Even yogurt gets stuck.
pammieanne replied to bypassthatbunni's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@kerber I believe the poster said she's eating yogurt and applesauce... that's pureed if I ever knew it, isn't it? @@bypassthatbunni, talk to your doctor's office and let them know the problems you are having. Each doctor, and each program has different expectations. I am 4 weeks out today, and am supposed to be able to eat soft foods now, but I already know that may not work for me, as I've been sick several times from some of the things I've eaten... my little pouch is a picky little sucker! -
Premier Protein shakes, cut out ALL crap carbs... no crackers, chips, breads (even whole grain), tortillas (even low carb ones, read the package, they're not that low) anything with flour in it... ALL sugar. Period. No alcohol, no ice cream, no sugary drinks. Limit sugar alcohols - think sugar free candy Stock up on whole foods... meat/cheese/ LOW starch veggies (no carrots, no potatoes). Limit fresh fruit to one serving a day. Only shop the perimeter of the store (meat department, produce, dairy case). Get Oikos Triple zero greek yogurts... no carbs, no sugar, no fat... 15 G of protein. Read the original Atkins book (circa 1970's), and do the two week induction. It'll lower that A1C. And read labels... if it's packaged, they can sneak stuff in there...

I'm not sure what is causing my problem with Protein shakes but I too have problems with them. Tried many different brands and all the same. I get what seems like dumping syndrome but weird thing is I never dump to anything else not even sugar and chocolate. So I'm off protein shakes and trying to get in as much protein as possible from my food. cheese is a good and easy option. So is Greek yogurt. Someone told me about Branched Chain Amino Acids as a substitute to protein but I'm currently trying to find out more about that. Hope things get better for you and me Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I FEEL LIKE A MILLION BUCKS!!! I'm glad you're feeling better, too. Still some swelling in the abdomen so I have not fully realized the feeling of absence I am anticipating with the band gone but there's no more spasms and pain in that area. I am grateful and happy! My doc wants 60 grams of protein a day - a difficult task with so little to eat - but I have found a few things that help get me almost there. I found a packaged Protein Drink with 30 g protein that is actually pretty good, Premier Protein makes it and it's available pretty much everywhere. I also nurse an Atkins Lift protein drink, which is pretty good for hydration as well as protein intake, with 20 g protein. I make my own yogurt so I know I'm not getting all the sugar and other crap in the processed, ready-to-eat brands, and mix in a little stevia and vanilla, sometimes cinnamon, too, for a nice little treat. I have this new love of cottage cheese, which I didn't think I even liked before, and 2-3 tbsp fills me up completely. I try to vary what I eat but I have tried to create a regular eating time, too. Eating 3-5 a day is a new habit I have to establish. I've been given permission to try a few things. A good deli ham and cheese sliced really thin, rolled, is one. I requested very thinly sliced so my ham is 4pc=2oz and cheese is 3pc=.75oz. I ended up eating just 1 1/2 rolls and I was full. I was also able to add a scrambled egg but that really didn't sit well at all. Very uncomfortable feeling after eating it so I won't be doing that again soon! I understand some foods are not going to be the same as pre-surgery, with the new anatomy rejecting some things that didn't give me any problems before. I'm good with that. I'll try eggs again in the future, maybe. I STILL have not needed my blood pressure medicine, with my numbers well below the 120/80 that is 'standard.' I take it several times a day to track and am just astounded that, so far, it seems to have corrected itself. When I ate the ham I thought it would skyrocket (I'm highly salt-intolerant), but it didn't inch up at all. I also track my food intake and exercise (I'm walking in the gym 3-4 times/week) on another site (am I allowed to provide website info that's not BP?). The byproduct of all this is I'm down 17 lbs since surgery date! I couldn't be happier and I feel physically well. Keep me posted on how you're doing and share success tips.

OMG I'm Starving!
AnaTravella replied to DFernandez718's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am five days post-op and today have felt really hungry. My stomach just feels upset all the time and although I've taken many liquids in water, broth, some yogurt I still feel like I'm hungry and my stomach is just making noises. I'm so glad you asked because I thought I was just going crazy and did not expect to be hungry so early on. I am also taking Prevacid but I don't know is anyone else on any medication for acid reflex? What are you all taking? Maybe what I'm on doesn't work for me. I finally gave in and had some refried beans but now I just feel sick. Arghhh why is this so hard? -
Hey how are you doing, i feel like i am 100 percent better just some pain from from where my port was. @@redgoddess I love the unflavored UNJURY. I add to coffee, salsa to put on scrambled eggs, yogurt to bump up the protein...excellent stuff!

