Iron Saturation Dropping?
James Marusek replied to williamsk39's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
After bariatric surgery my iron levels dropped so I began taking iron supplements. I was told by my nutritionist to take ferrous sulfate as an iron supplement for the best absorption. Also it is important to give a 2 hours separation between iron and calcium. -
hour, scary serious. I am finishing up a mandated 30 day electronic compliance , 4+ hours per 24. I averaged 6ร. it gets faxed to Columbus. to,my bariatric program. Jessica b, my case manager delivers the faxes to Certified Nurse Practioner Valerie, my surgeon Dr Needleman's right hand woman. And then something occult, happens. They consult a voodoo priestesd, play cards, go fishing, nobody really knows. Either Valerie calls 7/6 or Jessica calls 7/9. because she will be on vacation until, then. And if i,understand i receive my surgery date. I probably, won't be able b to discard Uncle Snuffly, my,father also had apnea.

My daughter has PCOS (pee-kลhs). The tendency to gain weight is real, as is the likelihood of becoming infertile. According to my daughter, the hirsutism is the part of the disease she hates the most. It's good that you are asking questions. Do you live in the US? If you do and since you aren't 26 yet, are you still getting your insurance through your parents? Do you know what weigh-loss benefits they have? It's true that different insurance companies have different requirements. My insurance requires at least 1 co-morbidity with a BMI between 35-39. Over 40 requires no co-morbidity. You have to be at least 21 years old. The other requirements have to do with getting psychologist and dietician evaluations and 6 months of a supervised dieting attempt through a primary doctor. Yes, the lap band is out. No reputable bariatric surgeon would recommend one today. Check out some videos about weight-loss surgery. Consider making an appointment with a bariatric surgeon to discuss your case with him or her. It's nice to see that you are forward thinking and realize how much access weight can affect your life. Keep us updated, please.

Made my decision
RapidFirePickle replied to Beautfully Flawed's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
My highest weight was 305 (5 ft. 6.5 in), my first bariatric visit 289, my surgery weight 248, current weight 217. I had surgery May 2. I've been staying pretty tight to the rules the doctor set for me, and so far its been really good. You can do this. -
How to find a good surgeon - this is delaying my entire process :(
Lyngolean replied to Assya's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I would agree with Bariatric Hero that it's important that you like your surgeon. I think it could affect your recovery. You don't see him or her all that much, but having a bad vibe...ugh! You are VERY vulnerable during surgery! I could have hugged my surgeon when he told me his views about how determined patients are who keep trying to lose weight despite the lack of long term success, that they are the MOST determined in light of continuing to try despite proof that it doesn't work. Our scheduled consult time was 40 minutes, but I could have picked his brain for longer than the 75 minutes he seemed to happily spend with me. He shared a lot about the most recent research which was informative and thought provoking. I had a list of questions prepared prior to my consult. Good luck! -
How to find a good surgeon - this is delaying my entire process :(
Staceyb2121 replied to Assya's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
New York Bariatric Group is fantastic.. Iโve used Dr.Garber and Dr. Holliver but im sure all the surgeons in their practice are fantastic. Iโve been with that practice since 2012 and they are great from the office staff, nurses, paโs, and surgeons :) -
Hi everyone, I recently decided to have bariatric surgery and I am new to the forum. Does anyone have advice on how to choose a surgeon? Beyond the obvious criteria (insurance approved) what process did you go through to find the one? Just to give some background, I am originally French and even after 4 years in the USA I struggle to understand healthcare and medecine in the USA. Everytime I visit a doctor I feel like I am talking to a used cars salesman, peddling costly procedures before he/she even listens. I live in Manhattan, NY so I think there are good and bad options. I don't trust vitals and healthgrades anymore but as I don't have family here and few friends, my information source is very limited. I have insurance (Aetna) which covers bariatric surgery (hoping for the VSG) but for me an Institute of Quality or whatever distinction is no proof that I have a serious through doctor in front of me. Any suggestions? Thank you!!

