    The Maintenance Thread

    I think you know this, but you are most likely going to have to go well over 1000 to stop losing. I know that seems daunting right now. I was in the same boat as you 6 months ago. I had very limited stomach capacity, and if I ate according the the bariatric rules my cals were too low, just as yours are. Although it's frustrating and a bit scary right now to keep losing, long term, having a higher BMR is a very good thing. As your capacity increases, it will be hard to stay at 1000 cals day after day. I started to have more capacity at about 10 months or so. As a reference point, I'm averaging at least 2000 cals, and successfully maintaining. But as I've established, I am seemingly an outlier.

    The Maintenance Thread

    So I've been at this for a month now, and haven't found my groove yet. I am realizing that this is likely going to take much longer than I anticipated and the thought of it bums me out. Despite my efforts to stop the losses, I dropped a little over 9 lbs in the last month. Which is insane to me (I really shouldn't be surprised, so much of this process is just madness, really). People are starting to tell me that I am too skinny with actual worried looks on their faces. Which is another thing that shakes my head, because yeah, I may also think I am on the thinner side, but I still look pretty damn good, people. Geez. Here is what I've done so far: May 27 - June 04 increased to 1000 cals/day (from 600). This made me feel pretty icky for about a week as I think I was forcing myself to eat beyond what I could, so I went back down to 800. June 04 - Jun 11 decreased to 800/day (MFP says average 756/day) net carbs to 25g, but I didn't do this really, I think my carb-phobia was too strong. June 12 - Jun 18 increased to 900/day (MFP says average 845/day) consistently got to at least 25g net carbs June 19 to today 1000/day (MFP says average 891/day) aiming to hit 35g net carbs, but am really hovering around 25 still. Mr. says that my activity level is likely too much for the amount of calories I am taking in if I want to maintain and not lose. I do not want to reduce my activity because I think that's just dumb (plus i like it!). So that means more calories. Ugh. Am going to try to get my 1000 (without force!) for another week. I had stopped taking my protein shake as I seemed to be hitting my protein goals without it, but I think I'm going to add it back in on top of what I am already eating. That's another 110 cals...

    June 2019 challenge

    Okay so the stress monster firmly has me in its grips. June has been a really horrible month so far as far as stressors go and I found out yesterday that my company paid insurance got termed (my entire family is on it) because of a paperwork snafu from when I was on disability in February for my surgery. Oh I’m sure it will all be fixed in a few days but now I just can’t stop the blind panic I’m in! Lol, my case has been “escalated” to highest priority which will be 3-5 business days to “look into” My daughter horribly twisted her ankle 10 days ago and we were waiting for an approval for an MRI (which won’t happen now) Omg, I’m trying my best to control this horrid stress!

    New around here

    Well Monday started week 3 for me post surgery (15 days) and I have officially lost 100lbs from where I started the program. I have my post op followup on Friday and I expect to return to work next Monday. I am up and moving around great, the surgical glue is starting to come off and it gets caught on my clothing a lot which is not comfortable. I am hoping I'll be cleared to start swimming in a couple of weeks as that was my preferred form of exercise in the 6 month pre-op plan. I am having no difficulties with the approved foods and am still doing two protein shakes a day, but that had been my schedule for the last year so it feels normal. According to my plan week three is Soft Foods so yesterday I was able to have an egg and provolone omelette which I ate about 3/4ths of with no side effects other than a very heavy burp about 10 minutes later. Today I had canned chicken with mustard was only able to do about half of the 1/4 cup recommendation before feeling full. The solid type foods feel different than the shakes, like volume wise I fill up so much faster. I am surprised with how few calories I am eating how much energy I have. Like I have to keep reminding myself I just had surgery and can't do a lot of stuff yet. I feel like I am in my 20's again. Before surgery I was pretty much a hermit. I would work and come home and hated going anywhere. Seatbelts didn't fit, most chairs didn't fit, and I was terrified of embarrassing myself. I feel like I have come so far already and am looking forward to being cleared to exercise, which is something the old me would have never said.
  6. Welcome sibling! We are just 2 days apart. I wonder if the liquid diet..and number of days is related in any way to a person's BMI or ??? Within the specific 'Sleeve' and 'Bypass' surgery forums I think there are topics for 'July 2019 surgeries'...but as the gastric sleeve one is not super active yet, I had thought...why not start one for all July people regardless of which surgery they are having as we surely share the same anxiety, hope, nervousness, fear, etc. Guess we'll see if anyone else joins in here, if not, we know about each other now...lol

    Overtraining & Stalls???? Frustrated.....