Pureed cooked oatmeal, smooth applesauce, mashed potatoes, mashed sweet potatoes, and pureed winter squash; try them out and you may need to water them down with water, broth for flavor, or milk for protein or almond milk for taste. Yogurt is a good one, too. You can also puree canned foods like green beans, carrots, tuna, and chicken. The foods that aren’t high in protein (like cream of wheat or oatmeal) you can add unflavored protein powder to. Pureed canned beans are good if you can tolerate them; some people can't.

Maybe try unflavored protein powder (Unjury.com has some in individual packets you could try) added to some broth. I have been enjoying a puréed black bean soup (2 cans) made with onions (diced), a little jalapeño pepper 1 tblsp diced), 6 cups low sodium chicken broth, 1 can diced tomatoes and spices (chili powder, oregano paprika cumin. ). I serve it topped with shredded cheddar cheese. Yum. Lots of fiber and protein. Also I enjoy plain low sugar Greek yogurt. If you don't like sugar substitutes you can use puréed fruit like peaches or banana to sweeten.

@@JenniferPenelope Well, I had pain Friday night while sleeping and the last thing I ate a few hours before bed was greek yogurt. I ate 1/2 cup over an hour so it wasn't a matter of eating it quickly. Then yesterday for lunch I had some oatmeal with a bunch of milk. It was really watered down. While I may have eaten it too quickly, based on the night before the common denominator is lactose. I had eaten oatmeal Friday with much less milk and it didn't bother me.

Had DS Tuesday 060716, am having a really hard time taking my vitamins and drinking enough protein. I feel like I am about to vomit all the time...

What vitamins/minerals are you taking? What kind of Protein? I didn't take many pills in the beginning. It was chewable things or crushed pills in applesauce or yogurt. I was on puréed foods for several weeks. If you PM me your email addy I can email you the docs my surgical team distributed for the first month postop. Maybe they can help you out. -

Week 1 post op but can stomach solids...
ttdish replied to Aimee-Belle's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was eating yogurt and cottage cheese the day I was discharged and eggs by day 4.... BUT... This was allowed in my surgeons plan. It is very progressive, and to be honest, I'm so grateful for that with each post I read about someone one liquids or purees that is miserable. I had no pain or complications, and most of his patients don't on this plan. Of course though, despite my progressive plan, I always encourage others to follow their surgeons plan. -
It's hot and I'm nauseous and just can't eat!
Valentina replied to UpandAtom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When it's hot outside I make the following: I scoop Protein powder or one container of Greek yogurt I cup of frozen tropical fruit 10-12oz of calorie free liquid 4 ice cubes. Blend the jeepers out of it and enjoy a summertime smoothie--approx. 180cal and 15-24+gr of protein. Yummy and so cooling. Good luck and keep cool. Prayers going up. -
Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAA)

If you can eat meat and eggs, then you are on at least soft foods Can you eat Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, tuna, other soft fish, etc? -
I had my RNY surgery on May 25th 2016. I weighed in at 198 during my first post op appointment. I was also cleared for soft foods. I follow the rules and play by the book. I was doing fine until one day last week every thing I ate got stuck.. Even yogurt and apple sauce. I have been taking miralax for a bm because I have not had one since the 5th of June. I do not weigh myself. I don't even own a scale anymore because I have had issues with "the numbers" in the past. The doctors are suspecting that I have a stricture. I have an appointment on Monday. So much different medical advice on what we can eat post op.
MCE1205 replied to Megan1982's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There are different philosophies within my hospitals team of Bariatric surgeons and we find this out during support group breakout sessions. For example, one surgeon allows Fluid intake along with Protein "snacks". My surgeon does not allow fluids for 30 mins after eating. The nurses who are in attendance have to ask which surgeon we had before confirming diet guidelines. I stick to what my surgeon had advised. My guidelines are eat protein first, veg/fruit second and starch last. I get full very fast (I have to work on eating slower). I too would be lost without yogurt. That is my go to food. Refried beans, sugar free yogurt, cottage cheese, mashed potatoes with unflavored protein powder mixed in...I was allowed to have Mac n cheese if it was over cooked and thoroughly mashed first, but I never did it or the potatoes because of the carbs, ricotta bake, lasagna smashed with a fork-although again the carbs are too much IMO, cook an over easy egg using Pam cooking spray and then smash with a fork til it makes egg slop. I ate A LOT of eggs during puréed stage...

