    Holiday Surgery

Although I had my surgery in February - I hosted my husband's three day family reunion not long after my surgery. I cooked, baked cakes, bought bakery goods, etc - and served food throughout the three days. I had decided before the surgery what I could eat and when, and just set my mind to it - with little or no problems. I sat at the table with the family - ate my meals - and talked up a storm with folks I hadn't seen in a year. Everyone knew I had gone through the surgery, and eveyone was supportive. Looking back on the reunion - it was a lot of fun and I have great memories of it - and I don't remember any feelings of deprivation. Once, years ago, I was on the modi-fast diet. For nine months, I mixed powdered Protein mix into smoothies (no calories added except the protein powder) and ate nothing but smoothies and broth. I went through Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations with the family. My sister and law and I cooked the whole shebang for both celebrations. She was suffering from really bad inflammatory bowel syndrome at the time - and all she was eating was mashed potatoes. She had her potatoes, and I had my smoothie and my broth. We had a great time during those holidays. It really came home to both of us that the celebration of the holiday with the family is about so much more than just eating a great meal. It is about family and friends, and sharing accomplishments, and catching up on what people are doing. Both holidays have much deeper meaning than just a gift exhange and a calorie festival. The important thing is making up your mind before hand, and making a plan. Then - you just do it. It got to the point that it really didn't bother me. Good luck with your surgery. If you do go through the holidays on the pre-op diet or just after surgery - my thoughts and prayers will be with you.
  2. I have my psych evaluation on 3/10 and last nut appointment on 3/12... insurance said it could take 3 days to 3 weeks to approve in patient taking longer. How long did it take for your approval how long of a wait for surgery date? I want to have it in April or at least by mid May is that realistic? I had a full abdominal radical hysterectomy last June I'm assuming that the pain will be similar, anyone have both and have pain comparisons? I wish I was more patient person
  3. I haven't experienced that yet, but one of my friends who had this done told me that happened to her. I think it's a thing, like the 3 week stall. Happens to a lot of folks.

    8 weeks post foods

Not sure on the corn. I have had it in vegetable soup and I am 8 weeks out too. How are you doing weight wise? I have lost 23 in 8 weeks which I thought was kind of slow.
  5. I had the same thing happen! Hallelujah, I wasn't crazy! At exactly week 4 (I had a terrible day the day prior) I was being careful getting ready in the morning then I bent down suddenly because I dropped my phone and then I heard like a snap or something with a slight pain and thought "oh great, another terrible day in store" but I ended up working a full day with zero pain... I don't know what it was other than it was a weird feeling and I hoped I didn't hurt myself too bad but it was a blessing. Since that day I've been pain free.

    Post nasal drip

Your nose drips, because your vagus nerve has been stimulated through the action of eating. If you sneeze, get hiccups, your nose drips, it is generally an indicator that you have eaten enough and you should stop. Don't fear, it won't last for too long. Mine went at about the 6 week mark, I think.

4 weeks to go, what shoukd i be doing?

Well the foods you need will depend on your surgeon's guidelines, but Protein powder is probably a must. Soup broth, sugar free Jello, and sugar free popsicles are probably going to be on there as well since they are pretty standard. Get a good blender and a good food processor if you don't have one. Depending on your surgeon's recommendations, you will move to pureed foods a couple to few weeks after surgery. Buy extra baby food! You and your little one might have the same dinner at night! I would try to focus more on the mental side of it though. Think and plan how you are going to do liquids when other people are eating (i.e. going to a birthday party or family cook-out). Start to wean yourself of caffeine now if you drink soda or coffee regularly. Start exercising now. Try to practice not drinking while eating. These are some things that will help in the long run.

    Newly Sleeved

Solids already? I know every doctor is different, but nothing I read advised solids in the first week. My f/u is Monday, and I'll be able to move onto runny oatmeal and grits. Check with your doctor to be sure you are not moving too fast.

