    Alcohol?

Interested in this also. I know that alcohol is just empty calories, carbonation is bad for the sleeve(I don't like beer anyway),and whatnot, just curious on others' experiences with drinking moderate amounts(I'm talking like one beverage for the night).

    Alcohol?

What is everyone's views on drinking? Both pre and post surgery. I don't drink alot it would only have to be about once every few months. I was just wondering what people's experience were with alcohol...

    Gas advice much needed

yes - the above commenters are right. Some people are intolerant of artificial sweeteners - or at least SOME artificial sweeteners. Sugar alcohols (those with names the end it "-itol" - like xylitol and malitol) are the worst offenders.

    Alcohol pre op?

Wow. I never knew alcohol did this. I'm quitting completely. Had no idea it enlarged your liver for a 2 weeks. Though I don't drink that much, I'm sure to have at the very least one or two drinks a week, so that means I've never ever had a normal liver since I was 19??? Yikes! Any Sleevers Who Are 5 - 10 Years Out?

Thanks for chiming in, Valentina! I appreciate it. Congratulations on your weight loss and for maintaining it! Might I ask you how hard it's been to stay on the straight and narrow for five years? At five years in, do you feel you've pretty much conquered your food cravings and old eating habits, or is it akin to alcoholism, where you pretty much have to literally take it one day at a time for the rest of your life? Also, might I ask how much skin you had removed and if your insurance paid for it? I understand the skin surgery is *far* more uncomfortable than the sleeve surgery, so my sympathy is with you, and I hope you recover soon, and that you might continue to report in on how that is doing, as I believe my wife will be looking into that after a year or so (as per the requirements of her insurance) ((we're going to go through the sleeve process together - we're at the stage where the surgeon has received our documentation and we hope to have our info sent to the insurance company for evaluation soon). Again, thank you *so* much for answering - it means a lot to talk with someone who's been dealing with the effects of this drastic procedure in the long term! -Lyle Tucker
  6. I have a big event 3 days before my surgery. Is there any danger to having a few drinks at the event?

    I turned 40 in style!

I couldn’t believe my scale this morning, 192.4! I’ve lost a total of 49 pounds so far, only one pound from half way there. My last fill really did the trick for me, I’m comfortable most of the time and even though I still can’t eat a whole cup of food at one sitting, I’m held over after eating for at least four hours. This must be the sweet spot everyone talks about. I had a fabulous vacation with DH earlier this month to celebrate my 40th birthday. We flew to Cancun and stayed at a gorgeous hotel on the Rivera Maya called The Valentin Imperial Maya. I highly recommend it. I discovered a new favorite dish that is terrible for me but was so wonderful tasting called Lobster Thermidor. I’d never heard of it before but DH had. It was decadent and saucy and perfect. I ate it twice while we were on vacation. Even with that and the daily doses of yummy alcoholic beverages, I came home three pounds lighter. DH gained 8 pounds, but has already managed to take it back off in less than two weeks. Men! I was able to do the physical excursion that I was so excited about on my birthday. I would not have even attempted this when I weighed 240 pounds. We hiked through the jungle, rode a zip line over a lagoon, hiked some more, repelled in to an underground cave filled with crystal clear water called a cenote to swim, hiked some more, climbed to the top of a Mayan Pyramid, hiked some more, and collapsed. Such a fun day! It was definitely the highlight of our trip. I didn’t like looking at the pictures they took of us during the excursion though. I was still by far the biggest woman on the trip, and my fat legs oozing out through the repelling harness was not a pretty sight. I’m not going to let that bother me because I did something so remarkable and I know that with the help of my band I will never be this weight again. It’s only going to get better from here! Kimberly

    Drinking

How long after surgery did you have your first alcoholic drink, and what was your reaction to it?

    Alcohol

Yes before and yes after. However, right now I'm focussed on getting my last 8 lbs off so I'm having a month alcohol free. I love my red wine ... Mmmmmm.... Lap band doesn't mean you have to stop enjoying yourself, just in smaller amounts

    Alcohol pre op?

I should have never posted this since 50% of everyone who responded lacks the comprehension to understand my question. I did not ask about consuming alcohol ON the liquid/pre-op diet. This was directed strictly to PRIOR to starting the diet. Reading all of the posts of food funerals and last hoorahs I'm sure no one on here is perfect, otherwise why are you even in this situation to begin with? I have stuck to my 1600 cal diet religiously over the past few months and my doctor said as long as I stayed within my daily caloric limit she had no problem with me drinking responsibly PRIOR to starting her official pre-op diet. Alcohol pre op?

I don't believe half of the people responding lack comprehension to what you wrote. There is a liquid diet (typically 1-2 weeks prior to the surgery) but surgeons also recommend losing weight from the initial consultation until the surgery date too to shrink the liver, lose fat which gives more room for them to work, show that you are committed to losing weight, lowers your chance of a complication (due to hopefully improved health/fitness, lower weight, smaller liver and more room to perform the surgery, etc.), amongst other reasons. Also, most medical plans require a 3-6 month doctor supervised diet prior to the surgery. You would be in that phase, even though you were not in your liquid phase. I know my surgeon recommended not drinking any alcohol during this period due to wasted calories, bad habits, etc.. Why did you ask this question to people on the internet, most of whom don't have any medical experience, also, criticize them when they answer your question to the best that they thought they understood what was being asked?

    Alcohol pre op?

My doctor said no alcohol 24-48 hours before surgery.
  13. I will use this thread as a confessional. I do need to change my habits for a better me at goal. Being skinny was the secondary goal of VSG. Being healthy was a primary goal. The things I struggled with before VSG is the same thing I struggle with now. I have not posted about my 1 year anniversary back in mid September since I have not had my one year check up. Hoping to provide a full picture, not just before and after pictures. I know what report will say about my health. Here is my partial list of sins. I eat way too fast again. Figured out that if I shove in food fast, I can trick my full signal and get more food in. Friday evening I almost got sick...ARGH I often neglect to take my supplements’. Not enough protein - back on the carbs for the main staple of my diet Still not drinking enough water. Need to drag that cup around. Often mistake thirst for "hunger" and shove in food, usually junk food. I snack often and now since I have had the sleeve - sweets are my thing. Now I have dessert which I could pass on all the time before surgery. So, today I use my sleeve as a reason why I can eat this or that. I can eat junk most of the time and not gain the weight back since it is in limited amounts. In comparision to a drug addict or smoker whose goal is to get away from the addiction completely, I am not able to do this with food. I can not walk away from food forever. Can you imagine telling an alcoholic that you can only have three drinks a day to survive - so choose your drinks well? Or a drug addict that you can get hopped up upon occasion? I still plan my life around food, hoping I make healthy choices most of the time. While your advice would be welcomed, it is really not needed. I know what I need to do. What I need to find is the same resolve that I had to hit goal. My life cannot be spent taking advantage of this beautiful sleeve. Therefore my battle and demons remain before me and beside me. My battle is not with food, but with me. Thank you for allowing me to be honest with myself.

    Unfills for vacation purposes

I've just been on holidays during which I ate out a lot more than usual and enjoyed a bit more alcohol than usual. I also enjoyed far more exercise than usual. I got home and had lost 2kg. I cant see why in the world you'd want to be unfilled and risk gaining. I got to enjoy everything, but not to excess like I would have done in the past. I know I'm one of the lucky ones who can eat anything without a problem, but my quantities were limited. Once we went out for dinner and it just happened to be a night where I was tight. We paid $200 for the meal (there were 7 of us) and I ate nothing more than a bite of it I care more about my weight and health than I do about wasting money int aht sort of situation. Big deal, who cares? I would consider an unfill if I had problems with flying but I dont. I know you were just posing the question, not thinking seriously about it but to consider an unfill for the purposes of digging in on vaction, well that would suggest to me somebody not mentally prepared for the change in lifestyle and not really ready to be banded. Where do you draw the line?. What about Christmas, Easter and all those other occasions? And although the band is YOUR tool and I've always been a strong believer in that, I think that's just not using it properly and I'm not surprised at all that a surgeon would refuse to just unfill you simply because you wanted to eat more. The thing is with the band, its kind of all or nothing but then its all or nothing without the band too if you really want to get control of your weight. People who have been a normal weight all their lives may very well tend to eat a bit more on holidays but you do that with a band too. Your food choices will be different and you'll probably drink more too. But you have to do so in moderation.
  15. I am 8 mos out and I eat everything. Popcorn and nuts. I eat beans, pasta and bread sparingly. It fills me up too quickly. I've posted before and I've received negative comments about my eating habits. But it works for me. I started at 200 and I now weigh 133...and I don't fluctuate much. I eat many times a day, but 4 or 5 bites. I don't log my food or count anything. Maybe I'm being naive or getting cocky...but I've counted and logged food my whole life and I feel free now. I can definitely eat more now. I don't think I've stretched out my stomach. I can eat very little in the morning, but as the day goes on I can eat more. I never drink alcohol, carbonated drinks, or juice. I eat chips, tacos, English muffins and peanut butter. Turkey jerky, nuts, cheese, pizza, Sweets aren't my thing, and if I do eat them, it's a few bites. Don't eat ice cream. I love cheeseburgers (half with one bun). A taquito. Half a piece of chicken and four bites of salad with ranch. A few fries. Sweet potato. No fruit really. I eat what I want when I want...just four or five bites. I would really have to work at it all day and make myself uncomfortable to gain weight. I don't know if this is bad advice, but it works for me. Good luck.

    Alcohol?

You are going to get a myriad of answers on this board about alcohol. They are going to range from YOLO to never again. Your Dr. and your nutritionist are going to weigh in on it as well. I think that the general consensus is to wait 4-6 months even a year in come cases before drinking. Some here start back much sooner than others. There's also a group like myself that has committed to getting as healthy as possible and has decided that I can do without alcohol until the time that I have gotten myself to my goal. Alcohol, for me, was a trigger food. Start with a few cocktails, get some food down, get a few more cocktails in so on and so forth. It's important to know a couple of things, first, you have a lot smaller stomach so the alcohol is going to hit you way faster and reasonably harder than it would otherwise. secondly, alcohol is hard on the stomach in general. You have a pretty delicate sleeve going early on, so the longer you let that heal, the better off you are going to be long term. Lastly, give some thought to why you had the surgery to begin with and try and connect the dots to any habits that you had in the past that might deter your success. If alcohol played a role in that, like it did for me, then would it not be in your best interest to just let it go? Good luck in what ever you decide.

    issues with alcohol after surgery

Something else I want to mention...(non-professional My body hates alcohol. I love it, but my body doesn't use it as just calories taking in. I could have 3 measured drinks and count calories and it would stall my lose or even make me gain. This has been true for the last 25 yrs for me and I know it has something to do with the way my body processes the sugar in alcohol. I can have 2 glasses of wine, literally 4 oz each and my weight is higher for at least 48 hours after. I get puffy and retain fluid. My body just doesn't do well with alcohol in my diet. Every time I have successfully lost weight I have excluded alcohol all together. And when I start to drink again, I start to gain again. I want to mention that I am not a regular drinker. Maybe 1-2 times a month....Just some food for thought

    issues with alcohol after surgery

Sorry you are going through this. Seems food addiction and other addictions can coincide. I have a brother right now over the edge with alcohol and am very, very worried about him. If you check the other sites here, there is a 12 step program for OA and there are other posts related to this issue. Being from a family of alcohol issues, I can see where you are really having a hard time and hope you can find the answers you need.

    Confused

And many an alcoholic and drug addict have probably said the same things. Why should I go to AA? I'll just stop going to the bars. Or I'll avoid person X & Y who want to get high all the time. WLS is not a magical pill that fixes thing. It is a tool to help long term. It's easy to say that I'm going to stick with my diet this time. This time it's going to be different. All those other hundreds of times I tried and failed were practice, but this time will be different! Not saying this to be a smart ass. It's just easy to say this time will be different. I'm sure the idea of surgery has scared some people away, they did stick to a diet, and were successful. It's no different than those that were so sure this would finally be the fix they needed but then end up gaining all their way back. I look at WLS like I would going to an AA meeting. Ultimately it is up to me to make the right decisions in leading a healthy life, but the WLS is a tool to help me be successful. It's not an easy decision, and yes, I went through all the second guessing as well. I had complications with my surgery. Did it suck? Yep. But I don't regret my decision. I worry about things like the loose skin too, but in the end I was more concerned about having a heart attack within the next 5 years because of the extra weight I've been carrying in additional to the other health problems I was facing. I'll take some loose skin over being dead before I'm 50.

Where did I go? Who am I now?

