If you don't want the surgery and are seriously honest about your calorie intake you need to consult an endocrinologist who will do a full metabolic workup on you. I have two friends that don't even know each other but both have children with metabolic disorders both causing their children to be obese. I know one child takes 4 200mg of Meformin tablets at bed each night to help along diet and exercise keep his weight gain down as much as possible. If you aren't familiar with this is a whopping dose of Rx med use by diabetics type II to keep blood sugar down. You could have a metabolic disorder often hereditary. There's were. My other thought is with the surgery removing the grehlin sp. Hormones maybe that would have a significant impact? Don't know. Good luck on your decision.

Should people barely over 200 lbs or below 200 get Lapband or any WLS...?
strikeuptheband replied to Froggi's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I was banded this month. I tipped the scales at a whopping 201 right before surgery but had lost 20 pre-op. I am 5'3" and had (I say...HAD) problems with high BP, joint pain, and reflux. Now in less than a month, thats all gone! My insurance denied, not because I was such a little bit of fluff, but because my empoyer put in an exclusion. Was it worth it for me? YES! I still haven't lost a lot and havent even had a fill yet, but the other aches and pains have gone away...presumably replaced by port pain...sigh. But that too will go away eventually. I have steadily gained every year and I am now 56 and finally figured out that if I keep doing what I always did...diet, I would always get what I always got....more weight gain. I am now committed to eating healthier and in smaller portions and I need my band to remind me when I have had a healthy portion. My docs office figured out that to be successful, I only needed to lose 60 lbs. I doubt if I could have ever done that on my own. My own personal goal is to get down to 120 or a loss of 80 lbs. It saddens me that the insurance industry is so screwed up with their restrictions and hoops you have to jump through. I mean how crazy is it when you read on these boards of people adding weight in their pockets to weigh enough to qualify or those that wonder if its worth it to gain x number of lbs just so their insurance will approve them. I would never judge another person's desire to get to and maintain a healthy weight. I say good luck to us all on our journey. -
18 years ago, I had a RNY. I lost 124 lbs. I kept most of it off until the last 3 years when I gained about 45 pounds. I have been successful in losing weight that additional weight and am back with 5 pounds of my lowest weight! I did not have plastic surgery 18 years ago and it's my biggest regret. Now that I am stable in weight, I'm looking at plastic surgery. I've talked to 2 Docs. And I'm confused and torn. Doc#1 says Fleur. He says that I don't have much back skin/fat. He can pull the skin forward and tighten it. I have a pronounced belly that hangs quite low and I get heat rashes/yeast infections frequently. Doc#1 says that Fleur should be a great solution. He said it will also take care of my sagging mons. (Which I really want gone!) He will also tighten my abs after nearly 50 years of weight gain and loss. Doc#2 says to do a panniculectomy and lipo around the sides. She feels this is the best option as my frame is not necessarily curvy and she could not be sure of getting a flatter tummy. Let's assume, this is all out of pocket cost. I like both Docs. Which would you choose and why? I could use some insight and advice! Thanks

Question About How The Band Physically Works
DELETE THIS ACCOUNT! replied to audreycat123's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
All food and liquid is supposed to pass through the band, nothing is supposed to come back up. It only takes about a minute for food to pass through the band if the bite is small enough and chewed properly. The band constricts around your stomach and when properly placed, puts just enough pressure on the vagus nerve to help lessen the hunger response. You don't want slider foods because they immediately pass through so it doesn't trigger the "oh I'm not hungry" response. Slider foods are easily over-eaten and usually cause weight gain, like ice cream. -
Seroquel isn't an old drug and it isn't rarely prescribed, it's used all the time. I totally agree about the weight gain, lots of people complain about that. It does make weight loss more than a challenge.

OMG!!! I forgot about the Weight Gain 4000 episode! Gotta love every bit Cartman does!

Mrsto is correct with regards to specialist physicians not aware of or understanding the special nutrition needs of a bariatric patient. Those physicians usually have their focus within the parameters of their specialty practice. That said, everyone is unique at what foods they tolerate, and certainly a priority needs to be getting proper nutrition. There are never ending debates regarding the role of carbohydrates for a Bandster diet. Certainly, whole grains are preferable to processed white grains. However, my surgeon has stressed to me the extreme importance of understanding that carbs are our enemy when it comes to reaching our weight loss goals. He has also stressed the importance of meeting the daily goal for Protein grams. I believe is is a misnomer to believe we can eat anything we want and expect to continue with weight loss. Eating carbs can lead to craving carbs, and couple that with fats from oils and you can have a prescription for weight gain. It would be best for you to consult with your nutritionist and/or bariatric surgeon to discuss what they feel is the best diet for you to follow. If there are serious medical issues which your cardiologist feels need to be addressed, perhaps the two physicians can discuss your situation.

