  1. Life After the Band: only difference for me is no carbonation. Don't care about soda... miss beer. Other then that, I am amazed how it is the same you just eat less. Adjusting to foods: I have not had a problem with any foods at all. I have eaten anything I want. Don't know the percentage of slippage. If I had a chance to change it: First thought is no. My only other thought is I might have looked a little more into the sleeve just because it may be faster. Plus my insurance did not cover it. But what is faster for me is not faster for others and visa versa... There are plenty of people on this site that have lost weight just as fast as peope with all the other wls... so its is different for all. Now that I am on this journey, I am so excited to get it over with and get on with my life. This is the first time in my overweight life that I know I will finally see the other side. So that just makes me want to get this done... I also have my husband and my son that have done this with me all within a two week time span (june 09) and my husband says the same thing and my son only being 19 would not have done anything else but the band and I understand that. It is still diet and exercise that makes this work. It's not magic. No matter what comes out on the market for weight loss it always comes down to eating right and exercising, bottom line. The band is just a tool that helps stop hunger and that is half the battle. The other half is in your head and why you are overweight anyway. Both have to be fixed or it won't work or it will just come back again someday. Also until you get your band to the right fill amount, it takes just as much will power as regular dieting. I don't think we are told that enough pre banding, but it's reality. Or it is for the three post surgery people that live in my house. So with that said... Go for it and don't look back. You do what the dr's tell you and it will work. Start exercising immediatly... I waited for about 6 weeks just out of laziness and that is six weeks closer to my goal. I started exercising at the YMCA 14 days ago and I have not missed a work out. I give my self two days off each week. I hate exercise but for some reason this time, I am getting addicted to it. I think it's because AGAIN I know I will complete my mission. Good Luck to you...
  2. My appoinment with my surgeon, after I had been to the informational seminar, was 11/10. My surgery was on 12/21. It helped that I was Self-Pay, as I didn't have to jump through any hoops before getting the band.
  3. The hosts on What Not to Wear say that women will often need to have their pants altered and to make friends with a good tailor. Do they make something like Right Fit in smaller sizes? You’d think that clothing manufacturers would get a clue! I have the same problem with my waist being disproportionately smaller than my hips. My arms are a trouble spot for me too! They are much smaller now but I have a disgusting amount of skin hanging from them. The skin is wrinkly and gross. I’m definitely going to need surgery on them and other places. At least I can fit them into sleeves now! I haven’t tried GAP yet. I looked online and saw they had size 20 in some things. I can find things at Old Navy in the stores. I had to buy from them online to get my size in the past. I'm too cheap to shop at Lane Bryant anymore. Even their clearance items are more than I want to pay for what amounts to disposable clothes. I have a limit of $30 for anything, including suits. Most of the time I’m lucky enough to find shirts for $10-$15 and pants for around $20. I found a couple of suits last weekend that were leftover from last winter on the clearance rack at Filene’s Basement for $20 each. Even Filene’s original price was over $100. The original MSRP tags said $250, so I was very pleased. I bought them a size too small hoping that they will fit right once the weather is cooler. I have a blouse from Ross that gets more compliments than any item of clothing I’ve ever owned. It cost $3! I do find excellent deals but it seems to take up all of my free time.
  4. I'm going to politely disagree with the responses you've received here so far. Since even the initial consultation is a bariatric service, they want to verify that your insurance will cover it prior to scheduling. The initial consultation is a billable service. You either have coverage or you don't. The facility wants to know if insurance will pay or if you will be paying on your own. It is possible after the initial consult, that you choose not to proceed. However, they still want to know that you have coverage for that visit. Example: my insurance policy through my employer specifically excluded any coverage for weight management and/or bariatric services until 2020. In 2019, I was aware that coverage would be added in 2020. I tried to schedule initial consultations and dietician visits to get started but was unable to unless I wanted to pay for them out of pocket. Since I did not want to self-pay. I had to wait until benefits began in 2020. Even having a conversation with my primary care doctor regarding any potential weight management had to be done as a discussion during an appointment coded as something else. Otherwise, I would have had to pay for it. I hope this makes sense.

Hey I’m a Houstonian too... although my dad would call me a traitor since I grew up in San Antonio. My surgery is 3/19/18with TLC Surgery with Dr. Sherman Yu.

    I need some splaining....

