  1. I'm 4 days post-op and have to say I'm doing really good. I had a 2 night stay in the hospital and the only "problems" I had were nausea on the second day and for the first 2 days, I had a really bad back ache. But that was definitely NOT surgery related. I am one who does NOT sleep on my back. Mater of fact, after I hurt my back 8 years ago, I've slept in my recliner. So to actually have to lie down on my back for a couple hours for the surgery, really did my back in. So I did take some pain meds for that. Other than that, I never had to take them for the surgery. Today is the first day that I seem to have a better time getting my Protein in. I'm going to try some tomato Soup for dinner and then maybe a little bit of yogurt later on. Here's my question though (mainly for those who have had the sleeve for a while). I know at first my stomach was making all kinds of noises and just felt really weird. Luckily, it's not feeling as weird and liquids seem to be going down a lot easier. But during healing, is your stomach gonna go through different feelings? Like right now, it kind of feels bruised inside. Not bad, but it kind of reminds me of the feeling of a bruise.
  2. Going to add a smoothy from Dr. Weiner's videos. I had this before surgery and can't wait to try again when I start soft foods. One medium banana 100 calories, 1 Protein 6oz. of low fat greek yogurt 100 calories, 19 grams protein PB2 3 tbsp 80 calories, 7 grams protein Totals 280 calories, 27 grams of protein and delicious

When you can take pills again?

I was told I could take any pills that were smaller than and M&M starting right after surgery. However, my doctor had me opening capsules for the first month and mixing with applesauce or yogurt (for example, my Prilosec and gallstone preventative, Ursodiol). I do chewable multi Vitamin, calcium and sublingual B12. Other than that I'm now swallowing all pills at almost 6 wks post op.

I have got about a billion questions

Plenty of mourning. I have discovered a love for Greek yogurt. Never really liked milk but haven't had any problems the few times I've had it. I can eat some breads but they aren't worth it most times. I eat burgers with only one piece of bread sometimes I can finish them others I can't. Once you get used to protein first it's not that difficult IMO. The liquid diet before and after surgery will get you over the hump. I thought I would never eat sushi again but it wasn't long after and I was eating it again albeit a much much smaller portion! It's a mental game when you start to see the weight loss you will not want those things as much. Stay away from sodas if you can. I have to fight that urge too much! Good luck and remember why you're doing it take your vitamins and work on eating to live not living to eat. So far the good outweighs the bad. Everyone here is a great resource. If you need any answers someone has them. It is different for everyone. It's been a year since my surgery. Sorry if I rambled

What is on your Trader Joe's Shopping List?

Some of my Trader Joe's favorites are: - I'm a fan of almost all of their coffee. Their low-acid French Roast was lovely when I was easing back into drinking coffee post-op. - Burrata - Mozzarella - Trader Joe's brand of plain Greek yogurt. It is low carbs and high in Protein. - Their brand of unsweetened, plain kefir - Misto allo griglia (grilled eggplant, red peppers, and zucchini) - Frozen nectarines - Frozen sweet potatoes (Far lower in carb than you might think. I make smoothies with them using milk, ice, and cinnamon) - Frozen turkey burgers - Almond butter - chicken sausage - Mango bar bites (10 grams of carbs for one, and quenches the craving for sweets) - Mango macarons (15 grams of carbs for three, but I'll usually just have one at a time) I also love their non-food products, like their cards, mango honey shaving cream, lavender body scrub, and mango tangerine candle.

    Protein goal

I agree, if you can't get in too much Protein at one sitting, you may need mini meals through out the day. Cottage cheese 1/4 cup is around 11-12 g of protein.. greek yogurt (dannon light & fit) I know is 12g of protein.. oscar meyer P3 protein packs deli Snacks are about 14g of protein (they're 2.3 oz) Find some things that you like, that are easy for you to get down.. you'll be able to increase your protein a bit more down the road. I know early on it was easier for me to drink no sugar added carnation instant Breakfast with a cup of skim milk-- it's lighter feeling going down than the usual protein powders... not as much protein, but I was able to work up to the ones like unjury when my stomach was ready for them. Or sprinkle unflavored or vanilla Protein Powder into yogurt, applesauce, etc to get more in that way maybe.
  10. I'm doing very well. I had troubles with the anesthesia but other than that no problems at all. I'm down to one Protein shake a day and getting the rest from food; Greek yogurt, eggs, Beans and cottage cheese, some chicken. I start real food Monday. Can't wait. I'm using toddler utensils and small plates. Only getting about 600-700 calories but my doc said to worry about protein and fluids first. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  11. I'm at the end of my first week of phase II/pre-op/liver shrinking diet and I was getting a little bored at first. My surgeon's diet consists of 3 Protein shakes a day (no fruit -too much sugar), 3 servings of dairy (either in Protein Shakes or lite yogurt), and raw veggies or a small green salad with lite vinegrette dressing; with the added colace and benefiber to keep me regular. By Tuesday (I started the diet last Monday) i was sick of protein shakes but I thought I only liked vanilla. I went to the Vitamin Shoppe where they sell single serving packets and I found that I like strawberry, strawberry-banana, oreo (of course), and chocolate so I bought a couple for variety. Then I realized that vanilla Protein powder is fabulous with coffee and some ice cubes in the Ninja IQ blender! It is now my morning fix. I know I need to add more variety, such as broth so maybe when I'm out shopping for more yogurt today I will do that. If anybody shops at Publix, I found their green label greek yogurt is really good and the nutritionist told me it is okay to eat. My one vice that I have to give up by the end of this week....diet coke. I know that I can never have anything carbonated again, and I have made peace with that but I will miss it dearly! I have a very difficult time with sugar substitutes, even in things like Crystal Light because I've had brain surgery twice, for aneurysms in my 30s and the surgery in my left frontal lobe really affected my taste buds so any sugar sub really tastes bitter to me. I did find that truvia is fine in my coffee. I know surgery will be here before I know it - because I am trying to get my work done for about 3 weeks in advance so time is running out quickly!

