  1. I think many of us have that problem, this holiday season. I have an article on stalls that may help explain your problem if it's not like mine (too much food). Our bodies use glycogen for short term energy storage. Glycogen is not very soluble, but it is stored in our muscles for quick energy -- one pound of glycogen requires 4 lbs of water to keep it soluble, and the average glycogen storage capacity is about 2 lbs. So, when you are not getting in enough food, your body turns first to stored glycogen, which is easy to break down for energy. And when you use up 2 lbs of glycogen, you also lose 8 lbs of water that was used to store the "easy" 10 lbs that most people lose in the first week of a diet. As you stay in caloric deficit, however, your body starts to realize that this is not a short term problem. You start mobilizing fat from your adipose tissue and burning fat for energy. But your body also realizes that fat can't be used for short bursts of energy so it starts converting some of the fat into glycogen, and rebuilding the glycogen stores. And as it puts back the 2 lbs of glycogen into the muscle, 8 lbs of water has to be stored with it to keep it soluble. So, even though you might still be LOSING energy content to your body, your weight will not go down or you might even GAIN for a while as you retain water to dissolve the glycogen that is being reformed and stored. I hope this helps.
  2. Hi everyone. I had my gastric sleeve surgery on Wednesday, 12/19/12. I came home from the hospital on Friday, 12/21/12. So far, I am still on liquids but I feel soooo full all the time. It's really uncomfortable. I have to force myself to get my Water and Protein in. I am doing my best. My follow-up appointment isn't until 01/03/13 due to the holidays. I live in Cleveland, Ohio and had my surgery done at the Cleveland Clinic. My diet is "self-advancing." So, basically, I have some guidelines and I move along as I feel I am able. I am supposed to stay with liquids for 1-2 weeks and then move on to pureed foods for another 1-2 weeks and then on to soft foods. I really enjoy reading about the menu/food options on this forum because they offer more detail than my guidelines do. Thank you, in advance, for that. So, just a couple of questions... Did anyone else here have surgery on 12/19/12? Did anyone else have surgery at the Cleveland Clinic? Did anyone else experience this fullness I am having? If so, how long does it last? Also, I have a blog where I have been writing about my journey leading up to surgery. Feel free to check it out if you would like... losercoop.blogspot.com Merry Christmas everyone!

    Not losing

If you dont stop obsessing for every pound now, you are going to be sorely upset when you go a few weeks and lose nothing. Peaks and valleys for weightloss, never a constant loss. Sent from my SM-G930P using the BariatricPal App

    Banded 12/27

Just wanted to introduce myself. I was banded 12/27 and tomorrow will make 4 weeks since then. As of today, I'm down 17 lbs from the weigh in the morning of surgery. I had the iLap procedure (with stomach plication). My co-workers and most of my family have been very supportive (with the exception of my mother in law). What I have come to realize is that a positive mental attitude is key. I've changed my entire outlook on eating. Not as a thing to socialize at, or do when bored, but as something to provide nutrients for my body. I may have gone a bit overboard, but I now eat organic as much as possible and make sure I have my daily vitamins and protein. I'm working out 4-5 times a week starting off slow and building up. No one can go in from being a couch potato and expect to get on the treadmill for an hour. I started with 20 minutes have worked out up 30 and added weights to help tone up. Any other workout suggestions would be great. I'm so glad to have found a place with others in my situation.
  6. I see the comments that you mind is hungry after surgery even though your not actually hungry... I've even gone through it once or twice after surgery.... But has any one else dealt with other mind games??? A: I'm not willing to take my "fat" 30/32 clothes out of my closet... They are my clothes, I feel like my husband is being evil by taking them away and putting them in a box.... Seriously when did I become so attached to these clothes??? They have been in the box in the middle of my bedroom for about a week now... I might be willing to. Finally let them go to the closet. B: I've lost 68 lbs... I haven't seen it until today... I apparently still have fat googles on (similar to beer googles)... My clothes don't fit right, I had to buy new bras (smaller band size, larger cup size- seriously ridiculous!)... Everyone knows about my surgery and every one says the see it, mind games tell me they are just being nice... this morning I put on my what used to be a size to small stretchy jeans that I had to lay on the bed to zip and then pray that I didn't bust a seam. Today they zipped with easy while standing and I can put my arm down my jeans with out unzipping them (yes I tried). Getting over my mind games slowly but surely... And today I finally see a weightless difference in my pictures... Thought I would share... The left photo was about a month before preop diet and the right picture is today, 68 lbs lighter! Oh and I managed a promotion, one that I've been trying for for about 3 of the last 4 years that I've worked at the company where I work!
  7. First of all, how long are you planning to be off work after surgery? I ask because the 2oz/2hr thing is something you need to do early out when your stomach is really swollen and you can't really drink all that much. By the 4th week after my surgery, I had basically gone back to my old drinking habits, which were Water and coffee in the morning, a big glass of water 15 minutes before lunch, another big glass of water mid-afternoon, and drink most of the hours after dinner before bed. I get in at least 64 oz a day but you need to be able to take normal swallows to accomplish it. If you can't do that, maybe get a letter from your surgeon saying you need to be excused to drink during work hours? It really is important, I had the flu in Feb. and couldn't believe how quickly I got dehydrated--one day of no fluids was enough to make a huge difference in the way and felt. Fortunately I was able to drink loads the following day and catch up.

