Band to Sleeve Failure and "Desperate"

I am having the band to sleeve revision on April 12. Fingers crossed. I'm using a very experienced surgeon who has done over 1000 revisions. He says the only way I will wake up without it is if I have an eroded band. Has anyone here had an eroded band and what was your symptoms? I have a lot of restriction and find myself hugging the toilet often especially when eating protein like meat and breads. I'm just stressed and hoping for one surgery. Can anyone help?

Do u drink pepsi and coke??

I have long term WLS friend with whom I was first banded (SAGB) in 2000. She developed complications a good 7yrs ago and she went the revision to Duodenal Switch route. She's required re-sleeving once in the last 5 years and says she could probably do with another resleeve, but is currently unable to fund it privately. She's a major diet coke drinker. We're all different. It's just doesn't take much to work out that with no carbonated drink addiction, my own band was not removed until February 2011. My pouch was intact, the port tubing was leaky. I was sleeved on the 18th Sept. and I don't expect to ever need resleeving. If I do, I can guarantee it won't be down to fizzy drinks since that's something which is absolutely under my own control. I can't make anyone elses' choices for them, nor would I want that kind of onerous responsibility. Neither can I remain silent when I've seen first hand resleeving required in a big diet coke drinker.

    Revision Gone Wrong

I had a revision to sleeve on the 16th. Luckily I used an amazing top Dallas bariatric physician. I too had the ng tube for a couple of days and just that alone slowed my recOvery in the hospital. Soon as that was out I was doing great. Today was my first follow up. Thank God everything looked okay. The only problem I am having is getting my protein and liquids in. I stay so incredibly full. They told me that Sunday I can start full liquids and that I will not feel as full by then that I had a major surgery and there is swelling. I forgot to mention they repaired a hiatal hernia and i think that has made things a little harder. No pain until today. My mother in law told me that her mother always told her that the 7th day after any surgery is the worse. I think I am a believer now haha. I wish you the best of luck and strength. It is wonderful to hear all the stories good or bad. Don't just jump in. I'm glad I ended up not.

    Lap band removed!

Congrats on your LB removal! I know when I had mine removed, I felt much better physically. I chose not to get revision right away and did pretty well for about 5 years. Then life threw me some curve balls and I gained my weight back. I spent 2 years trying to do it on my own before I realized that I needed help. I got revision to sleeve on 4/10 and am very happy with my decision.
  5. YLime please add @ Susie South to today's list. She is having an revision to a,Mini-Gastric today.
  6. Hi All! I'm new here...sorta. I gave an intro on another post here a few days ago. I mostly read and absorb all the posts. I'm a revision from lap band to RNY. My surgery date is June 4th. Thurday I had my last pre-op appointment. I found out I actually have to do a 2 week liquid diet. Booo! I had already geeked myself up for 1 week now I have to give myself another pep talk. Ha! Of course I have a graduation party 🎓 and a BBQ during those two weeks😔 I'm definitely ready to get this show on the road. June 2nd is my pre surgical appt. with the anesthesiologist. My Dr. recommends I take 4 weeks off. That will give me a chance to get my eating together and quite frankly I'm looking forward to the break from work😏 How long are some of you planning to be out off work?
  7. I was a bit reluctant to be the first to jump in here but I think that my hunger has diminished since my revision. I can go for quite a while and forget to eat, but, when I do I have to be very careful not to stuff myself with too much or eat it too quickly. My band worked very well for me until it slipped and I found that I recognised the fullness signs far earlier than I do now, but I do find that if I am strict with myself and only put a small portion on a small plate I am fine. Sometimes I do snack but that's habit and 'head hunger' more than anything, but I can't and don't really binge anymore. Lots of people here will have varied experiences x

    Confused?