Yes it does sound like that first bite thing. I take my first bite and wait 10 or 15 minutes. This is hard for me but I have been working on it. I try not to wait until I am so hungry either. I cut things up really small and chew the heck out of it. I have learn to enjoy the flavor of food more and not the full feeling. Good luck and chew, chew, chew and chew some more. HA Ha

    Diabetes

Dyros - I have not had many lows. I worked with my entire care team and specifically my endocrinologist. We had a plan in place and I'm blessed it worked! I went to 50% basal and 1:10 bolus on my pump. Of the two low's I've had, I have been using "glucose shots" by Dex.....liquid and easy to get down. I hope you are doing well...take it easy and try not to get frustrated. I had my surgery 12/1/14 and I still have days where I have an ache/pain or feel nauseous....one day at a time
  9. Mine took about 10-12 weeks. I had to do the nutritional, psych eval and bloodwork. My insurance originally denied me but because there were no bariatric surgeons in my plan they reapplied for me and I was accepted. Good luck.

    fear of vomiting

I was banded on Aug 25, 2010. I have not yet vomitted once. I have gotten stuck about 4 times, but remained calm. When and if you do get stuck the first thing you need to do is NOT panic. I have learned a lot from this forum and two of those things were that if you get stuck, DONT DRINK ANYTHING to try and get it to go down (this will just make you want to throw up worse)stand up and flap your left arm like a chicken (yes I did just say that) it has worked every time I have gotten stuck. The other one I heard was to keep papaya enzyme chewables at your reach at all times (purse, desk, home, car). It is a digestive aid. I got stuck last night and I just stood up kind of walking around my house breathing, flapping, took two enzyme pills and after about 10 min it all went down. The reason I got stuck was because I was eating too fast, didnt cut it small enough and did not chew long enough. You do need to pay attention. I refuse to throw up and I have not done it once yet. Not everyone throws up and it is not going to make you a belemic if you get this surgery. You just need to pay attention to what and how you are eating and you wont get stuck and you wont throw up!

    back to work Monday

I hear you. I was banded on 3/10 and I went back to work last thursday. My first day back was one of the longest days I have had there. I was just tired and wanted to go home. I recommend taking it slow. My boss know about the band and I worked out a little arrangement with her. I broke my lunch up into two 15 minute breaks and a 30 minute lunch. If your boss knows about your surgery ask him/her about taking an extra break here and there or seeing if they can manipulate your lunch time too. Keeping up on fluids is important so hopefully your boss will be on board.

    Is this normal?

UGH... and I had the EXACT symptoms you do. Mine felt like an overall tightness/soreness /extreme discomfort - like when I took a deep breath, or was sitting/laying in a certain position, bending over, etc. I basically felt it all the time. I discussed with my doctor and he said it's most likely a combination of trapped gas and constipation. I was banded on 11/10 and had a hell of a time (excuse my language) going #2. I had HORRIBLE constipation. I've since taken colace and have had a MUCH better time. High Protein diets are synonymous with constipation, so it’s very important that we drink as much Water as possible. I was 3 weeks post-op yesterday and can still feel it, just not as bad. It’s DEFINITELY gotten SO much better though. I too was very concerned for a while. My port is the lower right side of my stomach closer to my belly button as opposed to under your left rib cage. So for me, this particular ailment wasn’t port pain (though I DO have some port pain, just not there lol). Also, I know that some sleeve/bypass patients have experienced the same pain/discomfort… so I don’t think this symptom is exclusive to banded patients. My doctor also suggested that it may be something called "splenic flexure syndrome." Essentially, gas gets trapped in the bend of the colon near the spleen (the splenic flexure). It’s more or less just gas pains that will eventually dissipate. This may sound crazy… but I found that flapping my arms, like I’m doing the chicken dance helped. I know it sounds weird, but it actually helped alleviate my discomfort/pain But overall, if the discomfort if not manageable and is not getting better at all, I would certainly call your doctor. There’s no reason for you to be uncomfortable and in pain.
  14. Last week was my 8 month bandiversary. Why did I wait so long to have the lap-band? It has really been the best thing I have ever done for myself. My lap-band is my built in will power. Always with me. Always reminding me to make good food choices. I wanted to share some of my positive outcomes so far... Justin Bieber weighs 110lbs. I have lost Justin Bieber!!! I am working out regularly. I can make it through an hour kick ass spin class with out taking a break and I love it! I have more energy to play with my son. (I went down the slide at the park and went on the swings!) My whole family is eating healthier. I have learned what a real portion looks like. I can fit in any restaurant booth. If I eat slowly, pay attention to what I’m doing and chew my food really well, then I can still eat my favorite foods. (The funny thing is those foods aren’t as important to me anymore.) I went from a tight size 26/28/3X/4X to a loose 18/20/1x. I do not wear elastic waist pants anymore. My shoe size went from an 11W to a 10. I am putting myself first for the first time ever and I am able to take BETTER care of the people and things I care about. I'm saving money - eating less, eating out less, and less money on fad diets etc. I'm not missing out on anything. I try new things all the time. I am so happy! I truly wish that everyone can experience all the wonderful things that I have in the last 8 months. Who knew that in less than a year my life could be so different? I can't wait to see what happens next! Have a great day!
  15. My surgeon its an automatic. If you have a gallbladder they will remove it. Unfortunately I lost mine 10 years before in an open gallbladder removal. Left me a nice 5 inch scar right across my belly and 4 days in the hospital. Now having an abdominalplasty and that lovely scar puts me at further risk for healing. Still having the abdominalplasty........cannot live with this huge apron of skin and residual fat.
  16. Sleeved on 6/30 and EXTREME fatigue the last 2 days. I take all my B12 and B1 Vitamins but I have a hard time getting in my Multivitamins. I get between 50-60 Proteins daily and less than 10 carbs. Calories are around 600-700. I do have a hard time getting in more than 32 oz of Water though. The eating and then waiting to drink is part of the problem for me on getting enough water in. Has this happened to anyone else? My husband is getting concerned because I literally have no energy to do anything...

