  1. I do not drink hard liquor or beer. Just no preference for it. But pre-VSG, I was very much a wine drinker. Not cheap rotgut stuff (no offense to anyone who enjoys $2 moscato). I would have a few glasses each night without fail. I was very concerned about what life would look like on the other side of my surgery as far as my enjoyment of fine wines. A little over a week post-op, and shockingly, I have no craving for wine. No desire. It doesn’t turn me off, but I’m not missing it. Something I never would have believed could be true pre-surgery. I asked my doctor about wine specifically at my one-week appointment, and he said it would be fine to have it in very small amounts, just being mindful of the empty calories aspect, and that smaller amounts of wine would hit me much harder now. Unlike RNY patients, VSG patients don’t experience many of the same issues with alcohol damaging their digestive systems post-surgery and can often drink in small amounts after their surgery with minimal issues. A few days ago, we had a small (socially distant!) outdoor gathering with friends. None of them know about my surgery. I knew it would raise all sorts of concerns if I didn’t drink at all, because everyone knows I love my wine, so I brought a cup with about 4oz of wine in it, which I took teensy tiny sips of over the course of a few hours. It was fine but I didn’t want any more.
  2. Alcohol is not part of your diet
  3. No, they advised against solid food for four weeks, but sometimes I play fast and loose. I have followed up with dietitian, but I knew as much about diet and nutrition as she does before the surgery. My obesity was simply from alcohol consumption, poor choices, and putting a sedentary career first. I have long since known what had to be done to accomplish weight loss. There was 8 years or so period before I was married where I was akin to an amateur body builder, although I never competed or cared to. I hear you about the old eating habits. I don't plan to keep it up, but I was just being honest about why I have only lost a pound or so in the last three days.
  4. Wow, did your doctor give you approval for solid foods 3 -4 days after surgery??? I (and I believe most of us) was instructed to gradually increase intake from liquids to puree foods, to soft, and finally solids 8 weeks after surgery, avoiding specific high carb and high fat/sugar foods. Also, no carbonated beverages (not b/c of the lack of tolerance so much as the detrimental affect of bloating the stomach, and stretching it out). Also, no alcohol for at least a year for me. Are you following up with your dietician to make sure you are eating foods that will help you lose the weight you want? After all, the surgery is just a tool, but will not work if you go back to old eating habits. My calorie intake is limited to about 800 calories a day, and I am struggling with weight loss even then.
  5. My biggest issue that I am having, is my weight loss is kind of stalling because I have been eating crappy food like taquitos, enchiladas, pizza, etc. Granted only a slice or small portion, but I got a lot of mental hunger after being on a liquid diet for two weeks that I broke down and satiated. I also love to drink beer, and have been drinking some non-alcoholic beer which is about half the calories of light beer, but obviously still empty calories. Down 27 lbs 23 days from start of diet, 16 days from surgery. Right now I am shooting for being down 32 lbs 30 days post surgery as just an off the cuff number. If I assume I can lose 100 lbs in a year, that is less than 1/3 lb per day, and I am assuming the loss will be somewhat logarithmic, maybe a 1 lb/day up front, and 1/10th a lb/day towards the end of the year. I am guessing that I lost 20 lbs of muscle (another complete guess) since my peak fitness of 185 lbs 12 years ago, that hopefully I can put back on in the next year or two.

