I never thought low fat was a great idea because it never helped me loose weight pre or post WLS. Carbs are and will always be my enemy. VSG is a tool that works for me because it is much easier to stick to a low carb diet. I do my best to avoid saturated and trans fat. I do low carb but I don't intentionally do low fat. With that said my taste buds are accustomed to some low fat products like skim milk or low fat yogurt. I also prefer grilled chicken to say greasy sausage. However, I intentionally avoid low fat cheese and eat healthy fats like olive oil or nuts.

Ok, V......following up just for you!!! I just got off the phone with my bariatric surgeon. All is well. He told me where the RX said to take on an empty stomach, I just need to eat a little yogurt or something first. He said from here on out that would be the best practice prior to all meds. Gotta head to work. Thanks again for all the great suggestions cause I.....DO NOT.....LIKE BEING NAUSEAS!!!!

More calories = More weight loss? HUH?
numeby2017 replied to JennsJourney's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thankful for this post. I am about 3 months post op. And my loss has slowed down to about 2 lbs a week some none. My NUT told me to increase calories by adding granola to yogurt, eating nuts, 1/2 whole grain English muffins with breakfast etc. I of course looked at her like she was crazy, you want me to add carbs to get up to 1000 calories?? That's how I got where I started. But she said as long as I get my protein, incorporate some veggies and minimal carbs or healthy fats to add calories I should be fine. Especially if I want to start more strenuous exercise routine. I was so hesitant because I am scared if falling into old habits, but I will trust her and the process and try to add more healthy fats and a few carbs here and there and see if it changes things. -
Best Tasting Protein Shake
Clementine Sky replied to charley27's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What blender do you use? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App I love the NutriBullet because it blends so quickly and is convenient. I just pop on a lid and can head out the door. As for protein powders, I really like Unjury's chocolate flavored Protein Powder. I'd add coconut cream to it for an Almond Joy flavor, or PB2 for a Reese's-like treat. Chike's protein powder is also tasty. If there is a Sprout's near you they have unflavored whey protein that dissolves really well into both hot and cold drinks. You can buy it by the weight, so you don't have to commit to a giant tub of it when you just want to sample it. I also liked GENEPRO. Starting about two weeks out I began making smoothies using a yogurt that is high in protein and low in carbs, frozen berries (also lower in carbs) and frozen spinach (the berries mask the flavor, and the consistency is better if it's frozen) rather than using protein powder, and that's what I've stuck with this whole time. -
I only experienced this when I first began lifting. Over time as my body adapted to lifting, the hunger spikes leveled out. Occasionally there are time when I am hungrier than others and that's normal. Even nonWLS folks experience changes in appetite. In that case an extra snack like a Greek yogurt or whatever healthy item you like is fine.

How Do You Stay Cool Without Ice Cream?
provenzee replied to Alex Brecher's topic in Food and Nutrition
I love No Sugar Added frozen yogurt from those places that are like ice cream shops with all the toppings! I just avoid all the candy/cookie toppings and add fresh fruit to it. It's a great substitute for ice cream! I also love making "homemade ice cubes". I take an ice cube tray and add one piece of fresh fruit to each square (I mostly use berries/cherries) and pour sugar free lemonade over it. Tastes delicious when its frozen -
I know I'm posting a bit late in the game, but I thought I'd chime in... @@DahliaIris I am so sorry to hear your news, I hope things get worked out soon so that you can make this surgery happen! As for the pre-op diet, I start that in 3 days, and I'm kinda nervous about it, but I'll make it work. Since I have limited counter space, and don't really want multiple jars of Protein powder cluttering up my kitchen (it's already plenty cluttered up!) I opted to pick up an unflavored Protein Powder. I then went to a local spice shop and collaborated with the sales lady there to find a variety of flavor options that I can experiment with that are both sweet and and savory. There will undoubtedly be some trial and error along the way, but I'm hoping this will open up my options a fair bit. I'll be able to have some Soups, yogurt and SF jello/pudding/applesauce too... I can't say I'm looking forward to getting started, but it'll be worth it if it means getting this surgery done and over with. I'm ready to let this weight go!

