  1. I'm 3 days post op and need to drink but it hurts my stomach so bad! Yesterday I only was able to get in 10 ounces. Today isn't looking much better. Were you guys able to get in your liquids??

To track or not to track?

I think super low calorie (e.g. 600-900) works well for first 6 months. The stomach is still healing. If you start out eating low cal at month 1 then eating low cal just becomes something your body gets used to. However, your BMR goes underwater, so to speak, with too few calories and you do want to work on a plan to increase calories gradually when the stomach is done healing (eg 6 months). I can see how 5:2 would be harder to eat low calorie without being very hungry because the body does not know if to be used to a normal day ( for discussion, let us just say it is 1200-2000 calories depending on person) and fast day (under 500 calories). This fast oscillation between calorie days is going to force the body to rev up metabolism (yay!) because it never gets used to one way of eating. However, it leaves you seriously hungry on fasting days (darn it all!) The same principle sort of applies to carb loading on a low carb diet where you could eat whatever you want 1 day a week. It will essentially reset what your body is used to, but you have to be disciplined to only do it for 1 day or the extra calories will get you in the end. I think BTB said it quite nicely a while back in that both type of calorie oscillations (5:2 and low carb, low calorie) are still just keeping the total calories down over the long run. It might also explain why an individual would need to look at long term trends while following 5:2 instead of analyzing results daily. As for me, I got quite used to eating low carb, low calorie until month 6 ( no planned cheat days during this time). After month 6, I gradually increased my daily calories until around TDEE - 300 after reading the success of Susan ( our moderator). Her post on eating TDEE and the increased state of well being (mood, hunger, etc) inspired me way back when. From then on, I spent a few months ramping up the calories until where I am at today, post op 1 year. It is very very very important that you graduate your calorie increase over a relative long time period up towards TDEE. If you do it too fast, your low BMR will store the extra calories and you will gain. This clearly is not desirable. My calorie trends look a little like this: Month 1-3: 300-600 calories Month 4-6: 600-900 calories Month 7: 1100-1200 calories Month 8-10: 1400-1600 calories Month 11-12: 1600-1900 calories. My body is perfectly happy eating in the last bracket and rewards me with a high metabolism and leaning out process. I need this amount of calories to fuel my fitness plan day after day, week after week. In reality, I should be eating about 1000 more calories a day, but the sleeve can only handle so much eating on my high Protein, low carb, Paleo variation diet. I eat every 2 hours or so a mix of healthy Paleo meals and shakes. It may seem like a lot of work, but it really isn't after you get used to the natural flow of it.

Back to Work - Strenuous job

I would think you should be ok. I have a very physical job too. I am an LVT, and I am constantly picking up dogs and bending down etc. I avoided lifting any animals over 20lbs in the beginning. By week 3, I believe it was, I was back lifting over 60 lb animals and carrying them to the scale, into x-ray etc. with no problem. At my 10 day post op check I asked when it was ok to do weights and stuff, and they said 2 moreweeks, so I waited til then (well almost0. But I think you should be ok.

    But it hurts!

At 3 days post-op, no. I was about like you... but then I decided to take it more seriously and drink an ounce every 10 minutes. It worked. Yes every time I took a sip, I could feel it go all the way down and land in my stomach and there was a little cramp every time, but you have got to keep drinking or you will end up in the ER with dehydration. It gets better every day. I still don't get all my water in every day but I'm getting better and better.. some days I get it all in and some days I don't. I am 3 weeks out.

To track or not to track?

I guess I also want to say, "because tracking my food does work for me". Lol. Also, I don't weight my food. I too used to weight and measure everything in every diet i tried since age 10 and I am pretty dang accurate. So glad that's behind me.

    Im freaking out !!!

