Pre-op diet/post-op diet
Bufflehead replied to 8petals's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon requires being on a 48 hr clear diet before surgery. I know I could have Jello, chicken broth, cranberry/apple juice, basically anything clear. Does anyone have suggestions of other things I can consume? Tea, beef broth, miso broth, G2, Vitamin Water Zero, Propel Zero. You can get protein powders that mix well with water -- Unjury chicken soup, Syntrax Nectar fruit or tea flavors. You can buy individual size packets of those, which would probably make sense if you don't have an extended clear liquids diet post-op. What I really need suggestions for is my post-op diet. What are the best things to consume post-op that are filled with Protein? On full liquid phase: protein shakes Puree phase: Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese (Google Eggface ricotta bake for a great recipe), scrambled or poached eggs, refried beans with melted cheese. I made a lot of pureed casserole (minus the high carb ingredients) type things. Basically I would take meat, add a flavorful sauce, puree, put in a tiny little ramekin and heat in the microwave maybe with a little melted cheese on top. So, salmon with dill sauce, chicken breast with marinara sauce & mozzarella cheese, tuna with low fat roquefort dressing & swiss cheese, turkey with peanut satay sauce & jack cheese, ground bison with low carb bbq sauce & cheddar cheese -- you can do whatever works for you. How long was it until you could even try a solid? Everything will depend on the food progression your team gives you. I am sure your dietitian will give you more info as your date gets closer, but if you are curious now, call them up and ask if they can email you a copy of your post-op eating guidelines, or if you can stop by and pick up a copy. My team has extremely conservative guidelines, so I was on full liquids for four weeks, purees for four weeks, and then soft foods (easily cut with a fork) for four months. but how do I check my private messages? Someone messaged me last night, and now I can't find it to respond lol. I use the website, not the app, version of bariatric pal so unfortunately I can't help you here. Hopefully someone else can step in and provide an answer. -
Can I increase my protein this way?
OutsideMatchInside replied to reachbree's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't think there is a limit to how much protein the body can absorb, there is a limit to how much it needs for muscle repair. The rest goes into energy. http://www.quickanddirtytips.com/health-fitness/healthy-eating/know-your-nutrients/how-much-protein-can-the-body-absorb @@reachbree - I still mix some unflavored in my flavored mix. That is just personal taste. I also add a little unflavored to my yogurt. The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery website says... Q: Can I take all of the protein in one dose? A: Protein should be taken in multiple doses, across multiple meals or healthy Snacks. The body cannot absorb more than approximately 30 grams at once. Also, protein is a nutrient that helps us feel fuller, longer. If we try to include Proteins in each of our meals or healthy snacks, we’re less likely to feel hungry when it’s not time to eat. https://asmbs.org/patients/life-after-bariatric-surgery My Dr made very clear that the body can only absorb so much at one time. There is a reason we take Vitamins apart, not just because some of them interact badly with each other. -
Help? What can I do now to make it easier later?
Bufflehead replied to Dinks97420's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
--Get a MyFitnessPal account and a kitchen scale and practice weighing your food and logging it faithfully --Practice not drinking with meals or for 30 minutes after --Find a therapist/behavioral psychologist who specializes in working with weight loss surgery patients and start working on your specific issues and strategies to deal with them --Read all of these boards -- not just the pre-op boards, but the post-op boards, the general discussion boards, the success stories, to learn what you can expect, so you won't be surprised when, for example, you stop losing weight for a couple of weeks when you are 3 weeks post-op, your stomach makes weird noises, or you can eat yogurt more quickly than you thought you'd be able to after surgery. Good luck! -

I didn't puree it. I just chew it very good. I know, bad, but it really is almost liquid before I swallow. I am back today for the first time actually, so a day less than 3 weeks. It went by fast though! I just worked on school work all day and healing. I also walk everyday now. I know it's not much, but it's something! Any good ideas for pureed you have for me? Bc yogurt and cottage cheese will not cut it for 2 weeks, haha. Sent from my SM-N910P using the BariatricPal App