    I think your calories are way too low for the way you are working out. I am over a year out, exercise 5 days a week, and I am eating 1500-1700 calories a day. Since getting back to my regular exercise schedule with burning an average of 400 calories per workout, I am back to losing 2 pounds a week. I am 3 pounds from my personal goal, but I think I may try and lose about 10 more to give myself a few bounce back pounds in the future, so I may have to actually increase my calories eventually.

  9. I think this article both makes and misses a couple of great points. What it gets right: 1. Muscle mass does not increase RMR as much as people believe it does. 2. It is not easy to add significant amounts of lean mass - especially in a calorie deficit - especially with age - especially with other comorbidities. What it get's wrong: 1. The goal for us post-op should be to reduce muscle loss as much as possible. It is far easier to keep what was already there supporting our greater pre-op weight than it is to lose the lean mass and then try and get it back. 2. The contribution of muscle mass to RMR does not have to be that large to be beneficial. Rough numbers of course but assuming 3500 calories in 1lb of adipose tissue and a 50lb weight gain over 5 years is a 175,000 calorie excess over 1825 days or an average daily excess of just 100 calories. Could preserving 20lbs muscle during during a 100lbs weight loss be beneficial? Using the article's 6 calories per pound of muscle per day that equals an additional 120 calories per day. 3. The best way to maintain muscle mass is lifting weights. The benefit is not only during the actual exercise but also in the post-exercise period where metabolic rate and protein synthesis remain elevated. This along with HIIT gives you 'twofer" as far as calories burned and also maintains muscles mass. I know people's abilities here vary greatly but resistance training has been shown be beneficial across the board for those who can tolerate it. The fact is many of us gained weight over a sufficiently long period of time that while in a calories excess (and yes I know there are compensatory changes to metabolism both in a calorie excess and deficit but let's keep it simple) that actual excess was not huge. Just 100 calories per day over 10 years will give a 100lbs gain. So my point...I think maintaining muscle mass during weight loss is absolutely important to longterm weight loss and maintenance...evenif the contribution to RMR is not as high as what that charlatan Dr. Oz claims.

    March Bypass Buddies

    Hi all just checking in. It has been 99 days since the surgery. I am down 41 pounds at 160 lbs. I now weigh what I weighed 10 months after my second baby. Another 30 and I will hit my goal. I have not lost during the past week. I hope this stall will go away. I hope my March buddies are feeling good and healthy. Keep up the good work!
  11. slowdown almost always happens after the first month. I dropped down to about 10 lbs a month (give or take a couple of pounds) during months 2-6. After about month 6, my weight loss dropped even further. The more you lose, the slower it goes, because the less you weigh, the fewer calories your body needs. if you're following your plan and weighing/measuring your food, you won't stretch your stomach.
  12. I will be having gastric bypass on July 3. I started my program in Feb 2019, but have battled weight issues my whole life. I am excited and anxious about my upcoming date. I cannot imagine weighing less than I do now. At 42 years old, I've been morbidly obese my entire adult life and obese my entire life. So many thoughts run through my head about this surgery, but I tell myself to take it one baby step at a time. My program only requires 2 days liquid diet, so I don't even start that til July 1.   13. I’m scheduled to undergo surgery today at 10:30. Eek! I’ve been unwisely trolling these boards and now am full of a mix of relief and fear. At the moment the fear is winning out: what if I develop blood clots, what if something goes terribly wrong, blah blah. Sigh. I’m going to try to meditate and let it go. But...well...eek!

    Five day follow up

    Your worries and fears are all normal, I have has extreme dumping in my first month, and every once in a while now, (3 months post op) I remember the day I had an actual mostly solid BM! About 3-4 weeks post op? My family and I actually celebrated even though people talk about poop like it’s TMI! I tried to keep taking sips of water every 10 mins, and all I could stomach was chicken broth for the first 10 days. Jello and popsicles (sugar free) helped a lot. Also, about 2 weeks after my surgery I began to have a fever every day from about 2 pm to 8pm sometimes longer. I had one infected site (robotics) and when I did get the antibiotics, they stopped all digestion. But I made it through. You may have some worries and fears, but that’s normal. And as long as you just do your best to follow the diet guidelines, you WILL lose weight! Cheers!
  15. had gastric bypass DS loop and my gallbladder removed on March 11th 2019. Since then I have gone from 297.7 down to 242. Total of 55.7 lbs. in 3 months and 13 days. But I’m the last 39 days I have only lost 10 lbs. is this a plateau? Is this still good since I have not gained any weight back? I’m feeling better in the last 2 weeks FINALLY.... I had surgery complications and medication changes and problems that caused extra pain and some minor depression, so recovery took longer than “usual” patients. I think? I don’t know how long other people take to get out and about, start regularly exercising (just walking and some 2 pound weights) But the slow down in weight loss worries me. Also, I have a HUGE fear of stretching my stomach back out. Every time I eat I get scared my stomach is stretching at the staples. I would love some feedback of your experiences, ideas, your suggestions, possibly re-assurance that I’m doing ok?? Also, I love to eat fruit, and I try to limit myself to 2 a day, but I worry about sugars... what do you all do? Thanks! Claire