I also have a desk job. You can ultimately take a week and be fine. I took 3 weeks just because I could. That was the max for my doctor to keep me out of work. I went to the gym the same week of surgery but that was only to walk very slowly on the treadmill... walking makes the pain so much better. I love ZUMBA but did not resume until 5/6 weeks out. My Dr. Said I could start light strengthening at 3 weeks. You don't want to do anything that could damage your healing stomach. You will not be able to lift him after surgery, the length of time I'm unsure, but if I had to guesstimate I'd say 3 weeks. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  13. I was sleeved on Jan 24th 2012, Weighed 200, 30 yrs old. I'm wondering about post op long term ease or effects/troubles. I know we all recover differently - But I seem to be having a very EASY RECOVERY. I Was walking right after surgery, didnt take pain meds until bedtime & that was to put me to sleep not so much for pain. I do understand that I am still in the begining & have not tried very hevy & dense foods yet, but it's almost as though I have not had surgery. I dont get hungry (that's only happened 3x's) I do have a fair amount of reflux, I sleep with 6 pillows propping me up (Doctor upped my dose of protonix 1 in AM & 1 in PM) I have strength & energy. From day one - I can consume 40 oz of liquids (Water, Isopure, & Powerade) Two weeks out - I can have a full snack size pudding without any trouble, a full packet of cream of wheat etc. I have lost 15 pounds already ! My biggest troubles have been - Reflux No bath, shower only Belly button hurt pretty bad for a while Didnt use the bathroom till day 14 - But wasnt in pain because of that I got really hungry, 3x's !!!!! Thats it As you can see these are not really troubles - I'm so Thankful On the other hand - I read complete HORROR stories about this surg. One of my closest friends is going thru it now. She is 6 months post op, went in to hospital last week with fever, has a small leak, stint didnt work, she has pneumonia, a drain, a pic line. Now is on feeding tube and had another surg this AM to make a second passage to her small intestine because of the pressure inside of her new sleeve ????? I dont understand any of that, all I know is - Anything is possible. I am now scared to death for my recovery & my friends. I understood the risk prior to surgery, but now wondering..... Is it really possible to have this easy of a recovery or am I about to get slammed with loads of complications ? Did any of you have it this easy, I really need to know.
  14. I'm 3 1/2 months post op down to 165 from 227. This week I have really gone back to bad habits. I've been snacking on carbs at night and not exercising. I need to get back on track and just need some encouragement. Thanks!

    Need some support

62 pounds in 3 1/2 months?? Wow! I can't tell from your showing information how far you are from goal (I suggest you add more information like what kind of surgery you had, your goal weight, your height, etc.), but regardless of how close you are to goal, that is a very rapid weight loss for 3 1/2 months. I'm five months out and have lost only about 50 pounds since surgery, with no weight loss in more than two months. Okay, you are aware that you have made some choices this week that aren't in keeping with your overall weight loss goals. All is not lost. Here you are asking for help and support, so there's a pat on the back for that. So, what else is going on in your life that is keeping you from your exercise goals? The carbs one can be remedied by getting them out of your environment so that they are not there to reach for. Perhaps, your body is reacting to such a drastic weight loss? (and maybe so are you?) and wants to put the brakes on for a minute? You are doing so great with your weight loss. You've come a long way in a short time. Enjoy it. Remind yourself of why you opted for surgery and what your overall goals are. And have a few sips of Water before choosing a snack that isn't in keeping with what you had planned. Forgive yourself this moment. Tale a deep breath. And continue. You are doing great!