    Done and Fun 9 Months

I hear exactly what you're saying mate. I'm only 35 but had alot of health issues prior to surgery. Did alot of parties and alcohol for years myself but gave that up for a new life and 8.5 months later with the bypass completely turned my life around as well.. In maintenance now Well done.
  7. Well I made it! My surgery was at 4pm so I didn’t make it to my room until late. That first night was tough. I woke up from the surgery in a lot of pain but the nurse wasn’t giving me a lot of pain meds because I was breathing slowly. Luckily I was able to have my mom there because she works at the hospital. Yesterday was better. VERY sore at the incision sites, hard to tell if it’s the incisions or my insides that were hurting but the pain meds help wonders. Don’t hesitate to use the pain meds. Luckily I didn’t have much gas pain, I think they did a good job at removing the majority of it. I was still very sleepy from all the meds so I only walked 3-4 times during my stay in the hospital. They wanted to discharge me last night but I ended up staying last night and got discharged this morning. Only a little nauseous when I took the liquid Tylenol but they gave me Zoltan and oddly enough waving an alcohol swab in front of my nose helped wonders. I’m home now still in some pain but it’s most just tightness in my abdomen, still using the pain meds. I was a mess crying all the way up until I when to sleep but I survived and so will you! I’m having no trouble with water or protein shakes so that’s good
  8. Hi there, Just to be clear I am going to follow medical advice - I was advised by my doctor to post here to get some feedback about people's emotional and practical experience of cutting down significantly on alcohol. Thanks for all your feedback so far, more welcome
  9. Follow the advice of your medical professionals. talk with your surgeon/dietitian. What you eat and drink will affect your weight loss outcome. Follow your surgeons meal plan. Is alcohol allowed on your plan? What stage is it allowed? How much is allowed?
  10. I gave up alcohol along with soda and sugar pre-op I see alcohol as just one of the many things you have to change
  11. Hi there everyone! I am in the UK, and in the process of having my pre-approval for a gastric sleeve. I am 33, 5'4 (164cm) and approximately 20 stone (280 pounds). One thing that came up in the psych assessment is that I am a heavy drinker, and this will hinder my attempts to lose weight (with or without surgery.) The doctor said I need to decrease my drinking to 10 units a week, which is a lot less than I drink now. I was wondering if anyone had a similar experience, and had to drastically reduce their alcohol intake, and how was their experience of that? Was it easy/difficult? Was it an issue post-surgery? Thanks for your help.

1 Year Post OP Down 112lbs

Brent, no need to feel bad about not exercising. I got to goal weight without any real exercise except regular walking and have maintained it for about nine months. However, I was--and continue to be--very disciplined when it comes to food. I still don't eat sugar or drink alcohol at all, and I keep carbs and fats to a minimum. I'm just not a gym person. We all have to find what works for us and our individual lifestyles. There is no one-size-fits-all long-term solution.

    Liquor

I had a drink fairly early, 3 months out. Joke's on me, I don't get a buzz from alcohol anymore, just a wicked hangover.
  14. A New Day is coming!

    Plan to Suceed

Here is my plan as I start this journey. I am enrolled in a 90 Day program to acquire insurance approval for the gastric bypass surgery. During this time I have to prepare mentally and physically to accept and adhere to a 600 calorie diet after surgery, learn to excercise regularly, stop smoking, stop drinking alcohol. All of which are very positive life changes that I am ready to welcome. I don't expect it to be easy, in fact I try not to think about how hard it is really going to be. Here is a short summary of how I envision the process. Starting this week I am adhering to a strict 1500 calorie diet, June 1st it will reduce to a 1200 calorie diet, July 1st to a 900 calorie diet. Right now I do not see how this will be possible but that is the plan to be ready for a 600 calorie diet by August 1st. Bad habits to correct are smoking and drinking. I plan to stop drinking as quickly as possible so I can focus on stop smoking. I plan to begin the stop smoking process on June 1st by stopping the drinking first I will eliminate one of the motivators to smoke prior to starting this process. I hope to be smoke free before July 1st. This will give me a month to really focus on being prepared mentally and physically for the surgery. I would appreciate any ideas, thoughts, concerns, or suggestions to my plan that could help me be successful. Thank you! 15. 5'5". i typically do not count calories. i am not sure about that. i need to start and keep a better track of that. i just read the labels of the things i am eating/drinking typically. i am seeing anywhere from 45 to 160 calories, in things like low carb tortillas, deli meat, cheese, protein shakes. i do drink alcohol, but only vodka and only with water. i have also cut back on that to see if that was causing the gain. did not notice much of a difference.

