    Getting my surgery tomorrow

Good luck with your surgery. Everybody loses a different amount due to the weight they started at and other factors. Percentages remain the same, though. I've lost about 30% of my excess weight in 4 months. I could go to the gym doing cardio within 2 weeks of surgery but not lift weights, then I could start weight lifting at 6 weeks.
  2. Good Evening All, It is the "Eve of my Sleeve" surgery and I had no idea I would be this emotional! My surgery is tomorrow and I am one big ball of tears! They are not tears of fear or even tears of joy. Today, I have a deep sense of what it has been like being overweight my entire life. Many were surprised when I announced I was considering Weight Loss Surgery (WLS) because I have always been the pretty fat girl who is the life of the party. I had no problem getting boyfriends, making new friends, and have had an extremely successful public career. No one really knew that I had started not to like the physical part of who I have become. I can even remember frowning upon WLS and not understanding how people could do it! It wasn't until I looked at pictures of myself that I begin to say "now you are just too fat!" After quick weight loss, weight, watcher's, sugar buster's, and a million other diets, I realized I needed real help. Then, my uncle died in February of this year, basically from complications as a result of being obese. It was then that I declared war on the weight! Now, here I am at 36, just a few hours away from a life changing moment. To say I am overwhelmed is an understatement. I am nervous and excited. I can't wait to meet the new me! Thanks for listening ... Pray for me. Surgery is at 9:30am tomorrow!

    Bye bye band

I had my band removed and revised to the sleeve but had to wait 6 weeks before the doctor would sleeve me. I was afraid I would gain weight although I had already done that with the band. I didn't gain any weight in fact it felt like I still had the band. I trust my surgeon. So if he said I need to wait then I needed to wait even if I didn't like it. I knew a lot of people that were had their band removed and sleeved same day. My surgeon told me my stomach needed time to heal.

    Bye bye band

Don't give up. 3months will pass. You will get there. I had band out 9 months ago. I am going for sleeve in a couple of months. I am so frustrated that I can't lose weight like "normal" people do. I have tried to maintain weight with band out, and failed completely. So going for sleeves
  5. I'm so glad that I found this topic! My surgery was June 5 and this week I've stayed at the same weight. My Dr. told me at a recent check up not to be obsessed with the scale that this is normal and to date my loss is 23 lbs, but I was still thinking that I was doing something wrong or that this was a cruel joke like all past diets. Thanks for everyone's support!

    Tell or dont tell

Everyone is different. I struggled with the "Tell/Don't Tell" issue too! In the end I just decided to spill the beans ~I realized it was my decision and I had to do what was best for me. Found everyone to be very supportive because they knew my weight struggles were so difficult for me. I say do what is best for YOU! : )
  7. Well I'll be 8 months out from surgery on Monday. Did another before/after pic. Weight loss is definitely slowing down but I'm quite close to my goal and perfectly content where I am. I wouldn't mind dropping a few more pounds and I'm still losing, just slowly (7 pounds in the last 7 weeks). Overall though I feel a million times better.... I've gone from a 3XT/4X shirt to a regular Large shirt and waist was as big as a 50 at one point but generally a 46/48 and now down to a 34. Absolutely ZERO regrets!
  8. hey there is my buddy Dee:w00t:! i am feeling much better today (sat). are you getting excited? how did you do on the liquid diet? yes my port and incision pain was because i was not that big when i started i was 231lbs. on the day of surgery i was 209lbs. my dr said that because i had loss so much weight he had to do a lot of tugging and pulling. to give you an idea of how small i was, all of my incisions are high up right under my rib cage, that part of my stomache was kinda flat, you could feel my ribs. then you also have concider my height too (i am short) that is why they say everone's pain experience is different. different body types and sizes. it kinda got on my nerves, but all my nurses kept saying that i was so small, and why am i having the surgery. forget all the medical problems i have right? then i had to explain that i worked hard as hell to lose the 22 lbs prior to surgery. But Dee, i feel a lot better today, each day getts better.
  9. I'm pre-op. My insurance co (Tri-Care) requires a period of time to learn healthy eating and weight loss prior to surgery. Prior to seeing the nutritionist I had given up soda which was huge for me. My surgeon gets in my face and says, you are fat because you are addicted to food. I was warned before I got in there with him (I had my big girl panties on thank goodness). Also helped that he spoke from experience--he and his complete staff are banded. The surgeon staright off said get down to 30 carbs a day. Once I looked at food lables I was shocked. Several weeks later I saw the nutritionist--now I don't eat rice, pasta, potatoes. I'm gluten free, so I already don't eat bread. So, 30 carbs...totally doable! You really need this "pre" pre-op time to learn a new way of eating and that eating is truly overrated. We've been eating all our lives, some of us longer than others. I really wanted to jump in and get that surgery pronto quick. I know now, that had I done that, it would have been disasterous. We have to really learn, understand and come to grips with how we got here first.

