    I'm here to help...

And...soon to be TOM would explain the Zippety Doo Dah all day yesterday!!!! There were times when I knew I was getting a visit. Just had to get on the scale. I would flucuate up to 6lbs during that time. Ugh! Just keep your foods good and healthy and try not to let it upset your way of eating...and, drink plenty of fluids. Good Morning Everyone! Happy Monday! Back to my "normal" self. Just a little bump in the road with the stones. I hate the word hate so I will just say I REALLY dislike when my life gets interrupted by them. Julie...hope you were able to sleep. You really do need to get to the bottom of this. From the sounds of it, your DH is missing one of his butt cheeks and I know you don't like being that way. I would be a b__ch on wheels and insist on some answers. You need some action on this pain you are having. We have a busy week around here. DH and DS have a few pre-spring meetings to go to and I was signed up to go also but an overnight with a friend looked a little more apealing. Heading out early Wed morning with a friend to help her find a MOB dress. Her DS's wedding is May 1. Time to get on it. She is about a size 14 (has put on about 60lbs in the last few years) and just is having a tough time making herself look for a dress. She feels "fat" in everything she has tried on this far. She knows I will be honest with her on how things fit, so she invited me to be her guide. Should be fun. She's a beautiful woman that always had mega self-esteem but she has now lost that with the weight gain. I feel her pain. The trouble with living in the sticks is that we always have to drive 3-4 hours for any quality shopping. We'll get er done! My stone incident made me tight over the weekend and notice it's not much better this morning. Got my cals in though with soups, etc. Always have a stash of homemade soups in the freezer for times like that. Was able to get in a protein bar and a bowl of oatmeal with dates this morning already. Well, need to get to the books. Been putting them off for a week and they just won't do themself. You all have a great day. Eva..miss ya. Come out, come out, where ever you are!

    Newbie

Welcome from the Land of Gracious Living -- that is what it says on the local license plates. I am watching the sun set after a full day of watching the NCAA basketball tournaments, 60 Minutes is on the HD flatscreen, and I am overdue for my delicious dinner: a chocolate Protein shake. I am scheduled for my surgery on Wednesday, March 24th. I won't know for sure until tomorrow afternoon. Last Thursday I went to my surgeon's office to meet with the surgery scheduling person; they weighed me as I had been on the liquid only diet for the previous ten days. To my chagrin I had gained four pounds; the young lady I met with informed me they would need to reschedule me because of this. I was totally bummed and confused. How did that happen? After a few minutes of protestation and dismay, I gathered up my crestfallen ego, took my wife by the arm and made my way back to the parking lot. My option was to lose this weight and a few more by Monday; my surgeon would decide then if it was a go or no-go. If a no-go, the young lady promised to reschedule me the first thing the following week. Fast forward to the afternoon when I met with my Family Physician. We chatted about this situation and he asked what exactly was I eating. So I rattled off a litany of things including V8 juice, the broth from chicken Noodle Soup and Beef Noodle Soup, and at least 72 oz of G2 Sports drink/day. He started to chuckle and asked me to lift up my pant leg so he could look at my legs and ankles. He gently squeezed me just above the ankle for about 30 seconds, enough to leave a noticeable indentation. He looked me in the eye and said, "I am surprised at you. You are a college graduate, a pretty smart guy. Yet you didn't realize you were pumping yourself full of Sodium. The weight gain is Water weight." Pointing to the bottle of water I carried in, he said, "And your solution to losing that weight is to cut out the G2 and stick to the water." So for the next three days it was Protein drinks and bottled water -- interrupted by a few dozen visits to the WC. Hopefully, I will have something good to post tomorrow night. And if not, I am cool with that, too. It may mean another week of protein drinks and water, but I will lose the weight to improve my chances for a successful surgery. Enough about me. How are you ex-fatties doing now. I need to read some success stories!
  3. I'm sorry to hear about your loss. That would be enough to make anybody depressed, tired. But if you feel like that isn't the reason, keep looking. Like Cindy, I'm not a doctor. But I've spent about 6 years going through perimenopause and menopause and I'm here to tell you, it does a number on you in so many ways. Some of the symptoms, hot flashes, tired, sleepless nights, weight gain, moody, hair loss, vision changes, loss of interest in intimacy and I could keep going. It's so wonderful being a woman. We are complicated and wonderful creatures. It might not hurt to check with your gynecologist. Maybe ask about hormone replacement therapy.