Bariatric-branded vitamins are not necessary or better. Taking 2 Multivitamins a day from Centrum or One A Day, or their generics (from Costco, Walgreens, etc) are fine. Try to find a multi that does NOT contain both calcium and iron as taking them together impedes absorption of both, so then it is as if you didnโt take them at all. I take One A Day 50+ as it doesnโt contain iron and then I dose my heme iron separately (2-4 hours apart) from my multi and calcium citrate supplementation. My thyroid medication is also impacted if I take iron and calcium with it , so I donโt; instead, I take thyroid RXs first thing in the morning and vitamins at lunch, dinner, and bedtime. Works out great, which has been verified with excellent lab work results. If you find your vitamins are too big, you can use a pill cutter to make them smaller. However, I didnโt need to do this myself. The only modification I did in early post-op days was to take vitamins one at a time instead of as a handful of pills. As well, donโt stress out about taking or not taking vitamins in the first month as you have plenty of them stored up in your body and wonโt go deficient right away. Ease into your new vitamin regimen if that works better for you. i found chewable and dissolving vitamins made me nauseous or caused me to vomit after bariatric surgery. I think this is because they contain sugar alcohols which are no bueno for me now. Lastly, my doctor emphatically said to NOT take Flinstones or childrenโs vitamins as they donโt contain the right types of vitamins and amounts.

How many days/weekโs post op were you when you started the Purรฉed stage ?
Screwballski replied to Nicole's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This seems to be the new way of handling post op for sleeve patients. My surgeon is/was very conservative but my friend and unrelated medical provider is also a Bariatric professional (non-surgical) and your eating plan is how the industry is gearing post-op plans for sleeve patients these days. Itโs just hard for most surgeons, hospitals to adapt their mindset. I AM NOT suggesting anyone deviate from their provided post-op plan! -
Well I certainly hope you stick around. Inspiration from those that have met goal and gone through the process is so valuable. I try to post daily because I canโt make it to my bariatric group meeting in person due to my work schedule. Maybe that will change when Iโm at goal, and I will only post weekly. Too early to tell. All of us are different but I like reading everyoneโs different opinions, even if I donโt always agree with them.

Something about getting really close to goal has me being way too honest. Obnoxiously honest. I'm openly talking about all my screw ups....which, lets face it...people just don't do. We're all perfect, right? And we should inspire others to achieve perfection and never color outside the lines and never backslide and never admit it. Admitting it is setting a bad example, right? Think of the Newbies! Cover their ears! SAVE them! (in truth, I wish someone HAD admitted that screw ups occur regularly when I was first staring this process..I quite enjoy ugly truths...but I'm weird that way) More and more, I think I'm getting close to the end of my time here at Bariatric Pal. Once upon a time, I recall telling someone...if I stick around at this site past when I reach goal and pretend I have some kind of answer.....please Shoot Me. I don't want to be that person. I'm not that person. By luck, trial and error, Herculean patience, Feck all who knows?...somehow, I'm a stone's throw from the holy grail: Goal. The only answer I've got...is that answers vary. No two people have done it exactly the same way. Try hard every day. Don't give up. Use all the help they give you. Weight has defined so much about my life for so long....i'm just burnt out on it. I want to start talking about other things. I'm giving myself another month for the last 4 pounds...but come August...I think i'm outta here:) I know for a few of you....this is welcome news! Bahahaha! It's been a hell of a ride, my bariatric friends. Legendary. I wish each and every one of you.....fulfillment of your expectations and a safe healthy ride getting there. Smooches!

I had my sleeve done June 27th, 2018! I am beyond excited! Dr. Boorse along with Lehigh Valley Bariatrics helped me to this point! They are both wonderful! I am so excited to start a new chapter! Anyone else have surgery in June? So far the recovery isn't too bad. Pretty sore still, but definitely improving! The first day was miserable dealing with the gas they pump you with! Lol! If anyone has any questions or if I can be a help/support person to anyone feel free to reach out! I'm looking for fellow sleever friends!