What did I sign up for?
KristenLe replied to rebcal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@rebcal First thing - get something to help you poop. That may be a good part of the problem. Also - have you talked to your surgeon about any of this? This doesn't sound "normal" for 3 months out. Maybe they could try you on an anti-nausea med. Have you tried eating soft foods again - greek yogurt, cottage cheese, homemade protein shakes, soup, etc ? I hope you can figure out what is going on because you shouldn't have to live like that. You're not supposed to be sick all the time. Stay strong! -
gaining weight on soft foods
lkingglassalice posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started soft foods this weekend, and have stuck to foods on my plan. The most I have eaten is a 5 oz yogurt, but if I eat something like tuna, I can barely eat 2 ozs. I am sipping on calorie free drinks all day long. When I got on the scale this morning, I had GAINED 2 pounds. Did anyone else experience this when starting soft foods? Do you think I am doing something wrong? I was sleeved 6/7/16, and between the preop doet and the sleeve I have dropped 35 pounds so far. -
I had surgery on the 13th as well. Congrats. I've been eating yogurt too. How much is too much? Sent from my SM-G930V using the BariatricPal App apparently the 6oz. I dont do it all at once but almost!

Pre-Op Diet Fears...how did you do it?
judanna77 replied to fancypants67's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was scared of the pre-op diet as well, and it truly did suck for the first few days, but then it got better. It still wasn’t fun, but it is survivable. One thing that helped me really stick to it was that I had had an abdominal ultrasound as part of my pre-op tests, and so I had hard evidence that my liver was “mildly enlarged”. Knowing that even though the diet sucked, I was making my surgery safer helped me to stick with it. Another thing that helped me was looking into all the scientific studies that I could find about doing a pre-op liver-shrinking diet. There weren’t too many I could find (and the ones I could were mostly about gallbladder surgery), but I could see that there was a measurable benefit to the diet in terms of a shorter surgery time. I think the notion that being nervous about going through the pre-op diet means that you aren’t ready for surgery is misguided. It may be true that some people aren’t ready for the changes that go along with surgery, but the fact is that the pre-op diet is hard, and I think it is normal not to want to put yourself through that, even if you are ready for the huge changes that come along with surgery. I was hungry and tired and had a horrible headache for the first few days of the pre-op diet. The good news is that the post-op diet is way easier. Another good thing about all the research I did was that it really brought home the point that there is no one “magic” pre-op diet. The studies found that there wasn’t a measurable difference in liver size reduction from diets between 600-1100 calories a day, and ranging in length from 1-4 weeks. I know I’m in the minority here, but I don’t think that you have to follow your surgeon’s plan exactly in order to be successful. I think that part of being an adult is making responsible choices, and I think it is fine to make the choice to modify your surgeon’s plan to something that will work for you, provided that it still fits within the overall nutritional goals. For instance, my surgeon’s pre-op diet plan called for 1,000 calories a day, coming from only Protein shakes and Protein Bars, with less than 20 grams of net carbs total per day. Instead of following this plan, I made my own plan which included the same 1,000 calories / <20g carbs per day, but instead of shakes/bars, I got most of my protein from chicken breast, cod, and greek yogurt. I also included lots of vegetables to help keep me feeling full. It was way easier for me to stick to this plan than it would have been to stick to only shakes and bars, and my surgeon said my liver looked great. -
Pre-Op Diet Fears...how did you do it?
WLSResources/ClothingExch replied to fancypants67's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You're wailing like a banshee over two weeks out of a lifetime. If you believe that you can't stick to liquids for all of two weeks, are you capable of changing your eating habits and food choices for a lifetime? You're the one who has your pre-surgery instructions in hand. If lists of "'light' foods" are included, fine, go for 'em. If not and someone responds that he was permitted yogurt or other items, you can choose to follow your instructions or change surgeons. Bariatric surgery requires adult thinking and behavior. You're the one who must make the determination. -
Pre-Op Diet Fears...how did you do it?
SalOdyssey replied to fancypants67's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
What does your plan allow? I did an all liquid shakes/broth diet for 2 weeks. Days 2-4/5 were HELL. Stomach rumbling, slight headache. Do your best to stay occupied, and remain focus. It is a large hill to climb, but you can get there. My plan allows for sugar free Jello, pudding, light yogurt, cream of wheat/oatmeal, and 1-2 cups veggies. Stay Strong @@fancypants67!! -
So i received my pre op diet instructions and im terrified!!! I have NEVER been able to fast or do a liquid diet for more than a day...HOW am i gonna do this for TWO WEEKS?!?! Im more afraid of this than the surgery itself! Any tricks you used to help get through... Or were there "light" foods you could eat to keep you satisfied (ie: sugar free greek yogurt)? This feels like i am about to climb Everest.

