Summer 2018 Surgery Buddies Check In Here!
Frustr8 replied to Ylime's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
And which comes first the chicken or v the egg and how far apart should they be spaced? This gets my mind off of my" When Am I Going To Get a Date" blues and on to a worse problem. than my bitsy one. I would say space them at least couple weeks apart. As long as your Bariatric Surgeon and Anesthesiologist have,no,problem with your breathing problem, I say Bariatrics first, ENT 👃second.👍 -
HOLY COW! Is this Dumping?
Biddy zz 🏳️🌈 replied to Little Kansas Kitty's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Actually I hate to say this but I didn’t have much pain with dumping. But 20 mins of real pain both sides at the bottom of my ribs - like really painful - does remind me of gallstones! I had my gallbladder out nearly 4 weeks ago. Not uncommon following bariatric surgery, but usually later after a chunk of weight loss. Fats set off my gall bladder. Sugar set off the dumping. But that is only a rough guide! Gallstones do show up on an ultrasound... keep a good food record so you can see what the triggers are. Glucose syrup - sounds like a likely dumping culprit... -

I used Acadiana Bariatrics in Lafayette. Dr Gachassin very good, very caring personality. My surgery was at Lafayette General Hospital. -
Hi, I am new here and I had my bariatric surgery consult last week and the surgeon I met with said I would be a good candidate for the gastric sleeve. I am 47 and have always struggled with my weight. I have been heavy then (thanks to Prozac) I lost a bunch of weight and kept it off for a while then I gained it all back and then some and have been heavy for the last 10 years. I also suffer from depression and anxiety which leads to the binge eating. I know this is going to be a lot of work and lifechanging for me. I am ready to feel better and be healthy for once in my life. I never knew how hard it is to start this process. Any advice would be great. If anyone is in Massachusetts and going to Leonard Morse Hospital for their surgery, let me know. Thank you, Beth

Does anyone know if it is safe to take Ibuprophen post sleeve surgery?
anonbaribabe replied to apositivelife4me's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
NSAIDs decrease inflammation. Examples include Advil, Aleve, and my favorite: Extra-strength Excedrin After bariatric surgery they can cause irritation to the stomach, which could lead to ulcers. My doctor also said that eventually, some bariatric patients can tolerate NSAIDs in small doses, as long as it's infrequent. -
I have a rant, over in my notifications, the very same topic is coming up multple times, not diverse statements on a certain subject just the same one. I enjoy orereading,on Gmail before I look the topic on Bariatric pal, how, many times can I hear "Harriet Jones had a nosebleed" before it becomes irritating. I want to scream "someone please give poor Harriet a tissue,so we can move on!"

OMG, I literally thought I was dying (I'm 13 days post op RNY Gastric Bypass). I was watching Netflix with my son, when all of a sudden I felt sleepy and had instant back pain. I told my son I was going to lie down upstairs. I went upstairs and took some liquid Tylenol for the back pain. Suddenly I felt flushed, rapid heart beat and the pain in my back became unbearable. I couldn't sit. I couldn't lie down. I just sat at the edge of my bed rocking and moaning and dizzy. Then, I felt pangs of pain, kind of like inside under the top of both rib cages on both sides. I couldn't stop trying to breathe the pain out and rock my body back and forth and moan. I felt dizzy and a little hot and felt like any minute I was going to faint and have to be rushed to the hospital. It took about 20 minutes of intense pain and then it disappeared. Was this Dumping? I retraced my steps and diet today and I had one change and that was that I took a Flinstone Multivitamin 2 hours ago. I told my doctor the other day that the Bariatric Chewable multi-vitamins tasted chalky to me and I could barely stand them. He recommended Flinstones. I just checked the ingredients and there is glucose syrup and sugar in them. Has anyone experienced these symptoms? Could it be dehydration or is this typical dumping? Sorry, so new to all of this still and I did not take a nutrition class so am learning from all of you and whatever I find online. This was super, super scary.