    Have PCOS-considering VSG

thinopia-I also have Hashimoto's thyroiditis (the autoimmune hypothyroid), so I do have what my endocrinologist calls "the double whammy" with PCOS AND hypothyroidism. He never pushes WLS, but does say I need to lose weight. With PCOS, it's the chicken or the egg-does PCOS cause weight gain (which I believe it does, b/c I had no problems with weight growing up until I got in my early 20s), but then weight gain makes PCOS symptoms worse. If only it were easy to lose weight. I seem to put on 10-15 pounds in just a couple of months by doing nothing different. I will have to be private pay because DH's insurance does not cover WLS at all. I guess I just wonder that if I am going to get similar results with WLS as what I would with a physician supervised diet/exercise program, then I am not sure if I want to do surgery. Of course the surgeon is going to recommend surgery, b/c that's money in his pocket, so it's not like they don't have some kind of bias. I haven't gone to an informational seminar yet-I am supposed to go next week. The surgeon also has medically supervised diet program-either 6 weeks or 6 months where they do a program just for you, and even go to the grocery store with you. You also meet with someone who has a degree in exercise physiology to train 2 times per week. I am really torn, because I get so inspired by the weight loss that I have seen people talk about with VSG, but then I wonder with the PCOS and the hypothyroidism (which is only getting worse as I get older and my body destroys my thyroid and I have to go on higher doses of thyroid medicine as time goes on), if I will have all the wonderful results as what everyone else has had. I did print out the paperwork for the surgeon I am going to, and he does have a specific section for PCOS. I don't know if they cover that in the informational seminar, or if that part is covered during the consult with the surgeon ( I don't know if you have to commit to anything prior to meeting with the surgeon).

Should I cancel my surgery? Help!

Ditto that! I'll just say that it's great that you don't have any co-morbidities--yet. You're very young though, and look....95-98% of all people who lose excess weight gain it back PLUS some. SO many of us here played the yo-yo game and dieted ourselves fatter and fatter over the years. I know we'd all have LOVED to have had this option when we were your age. As far as the cost goes--I've said this before, but I figured it's half the cost of a new car. So maybe we buy a used care the next time or two...so? And the Biggest Loser contestants? He couldn't say who specifically, but my surgeon has done the VSG on a former contestant. You negative relatives aren't being rational about this, and maybe there's a reason (fear, jealousy, whatever).... but it's YOUR health, YOUR future, and YOUR money. Know what I'd do? I'd go ahead and do it, but don't even tell them until you're well on your way to goal. It'll be hard to argue with your success at that point. :lol0:

    Have PCOS-considering VSG

Lovesthebeach, I too have PCOS and insulin resistance. I also have hypothyroidism but no comorbidities. I noticed there is a place on this site for other health issues, but no one ever posts there! Unfortunately, I have not had the VSG yet and am still in the insurance approval stage. I have talked to my endocrinologist and my potential VSG surgeon about having VSG and they both agree that it is a good idea and seem confident that I can still lose weight with these conditions, though possibly not as much as without hypothyroidism. Hopefully, others with PCOS will post about their experiences. For those who don't know....PCOS stands for Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. It is a hormonal imbalance which can lead to weight gain, diabetes, heart disease, hypothyrodism, infertility, etc. According to my endocrinologist, it does not necessarily mean that you have actual cysts on your ovaries, but is more about the group of symptoms and blood test results. Good luck to you! I've decided to have the VSG and am anxious for my insurance approval!
  7. What a Jerk Face! Bands aren't dying out. My doctor does more bands then bypasses. Also...You are only suppose to loose up to 70% of your excess weight in 5 years. So if you are a 100 over you are expected to loose 70lbs in 5 years. Be proud of your accomplishments. You are truely an inspiration to everyone. I have been banded for almost 2 years and I had a horrible weight gain and my doctor keeps pushing me. KEEP GOING BE PROUD!
  8. Hello guys, I haven't been here in the longest time. I'm worried about my band and my weight gain. A few months ago I got a fill and I felt the effect of it the next day, while eating. Tighter, nice. Since then, I've only felt it in the mornings once in a while and I've been eating truckloads of food. I've not maintained my diet and I have gained 20 lbs in the last 3 months. I don't feel like I have any restriction and I eat as much as I did before the surgery (almost). This is HORRRIBBLLLE. I feel so extremely guilty and depressed, but I know that I need to snap out of it in order to get myself out of this hole. My question is: Can there be something wrong with my band? I've never had the "full in the esophagus" feeling. The least amount that I've ever eaten with my band was 3 string cheeses with meat and an apple, which is a good amount. Now I eat bigger portions and I am hungry all the time. *Adult Sentence will follow*...My husband and I do have sex a lot and he folds me into positions that hurt my band area and we re-adjust. But it often feels like a dull pain over there when I just breathe. Kinda like it's a mass of dull-gas that never goes away. Plus, no restriction and I've been banded for a year and a half now, I think. But it feels like I've done nothing but gone downhill after my last fill. I must have anywhere between 4-5/6 ccs in a Realize Band. Last fill was 1.5 cc. I've done a horrible job lately, I know this. Yeah, it would be nice if I had the band to blame. But maybe I just want to get opinions on whether or not I am crazy for thinking something might be wrong. I thought slippage because..something must be wrong. But I don't get sick... Leakage, maybe? Probably sounds like the most possible, right? My dr. referred me for an Xray, so I am waiting to be called in for one, some day.
  9. Morning peeps...I'm out of bed, but don't know about 'up'. The pain in my arm is back with a vengeance and nothing is helping. I have to take my son into the doc today since he's decided he wants to switch from his pediatrician to a 'grownup doc' and I think I'll ask her if there's anything she can do as a temporary measure. Otherwise everything is going along swimmingly. The swelling has apparently gone down from my last fill 2 weeks ago and I could probably use another .25cc fill but I think I'm going to hold off and see how it goes over the next week. I normally don't step on the scale except Monday but needed a boost yesterday and found I dropped another 2 lbs but I'm not going to make it official until next Monday...at which time it will probably disappear and tell me I haven't lost anything. Betsy: I wish I could 'shop' in a daughter's closet, but I guess my husband's will have to do. Although, while his sweatshirts are co-ed, I'll never fit into his jeans. They're typical flat hipped men's pants and my curves just laugh at them. Bob: You probably could chalk the weight gain up to female hormones...but then you'd have some 'splainin' to do, Lucy. Bob, love the pics of your home on facebook. Want a roommate? I refer to my little home as 'the house from hell'. Liz: Don't worry about the scale. My scale didn't move for weeks but I could tell from my clothes that I was definitely losing. Leigha: I think our priorities change...plus, as we lose the weight, we're physically *able* to do more. Christie: I wouldn't worry about the crackers. My doc is one of those who says 'eat what you can, drink if you can't'. I was able to eat after every single fill without any problems, although my list of foods changed. HB: I stopped at a McD's to pick up something to eat for my son one day a few weeks back and ate one of his fries. *Big Big mistake*. Not only did I learn that (a) they weren't as good as I remembered and (:cursing: french fries do stick...I also learned that eating 'on the run' is a big nono. There is nothing worse than being stuck and having to pull over until the episode passes. It's not like I could take a gulp of his drink and let it all come back up because 'oversploding' on the side of the road with cars whizzing by just was not an option in my book. Ok...need to get to work. Have a great day everyone! Oh, and welcome to the newbies! .

How often do you weigh yourself?

I weigh myself nearly every day...first thing in the AM, wearing nothing...I just feel its more accurate (my clothing tends to weigh 5-8lbs depending on the season)...most scales are are off by 1% of your body weight +/-...so I don't put too much emphasis on minor fluctuations. Generally speaking, I have to weigh myself daily because ignorance is bliss for me...if I skip weighing myself for 2 weeks, I'll step on the scale and have a 5+lb weight gain. So it just keeps me focused.

    band slipped!

Having gone through this, I can tell you my symptoms: I had pain in the abdomen area, the port area was very tender as was my stomach. I found I was not feeling any restriction any longer. Also, and it took me a while to figure this one out; weight gain. I gained almost 30 pounds and was in denial the whole time. If you feel you have slipped, do not hesitate, check it out right away.