    Gallbladder i

    Did any of you have Gall Bladder issues prior to wls? I have had 2 really bad bouts and several not so bad bouts of Gall Bladder "attacks". I am preop (10/1/19) and after reading some info online, I decided to let the doctor rip it out on 5/9/19. The article I read stated it was better to have it out prior to wls. But, then again....you can find exactly what "you" want to read or hear on the internet.

    I make peanut butter protein fudge. 1/2 cup margarine/butter, 1/2 cup peanut butter, 10 sweetner (Splenda or Truvia) packets and 2 scoops of chocolate protein powder.

    NSV's Spring 2019 Edition

    Well I am a happier camper tonight. TODAY I bought my first pair of Junior-sized Capri leggings. Okay, they are a 19 but in the NSV world we live in thats a Big ✌ Victory. Did not have to jump up and down to get into, didn't have to lie down on a bed to pull up or zipper them. Don't laugh ,my peeps, but they slid right on smoothly. Just enough snugness that it was like shapewear and smoothed my blobby globby thighs into smoothness, and if I say so, I look pretty good. Now I want another pair, these are red like a bandana, maybe a navy blue or grey Heather? Less than $4 in price, so wouldn't strain my budget to buy another. And back when I was a 28-30 W I would never believe I could achieve this before my 1st year was up. Don't know if I'm brave enough to wear them out in public, even though I have seen people who must have been dressed by someone who hated them severely. But even if I am at the upper edge, I once again am a Junior-sized person. Yippee Yahoo!

    Grilled cheese alternative?

    Be careful with the zero carb bread. I’m 10 months out and tried it about 3 months ago. I felt like a balloon was expanding in my stomach for 4 hours. It was awful! I’ve had good luck with Flatout Wraps. The chipotle flavored one is smaller and just like 60 calories I think. Or I do half an original one.

  23. Oh wow, great to hear from you! Ironically...we are at the same point but I noticed today I was foggier than I expected (although yesterday I was LESS foggy than expected..LOL). I have had a bad headache all day today. I did not give up caffeine until..well, I guess since I had 1/2 cup this morning I haven't given it up yet. I'm used to 4 to 5 cups a day though...so that probably has something to do with the headache. I noticed my dr's list is different than the nutritionist he sent me too. They both had soft foods @ first start of the 7-10 days, but since I didn't start until 'Day 8.5', I went ahead and started full liquid diet today (regarding Day 8.5 - on the way out of my doc's office last week, I teased him about being grumpy about 10 days and he said "7"...um...ok, maybe he was kidding? When I realized I should clarify, it was already the weekend so I'm taking a day of soft foods out. I've noticed some interesting variations - there are a few ppl I've seen on here doing a full FOUR WEEKS PRE-OP....I just shudder..LOL. Guess it was good that I already had given up sugar/carbs/etc as I was doing keto. I did something similar last week - one night I went out for Mexican and one lunch at a Chinese place. But it was just 1 meal each day...not the entire days. I did have a drink '11 days' prior but I have not had any alcohol since the 10 days started even though I didn't do the pre-op diet until day 8.5 (that sounds so weird!). I feel the same..nervous..anxious..and right now...a bit hungry..lol. Best of luck to you as well! Stay in touch. I know we have lots of other early July peeps out there!

  25. I'm going in on July 1st too!! One week from today!! I'm 3 days into my required 10 day liquid diet; feeling a little bit in a "fog", but not as hungry or cranky as I expected to be. I had a couple "food funerals", but didn't go overboard with quantities when I did. I gave up caffeine, alcohol, and carbonation just a couple weeks ago, and have been cutting back on sugar but didn't fully cut it until I started the pre-surgery diet. Good luck to you! I'm feeling very nervous and hopeful too.