I like it! I have a tat on my right ankle as well, only I got it when I was 18 (1988) a long time ago. They told me the color would need to be filled in every 10 years, but it still looks okay I guess. It has no meaning, I was 18 and in the Army and got matching tattoos with a friend that ended up in Germany and we lost track of each other. I have had to cover it for every job I have had (I work with kids) no dresses for me unless I use band aids. Happy Late birthday! Maybe I can cover my TAT with a better one that has a meaning. Maybe a bariatric tattoo guru has the answers!

A year and a half post-op...
KimTriesRNY replied to thestruggleisreal83's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Are you wanting to still reach your goal weight? Are you tracking your food and hydration? Are you still making healthy food choices or have some pre surgery bad habits started to creep back up that may be preventing further weight loss? Have you checked in with your surgeon or bariatric team? -
Welcome to Bariatric Pal, both,of you. Where do you live and what kind of Surgery are you, planning?

I do have portal account. I will email through it. thanks. Last time I tried emailing them about anything, they said call them. When you select the ask a nurse section, it makes you choose a topic. bariatric is not a topic. only eating disorders is. so I felt at a loss about it. will try again.

Going Alone, dying, fear - How to Overcome?
BubblesCT replied to MizzNewLife's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I understand how you feel. I left my daughters home to travel alone to Tijuana for surgery. What got me through was the fact that I had not been living my best life for the past few years, therefore had not been there for my kids and loved ones in the capacity they deserve. I was dying each and every day in the state I was in. Leading up to surgery, I literally took it day by day, and sometimes hour by hour. I would think...today I'm here in my home, safe, and I'm going to enjoy this day. I took each day like that until I arrived at the hospital for surgery. When I arrived I informed the anesthesiologist I was anxious and she gave me something to relax me. Whenever you have a "what if" thought it is driven by anxiety and irrational thinking. Try to focus on the facts.... the expertise of the doctor, reviews of the facility, and such. If you are going with Bariatric hospital, you are in great hands. They made me feel so safe, cared for, and comfortable the whole time I was there. -
So ms Ashley congratulations,on a surgery well'done, and I hope your future healing goes very well. Welcome to Bariatric Pal and I hope you'll stay a,ling time!😛

Is it possible to over eat and gain weight 4 weeks post-op?
KimTriesRNY replied to kota-raine's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
If you are on a lower protein diet due to renal failure or kidney disease you need to follow the advice of your medical team and not people on the internet. It is frustrating to not lose weight but certain diets must be followed for patients with medical problems bariatric surgery notwithstanding. Please follow guidelines from your doctor/medical team if you are unsure. You do not want to harm your kidneys in the process. -
Vets- how many of you are still 'regulars' here? I still want to chat with people about being in the bariatric community, and really enjoy the support I get from forums, but it seems like there's almost NOBODY here that was here 4 years ago...

I made a checklist a while back of all the surgery prerequisites, and I have been checking things off - feels so good! Because my blood work showed elevated liver enzymes (this has been the case for me for a while), the surgeon added one more requirement: get a liver ultrasound. Ah, well. But even with this new requirement, I will still be finished with everything by the end of the month! Then he can submit everything to the insurance, and hopefully I'll be able to have the surgery in September! I've been reading The Emotional First + Aid Kit: A Practical Guide to Life After Bariatric Surgery, and it has proved to be a good resource. Lots of earnest information, honest truths, short stories of success or failures, helpful suggestions, useful activities. I definitely recommend it. A suggestion it gave was to create pros and cons lists, just to get everything out in front of you and to really make you think honestly about your choice to pursue surgery and what it could mean to do it as well as what it would mean NOT to do it. Good stuff. A simple suggestion, but definitely useful.

