    estimated weight loss

I only mentioned the support part because it happens. If you read this thread, you'll get an understanding what, we the weight loss surgery patients often deal with from those closest to us. And also this calculator for weight loss surgery can give you a guesstimate of what she might weigh when her body settles on its new weight. https://www.obesitycoverage.com/weight-loss-surgeries/gastric-bypass/how-much-can-i-expect-to-lose I plugged in her info and it says at 18 months out, 20% of sleeve patients weigh 185. Check it out for yourself. Just make sure you're looking at the correct surgery. It gives options for Band, Bypass and Sleeve.

    estimated weight loss

At 5'7 and 209 still in the overweight range and has still 49lb before reaching the top of the BMI for the height of 5'7. 130lb would give a BMI of approx 20 which is at the lower end of the healthy weight range for the height. BMI isn't the be all end all of healthy weight as it doesn't account for body composition, but it is a fair indication for most of us as we are not athletes or body builders. A lot of people get to a fairly low weight following WLS, however, they typically gain some weight once they've reached their lowest weight. Best weight for your wife is the one agreed between her and her doctor/surgeon or herself only, and at the end of the day, weight isn't only the indicator of good health. Body fat percentage, blood sugars, fitness, cholesterol etc are possibly better indicators.

    Gastric sleeved on Sunday 3/13/2022

Ask your doctor if those medications can maybe be crushed and added to a drink. (Not all medication can be crushed so make sure to ask first before doing it) Also make sure you fill out your sidebar information so we have a little more info on you (surgery type, date, weight, ect...) it helps a ton when answering questions.
  4. liveaboard15

    Good morning

Welcome. Make sure you fill out your side bar with your details so we better understand you. What surgery did you get? What weight did you start out at and how did you do? Sidebar can be filled out in your profile section.

    Where’s the weight loss??

You answered your own question. I seem to be posting this on every thread lately but ...you don't (I hope) want to lose weight, you want to lose fat (seems people are really scared of that word. It's fat loss surgery. Weight loss surgery is leg amputation.) If you ate 600 calories in a day, you lost fat that day, plain and simple. And you didn't lose 10lb of fat that first week. You didn't lose close to that. Your fat loss has almost certainly been constant or near constant each day so far. Others have explained why but the first week you probably lost 5lb or more of inflammation weight. Unpopular advice: stop weighing yourself. Eat protein, drink water. Walk gently and often. Smile.

    Any Regrets?

Post weight loss surgery GERD is real. GERD so bad that PPI's can't touch it. PPI's have very bad side effects. I got a kidney stone from overuse of PPI's for post weight loss surgery GERD. GERD is causing wls patients to get Barrett's esophagus and Barrett's esophagus can become esophageal cancer. These are serious effects of weight loss surgery that should be taken seriously and all potential weight loss surgery patients should be aware that it's not just heartburn or reflux and depending on which surgery you choose, it could happen to you... It's an individual decision that one must weigh their own personal comorbidities/issues for deciding on wls against the benefits and risks of wls. And there's also other weight loss surgeries than the sleeve. Each surgery has it's own benefits and risks. It's best to get all of the information and read about personal outcomes to help decide which surgery is best for you or if surgery is even an option. But discounting real side effects/complications of wls is just foolish and chidlish.

    estimated weight loss

It's difficult to answer this question because you told us she now weighs 209 pounds, but you failed to give her height. Is she 5'10, 5'? Which surgery did she have? Why are you scared she's going to lose too much weight? Maybe you're just not used to her being at a "healthy weight." I hope you're supporting her weight loss journey to a new, healthier weight and not badgering her about "losing too much weight" There's nothing worse than someone close to you not being supportive when you're trying to become healthier. Any Regrets?