24 and 10 days post op

I'm at the "full liquid stage" so I can have blended soups and protein shakes along with water and broth... I see my dr Tuesday so I can get released to start the baby food portion for one week. After that I start soft foods which I'm very excited about. Could be worse I read things from people who had to be on full liquid for a month!
  9. Honestly, i've never been so scared or stressed in my life. Back in 2013 I had started planning my gastric sleeve surgery just to find out I was 7 weeks pregnant. My monthly friend has always been irregular and well since I thought that weighing in at 293 I was too "big" to get pregnant, I hadnt really ever payed attention to my cycles. Having my daughter put my plans on hold for a while, now that she's 8 months old, I am on my 2'd required month out of 3, and am currently on day 36 of my usual 28 day cycle.. This can not be happening AGAIN! Like come on, IDK if it's all just because of stress or not but my all my tests and sonos have come back negative. I really want this surgery more than anything, and I cannot believe I could be going through this all over again. Any advice? I could of sworn I was being safe, I guess you can never be "too safe" because here I am again :'(

    Feeling down :(

Here. Read this. It's about DS surgery, but same concept. It's one of the best explanations of why stalls happen. Although you are in a "slow down" and not quite a stall yet (it's coming though), it talks about how the body just basically needs to catch up to the quick weight loss. Good stuff! http://www.dsfacts.com/weight-loss-stall-or-plateau.php

Friday Morning Weigh In May 22

I, in my hurry to get out the door Friday AM to see my primary care physician, forgot to do the "in-the-buff" weigh in I usually do, so...when I got to the Doc's office I weighed there, fully clothed (sans shoes). I was up a pound from last week, but attribute that to the shorts and t-shirt I was wearing, so I'm calling it even - no loss, no gain. On the BIG plus side I am now medication free from the blood pressure medicine I've been on for the last 6 years! Ta Dah!

    Feeling down :(

You're not going to lose weight in a "straight line." You're going to lose in fits and starts. The sooner you get used to that idea, the less stressed you'll be. Weigh each day ONLY if you aren't going to be stressed out when you stall and don't lose every day. Because you certainly won't. Nobody does.

    Good or bad?

I got a fill a week ago. At first it was too tight as I could not get Water down (while still in the doctor's office). My Dr. took some out (.4CC). Now a week later, I am not sure if I need some more out. The good: - liquids are no problem - I get full on a 1/4 cup of food - I do not get hungry for 3-5 hours The bad - I quickly feel some mild to moderate pain after 1/4 cup of food. I have another appointment with my Dr. this week. I am not sure if I should get another unfill. If my stomach is still healing, I may be at my sweet spot. On the other hand, I don't want pain every time I eat. I also think I need more than 1/4 cup of food to get the nutrition I need. Advice, experiences, perspectives?
  15. Happy Friday everyone! I ate scrambled eggs for dinner and held them down this time! For the last three days I feel like I have something in my throat all the time? It is kinda discouraging me from drinking or eating the things I can eat at this stage. Does anyone have/had this going on, does it go away? Last question for today is does the burping after every bite I take go away or subside? I have never burped this much in my life. SW: 326 Surgery day W: 295 CW: 271 GW: not sure Sleeved: 7/15/13

    Jitters

if you commit to follow the rules, the process of the sleeve will help. I am 3 weeks out, and could not overeat if i wanted to. A few bites of soft foods and I am full. I am no longer "chained" to food, no longer always wanting to stop and grab a diet coke and a snack, or something from a vending machine, or taking a large portion of food. I really love the freedom from food that I feel. Starting at my 1-week-pre-op weight, I am now down 28 lbs (at 3 weeks post op) Was 263, now 235. Good Luck, I hope you are happy and confident as you move forward. Having this place to check in with is great for support and questions.