    Feeling discouraged...

It does get better. I literally set my phone for 10 minutes. Every 10 I sip a shot glass of water or protein drink. I do this for 10 hours a day. It seemed kind of tedious at first but I am feeling better. SF Popsicles , SF Jello and broth have been good options too. I am still more fatigued than I expected 1week out. I gonna take a walk outside today. My doc gave me Lorazapam for anxiety/pain management. I have taken a few times when I get frustrated/anxious. I haven't needed anything stronger for pain.Hope you feel better soon!

    Biotin for hair loss...

It will take a while for you to really see a difference from the Biotin. I think it was 6 months before I could tell, my hairbrush had 50% less hair in it! I also, use Nioxin cleanser, conditioner and scalp treatment and that I made a difference in a month! I don't have a band yet, my surgery date is 10/21, but I experienced hair loss after the birth of my fourth child!
  20. I always drank 12 oz cans-10-12 a day. Through reading this forum i learned that it might be a requirement to give it up with my surgeon. A month before my 1st appt with the surgeon I decided to quit. The way I did it was to limit myself to 1 first thing in the am and 1 in the evening. I did that a few days then I had 1/2 can each time. Then I changed the evening soda for Kool-Aid made with stevia. After a few days to acquire the taste for Kool-Aid I dropped the am soda and traded it for the Kool-Aid. I did fine this way. I had no headache and have no cravings for it. I didn't mean to hijack the thread. I just wanted to throw that out there for anyone coming in later and facing it. It was a serious worry for me and I was very happy to have found an easy way to achieve it. I quit smoking at the same time doing it the same way, alternating E-cigs for the real thing and weaning myself off.

    Hello from Pa!

I'm in Central NY not too far from the PA line. My doc takes 4-6 mo. to get us through the process, and I'm so glad he did - so I had time to really wrap my brain around the change. One of the folks in our support group had a doc 10 years ago that did a visit, and surgery the week following, without a lot of follow-up. Definitely do all your homework so you know what to expect, and the nutritional path to follow for the best results.
  22. I'm going 10/22/13, by myself, but feel confident. I also have been working with Cristy. Did you get a date or still contemplating?
  23. I had my 1st visit with the surgeon on Aug 4th, I have to do a 6 month diet & exercise class, Aug 8th i attended a diet & exercise seminar, Aug 9th I drop the form off to my dr office so she can sign off saying it's ok to participate in the Well Wellness Program, Aug 10-Aug 22 nothing but excuses after excuses, so on the 22nd I go to the office and ask have they faxed the paperwork back to the Wellness Center yet, O she has a note on your chart to discuss at office visit, wow thanks for letting me know so I try to scheldule a office can't one until Sept 19th!!!!! So I've decided if I really want to get the ball rolling I needed to change drs. So I made an appt with another dr who my mother goes to, and I will be seeing him on Monday!!! I plan on going on a cruise in May I would like to be banded by then. So with that being said do you think I'm doing the right thang by changing drs????

    Backpacking/Hiking

@@Christopher James - I don't know where you have been, but as for me, I've been to heights I've never imagined me doing (well maybe when I was 19 in the Army). The nice thing about hiking is you can nibble on nuts and things which would normally be a problem, but do really well when you are moving under a load constantly. Be very aware of your Water intake and enjoy the air, the views and new found mobility.