I don't think one study is enough to change someone's opinion or make a certain outcome fact. There are studies done every day on various things coming up with totally different conclusions. The outcome is often, whether on purpose or not, supporting the opinion the study team goes in with and they prove their point. in real life, in the support groups I attend and the research I do online and through my Doctor, I have not seen what this is saying and if so, I see very few people who would not accept a trade off. I am one of those people who were obese, could run, jump, swim etc, etc but how long can someone at a 43-45% bmi continue to live like that? Along with the weight comes diabetes type II, High blood pressure, high cholesterol etc. These are all warning signs for heart disease. Given the choice of GERD or dying 15 years early due to heart disease, stroke, diabetes complications etc I would choose the GERD. The quality of life i have right now at 100 pounds less is incredible. The way I feel about myself and the confidence I have now is incredible. The feeling that I am not being looked at and scorned or fat shamed is incredible. The ability to run and play with my 5 y/o granddaughter and not struggle during and after is incredible. Don't let yourself be influenced by one study or one person. There are millions of positive testimonials out there, thousands of doctors and dieticians out there. The benefits far outweigh the few issues that SOME people may be having.

    estimated weight loss

She will level out. Her body will know when to stop, she can also adjust her calories to maintain or even gain a few lbs if needed. If it becomes a real concern she can consult her nutritionist to help her get to and maintain a healthy weight.

    Nerves!

This is the entire point of getting weight loss surgery. To help you get healthier. These are your baseline labs. At one of your upcoming post op visit, possibly your one year post op appointment, your doctor will reorder these tests and show you how much improvement you have made after losing weight. It's not about denying you for weight loss surgery.

    Where’s the weight loss??

At this point, the number on the scale is meaningless. Your body is still adjusting to the major change of the surgery. Right now, you need to focus on getting your protein and water, and recovering from the surgery. If you stick to your plan, the weight will come off. It won’t happen instantly (remember, you didn’t gain the weight overnight, so you won’t lose it overnight), but you’re doing great so far, so keep it up and keep the faith!

    RNY Revison 10.2.22

Congrats on the revision and weight loss!
  13. Hi all, my wife had a weightloss surgery at december 1st 2021, she was 308 lbs, now she has already hit 209 lbs, im scared shes gona lose too much weight. what can we further expect? how much will she lose?
  14. My original RNY was done in December 2000, and it was very successful, I lost 12 stone and life was good! I started to regain around 10 years post op nothing too drastic, but I had awful GERD and I was still vomiting sometimes which I thought was odd. Anyway fast forward to 2022 and I went to see about a revision, turns out after a gastroscopy I had a rare complication called candy cane syndrome and a fistula from the pouch to the old stomach! I went in for what should have been keyhole to end up having a full open operation as the surgeon could not find where one of the limbs from my previous surgery was connected to and my intestines were twisted (apparently called an intestinal hernias). Great it was not! I am now almost 5 weeks tomorrow post operation and getting back on my feet. I have been surprised at the weight loss 24lbs currently, which I guess will slow down as I only have 70lbs to loose now. I am also really shocked at the level of aftercare you get now! I'm at the soft food stage, and yesterday I found out I cannot eat fish pie yet! Two hours of pain then eventually throwing it all up. I had truly forgotten how horrible that is, my chest hurt and my throat was still sore this morning. Hoping it is not too soon after the surgery to be ill after eating, but pleased it's done and I can move on with it now.

    No weight loss

I know it sounds like expensive advice, but you could (should) try and find a registered dietician who can support you and help you through this. If your surgery was a while ago you should be able to exercise freely by now….walking is great as it’s low impact on the joints, it’s hard to over do it. Walking, drinking water (measure how much and try and get to at least 1.5 litres a day), eat only 3 times a day, log your food using an app, my dietician recommended baritastic, weigh your food (boring but worth it) read the labels and cut right down on the carbs (that is starches and sugars), go hard on the low carb proteins, don’t eat too much fatty food….try to aim for ??1000/ 12000 calories a day and the weight will drop off in no time.

    How much is too much

Generally most of us are advised to consume 60 - 80g a day but as the others have suggested, it is best to ask your dietician &/or surgeon for a goal appropriate for you & your needs. Excess protein is stored as fat, not helpful while you’re trying to lose weight, can cause kidney issues like kidney stones & can raise your cholesterol (which already often temporarily increases as you lose weight anyway). There is also information about that says your body can’t absorb more than around 25g of protein at a time. So you could infer if you consume more than 25g at a meal the excess would be stored as fat.

