    soon to be banded

I don't have a date for surgery, but by June 9 will have finished all the pre-op consults, etc. I will just need insurance approval which should not be a problem as I have BC BC federal and the surgery is covered. I am going on vacation mid-june and out of town for work the last week in June. I hope I can have the surgery after that in July. I will find out probably by mid-june. I am ready. My only problem seems to be that now that I have decided on surgery my appetite is through the roof...did that happen to anyone else? Good luck with your surgery. sunny

Today I start my Liquid Diet (Day 1)

I started mine Friday. I have 3 weeks on mine. It gets bad for me at night around dinner time. My 2nd and 3rd were not fun. My nutritionist says that eating some broth with regular sodium can help the first few days you get a headache. Good luck! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    The Pre Op diet

I just finished 2 weeks of Optifast and after the first couple of days - I got to liking it I really only lost 8 # in 2 weeks and was certainly hoping for more but had a lot of stress in this last week as we had a death in the family. Today I will be banded - wish me well.
  7. I'm so excited. I am schedule for my surgery on November 12th. I will be out of work for 2 weeks and I can't wait. Let me give you a little back ground information. I'm 41, BMI of 40.5 with no co-morbidities. I have been overweight since I was 10. Tried every diet out there including a doctor supervised liquid diet and nothing works.. or I should say it kinda works but I can't keep the weight off. I looked into getting banded last year but that is when I wanted to try one last ditch effort on my own. Hence the liquid diet. I lost 50 lbs but immediately started to gain it back. I'm sick of being overweight and unhealthy. I want to feel good... and I just don't right now. I feel like a beached whale! :w00t: So I work at a hospital as a CNA on third shift, go to school for Respiratory Therapy and I'm also doing this. I have alot of my plate (no pun intended ) I am going to be so happy to have my band done and I am looking forward to the new ME! Wish me luck.

    Week 3 Side pain

I was banded on october 13th and had a very shar pain under my left ribs. Almost hurt to breath. Went to my surgeon and he said that he kind of tacked the tubing in place under there and it nay be causing some rubbing/inflammation and it should go away shortly. Yep 3 1/2 days later and it was better. Maybe that could be similar to yours? Hope it goes away soon.
  11. Hello all you banders out there. I was banded two weeks ago Saturday June 28th I am doing great and I am down 38lbs not including my pre op diet this is all after surgery. I'm feeling full after 1/2 cup of good high Protein food. I'm on mushies and lots of Beans and tofu and lentils. Downfall my cucumber dip but has lots of protein. Cottage cheese is my other favorite for the week. eggs and many other things. Of course the baby bullet is perfect for me. I love it. Right size and blends great. I have not had a fill or any exercise with my plan. I will after I am 6 weeks out. I hope all your bands are working too. I wish you the best luck on your journey. No sugar, no soda and I'm following my plan to a tee. I haven't cheated or feel tempted yet. Hope your day is well tomorrow. Take care Kayleena Wa state age 29
  12. So going through all my paperwork from my surgeon, I find that I will not be on an all liquid diet 2 weeks pre op. My diet will have 2 protein shakes a sensible dinner along with 3 snacks throughout the day. Dinner is a 4oz meat with 2-3 cups of veggies and the snacks are 1cup veggies or a single serving of my choice of dairy product like yogurt or cottage cheese. Anyone else have a pre op diet that was NOT all liquid?

Two weeks po op doing great

38 pounds in two weeks? I did not think that it was possible to loose over two pounds everyday for 16 days. Seriously?