    2 weeks out

I was told 4 weeks before the pool and/or baths. Good luck to you, this time really will go by fast and you'll be working up a sweat before you know it! Can you speed up your walks? I remember I started working up a good sweat when walking early out. I added more miles and sped things up.

    Long term food plan

Ha, we are in the same boat. 2 weeks post op. One more week of full liquids. I'm hungry! I spoke to Nut today and she said to stay on track for another week and increase my protein as much as I want. i hate sf, ff stuff. I dont find it real food. Frankenfood. Only sf I do is crystal light. So, I make fresh soups and fruit infused waters and teas. ina garten's roasted tomato basil soup is awesome. Easy, puréed and strain through a fine strainer. Love it. I made this before surgery. Adding plain yogurt to bump protein and make it creamier. I made a Thai carrot soup which had peanut butter sauce in it. Amazingly! Epicurous.com has a fantastic black bean cumin jalapeño soups. This ne needed about 1 more cup of water to thin. Add a very small amount of liquid cheese (Campbell's cheese soup). Sour cream. Yummy. i make my own bone broth. No chemicals, good protein and healing collagen. Easy and cheap. I can make a gallon for about 9 bucks. I drink my protein shakes to hit my goal, then have fun. The soups are pretty low carb and fat because I'm only eating 1/2 Cup over 20-30 minutes. Good fiber also, which we need. Frankenfood had no fiber. Obviously I enjoy cooking, so I'm keeping busy tring to be creative. Hang in there.
  20. I had pain at the bottom of my left chest/rib cage- but i'm a week and a half out and it has finally moved on- i've read it's from everything being stitched and where it's situated and the nerves it could be hitting and the gas altogether just causes pain-- Mine was whenever I inhaled it would hurt--- I used a heating pad for a couple of days.
  21. Glad I found this post. I have the same thing. I had surgery on May 25th, so I am just a little over a week out. I noticed the pains in my chest/diaphragm area once I stopped taking the pain medication. Now I am starting to understand why they gave so much pain medication. The incisions really didn't hurt much at all, but the chest thing is sort of uncomfortable. I notice it more in the evening and at night when I am trying to fall asleep. I thought that it was gas for while, but I noticed that I had the pain when I was certain that I had no gas at all. It is not really bad pain. I would say that it is more like a dull ache than a true "pain". Now that I have read everyones posts and have reflected back..... the pain probably had to do with swallowing a large mouthful of something or the other. I can recall doing more or less just that a few hours before noticing the pain/ache. Glad to know that should be short lived.

    Good news!!

I have been on a special diet since 1995 and they are telling me that I have to do a 12 week diet to qualify. My GP said that what I have done to get my blood levels down is more than enough to qualify as a dietary requirement. Believe me honey I don't need anymore medical testing. I have things that have been tested so much they glow
  24. Hi all, I have mainly been an observer on this site, so this is my first post. I was banded April 7th 2009, so I am about 3 1/2 weeks post op. I was progressed fairly quickly through the food stages, and now I am on solid foods. I am getting a little nervous because I really do not feel any restriction now. For the first few weeks I did, but now I do not. I am purposely not eating large meals, but I think I could if I kept eating. I am working out and doing my best to watch portion sizes, but I am hungry all the time, and I have stopped loosing weight. I have lost 34 pounds so far in all. I won't be seeing my doctor until 8 weeks post-op to maybe get a fill. Is this normal to feel no real restriction? The doc said he did fill the band during surgery a little, but I don't know how much. Is there a chance that the band has come loose and slipped? I called the doctors office and they told me to watch my portion sizes until I get the first fill, so maybe I just need to be patient. Would it be appropriate to try and move that appointment up 2 weeks, or is it too early in the healing phase? Sorry of all the questions. Any help would be much appreciated! Sam

3 weeks out from surgery and worried

The way my doc explained it to me is this... At first we are only to drink liquids because we are swollen and need to heal. The swelling causes restriction. That is why most of us feel restriction after surgery. As we heal and swelling goes down so does restriction. As the swelling goes down and the healing takes place we are able to eat more. So until we get our 1st fill it will be up to us to be in control. If it were me I would see if you can get your 1st fill around week 5. I hear alot of people get their 1st fill then.
