting ALL daily protein in but its still a work in progress. For the past month I have worked out 5 days/week. Is this an average weight loss or should I have lost more? I guess I am feeling a bit like my progress is slow and I am not going to be where I want to be by the time 6 months get here in this rapid WL phase.

I agree with Rosie T, such a nice post, I’m about 1 week behind you and I understand exactly how you feel...you are doing really well, I’ve read a lot of your post and I commend you so much for having self control because you cook for your family and I can imagine it can be hard especially making some of your favorite meals that you all used to enjoy together...kudos to you!! I only have to worry about myself as my son is grown and on his own. But like I always say one day at a time. Congratulations hon, you are doing great!! Keep up the good job. We got this!!! 🙌🏾

Carbs can be a friend or foe and everyone has their own sensitivity to them and the type and timing seem to play key roles. With me, they are a friend to help me with my weight lifting. I have lots of lean Protein and a good number of complex carbs for my 2-3 meals after a workout on days I lift. I really limit my fats those days. The few days that I don't lift, I have more fat (good fats, not saturated if I can help it), and less carbs. For me, the only good carbs for me on my lifting days (4-5 a week) are broccoli, quinoa, oats (no sugar), green Beans and maybe a little brown rice or sweet potato. On those lifting days I probably easily get 100+ grams of those complex carbs along with 100-120 grams of lean protein. The 2 days a week that I don't lift, I'm pretty much low carbing it to around 30-50 grams, but if I go a little over with veggie carbs, I don't really worry about them. My cardio days (1-2 a week), I'm mostly low carbing it.....for now. If my body fat % ever gets low enough, I'm sure I'll have to add a few more carbs on those days to help with energy and recovery. That would be a good problem to have..... With all of that said, the simple carbs......... I try to totally eliminate. With the key word TRY.........but on a rare occasion, I'll fall off the wagon with the sugary or white carbs. Since we are all different, the best way to find out is by trial and error I suppose. Just try to be informed with your nutrition (like with your MFP) and in tune with your body's sensitivity to them and that will probably help a lot. Not sure, but hope this helped.........

Emotional Roller Coaster Before Surgery. Is This Normal?
andi0120 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery is scheduled for 2/29 less then a week away and I find myself an emotional wreck! I can't sleep my nerves are going crazy. I'm excited but still nervous. I've done enough research that I'm aware of side effects and mishaps but honestly that not bothering. For every horror story I read there are 10 awesome ones. This morning I actually had a wave of sadness hit me that I may not be able to eat certain foods again. From that emotion came anger that I allowed my happiness to be become so dependent on something life food! Over the years the weight has definitely make my self esteem close to zero. Even on days when I thought I looked good the pictures after the fact were a reality check of what I truly looked like. I turned 40 in Jan. My boys are now teenagers who only need me for rides lol. I spent much of my 20's and all of my 30s being a single mom. So I felt like this would begin a new chapter of my life where I could start taking care of me a little more. Anyway just felt like venting. I love this site because it allows me to do so. Just confused why I have been hit with this sadness. Anyone else go through this???? -
Emotional Roller Coaster Before Surgery. Is This Normal?
andi0120 replied to andi0120's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks everyone feel so much better after reading this. I pretty much knew I lost it when I was on the way to Walmart and realized I had on different shoes one great one black. Same shoes different colors Uhg. So glad I realized in the car and not the store lol. Good luck to everyone who also have surgeries scheduled for this week. I'll be praying for us all and waiting to share victory stories on the other side. Peace and Love -
Wow, I had no idea hormones were stored in fat and realeased during rapid weight loss! My re-banding surgery was 3/17 and my TOM was so messed up after my surgery. The first week I cried off and on for no apparent reason and I couldn't understand because I was so happy that I got to keep my band. Thanks for shedding some light on this subject!