There was a research study that peppermint oil was as effective as minoxidil (rogaine) for hair regrowth and more effective at stimulating the growth phase. Hair follicles changes phase every three months from active to resting. You can make a spray with 10 drops of essential peppermint oil with a carrier oil such as almond, jojoba, coconut etc and massage it in, leave in overnight and wash out or add it to leave-in conditioner. I am going to start using this now, three months before surgery. It can't hurt at any rate.
  9. Hi, Looking for any comments on what I should be looking forward to, or anyone have good advise to follow from your own experiences. I would love to hear. I think I will need lots of support for these 10 days, and beyond And also any positive things anyone can tell me would be great, I'm getting a little nervous about the whole pursedure, I think anything positive that you have to share about your own lapband journey would help out a great deal. Thanks and god bless! Minnesotalady
  10. Mine took about 10-12 weeks. I had to do the nutritional, psych eval and bloodwork. My insurance originally denied me but because there were no bariatric surgeons in my plan they reapplied for me and I was accepted. Good luck.

    Should I tell my dad??

Secrets can not be kept forever. I understand not wanting to tell everyone due to the stigma attached to WLS. But eventually he will learn the truth. I'd rather give him the information so that he may do with it as he pleases rather then him making stuff up telling people I am on drugs etc. etc. etc. If you don't have the closest of relationships with him (as I with my mom) you can make the choice if you are going to actively continue to listen to his negative behavior after letting him know. Negativity is negativity. I would rather it be about the truth rather then a falsehood that he may be spreading about you. Maybe he will need time to process the info, but my wishes are that with time he will be happy that you made the decision to get you health under control and not live a life full of co-morbid diseases. When I explain it to people as such - that I just want to be healthy, not live with all these obesity related diseases and I admit that I can not do it with diet and exercise alone; they seem to understand it better then just thinking I wanted the easy way out. Since you have already lost 70+ lbs, give him examples of how this has changed your life. Are you sleeping better, concentrating in school better, are stairs easier to handle, more energy, more active? You don't need to sell him on the idea because it's done. I would explain to him that your only request is that he be happy that you made a positive choice in your life so the next 50-70 years is not going to be a living hell. And remember, no matter what he says, it's already done. Nobody is going to put your stomach back in. So he can say what he wants, it's not going to change the fact. I have gone up and down in weight too many times in the last 10 years. When my friends and family can tell me where I tend to lose the weight first on my body, it makes my wish I would have done it at your age. I think it is a great decision to start your adult life with. Kudos to you.

    Anyone tried popcorn??

I eat popcorn all the time. But I only have 1cc in a 10 cc band. Maybe that will change when I'm filled tighter. Just don't forget that you won't be having anything to drink with the popcorn. That took some adjusting for me.
  14. I am 10 days post op. I have had a lot of pain/swelling/tenderness around the large incision for the port. Normal, expected, not a big deal. However, just now I was sorta holding my side and one spot was VERY sore and sensitive to touch/pressure. I know it's where the port is (I can feel it plus the nurse showed me). Is it normal for it to be sore to the touch? I am not sure if I just never really put pressure on it before now to not have noticed.

Very personal ?..... Sex after surgery....

My surgeon cleared me for sex at 4 weeks post-op. My husband is also losing weight along with me although he's doing it by not eating certain foods (no wheat, dairy, sugar or soy). We've been married over 10 years and together over 13 and our sex life is better than ever. He has much more of a drive than I do and sometimes I'm just too tired but once we get going, I'm all into it! Losing weight has allowed both of us to be more "flexible" as we explore different positions. No complaints here

    Restless Legs Anyone?

2 beautiful blue eyed blond hair boys. David is 14 and Caleb is 10. Weird how much we have in common.
  17. Hi - i get banded on May 19th and I am on day 6 of the pre op liquid only diet....when after surgery can I eat a little something? 10 days after surgery is our annual BBQ and daughtes 7th birthday party...will I be able to eat something soft and little, may a deviled egg or if I make really mushed up chicken salad - can I eat 10 days out???? thanks
  18. Wow! Pixie...42 lbs, Meli.....44 lbs, that's awesome. I'm down only 19. 17 the first month, and a whopping 2 lbs last month. I'm sticking to the rules, and I have very few carbs, no sugar. I use my treadmill for about 45 min a day, and doing yard work, gardening, etc almost everyday after work. I feel no different than I did before surgery, except that I can't eat much. I'm just a slow loser. Prior to surgery, I was maintaining 222 lbs on 1200 calories a day, so it's no wonder I have to be at 700-800 cals to lose. But, I know it HAS to come off, I just have to be patient. I guess I need to sign up for a water aerobics class or something, but I live in such a small town, I would run into people I know, ugh! Great to hear from you guys.
  19. I was banded on 10-23-09 and as of today I have lost 40 pounds total. I am exercising, but I am having some loose skin as of now. I have a few Christmas parties coming up and I would like to wear a sweater and I was wondering if anyone has bought any under garments that help hold you in. I would like to know what kind and if they are comfortable. Please let me know if you have any experience with this.