I had surgery June 13th. I went into the surgeons office because my incisions weren't looking good to me. Not only were my incisions ok I weighed. I went from 330 June 13th to 317 today! Feeling good about the weight loss but I did find out I'm eating too much yogurt!

Getting frustrated
becomingmandikaye replied to Lizardlady's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm in almost the same boat as you (except I can't have yogurt or jello). I've found GENEPRO to be a game changer. I strained some chicken and stars soup last night and added Genepro to the broth. It was 4 oz of broth with 30g of Protein in it, and it tasted wonderful. I went down the soup aisle and picked up any soup that seemed like it would have a flavorful broth after straining. I also have sugar free popsicles, and I did get some Luigi's Italian Ice in lemon (not sugar free, but I'm having issues getting calories in, so I thought why not). Good luck to you! -
You shouldn't feel any restriction with drinking, that is normal. Liquids go right through your pyloric valve, as will runny type foods like yogurt. Your nerves are probably still healing after surgery, so for more solid foods, if that is what you are eating (you don't say what sorts of things you are eating in your post), you need to carefully measure or weigh your small portions and eat only your measured portions. My guidelines for early stages were: puree stage: no more than 3 tablespoons of food. Soft food stage: no more than 3 ounces of food. Also, probably good to get rid of the idea of looking for the "full" feeling. Eating until we are "full" is what made us all obese. Stick with a carefully measured small portion of food and look for satisfied, i.e., no longer hungry, not "full." "Full" means you are stretching your capacity and that is a road you do not want to go down. Good luck!

Unflavored protein powder
AmberMc03 replied to stayfit4life's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I use Herbalife Personalized Protein Powder. It gives an extra 5 grams of protein per tablespoon (up to 4 Tbsp per day). I mix it in my Herbalife Protein Drink mix, yogurt, cottage cheese, Soup, etc. Anything liquid where it can be stirred in! It's the boost I need to reach my protein goal each day. -
I called the Dr. And he's on vacation and his staff told me to do what my paper says. I'm doing it. I brought grape juice and diet frozen yogurt in I tryed cream of wheat put its to painfully. I can only drink broth and all Water substance. I'm suppose to be on faze 3 I'm still on faze1. He said he would take it slow with me. I feel like there is something wrong. I'm going to be 50 in Dec 8th I wanted to look good for my kids. I'm tired of being the mom that can't get anywhere. Plus I think my bipolar depression is getting to me. I need a buddy if someone will have me???? Sent from my SM-G930V using the BariatricPal App

This is probably more of a vent than anything else. I'm sure I'm not the first and I know it's not the end of the world but I'm starting to get very frustrated at the things I'm "allowed" to eat right now. I'm getting sooo sick of the same 3 flavors of Soup (cuz I can only have 98% fat free CREAM soup) and the same broth and the same non fat yogurt mixed with sugar free jelly and some pudding and Jello in between. I can't even tolerate the Protein drinks anymore. I'm on day 8 now (including surgery day) and I have only had 1 full Protein Drink since. I couldn't stand the taste of the others even though pre-op they were fine. I was ok at first but now it's getting worse. Instead of 3 flavors of cream soup, I can no longer tolerate cream of mushroom (it WAS my favorite of the 3). It now tastes disgusting to me post op. Maybe I'm just more irritated because I already had to do the liquid diet twice pre-op (they ended up pushing back my date the last day of my liquid diet the first time so I had to do it again for when I was rescheduled). Whatever it is, I feel extremely crabby and like my will to keep going is slowly being broken down. Anyone have any suggestions? What helped you through the 2nd phase (days 3-13) and farther along? I'm having a hard time finding things that even sound appealing that will give me the protein I need and stay within the boundaries of the post op diet. Diet is full liquids: Blended Soups yogurt Protein Drinks pudding jello Water broth

I would skip it entirely. Grab a yogurt or at least stick with carb smart ice cream. Give it a few minutes to melt a little then whip it up to soft serve consistency yourself. Getting past the cravings is a huge part of the battle. Don't give in!