I had this too and found out that there were two primary causes. 1) The relationship with food has changed. If you used it to sooth yourself in the past or if it was just something you looked forward to throughout the day . . . you have to adjust to do something different. It is hard in the first couple of weeks. 2) Hormones are stored in fat and are released when you go through periods of rapid weightloss. This puts many of us on an emotional roller-coaster and even affects are monthly cycles in strange ways. Hormone fluctuations are one of the most common culprits of mood swings in the early months after banding which is also a time of rapid weightloss. It gets better. You will be feeling normal in no time :0)

Emotional Roller Coaster Before Surgery. Is This Normal?
blueluna75 replied to andi0120's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh honey everything your feeling is normal....I went through the same thing. In fact me being a single mom as well I'm pretty much tied to the house. Even though i hated my weight food was the only thing that made me happy...all those flavors and different textures and combinations...to never be able to indulge again??? I almost backed out. to be able to buy a $5 meal and eat it instead of 4 bites and walk away....to me that sounded horrible. Food was my enjoyment. Even now a week out of surgery I am going through those same withdraws of did I do the right thing? I took away my vice, my happiness, what do you mean I can only eat a breadstick and not the Pasta or desert?? This is something I'm sure will always stick in my head, but with most people the health aspect is more important. I knew I couldn't drop the weight to my ideal goal and stay there for long, it's just not feasible anymore. I'm getting older, health complication are becoming more and more and my metabolism is slowing down. This takes the guess work out and makes you goal achievable. I'm down 12 pounds since I started preop and I think it's due to the fact i have been on Clear liquids the whole time and have another week before I can start Protein shakes. You will always have that in your head yet when you see yourself getting smaller, your portion size isn't as important anymore. It takes a while for the grehlin to really decrease...but when it does you really won't have a desire for tons of food anyway. Good luck with everything and I hope you the best!! -
3 years post op.... Now struggling
michelecaples replied to kavi's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would think if you back it up and start over it may work. Go back to all liquids, then progress up the ladder again week by week. -
Sleeved on thursday
sherrypep replied to princesx01's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved monday and my stomach is still bloated and swollen. When I had the band done it took a few weeks for mine to go down. It is uncomfortable but I walk, take Gas X, and still mine is big. Hang in there. -
Benadryl (children's liquid), warm bath with Aveeno oatmeal powder, calamine lotion & aloe Vera (after the bath). That's what my doctor recommended for me and it made me feel so much better. I had an allergic reaction to something in my chewable Vitamin that caused the severe itching and all-over rash that accompanied it. I still do the Aveeno bath at least once a week and it is heavenly! I would check with your doctor if your symptoms get bad and see what he recommends. Best of luck and I feel for you!

Down 70lbs in 3 months and loving it

I have begun my journey and started thru my "requirements"-attending la minimum of 2 support group mtngs, visits with nutritionist, psy eval next week, blood work in Jan. However, upon reading the requirements of Mass Health, it says they decide on it case by case. My question... my fear-is Ill fulfill my 6 mos requirements only to be denied. Ill be devestated. Should that occur-I will consider traveling to Mexico. Anyone else out there dealing with Mass Health able to offer any input? My bmi is 40 plus and I have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, high blood pressure and have osteoarthritus in my knees. Help! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using the BariatricPal App

I was a regular- full sugar- coca cola drinker. Up to 6 cans a day!! I was sure I couldn't live without it. I cut I down to 1 a day for a week- that was hard but doable. Then I cut it out completely. I did this a month before my preop so I was fighting one problem at a time. Worked wonders!!! Now I'm down almost 90lbs and I haven't gone back to caffiene- I'm not planning on it either. I find I have SO MUCH more energy than I used to. Just TRY to hold out and see how it goes.

I am not going to lie...drink REAL coffee 1 cup in am. Was coffee junkie before surg. 3-4 cups a day. Now one (and maybe drink only 3/4 of it) in am and take my Vitamins with it so I am not going to fuss at myself too much for drinking it. My hubby thought I was crazy too. His mom is really heavy and has developed diabetes and he is scared of loosing her and I think that was the only thing that kept him from telling me no. Good luck! One of the best decisions I ever made. Sleeved in May down 56 lbs...

These passages state slow & easy don't over rush activities swimming which I love uses just about all your muscle groups try walking excerises in pool first. You'll get there
