Introducing foods to your new stomach.
Lovin2lose posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm just under two weeks post-op. I was operated on here in the states and my post-op diet is as follows. Day of surgery, we're allowed NOTHING at all. No Water, nothing. That sucked. Stage 1: just water (this was the day after surgery) We could only sip no more than 1oz over 1 hour. Stage 2: Clear liquids, sipping no more than 3oz over 1 hour. Then we were sent home on day 3. Stage 3: sugar free & low fat full liquids, sipping no more than 8oz over 1 hour. We're supposed to get in 48oz liquids a day plus 60 grams of Protein. During this stage the doctor approved water, crystal light, coffe/tea, broth, sugar free Jello, sugar free popsicles, sugar free juice, tomato or V-8 juice, yogurt Stage 4: pureed/soft foods. This is where we can introduce things like fish, tuna salad, egg salad, chicken salad, imitation seafood, cheese, cottage cheese ricotta cheese, eggs, baked chicken/turkey. So, I go see my doctor in two days for my 2 weeks post op appointment and this is where he'll advance me to stage 4-pureed foods. Personally, I cannot wait. I'm so sick of drinking and can't wait to taste food again, even though it'll look like baby food. LOL I guess I could get to my question now. Once I start eating again whether it's during the pureed food stage or once I start to actually eat normally again, how long does it take for you to know if what you're eating is going to agree with you? Is this something that you feel immediate or does it take time for your stomach to say, 'NOPE' this ain't happening? -
Artificial Sweeteners: foods without
Oregondaisy replied to 4Sparrow's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have Interstitial Cystitis so I know what you mean about a lot of UTIs. I had a lot of them since I was little and many many more as an adult. The one thing that comes to mind is the Greek yogurt in the black container. It has stevia. It's Okios Tripple Zero. Another thing I like is power crunch bars. Jay Robb also makes Protein drinks with stevia. Most things have splenda and it's hard to find things without it. -
Ready to start mushy food this week
kgd002 replied to goosefam's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started puréed food yesterday and I can definitely tell when I'm full. Im having a very hard time getting in 2 ounces. I have to eat 1 ounce and then wait an hour to eat the 2nd ounce. With yogurt I don't have this problem though. I can easily eat 4-5 ounces no problem. It was on my full liquid diet I just finished though so it's definitely different then puréed foods. Long stall and cant break it
KristenLe replied to EmilyJune's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Concentrate on protein, fluids and exercise. I would have protein instead of toast, cereal or oatmeal. Yogurt, eggs, cottage cheese, beans, soft cheese, tuna, egg salad, chicken salad, etc. My plan says eat 5-6 times a day (2-4ozs at that stage). -
Late June Sleeve Buddies?
Seastars replied to Maggie143's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I should probably ask my dietician about it tomorrow. Her materials give goals (for each day of the first two weeks) of 48-64 oz Water (or other noncaloric fluid) and 3-4 Protein Shakes (about 200 calories and 30 grams Protein each). If we hit those we can have sugar-free Jello, SF pudding, broth Soups or plain greek yogurt in small amounts. And then in a summary section it says that will get us to about 700-900 calories [i misremembered, it's not 1000] and 100+ grams of protein daily. I think she will tell me to ignore the calorie count, and just stick to counting water ounces and protein grams. -
I went protein crazy!
kjr2016 replied to gettingsleeved1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've been finding the vanilla and chocolate Protein powders mixed with milk a little too sweet, so I started mixing them with other things. Vanilla mixed with greek yogurt cuts the tanginess and ends up tasting a little like cream cheese frosting (but not as sweet). Chocolate Protein Powder in a SF chocolate pudding was good too. -
Countown is at 9 days...27 June is my date!
CeeGee replied to CeeGee's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Only one hour and fifteen minutes left to eat my salad and drink Protein shake and eat yogurt! Then the nerves settle in as I drink my 8 bottles of Water. I have some work to finish before I'm out on medical leave tomorrow so that should keep me busy. I'm an early riser so I'm worried since I don't have to be at the hospital until 830am. Daily calories allowed and serving size after surgery
cindyw41 replied to volsfan82's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
2oz of a Protein, 8oz of a liquid (yogurt, pudding, Soup, shake exc.) should be your serving size. Eat your protein first, then veggies and if you still have room then a carb/starch. I rarely have room for anything but my protein. Most of the time I can't finish that without feeling satisfied. My calories at this point is 600-800. I'm still in the losing phase. I doubt my surgeon will increase this until I'm maintaining. My target goals are 100 gr protein and 64oz Water. Some don't track calories..just protein, carbs and water. I track to make sure I hit the min calories because I'm still not feeling hungry and I can't rely on my body to tell me to eat. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
If you are having to chew, i dont think that qualifies as pureed, jmho. Greek yogurt, refried beans, scrambled eggs, that type of thing that doesnt require chewing really. Also, you didnt mention how far along you were?

It is all a bit confusing at times, so I can see people getting VERY confused. Some doctors have two weeks of liquid diets post op, not my doc. Day three is puréed and I'm just fine. My doc says no carbs and no tomato sauce, yet people are making chili to purée and mashed potatoes are on their approved list. Nothing nutritious about mashed potatoes. My doc says no milk or yogurt, yet everyone I read has been having yogurt. I asked my doctor about this and he said don't listen or pay attention to what they're all doing cause it's wrong. I assume I should believe him. As much as I'd love to have yogurt or puréed chili. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Anyone have to do post op liquid diet?
MissKay replied to correak's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah I only had to do 2 weeks pre-op liquids, and 2 weeks post-op. I technically don't start purees until Monday, but my nutritionist who works very closely with my surgeon said if I felt ready to introduce some of the pureed items already, I could. I've added in cottage cheese and soft scrambled eggs. The eggs gave me some gas pain, but otherwise I did pretty well with them. That's so strange that they have you hat 4 weeks.... that's a long damn time. As for Protein drinks, get GENEPRO. I mix it in with vanilla almond milk and SF chocolate syrup, and it tastes really good. You can't really taste the protein at all. I've mixed it with broth too. Others have mixed it in with yogurt, applesauce, etc. -
Anyone have to do post op liquid diet?
Daisee68 replied to correak's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
4 weeks post-op is a long time. I had 2 weeks like most. BUT there is likely some reason dr requires it, so I would do your best to stick with it. Is there any chance it includes things like yogurt or pudding? Sometimes, they consider those things in "liquid" diet. You might ask... You really need to find a Protein drink you can stomach. At 1 year post-op, I still have 1 Premier Protein shake per day. Have you tried Premier Protein ready made drinks? The powder I use that I LOVE is Precision Engineered whey Protein Isolate. The vanilla smells heavenly even and the chocolate is amazing. I will add an Orange Crush powder stick (like Crystal Light) to vanilla powder and 2 oz of Fairlife milk and 4 oz of Water and lots of ice. Tastes like Orange Julius! Yummy! I also add PB2 to my Chocolate powder (again with Fairlife milk and water and ice) and it is wonderful. If you haven't bought any yet, get some of the sugar free flavored syrups to add - peppermint mocha, raspberry, pomegranate, salted caramel, etc. The options are endless. This blog has lots of good recipes - http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2007/06/my-favorite-protein-shake-recipes.html. Oh and try the protein hot chocolate in the Bariatric Pal website. I LOVE the amaretto flavor! -
I use boost for diabetics. It has barely any sugar, 16 grams of Protein and chocolate flavour. Very useful for when you are in a hurry in the mornings since I am used to skipping breakfast..For my shakes, I use a spoonful of frozen yogurt with milk and some frozen fruit. English is my 6th language so forgive me if my sentences don't make any sense at times!

Day 2 after surgery..
Loudy227 replied to rimmarrufo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm on day three after surgery today. Today is a lot better than yesterday as far as getting liquids down. I'm just kind of accepting the fact that my belly is sore and feels full but I need to keep getting my liquids in. I also did a two week preop liquid diet and first two days postop were Clear Liquids followed by two weeks full liquids. There will be plenty of time to try new foods later, but now is the time for healing. There's a lot I can try on full liquids, shakes with different added flavors, strained Soups, yogurt, veggie juice, pudding. It will be six weeks before I can have "regular" food, so I'm staying positive because I'm in this for the long haul. Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App -
Ready to start mushy food this week
Bufflehead replied to goosefam's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yogurt and tuna are very different. Yogurt is not dense protein and it tends to slide right through your pyloric valve, thus your restriction is not engaged. Also, at two weeks out your stomach nerves are still healing and aren't necessarily capable of reliably telling your brain that you shouldn't give it any more food. That's why it is so important to measure or weigh a small portion and eat that, and only that, regardless of what physical signals you may or may not be getting. Good luck! -