    Disappointed

We all go through it. It's a normal I went almost 2 weeks without losing a pound and in fact had gained a couple but when it started back I flew off again.

    Fill?

My band was put in and left empty so my stomach could heal from the surgery. This is really a sensitive time for your stomach, so it is really important to follow the rules after your surgery, or you can end up in pain, and even sabotage the whole thing. After about 6 weeks, I got my first fill. Make sure your doctor uses a fouro scope (like an xray machine) when you get your fill. That way they can see how much tighter your band is getting. They will have you drink liquid to make sure it goes through the band. You will feel restricted after the first fill, but don't push your luck trying to eat, eat , eat. The first fill may not be as tight as your second fillwill be, weeks later, but you need to increase your consumption gradually to figure out your limits, and you will lose weight if you follow the rules. You shouold always be able to swallow liquids, no matter what!
  12. Hello all, I am new to this site and was referred by my pt advocate(who has done very well with the lapband). I have started my journey into being a healthier me. UHC requires the 6 mth supervised diet and I have done my 1st visit already. So far I have attended my seminar, had my consultation and met my nutritionist. This has worked out well for me so far because they do everything in the office so, the only thing I need to do outside of them is my psych eval. I'm trying to get this setup quickly since some insurance ask for it at the 3 mth mark (per pt advocate). I was instructed to start a low carb, high protein diet and exercise. Current BMI 42.7, qualifying BMI >40. Needing some advice on: - best protein powders out there? - if I go under my BMI, do I still qualify through my insurance? I have previously lost 80 lbs only to have gained it all back and some. I'm just tired of the yo-yo dieting, plus now the high blood pressure has returned and I'm taking 3 meds. Hopefully I will lose just enough to keep me in the qualifying range but I'm scared, I really wants this surgery. I am a mother of 6 and I want to live a long healthy life. Losing weight has never really been a problem for me, so I should be okay with lapband, gaining it back o the otherhand is what I'm dealing with. The weight doesn't stay off, this is very discouraging to me and I'm unhappy. I'm at 256.8 and 5'5, tired and need some motivation, my goal wt is 150 lbs, that's 106.8 lbs to lose. I do believe this is possible through lapband. The only thing that gives me hope, is my mother and daughters, who supports me 100%. Everyone else appears to give me grief. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks

    Over Weight And Depressed:)

You're not being ridiculous at all. I did a BMI calculation based on your weight and height, your current BMI is 38.7. That is on the high end of the obese range, less than 2% from the morbidly obese range. It doesn't matter that your weight is under 200, for your height, it makes sense why you'd feel so miserable at your current weight. Getting the Lap Band is a very personal decision. Do your homework on it before making the decision. These forums are great for anecdotal evidence and person experiences, but be sure to learn the medical facts as well. Learn exactly what the band does, doesn't do, what to expect after surgery, and what not to expect. I would even find a seminar with a reputable surgeon in your area so you can learn more there. Education will be your best friend in making this decision. On a personal note- I think you're smart for trying to find a solution to your weight issues now before they get even more out of control. I only wish I'd gotten the Lap Band years before I finally did. Honestly, it's the best decision I've ever made for myself. I'm so incredibly glad I did it. Best wishes to you on whatever you decide.

Too much food = chest pain!