    Question for the husbands

Ok I am jumping in on this From a differnt angle NO WLS will not fix a abuser of food and alcohol! Most likely will make it worse My Male Ass Story! There is no doubt i went thru some rough times with this, To put it bluntly was a complete Prick! Moody grumpy and all out miserable! Until i got my head on straight. This is a huge issue with both males and females, the extreme changes our bodies go thru make is different. So this tool will never fix those issues I am not married but very close physically and mentally to my x wife. She saw the changes and it got ugly again. I have a few other friends with privileges and they noticed it also. Even my Male friends said WTF! I am 52 and ended up in a Lake side bar brawl with a bunch of 21 year old. Temper was short and they did cross the line, But I would have never even let it bother me pre WLS. Lucky for me i crashed and got help getting my stuff together. I am fine now but it took some time, back to the old person i was. I did not get divorced from WLS i have been divorced a long time. I suggest you get his closest friend or brother to talk to him Man to Man. In other words Man up or you will loose a lot around you. Then get him a Head Doc that specializes in Divorce saving and behavior Changes. Anything can be fixed! Just may not be easy. But i fully understand Hard to Break a ALpha Male Complex
  19. I’m right there with you. I’m also trying to get my eating back under control. I’m a single mom and have to work 60+ hours a week to make ends meet and also try to find time to spend with my daughter. Stress is why my eating fell off. It’s so hard to control. I’m trying my hardest to get back on track. Life just hits you hard sometimes and it sucks, but you can do it. I’m the same way with alcohol also, it’s a stress reliever. I think for a little bit I started giving up on myself. I was trying to keep everything and everybody else together I couldn’t keep myself together too.

Same experience here—each chewable worse than the next. I could not get past the artificial flavors and sweeteners. If I managed to get it down and was lucky, the feeling would pass after a sneeze or two (and maybe an alcohol swab). RD recommended a capsule when I was on soft foods so I could open it and stir it into food. The vitamin taste was hard to cover, but I preferred that over the fake flavors.
  22. My surgeon had me lose weight before he would book the surgery. He also said he may have me do a liquid diet and he'd let me know at my pre-op appointment. Since I lost above and beyond what he wanted, he did not make me do the liquid diet. He just cautioned me that if I gained the surgery could be cancelled. The way I lost pre-surgery was to start eating mostly the way I would after - protein first, then veggies. No sweets or alcohol. It was 5 months from first appointment to surgery (I was "at" goal weight at 3 months and just had to get on the schedule and keep the weigth off).

    First steps excitement

This is interesting, so many people have so many differences in what each surgeon and/or what their insurance requires before they get surgery even what plan they follow after, to drink alcohol or to not, how often to have follow ups or not at all, how much weight one should be losing and at what rate. I feel that some of my complaints are not valid after seeing what so many other people have to say about certain things. Sorry, perhaps that was my rant for the day. It really is all very interesting though. I did not have to have a drug test only a test to ensure that I am not an alcoholic. But have you spoken to your doctors about the edible and if 6 weeks is long enough or even needed. I ask this because I had a conversation about alcohol and I was told that it is better to not have any in my system at all so after 2 weeks of no alcohol I was able to take the test but it was for insurance purposes and not really at the doctors request so, yea. I hope you are able to get your surgery and that everything works out for you. Keep us posted!

21 y/o guy never able to have alcohol again?

You can have the occasional drink (I had a glass of wine yesterday). However, you'll get drunk real easy so be careful. Also, alcohol can add lots of calories.
  25. I’ve had counseling . I know why I eat . It’s due to boredom. But actually it wasn’t the food . It was the alcohol that took me out this time. I was sober for 3 years . Flunked out of nursing school and picked up the booze . The pound cake back easily. Now I’m fight a battle on two fronts . I’m clean two weeks going on three taking it one day at a time . I’m bored but I’ve decided to come out of this pandemic clean and sober and lighter with new eating habits