    Post sleeve pain in stomach

Same issue here. I find that warm liquids don't do it as bad. And I'm supposed to be eating full liquids like applesauce, yogurt, etc but I'm scared to! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  13. I moved to the Orlando area (from South Florida) but I'm still down there in spirit! I began the process in January and my surgery date is 27 June...just 9 days away. I'm excited and terrified but currently just excited. I'm on the phase II diet, which I thought would be terrible drinking only Protein shakes, 3 times a day, with fat free yogurt (green label publix brand is really good if you like greek yogurt), with some sugar free Jello if I need it and a small green salad each day with lite vinagrette dressing. I could have raw veggies, but they're not on my list of foods that I like . While I'm not down in South Florida it does seem like the three of us are around the same starting weight with similar goals so we should keep in touch during the entire process. I do travel down there an awful lot -with family still in Palm Beach and Hollywood so you never know -maybe one day after we are all used to our new eating habits we could meet up and share stories! Or maybe the two of you could come up here -visit Disney...I may or may not work for one of the areas within.
  14. Hi Everyone I am 20 weeks post op and am very pleased with the 60 pounds I have lost. The Dr is telling me at this point I should be eating about 1/2 cup of things like canned tuna, chicken, cottage cheese, 4 oz of dense Protein meats or 2 eggs. However it seems like whenever I eat any dense protein meals like eggs, pork, ham, tuna and even cottage cheese I get terrible pains under my left breast area that lasts for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. I am only eating the protein as I can hardly ever get to the vegetables. When I eat lighter protein like chicken, ground turkey, cheese and turkey sticks, Greek yogurt, Protein shakes, Soups, hot chocolate, Protein Bars, nuts I do not get the same intensity of pain but there is still some mild pain and horrible noises which I am assuming is associated with the food being digested. I have had pain all along since week 3 and I have mentioned it to my surgeon at the 1 month and 3 month marks. He keeps telling me this is my sign that I am full and should continue what I am doing. At 20 weeks I still have that pain and I am barely getting in 700 to 900 calories a day, however I am getting in my 60 to 80 grams of protein at this point. I don't see him again until the end of July. The pain is really getting to me and I hate being sick each day. The last two painful episodes when I ate 1/2 cup of Tuna for lunch on Thursday and 2 hard boiled eggs for lunch on Friday where really bad and forced me to stretch out on my bed to try and relieve the pain. Thank goodness I was home and not at work. My questions are these: Do you also experience the pains associated with the eating of dense Proteins or is this just unique to me? If you do or did experience this when if ever did or does the pain stop? Would it be a good idea to try and eat the lighter proteins for awhile and come back at a later date to the denser proteins? Or should I still try to continue to eat the dense proteins but maybe reduce the amount? Replies to my questions would be appreciated as you have always been here for me since I came on board last June.

    How much to eat?

It sounds like that new surgeon who replaced the first one you saw didn't verify with you what had previously been discussed by the first surgeon. I am so sorry but it seems like you have had trouble with this since day one. During my very first visit, I was give a blue binder my Dr called the Sleeve Bible. I was to read it and ask any questions when I saw him the following month. I was to be placed on a high Protein, low carb diet and see him each month for the next 6 months. I saw my Dr 7 times before my surgery and was free to ask whatever questions I wanted and he took the time to answer each one. I also ordered The BIG Book on the Gastric Sleeve from this site and read every page of it Just like Dub I also was told no juices as they contain sugars and the acid might due me harm. My first 2 weeks post op I was allowed protein Soups, shakes, sugar free Jello, greek yogurt, sugar free popsicles and Protein drinks like Isopure. At week three I was allowed to add 1 egg for the day. At week 4 I was allowed soft foods. It wasn't until week six that I was allowed to begin eating dense protein like chicken, ground turkey etc. I was not allowed fruit either until 6 weeks and than it was an apple or banana. You need time to heal and when you do start eating food again take it slowly as some foods you may not be ready for yet. I hope others will post their plans so you can see there are many different plans out there but taking it slow and easy is the best way to go. Good Luck!!