I was band to sleeve revision and lost 160# post sleeve. First surgeon I went to pushed me to bypass saying my failure with band would be repeated with sleeve. I went to a different surgeon who made a strong case for t h e sleeve and 3 Years out I feel he was right in my case. Point is lots of varying opinions out there. Get a second opinion. My surgeon gave me copies of researc studies to help me learn about actual results over just individual success or failure stories on a forum. What I will say is I was anti bypass 3 years ago. I am so "pro" being slender these days I'd have no problem with bypass if thats what it takes.

    Lap band removed!

Congrats! I'm also pleased I had mine removed. I was revised to the bypass and I honestly could not be happier with my decision!
  10. I am looking to get a revision From the band to the sleeve. I got my band in 2009 and had went from 249 to 145. Had a pretty bad slip in 2016 and the ER doc didn’t know what to do so I had to guide him while take fluid out. He was a bit heavy handed and I think he damaged the port. They can’t refill the band because they think the port has disconnected from the “hose”. I’ve steadily gained and am back up to 220. My doc wants to remove my band and convert to the sleeve We are just now in the starting process and I’ve worried my insurance won’t cover it!! 😞
  11. I've been banded for 7 years and in the process of getting authorization for band to sleeve revision. It's up and down with the band. Too tight or too loose. Lose/gain/lose/gain and hit repeat! I've never had slippage but being too tight had many vomiting episodes and too loose I'm ravenous. My body at 5' 3 and with band I dropped at lowest to 164. But that was 30 miles per week of running/6 days per week of working out and throwing up or not being able to eat like I needed with band. Also the adjustment costs add up after a while
  12. I'm trying to get a revision. I got my band 3 years ago. I've lost all but 15 pounds so I'm barely overweight now. Do you think insurance will gripe about that?? My insurance has the easiest bariatric process ever so I'm hoping not. They do not require a six month diet or medical records: only a letter from the surgeon stating your current diagnoses and health problems. It only took them 4 days to approve my initial band.

    gastric bypass reversal

At the end of the day I think your post illustrates the best in a bariatric patient. The intense thought process considering all of the possible complications for getting, revising, or removal of the surgery. Going into this blind after watching a few "My 600# life" shows is about the worst thing one can do (And yes, I watch the show myself). It sounds to me that your mind is in the right place - considering what is going to improve your life the most, and yet doing lots of research on it. I applaud you for your research and I am very sorry for what seems like an awful number of years. I'm only 3 weeks out from my revision from a band to a RNY, but there were a number of reasons I went with a RNY over the sleeve. One of which is the possibility to do a reversal. Yes, it is not without complications, and no, it is not a complete reversal, but yes, it is still possible. With the sleeve? not so much. I would imagine that something as complex as a reversal would be quite variable between patients - what reason for each reversal is probably drastically different. So while I do think it is really good to see how outcomes were, I would postulate that your surgeon is probably going to be the best to trust. I was told that my surgeon was very "conservative" when it came to revisions. I was told he would go in and remove the band, and if things were really bad from scarring, he would not do the revision, and instead allow me to heal for 3 months before coming in and doing the revision. Maybe have a frank talk with your surgeon and make the same request. Maybe when he goes in, there is an obvious problem that can be fixed without actually reversing the procedure? Just throwing out another idea, if there is someone in your life that you trust your life with, consider filling out a medical power of attorney, and have a long conversation with them about your desires. Then, if doing the surgery the doctor would have a person to turn to and present both options...Your medical power of attorney, knowing your intents, could make the decision instead of a doctor who has spent an insignificant amount of time with you determining your interests. For my revision surgery, I did the above with a family member, so I'm not recommending something I didn't do myself. I will be praying for you and I wish you the best outcome, no matter what needs to be done to improve it!
  15. I had revision same time and have only lost 15 since surgery 15 months ago! So disappointed!

    Vsg to bypass this December

Is this revision due to GERD? I'm trying to make the decision between sleeve and bypass myself so any experience you had would be helpful. Thanks.
  17. April, its completely normal to be nervous and have your head play a few games with you. If you weren't, then you'd be loopy lol. My band has slipped and I might have to have a revision surgery, but even now, with as fickle as the band can sometimes be, I recognize that this is the best thing I've ever done, just for me. I've managed to lose around 90 lbs (although I have put a few back on) and I feel fantastic. As for your decision on whether or not to tell family/friends/coworkers, that's one only you can make. I told my immediate family beforehand, all the gory details. The rest of the family knew I was having surgery, but didn't know what for - figured it was girlie stuff. After I started losing, when they asked, I'd tell them. I work for my husband's company, so the boss knew lol .. but I told everyone else too. There's only one other girl in our office - the rest are 20something boys (all hotties too lol). They've all been extremely supportive. For me, it was easier telling people upfront, rather than having to make excuses as to why I couldn't join in on the massive feed they were having for lunch or whatever. Best of luck to you in your upcoming surgery. You'll do fine

    November sleevers in Mexico?

Hi Everyone. I finally feel decent enough to give you all an update. Here's what went down: I got to the hospital at 12:00 and did pre-op testing. They told me I would meet with the internist and then the anesthesiologist and doctor. So I met the internist around 2:00. Then waited. And waited. Finally the patient advocate came in around 5:00 and said it would be another hour. Ok. I waited some more. At 6:15 I had a total nervous breakdown (like crying uncontrollably) because I hadn't had any fluids, I was starving and I didn't want to be the last surgery of the day. I finally sucked it up but when they finally came to get me 6:30 it started all over again. Then I met with the anesthesiologist and she was very sweet and reassuring. Then she pumped me full of Xanax and some other cocktail that made me feel a tad drunk. Dr. Lopez came out to meet me and I told him I was so upset because I didn't think I would be last and he said he always does the more difficult surgeries first. Everyone but me was a revision of some sort and I was last because I was smaller, my blood pressure was perfect and all my lab work was perfect. That made me feel better. I also was gauging if the doctor looked at all exhausted and he didn't so at that point I was comfortable with proceeding. I remember waking up in immense pain and dry heaving. This is not new. It happens every time I have surgery. Thankfully I had nothing to throw up. I had to be monitored longer than usual but eventually I made it back to my room around 10:00. I kept feeling terrible pain so they kept pumping me full of medications. Finally I was able to sleep. This morning I feel MUCH better. I only have minimal gas pain and it is coming out in the form of hiccups and little burps. Sometimes the burps feel like they are trapped in my chest and its a little scary but then it passes. The only real pain is where the drain is. I'll be soooo happy to get it out tomorrow. I took a shower a little while ago and soon I will be going to do my leak test. I'll try to keep you all updated as much as possible! Feel free to ask any questions. :-)

    Sleeve revision to bypass

I had my revision on Thurs 4/18. Besides gas pains the first two days, I’m doing well. I am a little worried that I don’t feel the restriction I did with the sleeve at the beginning. I can drink as much as I want without any pain.

    Acid Reflux

I got lap band in 2013, and had it removed in 2021 due to developing horrible reflux. I'm in the process of revising to gastric bypass now. Lap band and sleeve are both high pressure systems that are known to cause reflux for a good amount of people. Unfortunately I wasn't aware of this when I was banded. Are you taking any PPI's to reduce stomach acid? That's fairly common after these procedures. I'd make contact with your surgeon to make them aware of what's happening.

    Flip a Coin?

I was 55 when I was banded in Mexico and lived through it. I have 3-D friends who were banded in the US, and France and Germany and friends who had RnY in the US and had the DS in the US...years ago...and still haven't had a sleep study done. While a sleep study is a good idea for any morbidly obese person, I'd vote for manometry as a pre-op test for someone considering adjustable gastric banding...especially an older person. While none of my over-50 friends died from being banded without a sleep study, a few are suffering from the late complication of dysmotility, which seems to be more common in older patients. They are, several years out, having to have revision surgeries and THAT is also more dangerous. The danger is not in the geography...
  25. i think many people on here will tell you any revision surgery results in a much slower rate of weight loss than the first time around.