    TOURQUE REVISION ?

What is a tourque revision? I tried googling that and only car engine stuff came up. Welcome to the group btw. Make sure you fill out your sidebar with your information, It comes in handy when answering questions. It can be done by editing your profile. and 17 years ago you had gastric Bypass?? WOW how did that go? What was your starting weight and what is your current weight?
  18. Hello. 48 year old married female mother of three here. I've been reading these boards for a while as I make this life changing decision. I have my first pre-op appointment tomorrow with my bariatric surgeon and can't wait. I've been spending the past several weeks working on my list of questions and trying to change my habits. Last fall I put a sticky note on my monitor with a symbol representing the need for change, and that if I did not succeed on my own I would start researching other options. Long story short, the day for other options is here as I weigh about 20 pounds more than I did last year. Like many here I know I can lose the weight. However, the day always comes when I can't white knuckle it anymore and then comes the regain and then some. Dieting interspersed with hectic lifestyle choices has resulted in my weighing 100 pounds more than I did 2 decades ago. I consider myself lucky that I have relatively few health problems, however I also feel my body is a ticking time bomb. I have fears, but for me I have decided that the potential benefits far outweigh the risks. I can't wait to work in the garden without my joints hurting, go ice skating again and have the ENERGY I once did for traveling, physical activity, just cleaning up the house. I can't wait to travel without being so self conscious. I once got off of a plane in Ireland (as a size 18) and a woman came up to me and said "are you American?" I have no idea why she asked, but she marked my response down on her clipboard and started looking for other people to talk to. It was nothing to do with customs/etc. I was horrified and walked away quickly, jumping to the conclusion she was looking for overweight people to poll for some sort of research project. Weird I know, but I've thought about it ever since (she didn't bother to ask my naturally skinny husband of course). Now I hope to return to Ireland one day and actually do those things I chickened out of like climbing Skellig Michael (all 618 steps). One of my biggest fears oddly enough is the inevitable well meaning comments/complements. I really struggle to tolerate unsolicited comments about weight loss and find them to be a terrible invasion of privacy. What's even worse are those comments along the lines of "you've lost enough, don't lose too much" when you're still 50 pounds overweight (which I've experienced SO many times). I'm already working on my polite replies to this which will hopefully put an end to that subject while also educating the person about healthy weight AND boundaries :). I am a very private person, with posts such as this being a first for me. I've really enjoyed reading all your posts and feel well prepared for my appointment tomorrow. Thank you.

    Any Regrets?

What’s one thing you wish someone had told you before you had surgery? -ultimately it doesn't matter your weight or bmi so long as you qualify. It mostly matters where your heads at, how important weight loss is to you, and how ready you feel for the drastic measure. -I also wish my team made it clear that the first few weeks are depressing, no sugar coating it. You feel bad and unhappy. -I also wish my team was clear about how long it takes to feel like yourself again. I'm 1 month post op and am just starting to feel a little bit normal but the exhaustion and fatigue is real . I feel the most out of shape in my life. Pre op I was training for a half marathon able to take 2 hours to walk 11 miles. Now i feel winded and dizzy after 1 mile. I've lost 47 lbs total now and don't feel physically good most days. I don't like when people ask me how happy I must be. I won't be truly happy until I feel healthy but I know it happens. I just wish my team was more honest about how difficult the first couple of months can be post op. But ultimately, I decided to do it because I'm losing my 20s to obesity. I'm sick of battling against myself to do the right thing. I was tired of always feeling hungry. My knees are messed up from my weight and I lost and gained in huge amounts for years. So yes, to me, it's worth it but IT'S NOT EASY. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Where’s the weight loss??