Gout and the pre op diet

I had a problem with gout about six weeks after surgery. My uric acid level was ok but still reared it's ugly head. My Pcp gave me a prescription for Sulindac and the pain cleared up in 24 hours. It's a Nsaid so the bariatric office wasn't too happy but I'd have done anything to get rid of the pain. Haven't had a problem since. Good luck.
  15. Hi! My name is Roz, I am a 43 year old mother of 3 from NY. I had my surgery on July 20, 2011with Dr. Vamulapalli at Montefiore Medical Center. My surgery went well but I had to stay an extra day in the hospital because I wasn't able to drink enough liquids. On surgery day I was 248 and today, a month later I am 223. I thought that i had prepared myself for life after surgery but it is nothing like I anticipated. All of the sugar free drinks that I loved while preparing for surgery now leave a weird metal taste in my mouth and I was even having trouble with water and protein. There was a week that I threw up everyday, but I think that I may have been eating too fast and once I drank a little to soon. Because I could only eat about an once every few hours without the protein in between my puree stage has been extended. I'm still not eating verymuch but I can drink water now. I haven't lost any weight in the past 2 weeks or so so I'm a little scared. I worked out a little last night and that went well. I'm just really nervous and have not idea what is going on. I hope things get better.
  16. I lost 28 pounds pre-op most of that like 24 pounds was before the 14 day liquid diet which I only made it about 9 days with full liquids. I feared that liquid diet like the devil. So I started eating less about 3 months prior to surgery. I started having protein shakes for breakfast and lunch (ensure max protein) and I would only eat dinner. Now when I got hungry at times during the day I would have a banana or cottage cheese. Once you put your mind to it, you can do it! Good luck on your journey!
  17. Not hard but wont be fun I am doing this for my x wife as we speak she is getting it done end of May Since i have a nurta girl who handles me here is her plan Gallons of Broth, she has a band on he wrist and has to move 5 miles a day, Lucky she hits that easy at work, She eats small portion and low calorie food 6 times a day. For example today she will be eating chunked chicken, veggies two shakes and grapes. But she can sip and drink broth all day. She hates it and is miserable but she realizes the rewards seeing me. Going to prep her food today for the next three days here is it for dinner and lunch - Breakfast for her is a yogurt and shake. I will make two of each and she can mix and match them up - Goal is to keep her under 900 calories a day. Not easy because she cheats at work. and If tired blows the day with the Starbucks drive thru suicide coffee creations. 1. 7 oz salmon cauliflower rice and grapes 2. 7 oz skirt steak Avocado and asparagus and fruit cup 3. Chicken sausage one link, Brown fried rice with egg and tons of veggies I am professional trained in the kitchen - Use a App to track your calories and be careful with the sauces, seasonings and oils. You can have a healthy piece of fish and ruin the healthy side with a glaze or sauce!
  18. I would suggest working on cutting the soda out since you can't have carbonated drinks after your surgery for a few months (though my surgeon said it's not wise to ever drink it again as it'll re-stretch your stomach, which leads to weight re-gain). My surgeon didn't require me to lose any weight before my surgery but I lost 64 pounds in the 8 months leading up to my surgery (21 in the first 3 months). I did an elimination diet thing since I had to wait a minimum of 6 months before they could even seek approval for a surgery date because I wanted to prepare myself for how I would be eating for the rest of my life. I don't want to get back into bad habits. I never want to get back to being almost 400 pounds (at my heaviest I was 389 pounds). I cut back on my portion sizes with no seconds. Of course cut out fast food (other than salads). I cut out soda, then rice, pasta, bread, potatoes, and beans in that order. And then just maintained. Cauliflower rice is a good rice replacement and G Hughes makes a sugar free terriyaki sauce that makes for good stir fry (also makes an awesome bbq sauce which is also sugar free and great for chicken). Cauliflower pizza is surprisingly good and really the only difference I notice is that it doesn't crisp like bread. Whisps are a brand of cheese crisps they sell at Walmart which make for good croutons or chips and are low carb and delicious (Asiago and pepper jack cheese ones are my person faves followed by parm and then cheddar, though the cheddar are best dipped in salsa). And if ice cream is hard to give up they sell a low carb brand called CarbSmart which is made by Breyers. I also had 1/4 cup of peanuts 2-3x a week for snack. These are just what I did. Everyone's bodies work differently so I don't know what will work for you. I wish you the best though!
  19. I get my taxes done at H & R Block. I called them last week and asked them if lap band is considered a tax write off. She said it is as long as you have a dr's. note. Anyone had experience with this? Did it help at tax time? I haven't even talked to my PCP yet, but plan to soon.