    The beginning

thanks for all your support. i so look forward to the journey. i spend so much time on this forum and looking at before and after photos. i have even dreamed of issues related to the sleeve. so my mind is thinking even when i am sleeping. regarding my baby's birth. i have had infertility issues for the past 13 years. not weight related but related to an autoimmune disease. in the end after years of trying every thing and having multiple miscarries we sought our a gestational carrier for our children. my daughter is now 5 1/2 months old and our new baby will be born the end of august. i am totally in love. when i think about my children i just do not want them to witness my struggle with obesity. i know food will always have to be monitored but my relationship with food will be more normal i think with the sleeve. as for timing. i hope to have the sleeve the first week of august. if all works out i will have surgery about two to three weeks before our new baby arrives and hope to be feeling better by that point. i will then continue my recovery from surgery as i am also on maternity leave from my work. with having surgery i will also be able to use up my big bank of sick time and not use my vacation time on my maternity leave. so i think that is a great plan. at this time i am planning on going to dr aceves for my surgery since i have a bmi of 31.8 and will be self pay. i am a nurse and never thought i would consider mexico. i did talk to a doctor in tucson and he said i would not even qualify for his program. point blank. so for surgery in tucson i would need to wait for several years and more weight gain and more comorbidities..... that just seems crazy!!! i have 70-75 lbs to loose. and i have been on some kind of diet it seems my whole life.... well at least planning some sort of diet. the more i read of dr aceves and his program in mexicalli i get more convinced he is the doctor for me. i love that he has so many patients on this board that highly recommend him and from what i can find on my own research a great reputation and wonderful surgical stats. so that is that. thanks again for your support. kelly
  14. I so afraid of weight gain due to hypothyroid condition. I am not a bringer, small amounts of foods is enough for me and satisfying. My problem is that I have only lost 10 pounds since being banded Dec 28, 2009. I am exercising and watching my food intake. What do I have to do to lose more weight. I am disappointed that I have not lost more. I started out weighing 191 and down to 179, but today my scale showed I gained three pounds (183). What can I do to lose more weight? Do I go back to liquid diet again?
  15. Sucks Lemons for sure Rain....who knew band equals weight gain. well, it is empty but still....
  16. Hey Vicki whats going on with you?/ New fixed band= weight gain huh??
  17. Hi everyone, Beautiful pictures Nicole! You looked lovely and so happy! Great job on the cake and the reception Reggie. Amazing! So, only 1 week to go for me. I had friends over for dinner this weekend and cooked some of the recipes from cooking school in Paris. I am up half a pound naturally. One would think I would have learned by now the connection between eating and weight gain. Jeeze. I am working like crazy to get it back off with extra time at the gym today.

Nicole, I hope you had a wonderful time. Jes, Candra, Donna and myself were glad to pull this together. It was great to have Heather over and meet new people. We had a lot of fun I a still trying to recuperate. I had to make another cake for a huge party on Saturday. All is well here. Jes the shrimp was off the chain! I can eat that all day and so can Teiko! Thanks for all the help you guys! So I got a fill after all the weight that I gained after Dr.Park read me the riot act as I danced around the reason for the weight gain. I have tried to be good. I have still maintained the 9lbs loss since my fill. Candra, I think I will name my band Rocky because it is kicking my a..... When I eat the stuff that I a not supposed to it gets stuck, so yes it is working and I am going to make it work hard. I want to be at at least 245 by May my bandiversary. I wish i would be at goal but it is not mathematically feasible. Hope everyone is doing well! Good night

    I'm here to help...