Seeking Buddies 5'2" & Under
dolcegirl replied to ladymacwhiz's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@@AmberMc03 YOU WILL DO GREAT! I'm day 5 and it's not too bad. You can have sf Popsicles and yogurt! I bought strawberry Slimfast shake too. I'm also 5'1" and went in at 199.5. My goal is 115! I'm very busty as I have implants and now all this extra weight over them was starting to give me back problems. Therefore, I knew I needed to do something. I am hoping that this was the answer. Looking forward to being much thinner by my birthday on September 24. I will be 43 years old. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Calling all June '16 sleevers!
gary5862 replied to shrinkingkimber's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have two protein shakes a day. That combined with greek yogurt for breakfast, and 1/4 cup of chicken for both lunch and dinner gets me over my protein goals by a good amount. In two days I have to cut back on my shakes, though. They want me to only have one a day after I start on soft foods. -
@ Yeah, I'm living at home. My mom and I both cook sometimes here and there. I figured beyond just the consistency of hot dogs that them being processed would be a little "hefty" on the sleeve so thanks for the input! I definitely want to get some hummus, I looooove it. Lentils are suggested in my book, I'll try and get some of them and for sure eggs. I'm not a huge fan of greek yogurt though, especially not savory ones, but maybe my taste has changed. I'll have to try it. I do like this one yogurt I get at Aldi's that's salted caramel and honey greek yogurt but they don't always have it. I'm going to go see if they do.

I went protein crazy!
Seastars replied to gettingsleeved1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I totally agree with you on sneaking in unflavored Protein. Pre-op, I'd add half a scoop to lentils, chilis and Soups - basically anyplace you'd add nutritional yeast (except popcorn which I didn't try). Post-op I've been adding it to broth and strained miso Soup, as well as to sugar free Jello. I also like adding flavored nectar powder to plain Greek yogurt and mixing. I'd love to see a line of savory protein powders like Nacho cheese, Curry, Ranch/Onion, Roast Turkey. Added to plain yogurt or even soy milk, they could be a nice change from sweet protein shakes! Now you've got me hungry for another shake! -
Hey everyone - it's been crazy busy here, so I've been off this site for a bit. I'm glad you're having a run of on-plan days @s_suther ! Good going!! Since you asked -- Honestly, I'd think about doubling that Protein (given how your body has adjusted to losing and depending on that protein, it seems unlikely your're converting it to sugar - but I'm no nutritionist!). If so, try to spread it out through the day. It looks like that's not much to run on. (I like adding chocolate Protein powder to nonfat Greek yogurt, sometimes with a bit of SF caramel flavor--it's wonderful! I also like deli sliced Boars' Head Golden chicken as a go-to protein snack with almost no fat or carbs, and since it's moister than turkey it goes down better for me.) My calories are about the same as before, but my nut/trainer is upping carbs slowly as long as I'm still losing. I do 75 carbs, 58 fat, 170 protein and calories end up between 1450 and 1540 most days. A few more carbs might make you feel a little better energy-wise or satiety-wise, but if you're staying keto that may not work. One thing I'd definately say helps is staying very close to the same macros every day. I tried doing that "Staying under X gms" idea, and the fluctuations in carbs caused my body to hold onto fat because it couldn't trust I'd consistently give it all the food it needed as fuel. Maybe try staying right on your 45 g carb goal? I lost a few pounds this month, which is good since a had a week were I had to do dinner meetings four in a row! About killed me, and even though I was careful and planned ahead, and restaurants were nice to tell me portion size, etc., how they cook it varies enough that I know i was way off. Anyway, I popped up to 174, and now am back to 171, so pleased at that today. I've been working my way back down from a vacation gain last year when I just ate whatever junk I wanted for too long (SO not worth it!). I"m still 3 pounds away from being back to my lowest last summer, but I did my measurements today, and they're way better than back then--Hooray! More muscle and less fat. My waist and hips are the biggest areas of loss, which is just fine with me. Good luck breaking your stall, @thecamiraye and glad you're 'accountability-ing' with us. Nice job breaking YOUR stall, @RockinRobin59 ! Funny how our bodies sometimes respond, eh? Hope everyone's doing well this Monday morning. Good to be back on! Kate