  20. First and foremost, Happy Friday! When I started this journey at 6'4" 380 lbs I never thought I'd get approved and just kind of went through the paces. When I learned about the 3 mo waiting period I figured it would be a good time to just endulge on everything I would potentially be giving up in the future. Month one I gained almost 10 lbs. I realized how stupid this was and that I'm doing it for all the wrong reasons! So, 4th of July I lit a fire under my a** and said that I WILL lose 20 lbs by my Pre-op shake diet (hoping to lose another 10 on the 14 day plan). Well I don't start the Pre-op for another 30 days and today I weighed 349! Now I have readjusted my goals to lose 50lbs by my surgery date. I can't believe how easy it was to lose 30lbs in two months when you have the right motivation! So here I go on part two of this, 10 lbs in the next month then 5-10 lbs on 14 day Pre-Op!!!!
  21. I'm convinced I'm making the right decision to have surgery although I'm researching just to make sure for myself the sleeve is better for me than Roux-N-Y. I'm the type to over-research and laughingly ask myself "are you SURE you know what your about to do to yourself?" My PCP is well versed and Mayo trained. He went to a Harvard Symposium last Summer that really focused on long-term gut hormone changes w/ RNY as well as long-term safety data, which leads him to recommend RNY whereas my Surgeon feels Sleeve would be a good fit for my specific body type but will do whatever I am more comfortable with. (FYI I'm 38,M, 6'2" and 298 with sleep apnea and edema in my legs). My research and meeting w/NP at bariatric clinic indicates the Sleeve is pretty comparable to RNY when it comes to hormonal changes and the Sleeve seems to make better sense than rerouting all my internal plumbing and dealing with nutrient deficiency, although I am concerned with the lack of long-term data for the sleeve. I was wondering: How many of you have heartburn? Was it only short-term or is it a case of being on a PPI for life? Do any of you have dumping syndrome with the sleeve? (some research says it's possible) Have any of you had any complications out of the norm/ not easily resolved? IS anyone aware of any studies with Long-term efficacy of the sleeve (5+ years out?) I'm excited about having surgery, but it's a life-altering experience and I want to make sure I'm making the right choice with the sleeve over RNY. Thanks for any input you can share!
  22. Thanks for the support! I cut to 1500-1800 calories a day and eliminated all bad foods. I try to follow high Protein low carbs and pay close attention sodium. I only drink Water and mio and try to drink 2 gallons a day. I go to the gym 3 times per week and do 60 min of cardio making sure I keep my heart rate in the fat burning zone. Basically I eat foods/recipes that we can have post op so I can get used to eating that way but will be ok if I need to cheat. I'm also kind of weird that I LOVE Protein shakes lol. I also have been making a lot eggfaces recipes so I can get used to cooking that way.
  23. Surgery is scheduled for Tuesday at 9am. I am planning on getting everything i need for the next two weeks. Anyone have things they had and couldn't live with out or things they tried and didnt work. I am so glad i joined this forum. So nice to talk to people who have been through this and i dont feel so alone.
  24. I am brand new to this forum. I have been researching the band for a few weeks now after my last doctor visit. I have to say, I am already so glad I found you all! I have been reading for hours, and all I can say is WOW, and THANK YOU! I have been feeling so hopeless in a time when I should be so full of joy...I am 24 years old and married the love of my life just over a year ago. Just before that, however, I found out that I had type 2 diabetes. What a blow that was, and is everyday. I have always struggled with my weight for as long as I can remember and I am so tired of it. I have dieted and exercised for years, and now that I am completely insulin dependant within one year, my doctor and I are trying a weight loss rx (pills). Nothing lost. It has been almost 4 months and I have not lost a single pound. I have NO self confidence at this point in my life and it is really putting stress on my new marriage. I know there is a long road ahead of me before I can really move forward with the band, but after reading what you have all posted, I finally feel like there is hope. I will be discussing the band as a possibility with my Endo on Monday and I am very excited. I am a little concerned about how people with diabetes do with the band. Is the diet the same? Any severe lows? I just have so many questions, and no one to ask...until now I am hoping...Thank you all so much for sharing and supporting. I would be curious to know if there are others with diabetes with the badnd who would be willing to share. Thank you all, so sorry for the long post, I promise I will be good from now on! Thanks!!
  25. What clear Protein drinks did you all use? They suggest one for us but I forgot to write it down and it smelled like it looked, plasticy! I thought I would be able to use Premier Protein but it isn't clear. Suggestions please! Have to stalk up in the next week!