Oh, I just ate too much for supper. I worked pizza into my nutrition for the day. I am still under 1100 calories. It has been so long since I ate too much that I forgot about the chest pain that goes along with that. Just a little tonight, but I wish I still didn't remember it..... I worked out 5 days this week so I did a half a workout to day (my 5th day). I am feeling pretty good. The scale said that I gained a little today. That doesn't really happen too often, but lost like 2.5 lbs the day before so I expected a small rebound. I do worry about gaining and what that would do to my psyche. So far so good. I eat when I am hungry. I am not doing low carb, but I am not doing high carb either. I really watch it pretty close. If I start looking for food I ask myself if my stomach is empty...if I am hungry. If not I don't eat. I get about 800 calories a day with maybe 2 days a week getting up to 1000-1100 calories. I know it doesn't sound like much...but I am being very careful. Protien first for every meal. I am addicted to cottage cheese. I know soft food, but I love it. My favorite meals include: 1. my quick chicken salad (200 cal) and a side 2. 3 oz of turkey breast (I measure all my protein) 1/2c cottage cheese (4% - the good stuff) and 1/4 c peas Mixed all together. (350 calories) 3. 2 Hebrew National 97% fat free hot dogs cut up and 3 tblsp. of Great Value Brand hot dog chili sauce. ( 150 calories total) 4. Egg Beaters are a staple for my breakfast. Usually 3/4cup of southwestern. (90 calories) (I have changed my breakfast to a morning star sausage patty and 1/4 cup egg beaters. I had to put in some solid protein to make it last until lunch! edited 12/31/08) There are some of my favorites. I usually get 70-120 gms of protein a day and 30-50 gms of carbs a day. I can't wait for my next fill. 3 weeks from today! :rolleyes2:

    Concave Pits!

Weight loss happens in funny places, huh? Sometimes I notice saggy skin, but a couples of weeks later, it looks better.

  17. doing something brave, and for accountability...saving these photos as my “Day 1”...super ashamed and embarrassed of how far I’ve let myself go, but it’s only going to get better from here... Starting weight (and heaviest) 278.49 pounds, 5 ft tall, age 31, BMI 54.3 (pics taken on 4/17/22).
  18. I asked last week about pain after eating, she expalined that as the muscles start to digest your food, the muscle the port is stitched to may move a bit and it thats waht may be causing the pain she said anything band related will be felt in the chest area Also, I asked her why after and adjustment, it seems like I have restriction and then it evens out and she informed me that you have fat around your stomach band and as you loose weight, you loose that fat also causing the band to have more room, she said it will eventually stop doing that so Im only down 21 pounds in 2.5 months BUT Im not giving up.

    The Waiting Game....

The approval process in the US seems like a hardship. Here in PR is easier for the patients, if you have a BMI of 35 or higher with comorbidities or 40 or higher, all insurance companies must approve your surgery within 15 days of submitting your application provided you include evidence of having tried any weight loss treatment and or exercise plan without success, and the basic medical evidence. Then with the approval you begin the process of nutricionist, and all the evaluations needed prior surgery.

    TOO TIGHT!

Just shows you how everyone reacts differently with the band.....no 2 people are the same. My first fill was 4cc's, and did absolutely nothing. As a matter of fact I was as hungry as ever and gained weight afterwards.
  23. GayleTX

    This scares me

There are no nerve ending on the stomach so you don't feel the band or the stitches at all. And I had to lose 100 lb before I could even feel my port buried in that fat!! LOL!! The surgery itself was a real non-event.....learning a new lifestyle is the challenge. And, as the others said, I was scared of dying from NOT having weight loss surgery. If I had not done it two years ago, I probably would not be here today....seriously! And now I am unstoppable!! It's nothing short of a miracle.:cursing:

    Gastric bypass

It's easy for other people to say we "don't need" this surgery when they have not lived in our bodies and lived our lives and have no idea what we've been through and deal with on a daily basis. As for loose skin, mostly it's not something you can control, unfortunately. It's true that staying super hydrated and lifting weights can help, but really when you're weight training you're just increasing muscle mass and hopefully tightening muscles as well. This does not include the skin in any way. Generally, that's all up to your genetics, age, how much you lose, etc. Congrats on your approval! You'll do great.