Introducing foods to your new stomach.
Lovin2lose posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm just under two weeks post-op. I was operated on here in the states and my post-op diet is as follows. Day of surgery, we're allowed NOTHING at all. No Water, nothing. That sucked. Stage 1: just water (this was the day after surgery) We could only sip no more than 1oz over 1 hour. Stage 2: Clear liquids, sipping no more than 3oz over 1 hour. Then we were sent home on day 3. Stage 3: sugar free & low fat full liquids, sipping no more than 8oz over 1 hour. We're supposed to get in 48oz liquids a day plus 60 grams of Protein. During this stage the doctor approved water, crystal light, coffe/tea, broth, sugar free Jello, sugar free popsicles, sugar free juice, tomato or V-8 juice, yogurt Stage 4: pureed/soft foods. This is where we can introduce things like fish, tuna salad, egg salad, chicken salad, imitation seafood, cheese, cottage cheese ricotta cheese, eggs, baked chicken/turkey. So, I go see my doctor in two days for my 2 weeks post op appointment and this is where he'll advance me to stage 4-pureed foods. Personally, I cannot wait. I'm so sick of drinking and can't wait to taste food again, even though it'll look like baby food. LOL I guess I could get to my question now. Once I start eating again whether it's during the pureed food stage or once I start to actually eat normally again, how long does it take for you to know if what you're eating is going to agree with you? Is this something that you feel immediate or does it take time for your stomach to say, 'NOPE' this ain't happening? -
Artificial Sweeteners: foods without
Oregondaisy replied to 4Sparrow's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have Interstitial Cystitis so I know what you mean about a lot of UTIs. I had a lot of them since I was little and many many more as an adult. The one thing that comes to mind is the Greek yogurt in the black container. It has stevia. It's Okios Tripple Zero. Another thing I like is power crunch bars. Jay Robb also makes Protein drinks with stevia. Most things have splenda and it's hard to find things without it. -
Ready to start mushy food this week

I started puréed food yesterday and I can definitely tell when I'm full. Im having a very hard time getting in 2 ounces. I have to eat 1 ounce and then wait an hour to eat the 2nd ounce. With yogurt I don't have this problem though. I can easily eat 4-5 ounces no problem. It was on my full liquid diet I just finished though so it's definitely different then puréed foods. Long stall and cant break it
KristenLe replied to EmilyJune's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Concentrate on protein, fluids and exercise. I would have protein instead of toast, cereal or oatmeal. Yogurt, eggs, cottage cheese, beans, soft cheese, tuna, egg salad, chicken salad, etc. My plan says eat 5-6 times a day (2-4ozs at that stage). -
Late June Sleeve Buddies?
Seastars replied to Maggie143's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I should probably ask my dietician about it tomorrow. Her materials give goals (for each day of the first two weeks) of 48-64 oz Water (or other noncaloric fluid) and 3-4 Protein Shakes (about 200 calories and 30 grams Protein each). If we hit those we can have sugar-free Jello, SF pudding, broth Soups or plain greek yogurt in small amounts. And then in a summary section it says that will get us to about 700-900 calories [i misremembered, it's not 1000] and 100+ grams of protein daily. I think she will tell me to ignore the calorie count, and just stick to counting water ounces and protein grams. -
I went protein crazy!
kjr2016 replied to gettingsleeved1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've been finding the vanilla and chocolate Protein powders mixed with milk a little too sweet, so I started mixing them with other things. Vanilla mixed with greek yogurt cuts the tanginess and ends up tasting a little like cream cheese frosting (but not as sweet). Chocolate Protein Powder in a SF chocolate pudding was good too. -

Only one hour and fifteen minutes left to eat my salad and drink Protein shake and eat yogurt! Then the nerves settle in as I drink my 8 bottles of Water. I have some work to finish before I'm out on medical leave tomorrow so that should keep me busy. I'm an early riser so I'm worried since I don't have to be at the hospital until 830am. Daily calories allowed and serving size after surgery
cindyw41 replied to volsfan82's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
2oz of a Protein, 8oz of a liquid (yogurt, pudding, Soup, shake exc.) should be your serving size. Eat your protein first, then veggies and if you still have room then a carb/starch. I rarely have room for anything but my protein. Most of the time I can't finish that without feeling satisfied. My calories at this point is 600-800. I'm still in the losing phase. I doubt my surgeon will increase this until I'm maintaining. My target goals are 100 gr protein and 64oz Water. Some don't track calories..just protein, carbs and water. I track to make sure I hit the min calories because I'm still not feeling hungry and I can't rely on my body to tell me to eat. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
If you are having to chew, i dont think that qualifies as pureed, jmho. Greek yogurt, refried beans, scrambled eggs, that type of thing that doesnt require chewing really. Also, you didnt mention how far along you were?