Thank you for this perspective! It’s so helpful. I think the tool part is exactly the same for me. I need this in conjunction with better eating. I used to try WW over and over and could only lose about 15 lbs over months and months. I only lost weight when I used Phentermine. I am fine with losing slowly l, but seeing just -1.5 lb in a week made me have buyer’s remorse at first. I need to lose about 80-90 lbs total. Thanks for helping me off the ledge 🙃

    Constipation - Warning TMI

I know the struggle... trust me. I almost went to the ER because the amount of blood but turns out it was from the hard stool. So long as the blood is fresh - it's likely just from the straining/hardness. This is def TMI but I reached the point of slapping on a pair of gloves and taking it out myself. Sadly this intense constipation is common after weight loss surgery. You'll need to find a supplement and or medication routine that helps you pass things better. Try asking your care team for advice. I have in my arsenal right now senna (smooth move) tea, milk of magnesia, psyllium husk and prune juice. I also try to each some veggies with my protein, whatever I can stand. Make sure to drink a lot of water and try switching up your protein shakes. My ensures were causing a lot of the constipation initially. Good luck. I really know the pain. It will get better eventually. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    July 2021 Surgery People!

Hey July 2021 Surgery People! It has been a while since we've had any updates on everyone's progress. I reached a BIG milestone today & am excited to say that I am 100 pounds down. Overall, things have been going well. Have I been perfect? No. Could I possibly have lost faster? Probably. Some of the things that I have struggled with are getting enough protein & water/fluids in. I also recently noticed some grazing was returning when I would prepare my kids' snack. I also feel that I need to exercise more. When I started I was so strict about following the plan as best I could. I know I don't need to be perfectly following everything to a T, but know I don't want to let old habits return or lose out on this weight loss window. I started trying to focus & proteins & fluids again. I want to start habit tracking again to try my best to follow my food & activity plans. I also want to increase fruits & veggies. (I recently read 2 of Dr. Matthew Weiner's books and realize I need to try to incorporate those foods more) Some of my "go-to" foods and drinks currently are: yogurt (light & fit greek), nuts, cheese, fruits, craisins/raisins, salads, chicken, shrimp, crackers, unsweetened iced tea, hot coffee, & iced coffee. I sometimes add unflavored protein powder to yogurt & coffee. I still have at least 20 pounds that I want to lose. I am also realizing that maintaining the loss will probably be hard work, as that is obviously something that I was never able to do before. When I get to where I want to be, I know this is when I will need the most support. So, I'm just wondering how everyone else is doing? How much have you lost? Are you at goal? How much to go? What are you struggling with? What works for you? What are your go-to's? Favorite exercises or activities? Products, advice or tips to share? Fears? Wishing everyone well, hoping you are feeling good, & are at or closer to where you want to be.😁🍀👍

    Where’s the weight loss??

P.S. wanted to add that after the first month, this IS a lot like Weight Watchers. Unless you're the size of someone on "My 600 lb Life", you're not going to drop 30 or 40 lbs a month (or whatever). People typically have a big drop the first month, because that's mostly water weight - and then you'll settle in to about 10 lbs a month, give or take, for several months - and then, as you approach your goal, it will really slow down. the difference this time is that you have a tool that makes your efforts pay off. It actually works as long as you stick to your plan. The most I could ever lose before surgery was about 50 lbs - and then it would gradually come back on. No way I could have EVER lost the 200+ lbs I did - and keep most of it off (I did have a 20 lb rebound after hitting bottom - which is very common). The surgery was the only thing that made that possible.

    ONEderland!!!

New milestone!!!😁 Officially 100 pounds down!! It feels so good to have reached this weight, a year ago I couldn't have even imagined being here again. I still want to lose at least 20 pounds, and see that the weight loss is definitely slowing down now that I am further out from surgery & getting closer to my goal. It is time for me to make sure I am staying on track with the positive changes and habits & not losing focus. Wishing everyone well on reaching their own milestones & goals. 🤗🍀

    Any Regrets?

Many people have GERD or will develop GERD with or without the surgery. People that are obese have a good chance of developing GERD as they age. My question would be would you rather be obese or of healthy weight and have GERD? I would rather be healthy weight and have a treatable GERD problem over obesity and all the many health issues that come with that that I no longer have like Type 2 diabetes, High blood pressure, high cholesterol etc