    Post op diet experience

The first 10 days were liquid only and then onto pureed foods. At 30 days I started on soft foods which lasts until 12 weeks out. I'm nearly 8 weeks out now and still can't manage most meats and canned fish (fresh fish is ok).
  18. I first want to give a shout out to JennJitters for inspiring me to write this blog. I saw a blog she put out where she listed all the things she wanted to do when she lost the weight and I wanted to do the same thing. I am one week post op today and I wanted a list of things that I could look back on in 9 months or a year and say "yes! I did that" You don't have to read all the way through, It will probably be a fairly long list because there are allot of things I want to be able to do. This is mostly just for me but I am willing to share it because I know that you all probably feel the same way about most of these things... Learn how to rock climb Hike and summit any mountain I feel like (I love the Olympics) Go horseback riding and not feel like I'm killing the horse Have children and be able to play with them Be in shape for the first time in my life Walk into a room and not think everyone is staring at me because I'm big Have my first ever Valentines Day date Take the stairs not wishing there was an elevator Be able to get cloths at any store without wondering if they have my size Ware cloths in the single digits Be confident in myself Fit in the rides at the fair.. I love rides! Ware a bikini and feel good about it Learn how to snowboard Be able to buy shews that are not "wide" Be able to ware high heal shoes for more than 20 minutes without being in pain Sky dive! Oh yes I really want to do this! lol Have a man pick me up Not be controlled by food Eat to live not live to eat Buy longerie and feel good wearing it Be able to have pretty panties that are not hidden under a roll Be able to share cloths with my sister (she has the coolest cloths!) Take full body pictures and not hate them Have only one size of cloths in my closet (not 5 different sizes depending on what diet I am on this week) Be comfortable in a normal size sleeping bag Go to the gym and not be self conscious To be able to fit comfortably on an airplane To be able to do a hand stand... why not? To be able to do advanced yoga Get a tattoo Fit in a playground swing without hurting my hips To feel sexy Now lets see how long it takes to mark off a few of these
  19. Hi Everyone! I'm Jason and I'd like to join the group. Here's the twist. I was banded in December 2009. Issue is that it was completely devoid of any saline and was never filled until 2 days ago. The surgeon believed waiting 6 months before the first fill and in that time I lost my job and also my insurance. I'm thankful that I found a new job last summer and I love it, but it's a small company and the insurance covers NOTHING regarding the lap bands, not fills, not the doctor's visit, not even the cup of Water they give you when you walk out the door. So, I'm finally filled. I have the "big" lap band (14cc's I think) and he put 5.5 cc's in there under a fluroscope. He said with that, I should feel very uncomfortable if I continue to eat like I've been. 2 nights before I went to a Sushi buffet and closed the place down. I've had ZERO restriction and could eat unlimited amounts of anything. Right now I'm on yogurt and pudding and tomorrow I can start with blended stuff. (or just scrambled eggs since there's NO WAY I'm blending food) Sad thing is that the day of surgery I weiged 290. The post op, mostly liquid and no carb diet brought me down to 251 at my lowest in March 2010. As of 2 days ago I was 319. That's a gain of 68 pounds since surgery. Needless to say, I'm ashamed. I've been able to save up over the last year and have found a new surgon who will take credit cards so I'm paying for follow up myself. This is motivator #2 or 3 for me. So for all intents and purposes, it's like I was just banded but worse because I don't remember the protocol very well. I found a new surgeon. I finally have Fluid in my band, and I'm scared to death of what lies ahead. The new sugeon's support groups start up again in 3 weeks so this site is all I've got. Please adopt me. I have to succeed. I'm 36 years old, fat, diabetic. have apnea and a 3 year old daughter I want to be around for. Help....please. Thanks Jason

    I'm so nervous

Try not to get yourself all psyched out about pain and gas. I had 0 gas pains, and the physical pain just felt like I did a hundred stomach crunches. I did have some nausea but it was from the pain pump I was on, once they switched me to percocet pills, no more nausea. I was super anxious leading up to surgery, it was over quickly, and now 5 weeks out on to this new journey. Sent from my SM-N920V using BariatricPal mobile app

    Back to Work!!

The main thing for me was feeling tired. I guess that's due to the anaesthetic mainly. Luckily I told them that I had to do light duties and they were fine with that. Now that I'm 5 weeks out I'm pretty much OK. All the best for your return and stick to the lean chicken salads once you're allowed solids as I imagine that the temptation will be tough!

    VSG Mentor?

I'm soooo glad I found this thread! I'm getting my surgery date next week (eek!) and I'm super nervous about a support system. All of my friends are thin (I'm not telling them about the surgery) and my family isn't being very supportive. Would anyone be interested in being my VSG mentor? I'd love to have someone to talk to who understands :-)
  23. I didn't really feel normal until sometime a little after the 6 week mark. Since you're about there, hopefully it happens soon. I got my first energy boost at about 2 1/2 months. The last two weeks have been nice!
  24. Well, I know there is a bottom limit, so if she has mentioned it, make sure you stay above. For me it was above 40 when I went to get approved for the surgery. After that I could drop as much as I wanted. But I got approved 13 days (my surgery got moved up by 4 weeks because there was an opening and everything but insurance was approved at that time.) Thank you. My motivation has always been to prevent another back surgery, which I did. Now I need to find another motivation to pull myself together a little. I have been slipping a little lately. I do have extra skin. It might not look like ut, but it's there, especially on my legs. I know I have been lucky, considering I'm close to 100lbs and have no overhang. I'm up and down on my kcal, I have also been up and down with tracking lately. I'm anywhere from 1100-1600 I think. Today is a high day of over 1500 if I eat everything I have put into myfitnesspal. I believe one key to my success is that I meal prep. It gives me less options to stray into eating unhealthy stuff. So do you know when you'll have surgery?
  25. I’m in Washington my surgery is on the 24th as well. My pre op as been going well. Protein shakes and one meal a day. Have protein and veggies with legumes. I prepare my meals for the week on Sunday mostly fish because I don’t eat meat. How’s yours going? “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