It is all a bit confusing at times, so I can see people getting VERY confused. Some doctors have two weeks of liquid diets post op, not my doc. Day three is puréed and I'm just fine. My doc says no carbs and no tomato sauce, yet people are making chili to purée and mashed potatoes are on their approved list. Nothing nutritious about mashed potatoes. My doc says no milk or yogurt, yet everyone I read has been having yogurt. I asked my doctor about this and he said don't listen or pay attention to what they're all doing cause it's wrong. I assume I should believe him. As much as I'd love to have yogurt or puréed chili. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Anyone have to do post op liquid diet?
MissKay replied to correak's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah I only had to do 2 weeks pre-op liquids, and 2 weeks post-op. I technically don't start purees until Monday, but my nutritionist who works very closely with my surgeon said if I felt ready to introduce some of the pureed items already, I could. I've added in cottage cheese and soft scrambled eggs. The eggs gave me some gas pain, but otherwise I did pretty well with them. That's so strange that they have you hat 4 weeks.... that's a long damn time. As for Protein drinks, get GENEPRO. I mix it in with vanilla almond milk and SF chocolate syrup, and it tastes really good. You can't really taste the protein at all. I've mixed it with broth too. Others have mixed it in with yogurt, applesauce, etc. -
Anyone have to do post op liquid diet?
Daisee68 replied to correak's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
4 weeks post-op is a long time. I had 2 weeks like most. BUT there is likely some reason dr requires it, so I would do your best to stick with it. Is there any chance it includes things like yogurt or pudding? Sometimes, they consider those things in "liquid" diet. You might ask... You really need to find a Protein drink you can stomach. At 1 year post-op, I still have 1 Premier Protein shake per day. Have you tried Premier Protein ready made drinks? The powder I use that I LOVE is Precision Engineered whey Protein Isolate. The vanilla smells heavenly even and the chocolate is amazing. I will add an Orange Crush powder stick (like Crystal Light) to vanilla powder and 2 oz of Fairlife milk and 4 oz of Water and lots of ice. Tastes like Orange Julius! Yummy! I also add PB2 to my Chocolate powder (again with Fairlife milk and water and ice) and it is wonderful. If you haven't bought any yet, get some of the sugar free flavored syrups to add - peppermint mocha, raspberry, pomegranate, salted caramel, etc. The options are endless. This blog has lots of good recipes - http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2007/06/my-favorite-protein-shake-recipes.html. Oh and try the protein hot chocolate in the Bariatric Pal website. I LOVE the amaretto flavor! -
I use boost for diabetics. It has barely any sugar, 16 grams of Protein and chocolate flavour. Very useful for when you are in a hurry in the mornings since I am used to skipping breakfast..For my shakes, I use a spoonful of frozen yogurt with milk and some frozen fruit. English is my 6th language so forgive me if my sentences don't make any sense at times!

Day 2 after surgery..
Loudy227 replied to rimmarrufo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm on day three after surgery today. Today is a lot better than yesterday as far as getting liquids down. I'm just kind of accepting the fact that my belly is sore and feels full but I need to keep getting my liquids in. I also did a two week preop liquid diet and first two days postop were Clear Liquids followed by two weeks full liquids. There will be plenty of time to try new foods later, but now is the time for healing. There's a lot I can try on full liquids, shakes with different added flavors, strained Soups, yogurt, veggie juice, pudding. It will be six weeks before I can have "regular" food, so I'm staying positive because I'm in this for the long haul. Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App -
Ready to start mushy food this week
Bufflehead replied to goosefam's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yogurt and tuna are very different. Yogurt is not dense protein and it tends to slide right through your pyloric valve, thus your restriction is not engaged. Also, at two weeks out your stomach nerves are still healing and aren't necessarily capable of reliably telling your brain that you shouldn't give it any more food. That's why it is so important to measure or weigh a small portion and eat that, and only that, regardless of what physical signals you may or may not be getting. Good luck!