Surgery Scheduled! Revision Sleeve to Bypass
Melixxa replied to shoregirl75's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Lately I have been thinking that this will never really be over for me. I have been reading about people who had bypass surgery many years ago and needed a "tune-up" or an over-stitch, which is apparently pretty simple and done on an out-patient basis. Personally, I would rather submit to some kind of surgery every ten years or so than further damage my body with out-of-control weight gain. At age 48, I am finally done beating myself up over this. I truly believe that if intelligence, my best effort and a powerful desire to do be healthy were enough, I would be at my goal weight without surgery right now. Best wishes to you all who are trying so hard to get this very heavy monkey off your back! -
Concerns with banded pregnancy
princesstuiaki replied to Lady Lexie's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
I was banded in Sept 2013 and got pregnant July 2014. I wasn't sure about getting any saline taken out. My cousin took all her fluid out for her 1st baby and gained 60lbs and so for the 2nd baby she kept all her fluid in and gained like 10lbs. I decided to keep all my fluid in (3cc in a 10cc band) and was doing well up until my 25th week or so. So now I am in my 29th week and have finally decided to take out at least 1cc. I go in tomorrow to do that. Main reason I am taking out is because I have not been able to eat well with all the tightness that I have been experiencing. I have gained about 3lbs since i have gotten pregnant. Usually by now that number would have been about 25, so I am happy for the minimal weight gain. I hope I don't gain too much after I get unfilled but am more worried about baby's weight gain than my own. I have 9 more weeks so I am sure it wont be too bad. I also want to get the unfill to make sure that I am staying hydrated and eating well for when I breastfeed. I will decide after baby comes when I will get more saline in to my belt. My doctor as has never been too concerned or worried about my minimal weight gain and that has been the main reason for not taking out any fluid, but For now, I will do what my body says is right -
my three children graduated from Commack High School. Wonderful school system. I know that the lap band has been the best thing in the world for both myself and my husband. After years of struggling with weight loss and weight gain etc. This has been a good journey. Some days are harder than others but we support each other and that certainly helps. good luck on your journey - contact me any time.

Starting To Panic...
motivatedlap replied to changemynametoskinny's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My first fill was 10ccs in an 11cc band. I felt NOTHING. It was tight for a couple of hours after the fill, but once that feeling went away, I felt the same as I did before the fill. I was also able to eat anything I wanted- Pasta, bread, rice, steak- all with no hint of sticking. I was freaked out because I was thinking- 'he can only get one more cc in this thing- what if I'm one of those people that the band just doesn't work for?'. Well, yesterday I went for fill #2. He put in 0.5ccs. I had to wait for 10 minutes in the office to make sure I wasn't uncomfortable. I felt a little like I had heartburn and felt burpy- there was a definite difference with that tiny amount. But I didn't really feel totally uncomfortable, so, I left and hoped on the subway. I got about 3 stops away and decided something was wrong. I had a sharp pain in the middle of my back and in my chest. I called the office and they said it was the sign of too much fill. They gave me the option of coming back and getting a little out or letting it settle for a couple of days. I decided to get some out, so I headed back and as soon as they took a little out, the pain went away. The moral of the story is don't give up! It just may take your band being almost full to get you the restriction you want. My doctor is pretty agreesive with the first fill and has me coming in every 2 weeks to check my progress. You're gonna get there, it just takes a little patience and a little more saline! (oh! the weight gain might just be muscle building from the exercise- use body measurements and how your clothes fit to help gauge your progress when the scale discourages you!) -
Profile Pictures Are Deceptive To Me.
mumof2boys replied to meyouus's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Great post. My profile picture is me...I was banded in 2007...lost 130 pounds, had a lower body lift and breast lift with augmentation in 2009 and this pic was from vacation in 2010...first time wearing a bikini. Now...in December 2010 I was diagnosed with breast cancer...kicked it's ass and then got pregnant in September 2011...delivered my third son on May 15, 2012 and now I'm fighting the pregnancy weight gain. I have 60 pounds to lose but I keep my profile pic the same to remind me that I did it once so I can do it again all of you are beautiful...never be embarrassed of your pictures! -
Miguel Thanx for your post. It was a great story. Great lessons you have learned from your experiences. I have heard that if you continue to work with the sleeve as a "tool" things will go well with your food eating, and weight. you have given me good info after the after life of the sleeve., over a year of the sleeve, thats always what i've been concerned with. Yes, they fixed my big stomach so i would lose weight, now i have to work on my brain to remember the reason i need to lose weight - and to not regain any weight back. Thank you for your honesty concerning your weight gain, that can be hard to admit, its important to be honest with yourself first. you said, basically it was your doing with eating certain extra things and too much food available at no price/ cost. Just kindof letting things go, not weighing yoursef. But you are back on that wagon, and are in the process of loosing that excess weight, good for you. we're human, and can gain, even with the help of the sleeve, but we must guard ourselves, so we don't gain and all that hard "torture" we initially went through was not in vane. As you can see, i'm still far from goal, but maybe i'm being naive, i cannot afford to gain my excess weight back in the future, but i know it will be hard. It sounds like the sleeve will continue to work for me, but i know its only a tool, and i have to work with it also. Tale care best wishes Kathy