And a little Bariatric Levity: Always eat your protein first Your nutritionist of surgeon. may change, your diet tomorrow!๐

First since you have united health care they have a bariatric nurse that you will need to work with call the member services number on the back of your card and ask to speak to a benefit counselor they can tell you everything in your specific plan also by law it is all required to be online so you can create a login thru your specific company and see it all in clear print right online
-
Bottom line: Very few (if any) insurance companies will cover you. The place to start is pretty simple....call your insurance company, give them your rider number and ask what they require to cover bariatric surgery. They'll send you a list in writing if you ask. You probably can access the specifics on their website if you look. I would start there. You might be able to get someone to do it if you self pay. Even then, few doctors will go below a bmi of 35 unless you're throwing at least pre-diabetic A1C numbers. PCOD with no other comorbidities won't cut it. Best wishes. PS, my gastric sleeve (with an unexpected haital hernia repair) cost over 60 thousand dollars in the US. PSS.... here's a chart of what lap band costs in different states: https://www.obesitycoverage.com/insurance-and-costs/how-much/average-lap-band-prices

Where are all the 50 something bypass patients?
iwillbloom18 replied to choosehope's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Good for you! That whole age thing - what the hell? People are living longer and longer. Why should someone's life in their 70s be less valuable or satisfying than someone in their 40s? Or ANY age. I'll be having mine at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, MD by Dr. Andrew Averbach. He's the big kahuna of bariatrics there. Good for us! Keep in touch! -
1 week po... Dilation & IV fluids anyone?
Sparkle&Storm replied to Sparkle&Storm's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi Kimber! I'm feeling better about my job situation... I had spoken with my surgeons office about maybe getting a standard note, and one arrived in the mail yesterday! No mention of digestive health or bariatric surgery. They really are awesome for doing that for me!! I spoke to my boss today and she was very nice and supportive. Said my health is most important, so that made me feel good. She wanted the doctor's note, of course, but that's standard fare and I was obviously prepared for that... I'm still on dilaudid and can't drive, so I sent it with my hubby after he stopped by for lunch. He took it in for me and said everyone in the office was very supportive and concerned. They told him to be sure I knew they were thinking about me and hoping I get to feeling better soon! That made me feel good ๐ So, how are things for you now? Did you have swallowing issues? How long did it take you to start feeling normal-ish again? I'd love to hear any tips or things that helped you get through the rocky start... or just more about your story! I've felt very alone as far as this experience goes, so it's nice to meet someone who also had a rocky start. Misery loves company, after all! ๐๐ -
No one is as smart as that conceited asshat thinks he is. Dude stinks of gimmicks and self-grandiose rhetoric that really excellent doctors wince at (have seen them wince). He's not even accredited by the board of bariatric surgeons and he's not well thought of by doctors who are. He's not well thought of by the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons. He's a general laparoscopic surgeon who thinks he knows everything about Bariatrics...and he pulls most of what he presents as fact....directly out of his arse. Not a fan. The dude is reality TV material. He's a fad writer. He is not someone I'd trust my health to.

Nexium - 14-days every 4 month limit?
Mhy12784 replied to AllyJonesVSG's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It says that because its an over the counter medication. (and they probably dont want to get sued) And if youre taking it longer than that you should be doing so under a doctors supervision (is their point of view) Theres no reason you cant take it everyday, although your bariatric surgeon should really be prescribing it to you (even though its the exact same medication) And yes many people take a ppi like nexium everyday for many many years not just 14 days every 4 months. Ive personally been taking it everyday for the last 5-6 years with no ill side effects. Many of the studies on it are selective and in the elderly population. You should obviously discuss it with a physician but its fine to take longer than 14 days -
I know itโs early, but I figured Iโd make a spot in this big Bariatric world for those of us who are getting surgery done in November. We can keep each other motivated and sane especially around the holiday of Thanksgiving.

Of course we checked on you, you are one of us on Bariatric Pal and we take care of our own! -
I'm not giving up on Uncle Snuffly, you see I know I never will be free. I had 70 episodes an hour, that's about 1 per minute, and my father had it also. Although,it isn't always hereditary mine will be. As soon as I finish my dance toward Bariatric Surgery my Tomkitten may have to have a sleep eval also. Rather he'd inherit money from me instead of this!๐ฐ