My story is that I was always a toned, fit person. I worked out and lifted weights as well as ran. I was in the military and met my husband in the military so we are/were pretty used to it. Then I got out, we moved (away from my social scene and all my friends), I became depressed and started drowning myself in alcohol and party drugs. I rapidly packed on the pounds and wallowed in self-pity. I then started working on my 'shit'----seeing a counselor---changing social groups to avoid the nightlife and all it's vices---doing some SERIOUS soul searching---and taking appropriate pharmaceuticals for my depression. My life changed. It got better. I got better. But, I was still overweight-----the fat resisted change. Over the next 8 years I became pregnant 6 times giving birth to 4 live (wonderful and beautiful, I must say) babies. Each pregnancy left me with at least an extra 10 -15 pounds. I didn't let the weight "get me down" so to say, because I knew it was for a good cause and my prizes were so rewarding. I respected and loved my body---still do----but knew my vehicle needed a good overhaul---a lift in front, a lift in back, and a new paint job. I have a totally different relationship with my body now than I did when I was younger and skinnier. I like myself better now than I did then. I like my life better now than I did then. I am so much healthier NOW than I was THEN. All that said, I knew I wanted my outside to reflect how I now feel on the inside. I researched the lap-band (and the balloon, and other options) and decided that this one was for me. I was low on the BMI scale and was under the impression that no doctor here in the USA would work on me (I've since become educated by fellow lap-bander's here on this site that there are MD's stateside that work on lower BMI folks) so I went to Mexico. I don't regret my decision one bit! My weight loss has been painfully slow but it is coming off. My group of friends are so complimentary and supportive and I LOVE getting back into my favorite styles. My husband jokes and says that I am now a 'reformed' Rock Star! I adore leather pants, boots, tight tops----everything flashy and funky! The other night I went out to see one of my favorite local bands (talk about a diva rock star----Pinky and the Snakeshakers) and wore tight jeans, a bra cami, and one of my delicious Japanese kimonos---oh yeah, and lime green Fluevog sandals. I felt great! I like my outside reflecting whats on the inside. Granted, I'm not finished yet (don't know if I ever will be).
  21. Before I got banded I went along to a support group. There was a guy there that was really inspiring. He had told by his Dr that he had to do something or he would be dead within 3 months. He had diabetes, alcohol issues and other health problems. He got his band and continued to inspire everyone at meetings. He lived life to the fullest. Went on a number of cruises and was one of the few people that actually lost weight on a cruise. He was so excited when he could fit into a pair of speedos. In total he lost over 60kg. His health improved dramatically. He never ceased to be an inspiration. Sadly he passed away suddenly earlier this year. The positive here is that he did extend his life by over 3 years and he lived those 3 years to the fullest. Without his band he probably would not have managed to see so much of the world and have such a wonderful time.
  22. it's not uncommon to develop some food intolerances after surgery - although they're often temporary. Milk is a common one - and so is artificial sweeteners (especially sugar alcohols - the ones whose names end in -itol (like xylitol)).

    issues with alcohol after surgery

Well from my WW days I know that Alcohol slowed my loss because it makes you retain a lot of Water and is a gateway to food drug. I have 1 drink and I think.... wow those fries wont hurt me... I will just have 5. 33 later I and on my 2nd drink. LOL. So I am abstaining until my vacation in the spring so I can look HOT when I go home to CA to visit family.
  24. I realize this conversation was from a year ago, but I can't locate anymore recent talk. I am almost 14 months post op and having terrible acid/heartburn. I know tomatoes and alcohol contribute, but must I really give them up or take a pill? My surgeon never advised to stay on anything for heartburn or indigestion. About 6 months ago I had 4 attacks that were all pressure and felt like an elephant on my chest. Now it's just the acid and I cannot even sleep lying down. I've Zantac, but everyone on this thread seems to have better luck with omeprazole or Prilosec? Thanks for any advice as I'm finding it difficult to find talk for post op issues.

    4 months post op--disney??

Surgery 6/21, down 40 lbs so far, absolutely no issues with anything so far. Going to Disney end of this month, at the 3 month mark, and also have the dining plan. I plan to enjoy myself but still try to make certain I get enough protein and exceeed my daily water needs. I’m taking my Genepro protein powder and some sugarfree pudding cups (the non-refrigerated ones), so if I don’t feel like I made my protein for the day it’s easy enough to add 10-30g of protein to a cup of pudding before bed. Since you’re with so many others you won’t be wasting food when you can’t finish more than a small portion of your meal cuz they can help out lol. Especially the free dessert with dinner. Enjoy a bite or two, if your tummy can handle it than share with others. Same with the alcohol. I don’t drink but get a wine with my dinners and my husband can enjoy it after I try a sip or two. I’m at least 50-60 lbs own from last trip there a few years ago and looking forward to not worrying about if I’ll fit ok in the rollercoaster seats. Last time missed out on one of them. Stay safe in the storm right now, Good luck with your surgery and have an awesome vacay!!