    Protein goal

If you are two months out can you not eat food? What happens when you eat things like Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, turkey, tuna or other fish, chicken, etc.?

    Protein goal

Order the sample pack of unjury from their website. It is a good quality Protein. They have unflavored powder that you can mix into pudding, yogurt and other things. I was on it pre-op. Luckily I can handle the Premier Protein post op. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  18. I'm still pre-surgery but here are some suggestions: Skim milk (almond milk, soy milk, etc.), No Sugar Added Carnation Instant Breakfast, sugar free pudding, creamed/strained Soups, V8, greek yogurt (is on some full liquid diets but check with yours).

    Water and Medications

If you're permitted by your medical team, some pills can be crushed and mixed with applesauce or yogurt and ingested that way. My Dr has recommended that. From what I've been told you cannot crush extended release pills, you'd have to opt for the regular version of that medication.
  20. I drink liquid yogurt and take two ascidopholis capsules daily. What else do you suggest? Maybe Currelle tablets? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    "Sugar Free"

Oh yeah, I definitely intend to get yogurt as well. Oatmeal is just cheaper right now and easier to stock up on without fear of expiration while I'm pre-op. Plus the only flavors in sugar free were maple brown sugar and apples and cinnamon, both of which are bleh to me. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    "Sugar Free"

Wow so that leaves a whole lotta nothing to eat! I suspect my reply may be a bit controversial, but for one thing I avoid anything that says fat free or low fat, unless that is naturally the case. Otherwise it usually means added carbs and fillers. I have adjusted my own diet to what has worked best for me in the past and that is.. a low carb, HIGH FAT diet. Yes really, high fat. I eat real butter, real mayo, bacon, sausage, whole milk yogurt, and the like. I know this is going to freak some people out (OMG THE RULES!) but know what happened when I got off the low fat bandwagon? I broke my 3 week stall immediately and dropped about 7 pounds in one week. I also experienced a great reduction in hunger! I did this at about the 2 month mark. Today is my 3 month surgiversary. So anyway I confessed my rebellious diet switcharoo to my nutritionist yesterday and she didn't have much to say about it other than maybe by eating more fat I was bumping myself out of starvation mode and needed the extra calories to break my stall. She may be partly right but I can't agree entirely because I am, as I keep saying, A Professional Dieter. I know my body better than anyone and how it reacts to various percentages of macronutrients. Doing Low Carb/High Fat in the past was by far the most successful plan for me. I was able to drop 50 pounds in 5 months, without surgery and reached my ideal weight in maybe 7 or 8 months. (How did I gain it back? I ate carbs again.) I guess my point is, in the end we should all do whatever works best for us. I learned pretty early that I was in no danger of dumping, I also learned pretty early, that carbs such as crackers, fruit, and even vegetables were causing me to stall, but that didn't surprise me because it's not the first time. Early on you should just do whatever your team tells you to do (there's not much chance of sticking to low fat, low sugar, and low salt tho - good luck with that) Once you are more "on your own", you can choose to continue following their rules if they are working for you, or make your own if that works better. I make sure my team knows what I'm doing, and as long as I'm getting such great results, I will continue doing what works. Ok go easy on me.
  23. My program specifies you should get sugar/salt/fat free of everything from oatmeal, canned fruits and canned veggies to yogurt and everything in between. I was wondering if this is just their program preference or merely a suggestion? I know the logic behind canned fruits in syrup because that's calorie city, but oatmeal, for example, isn't too terrible on its own (single serve packets). I bought some variety packs of normal oatmeal and I figured I could split the flavor packs with some regular oats we have to dilute the sugar content (and maybe even add Protein powder?)...is this a bad way to go about it? Outside of the oatmeal, I got sugar free canned veggies (peas), low sodium chicken broth, fat free tomato Soup and no sugar added canned fruit packed in Water...are all of these good for weeks 1-5? I know for like the veggies and the fruit I will probably have to puree them for the first 2ish weeks. Does oatmeal have to be pureed in the immediate post-op after liquid diet? My best guess is they do that so you can stay aware of dumping syndrome which can still happen in sleeves (I've seen various percentages tossed around from 3-17%) and to guide towards better choices in the long term, but how strict do you feel it is? Do you meticulously search for specific versions of seemingly healthy products? If you do, where do you find good variety in sugar/fat/salt free things? I'd love some suggestions! As always, information is always appreciated!
  24. Mostly Greek yogurt, scrambled eggs, beans, chicken, protein shakes, applesauce, I did try ground turkey week 3 that stayed down well. Not much else, I can't seem to eat and drink without two hours of eachother or I throw up. Weight loss is good, just very nauseous A LOT.
  25. @@beyondgrief There idea of "examples" was 1 oz Protein, 1 oz starch for Breakfast (1 oz yogurt, 1 oz oatmeal). It is just to vague to me. What if I buy the wrong yogurt or oatmeal?? lunch example 1oz protein, 1 oz veggie (1 oz cream Soup, 1 oz v8 juice). dinner 1oz protein 1 oz fruit (1 oz sugar free pudding, 1 oz grape juice).