Suggestions for new Pre-ops?
Orchids&Dragons replied to JessieGrace319's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Welcome to the site, JessieGrace. This is a very friendly, supportive community and I'm sure you'll get a lot of help here. I would advise you to use this time before your surgery to prepare. If you smoke, stop. If you drink caffeine, wean yourself off. You really don't want caffeine headaches while you recover from surgery. Research bariatric recipes and give them a try. Have a set of recipes ready to go for the different food phases. Make some healthy soups and put them in the freezer. Start exercising now so that you're already in the routine before surgery. Good luck, I hope all goes well for you! -
Head Hunger Considered Less Legitimate?
Orchids&Dragons replied to sillykitty's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
It was an interesting article, but the statistics are unclear. 8% of their eating disordered patients had had bariatric surgery. What they left out, and I think this is the significant point, is what % of the 8% had an eating disorder to begin with and what % developed it after surgery. Right now, from the article, they are only showing correlation, not causation. -
Head Hunger Considered Less Legitimate?
Creekimp13 replied to sillykitty's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
"In the last year alone, 8 percent of patients admitted to the Johns Hopkins Eating Disorders Program had a history of bariatric surgery, says the program’s director, psychiatrist Angela Guarda. Some patients developed an eating disorder after surgery. Others had a pre-existing eating disorder that worsened after gastric bypass." To me, this is very interesting statistical data...from a reputable source. The entire article...linking certain behaviors experienced by bariatric patients to new and worsening eating disorders...was eye opening. For instance....the way clogging your stomach with hard to digest foods to induce vomiting resembles bulemia...and the phobias bariatric patients can have about eating... I thought it was a very interesting read. -
Head Hunger Considered Less Legitimate?
Creekimp13 replied to sillykitty's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
When you're eating starvation level calories....and could satisfy your hunger by eating something healthy....that's REAL hunger in my opinion. Think of the calories your body needs to heal itself and maintain your basal processes.....and think of what you're consuming. That hunger is not "in your head"....it's your body trying to warn you that you will get ill or die of starvation if you don't pull up. This obsession with "head hunger" when we're eating starvation level calories concerns me a lot because it's a stone's throw from eating disorder speak....and eating disorder crossover (anorexia, bulimia) is a very real concern after bariatric surgery. Real Hunger = can be satisfied by a healthy snack that's on your plan. if you have real hunger...YOU SHOULD EAT. Head Hunger = you've just had a healthy dinner but think you want a Big Mac. You're not really physically hungry...your body has had it's nutritional needs met. But you *think* you're hungry for something you crave, or you have an emotion that would be soothed with food, or you're bored, stressed etc. -
Hello everyone! Been watching this forum for a while but this is my first post. Had my VSG on June 28,2018 and had a terrible ordeal (enlarged liver, surgeon found a hernia and had to repair it, extreme vomiting for 2.5 days straight in the hospital, and severe dehydration because I was too afraid to swallow anything but my own saliva). But I made it through! 8 days post-op today and I've been on nothing but broth, Jello, ice chips and popsicles and I'm sick of it! I also have a lot of the air/gas they put in me for the procedure and it's like a every 10-20mins painful surge that goes thru your stomach and chest, like contractions or something, and I just have to brace myself until it passes. Can't wait till all the gas is out. Other than that I don't have much major pain, but if I do, codine is right there next to me to lend its druggy hand.. Moderately of course [emoji57].. But!! As you all know it was July 4th was this week and they were BQQing on my block, so my friends and BF came over. And the way my mouth drooled over those ribs, hot dogs, burgers, and MAC AND cheese, you would've thought I was a rabid animal lmao. But nonetheless, I just rolled my eyes at each scrumptious plate passing my face and drank my dinner and followed up with my strawberry and lemon Jello to make me feel better. And I all kept saying in my head was "You're gonna look better than all of them one day, so don't worry and keep going." [emoji18] That leads me to the bright side of all these pain and struggles-- 19lbs downs as of today!!! Whoop whoop!!! ((HAPPY DANCE)) Now I'm sure it's mostly due to the clear liquid diet I've been on, but still what a difference a week makes! My current struggle is getting all this Water (64oz) down in one day, i barely finish a 16 oz bottle in one day, but I'm trying because dehydration is SCARY!!.. Keep going guys we can do this!!! Blood sugar getting low? NOT diabetic...
James Marusek replied to Roxy1771's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Several individuals that undergo bariatric surgery experience a type of low blood sugar after the surgery. It is known as reactive hypoglycemia. This is independent of whether you were diabetic prior to surgery. Here are a couple links to the condition: https://www.ridgeviewmedical.org/services/bariatric-weight-loss/enewsletter-articles/reactive-hypoglycemia-postgastric-bypass https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/diabetes/expert-answers/reactive-hypoglycemia/faq-20057778