I am going to be 2 weeks 6/29. I'm not having any problems getting my liquids and Protein. Dying to taste real food again! My problem is that I don't feel that full. I have a 5oz. yogurt and feel like l could have another. Is this normal? I thought I was going to be too full to eat. If I would be told to eat 2oz of tuna tomorrow I would probably eat a whole can. Question for veterans - hardest part for you?
Julie norton replied to WitchySar's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
Yes erp! As hard as learning to lose with WLS, this maintenance program is difficult also. Most days go according to plan. And I do plan mostly.... Some days I'm just hungrier!!! Does anyone else have hungrier days?? It might be :yogurt and a protein bar along with my meatball and string cheese Or dense protein and extra protein milk. Or a premier protein.... (I still use those 9+ years out as old standbys) and good old chicken thighs and a sweet potato w/ a small vege. A salad with salmon or chicken is a favorite, if I can stop with the creamy dressing. YUM. Yes. Eating slowly, and not drinking, except for a wayward sip took some getting used to. We all have our challenges. And I wouldn't trade back for them for my 250 + life for money or fame[emoji93][emoji93] -
Sleeve surgery 06/09/2016
KristenLe replied to Kristinsleeve06092016's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Are you on purees? That's my plan for 2 &3 weeks. I was told to still have protein drinks for protein. To eat 1-2ozs over 20 mins of puree wait 30 mins and have 2-4 ozs of protein drink over 1 hour wait 30 mins and repeat. Possible purees could be no sugar added apple sauce, avocado, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese, egg substitute or liquid egg whites, tuna, yogurt, plain oatmeal, soups (no chunks or blended). You can Google some good recipes for purees too. Experiment and add spices or flavors to change things up. Purees must be less than 5 gms fat and 5 gms sugar. Recommends to set timer and eat on a schedule to be consistent. I think this stage is to reintroduce foods slowly but more to learn how to eat again (like a baby) and small portions. My NUT said to get protein from liquids and not to worry that you aren't able to get it from food yet. I hope this helps. And you will lose - stick with the plan and you won't fail! Good luck! -

I am having the hardest time. I don't know what to eat and I do feel hunger. I eat yogurt with genpro for breakfast. Even though I could have scrambled eggs now. Then last night after broth for lunch. I had refrained beans. I wanted more but I was scared. I think I had about 1/3 of a cup. Anyway. I'm struggling and don't feel like I'm losing. I am so scared I did this for nothing. I love real food. So the sf puddings are wearing on me. I don't like sweet as much as not. Help. What are you guys eating two weeks post op. How much. How often. Thanks. -
Cooking for one is "soul destroying"? I don't cook a lot, but the thought of having to cook three meals a day for a large family like my mother and grandmother's had to do doesn't remotely appeal to me. I get to decide what I make, when. Fortunately, I don't find that soul destroying. I am learning how to "cook" and am finding it fun to roast or grill a protein and some vegetables. I still eat a lot of yogurt, cottage cheese, tuna, turkey, etc. that don't need to be "cooked".

Sleeve complication
brendaleecantu replied to Mrs. Lincoln's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I'm 3 weeks post op and for the past 3 days I have been so nauseous and throwing up at least once a day. My doctor advice Pepdid AC and nausea meds. He thinks it's acid reflux that is causing my nausea. I feel horrible! I am so weak. I am able to drink Water all day and I can eat light foods like Jello and yogurt but I can't do proteinuria shakes. I just want to feel normal again!!! For the hospital you just need a phone charger (I got an extra long one that was 10ft)......chapstick, comb or brush, tooth bush...but the hospital will supply that if you forget......maybe a pair of undies....I also brought PJs but that's not necessary.....but made me feel better when I changed into my own clothes..... For home have what ever liquids you plan to drink, Protein drinks, a couple of cans of creamed Soup, broth and maybe Greek yogurt, depending on what your diet will be for the first week......For the creamed soup when you open a can you won't be able to eat very much....put the rest in a ice tray and freeze it for later.....two ice cubes were the perfect serving size for me. Then when you're past the stage the ice cubes are great for seasoning chicken when you bake it. As far as what to expect at the hospital your doctor's office would be your best resource as everyone is a little different....if you have specific questions I'll do my best to answer them.

CALLING ALL JULY 2016 SLEEVERS
SalOdyssey replied to Tresa Embil's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Depends. At my previous attempt at VSG it was all liquids, between shakes and broth. This attempt it is still mostly shakes, but plan allows for sugar free Jello, pudding, cream of what/oatmeal, light yogurt, and raw veggies. As I've said before, you could create a book as deep as the Grand Canyon for how may different varieties of the pre-op diet there are.