    SO MANY QUESTIONS

Question 1- I struggled. There was a time right at the beginning of the pandemic (1st surgery was Dec 2019) where all I could drink besides hot tea was grape powderade zero (hated artificial grape pre-op) and everywhere was out. I distinctly remember crying in my car, like full on grief crying. I had buyers remorse for several weeks after that wondering if I’d ever be normal again. Be prepared with emotional/ therapeutic support if you’re already battling disordered eating. Question 2- A dry cough is indeed a symptom of gerd. For me, it’s now hiccups. If you’ve ever heard those honking plastic chickens just know that’s what I sound like. I did end up having a revision to RNY and hiatal hernia repair. They don’t remove your stomach, it’s still in there, they just bypass most of it and attach it in a y shape to another part of the intestines while keeping a small portion attached. The only reason I have hiccups again is because I have another hiatal hernia that needs repaired. Would I do it all over again knowing the journey I’ve been on? Absolutely. Would I also be more prepared mentally? Also, absolutely.
  21. I'm just workin on liquids and getting my medications in. I have at least 7 RX meds I must take daily. So I take on every couple hours. So I'm constantly popping pills, THANK GOD they are all tiny because I don't have to worry about crushing them Dr. Castro looked all of them up to make sure they are all okay and not too large. He's definately a keeper. I just have to space them out and not take them at once like I did before. I gained over 10 pounds in the hospital. My hands looked like little sausages. lol
  22. My dad had the opportunity to have weight loss surgery about 20 years ago. He chickened out. He didn't go to my school events; he never saw me cheer or play in the band. He spent most of my life sitting in a chair and relying on other people to get him things. The last 5 years of his life were so bad he was in the hospital more than he was out of them. In the days before he died, he was home. My mom had to call the ambulance, and the ambulance crew couldn't get him out of the house. They had to call in another crews. They still couldn't get him out. They had to call in volunteer firefighters. It took 10 people dragging my dad's naked body on a tarp to get him out of our house and into the ambulance. He died two days later of a stroke. He was 69, and he didn't live life. His weight made him do more preparations for dying than he ever did for living. So to answer your questions: 1.) If you could talk to yourself pre-op what would you say? What would you tell the you that was still undecided about having the surgery? You deserve to LIVE a life that is active and full and healthy. You will not realize until it happens all of the tiny ways your life will become easier and better and happier and healthier. Without this surgery, you will be hurting your husband and your kids because you won't be there for them when they need you to be. It has already happened, and it will again. This weight is keeping you from fitting into too many things including your own life. Don't be afraid of dying -- be afraid of not living. 2.) Do you ever regret having the procedure? Even in tiny moments...like dinner out with friends or around the holidays? Do the regrets ever out weight the results? I don't regret this surgery at all even when out to dinner or around the holidays. I don't miss food. And now, I don't miss my family.

  24. Hi there, Congrats on surgery! I was lucky and was first up that day. Was at the surgery center at 5:30am, was in pre-op by 6, was in recovery by 7:30 and was released to go home at about 10:30am. Was a wonderfully uneventful experience so was in and out in a flash :clap2: Good luck on Monday!
  25. I just had my surgery July 26th. I lost 10 lbs on the pre-op liquid diet and so far I've only lost 3 lbs since the surgery. I know it hasn't even been a week yet but I'm a little disappointed. I've been walking several times a day and am only able to eat about two ounces at a time. Am I just being too impatient?