I just joined this forum today and this is the exact reason. I am 8 years post op and had amazing results. Over 110lb weightloss. I knew all the warnings of gaining the weight back and not replacing food with alcohol etc. I truly thought all the warnings did not apply to me! I kept my post op weight for approx 5 years really without any effort. Ate pretty much what ever I wanted and still no weight gain! I WON- was my thought! Then 3 years ago my mom died and i fell apart. Eating didnt change but the daily wine drinking started. My weight slowly crept up over the next years and i am now 40+ pounds up from where I want to be. I really dont even know what to do. I have an extremely stressful life and really do not want to stop the wine completely so will cut back but I do not know what to even eat anymore! Has anyone else been here? Where did you start? Specifically-what did you do. I feel so ashamed of myself. I feel like i had such a gift of a second chance and have blown it ((.

I feel your pain! I too am a weight gain after 8 yrs of having gastric bypass... I was good for the first 4 years then the weight came back due to being depressed over losing a loved one. I was 298 at surgery 10 months later I weighed 156 ... A year later I was 135 I am now back to 230 and very depressed! I work out weight training 3 days a week for a hour and walk everyday 2miles and every night I use my elliptical and bike for a hour ... I have gone back to basics and no weight loss ???? went back to surgeon and he didn't seem to care!

Has your shoe size gone down? 100+ pounds gone
Charlie2282 replied to AchieveGoals's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yes. Before the weight gain I was a size 7. I went up to 8 1/2 - 9 . I’m 7 months post op and I’m in 7 1/2-8 now. It will go down. -
I just found in another post how this is normal. It was the 7 day post gastric sleeve post. I was so glad to read those responses I thought I was having complications. By the way my weight was up to then I did some yoga poses for gas pain relief and started passing Flatbush and having diarrhea and my weight start going down. I had been told the weight gain was the gas they pumped into us to do the surgery and we had to wait till the bod absorbed it. guess mine finally is. Also any surgery is treated by the body as an acute trauma so you have holding on of fluids and inflammation that adds to that weight gain. Give it 3 days and the normal surgery weight gain will go away.

Ideas for pre and post workout supplements
BigViffer replied to tigraq08's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Nah, I can't tell a difference. Pretty much every personality I trust agrees that monohydrate is the best way to go if you are going to do creatine. And it doesn't have to be the expensive brand either. Bodytech is what I was using and I think it was like $10. Supplementation is only really necessary when you cannot obtain the results naturally. I cannot get in the 150-200 grams of protein I need for my lifting regimen so I supplement protein. I do use BCAA's because I tend to take a while to recover. I tried creatine again late last year and cycled on/off on 30 day stints. The only difference I truly saw with the creatine was jitteriness and water weight gain. -
Donali, thanks for resurecting this post. Lisa, dont be afraid of the diet pills! It may be a temp. fix, but will help you with the stesses of a weight gain. Crystal, just letting you know Im thinking about you.

Hi all, this is my first post. I am also new here. I got my band in 2002. I am probably the smallest person ever banded, and my insurance covered every penny of it! I am 5' tall, and weighed 180 pounds at start. When first banded, I got down to a wonderful 138!! But.....all the sudden my band was TOO TIGHT! My doc says he wanted me to take a break, and took all the fill out. Since then, I have had nothing but a horrible roller coaster ride.Fill-unfill, weight loss, weight gain, fill-unfill, weight loss, weight gain. I have lost and gained the same 40 pounds over the last 5 years, and I am sooooo very sick of this!!! I currently have all my fill out due to horrible reflux, and even with all the fill out, I have the reflux. I currently feel like I have nasty week old food lodged in my throat. My doc says when I was banded back in 2002, they gave me a size 9 band, and he wants to put a bigger one in. He thinks this will solve my problems. Let me add, I had a scope ran 2 times, the first time I tested positive for H-Pylori, and now this 2nd time, he wants to run a test on me by having me swallow some radioactive eggs!!! He says the food isnt leaving my stomach properly!! I NEVER had problems with my stomach till the band. I read with one of the other posts stated that they couldnt eat anything unless it was smothered in grease or some kind of sauce to get it down. I sooooo can relate to that!! My theory is, "A FILL IS A FILL" what difference is the "SIZE" of a band going to make? I mean tightness is tightness, I have no fill at all, and feel like I need to burp constantly. I dont know what to do. I dont want to gain all my wight back either. But I sware, i feel like if I can ear normal again, I will do a better job in choosing my foods!! What do you guys think I should do?? Thanks, Tina

Oh that is probably what the weight gain is. I always gain a few lbs during my cycle.. That happened before I had surgery too. You get bloated. Make sure to always weigh yourself as soon as you wake up and after you use the bathroom -- that way you can have a more clear idea of your weight. Everyone's weight fluctuates during the day after eating & drinking -- it can be a 2-3 lbs difference. But if you weigh yourself when you wakeup; therefore - have less food/liquids in your system, then you'll get a more accurate, consistent idea of your weight.