How do I tell my surgeon he screwed up?
Sharon1964 replied to thomas1984's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm pretty sure no one said you INTENDED to eat all of that. HOWEVER, the point is, you did. You did what is referred to as "mindless eating". Every bite that goes into your mouth should be deliberate. Now you know for the future, to get a second plate, and put the extra on that plate, and set it to the side. If your surgeon didn't give you specifics on how much to eat (and I'm astonished that he said eat until you are comfortable!!!), then some of us can tell you what our plan was, and you may wish to think about adopting it. I am to eat 1/3 cup of food at each meal. If there is green salad, I can have that in addition to my 1/3 cup of food. Between six months and 12 months post-op, I can move to 1/2 cup of food at each meal. What this looks like in real life is this: Breakfast is one egg with a slice of cheese, or one greek yogurt. lunch and dinner are grilled chicken breast, fish, steak, pork chop, ribs, meatballs, tuna, chili, shrimp, etc. - 1/3 cup. I may have one or two bites of a green vegetable or salad. After dinner I have one sugar-free popsicle. If I have a smaller lunch, I may have a Protein bar around 3pm. When I'm not eating, I'm getting fluids in. I have absolutely no idea how much I can eat, because I have never tested it. -
I would stick to the protien shake in the morning but substitute lunch and dinner with lean ground turkey cooked with some light seasoning and like spice. Also, for a snack, I would have a Greek yogurt. You will end the day around 600 calories, and around 90 grams of protien. Hopefully this will help you! Best, Sanju

Get a lunch box, fill it with things you're allowed. For instance I was allowed Jello, unflavored apple sauce, yogurt plus other things. I also got an 8 oz rubber made shaker cup (with a screw on lid). Filled it with my Protein powder and I would just buy cold Water to mix it with when I got to where ever we were eating at. Not one restaurant said anything to me. Have fun!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Lower BMI Gastric Sleeve Patients
crazyplantlady replied to soccergirl09's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My highest weight is on my profile, 207. That was after I had decided to get surgery and before pre-op diet, and I had kind of gone on a, I'm going to eat whatever I like and not worry about weight gain, rampage, and gained probably 8-10 lbs. I lost that weight and then some on my pre-op diet. I did have my surgery in the US, I'm from alabama and I had my surgery with dr schmitt in birmingham. I did have issues with adjusting to the right portion sizes and learning what I could tolerate. Before surgery, I don't think I had massive issues with overeating, or eating unhealthy foods. I probably ate more than I should have, but I have a very slow metabolism and thyroid issues, so the sleeve has helped me be satisfied with much smaller portions and control my cravings. Before surgery I didn't really eat many processed foods, I cooked my own meals and didn't snack a lot, but I did have rice pretty much every day with my dinner, and some sort of carb for lunch. After surgery, I barely eat carbs. I can hardly fit them in with all the Protein and Water requirements! I have tried to eat a little rice, and protein Pasta but they didn't settle right with me. I'll probably try again closer to my goal weight. I live by myself, and my family is states away, so for me the hardest part of life after surgery was feeling alone and without support. I told one friend who lives states away that I was having surgery, and my parents. No one else, not even my siblings, know I've had surgery. Adjusting to the restriction was hard, but I quickly figured out that I could have yogurt for lunch, add protein to my coffee in the mornings, eat chicken for dinner, and beans/cheese/salsa as a snack. I follow the same routine pretty much every day, and I'm really comfortable with it. I track all my food, I bought a kitchen scale (HIGHLY recommend, helped me with portions a LOT). So I might have "given up" rice, and carby lunches on a daily basis, but if I am out socially then I don't feel too bad about indulging in a few fries or bread. I can still eat anything I want. I just don't feel the need to, and some things settle better than others. I no longer feel the need to finish the whole plate of fries (I physically can't), I'm good after having 2 or 3. Not feeling hunger is great. I do get "head hungry" at times but usually it passes. I no longer feel like the whale in the room. I might still be the biggest in the room at times, but I don't feel unhealthy, and I know that in time I'll be out of the overweight BMI category.