Hi All! With Spring just around the corner thought I'd try a colorful font. Back on the bandwagon pretty solid right now. Started to show some weight gain after last weekend's birthday party. That Hollandaise Sauce was a killer. Then there were these small cheesecakes.... Then Monday at work there was unbelievable goodies. Someone went to Panera Bread and bought all these day old pastries and someone else baked. I can usually say no to pastries but that was the day I found out we're getting audited for compliance with all the NCLB paperwork and recordkeeping. Plus I've been hurting, more this week than the past weeks. My neck is stopping me from being able to walk because just a little bit of arm-swinging irritates it and causes nerve-compression and headaches. I may go back to the Workman's Comp Dr. and request Toradol which is a powerful antiinflammatory and pain killer. I want to avoid having my neck get so bad I end up needing an epidural. That's what happened a few years ago after a bad fall. I shattered my knuckle and needed surgery but that didn't even hurt compared to my neck. I'm not that bad yet but I need to avoid exercise in order to not aggravate it. But that takes away my biggest mood controller, pain killer, and ADHD therapy--walking. So right now I'm gutting it out with the food and I don't have the exercise to help me. Hard protein and some veggies. A few nuts and seeds. SF DCaf lattes and protein shakes. Lost two lbs quickly. One to go. But I already notice my pants are tighter, not because of the weight as I'm only a lb over goal, but because of lack of exercise. Amazing how that trims inches. I may have to lose another 5-10 lbs to keep looking as thin as I did. Especially if I really have to limit the exercise from now on. I must say, that though I can eat around the band, its not comfortable. And the band made it really easy to get back into the groove. As soon as I started filling up with protein first, there wasn't room for much else. Congratulations to those newly banded and those about to be banded. Hugs to all those for whom life has taken a difficult turn. And when gas from sauerkraut has you walking the floors all evening and you can't find a comfortable position, just remember, this too shall pass. Laughter and love, Cheri
  21. Some people will never, I mean never ever know what it feels like to go through a weight gain/ loss cycle. To them, you never did enough effort. To them, you are a person who is lazy, eat to much and doesn't have any self control. So don't be angry about her commit because she has no clue. No one know you more than yourself so keep doing what's good for you. Don't keep telling people about what you think is good for yourself. I'm 30 years old now and I've wanted the band since I was 25. My ex-boyfriend made me feel bad about wanting to have the surgery. He felt just like that girl at your job. He has the body type that never needs to workout and always stay fit. So for year I was killing myself at the gym and feeling bad for myself because I just never could keep the weight off. I finally find out that I have a hormonal problem (PCOS) which affects my weight and having children. So guess what? Five years later with one less issue in my life (X- boyfriend) and a lot to look forward to. I'm having my band surgery on 3/26/10 and I can't wait. So do whats right for you. Good Luck.

    Boston dude

Congrats on making the decision! I too made the decision back in October, the time will pass very quickly. You touched on some of the emotional aspects of weight gain and weight loss, I have read many great trheads on this subject here. They really opened my eyes to the person I have become and to the road that I am about to travel. Good luck on your journey and dont be a stranger. :frown:
  23. Nina-- If you aren't vomitting and can get a reasonable amount of food down, there's no reason your band should slip. Talk to your doc about weight loss/weight gain during pregnancy depending on what you decide to do. My doc was ok with me maintaining weight, though I'm on track to gain an appropriate amount of weight-- 20-ish pounds. I had a total unfill, so I'm happy with that. Some people have reported that their doc was find with weight loss as long as the patient was eating enough food and baby was growing. Depends on the doc and the person. If you decide to continue with your pregnancy, your band will still be there when you're done. I know it's frustrating, but the band doesn't have a "honeymoon" period like some weight loss surgeries. Yes, the full signals may be a softer as time goes on, but there are a lot of people who lose a little weight early on and go on to finish losing weight years after their band is installed. Good luck with your decision!

Going Down Down Down Down Down

Wow! I've never lost weight like this in my entire life. I stepped into my spinal specialists office March 1 and he put me on steroids for my excruiating back and hip pain and told me to stop working out. So paranoid me starts drinking lemon water because I knew it would flush out excess fluids and in my mind counteract the weight gain affects of steroids. I went back to my Dr. yesterday to get a steroid shot in my back. He said my face looked alot more relaxed, but I still had pain. Nothing like it was the week before but still a problem. Not sure I will ever be back to normal but I am feeling alot better. I've been trying not to jump on the scale every day but that hasn't happened because I am steadily losing a pound a day now! It's like it is just melting off my body. My doctor told me it is because of the pain I was in that held on to the weight, now that I am feeling better, my body is letting it go. I believe maybe part of that is true, but not to the extent of losing 7 lbs in 10 days! So as long as I'm on the these steroids and still losing weight, and even when I get off the steroids, I am still drinking lemon water. I've read about it online and it states that it cleanses the body of toxins and flushes them out. I believe it, I am feeling soooooo much better too. And I am only 3.5 lbs away from passing the dreaded 200 lbs mark! That day will be a celebration and you will hear from me on that day for sure!!!!! :tt1:
