heartfire replied to Shamrockgirl60's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Stayed the same and I'll take it! Gained 5lbs of Water weight overnight after forgetting my BP med one day. It's a diuretic too. Managed to get back to where I was last week by this AM but can tell I'm still bloated. We'll see what happens this week. I go for another fill on Wednesday. He's not going to be happy. He wanted me to lose 6lbs. Ain't gonna happen! -
new October Bandster (young, lower BMI, and afraid)
bandster_1007 replied to bandster_1007's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
i do not have to do a liquid diet because of my bmi. my doctor's office only requires them if you bmi is 45 or above. mine is 41. i'm kind of glad, i get a couple of weeks to say goodbye to my foods and a little bit longer for will power. i'm also kind of sad because i would lose more weight if i did the liquid diet. i'm having my surgery here in arkansas, i am a self pay patient also, by the time i pay this off, i probably won't want to pay for any other surgery i considered Mexico but i decided to have it local. -
I am so nervous and excited! I am excited because I have struggled with my weight my whole life and have done just about every diet out there. I am nervous because of failure. Any tips/advice/suggestions? Thank you all!

FIRST, I'D LIKE TO SAY I'M GLAD TO SEE THE JOURNALS BACK UP AND RUNNING. I WAS BEGINNING TO HAVE THOUGHTS THAT MY JOURNAL WAS PERMANENTLY GONE. I had the EGD done on 9/18. Something about it at the time, made Dr. C concerned so he also did an upper GI while I was there. A few days later, he contacted me and assured me that everything looked O.K. No ulcers. He thought my band was placed a little high when he did the EGD. That's why he did the upper GI. For the most part, I feel fine. I do have just a little bit of burning if I overeat. Which I'm not supposed to do anyway, so I consider it a reminder that I must make good decisions and stop when I am satisfied rather than full. I'm still sleeping slightly elevated and I would say that I'm pretty much where I was before that fill with Dr. Oweis. When I lay on my back I get that pressure. I sleep best on my sides. I generally don't wake with a sore throat, although it's hard to tell right now since I have a little bit of a cold that's hanging on. At this point, I guess it's time to start focusing back on my weight loss since the crisis seems to be at the very least on the downslide. I'd really like to see onderland soon. The last time I weighed myself (which was a few weeks ago), I was 206 I think. And, unless I've gained significantly during this period I should be able to do it with a little determination. Plan: start logging my food. Exercise, Exercise, Exercise. If I can't do my elliptical, I'll be sure to walk the track at work for at least 30min a day.

1 year down, many to go!

I totally understand your fears! That was me.. I'm going to spend this money, time, miss work, be in pain and what if it doesn't work? Or what if I gain all the weight back? My cousin had it done 3 yrs ago, and she helped me tremendously! You have to look at the surgery as a tool.. It's not a fix. You can't drink things carbonated, just stay away from bread/pasta, greasy foods are not good for you, and I can't have milk products (upsets my tummy!) you have to look at it as your eating to fuel your body. Eat your protein and take your vitamins!!!! You will be just fine! When your full, your full. Don't keep eating, you'll throw up everywhere! Get used to not eating and drinking and not pooping a lot! :-/ I'm just being real! it's the best thing though, even though the first few months are rough! Hang in there! -
I was told it has a lot to do with the sodium intake as well. And that our bands don't begin its real journey until we have our 1st fill. Tinaf, I am with you ....I haven't gained but haven't got past the 16 lbs lost neither.

I'm usually not a drinker but have had wine while out with friends recently and got tipsy pretty quick on 3 glasses of wine. Has to be lower tolerance. Also I gained about 3pm the wknd I did it donuts not worth all those extra calories an dehydration. I wouldnt mess with it so soon post op cause it can make stomach sick.

Congrats on your weight loss !!! Amazing !! I'll stick with the mixed drinks !

Well, I am doing really good, feeling good and been told that I'm looking good also:tongue2:. Yes, I did beat my husband in the weight loss challenge!!! I got below 200 before he did, although he really did not try. I know if he would have tried he could have beat me, but he loves his junk food too much. Plus, I think he wanted me to win, thank you dear. I now weigh 196 and feel soooo good. I feel good physcially and mentally. I did try the pills from my MIL for about one week and I hated the way they made me feel. They made me feel...well, NOTHING! And I did not like that feeling. I love to play and loving on my kids and feeling alive. I have been going through my closet and cleaning out alot of my fat clothes. I can now wear an XL, how exciting is that. I used to wear a 2XL, so yeah it feels good. My principal told me the other day that I was looking good and I said "I know!" So, things are going really good and I'm very happy.

It can be a long process, but worth every step of the way. And it's good to start out early trying to lose weight now, like you're doing, and adapt healthier habits like drinking more water, etc. It makes it much easier on you in the end. Good luck!
-
I think it depends. If you look at my stats you can see that I started with a very high weight and still have plenty to lose. If you are extra heavy, you lose it quick - If you don't have much to lose, it will take you longer.

How did you handle this

My quote of your post broke : ...Hubby and mom went out. I was OK with it at first. By the time they got back I was a mess. I felt so left out. ...Hubby said you could of gone out and just ate some eggs. He swears that once I have my surgery he will be on board to change his diet and start losing weight. ...Between us, I'm really resentful that they went out for breakfast. Hubby could of stayed home with me and had breakfast. ...This feels so petty. But it is how I feel Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-T337A using the BariatricPal App Why in the world were you "a mess"? You chose not to go. Surely missing one outing is not the end of your world? Hubby was right, you could have gone. I often go out with my friends and family to places where nothing on the menu sounds appealing, or I am really NOT hungry (if the menu is not friendly -- like pizza' and pasta' or chains where everything is fried and carby -- I usually eat first), I just order a drink. I don't NEED to eat just because everyone else is. You WILL learn to go any where you want and make great choices but you do need to practice. Why should he be "on board"? What does your weight loss have to do with his? You're resentful? That's a bit over the top, don't you think? He could have stayed home, you are right, but why should he? He enjoyed some time out with mom, good for him! And yes, you are totally entitled to your feelings. You can't help HOW you feel, but you can help how you act on them. Right now, you are acting out of emotion, not out of logic and that's understandable. I know all the above sounds a bit harsh, but that is not my intent. It this is the real world and it is about to be your reality. You can choose to go out with others, or you can choose not to. Again, you are soon going to learn that you can choose to go any where you want. You are having this surgery, your husband is not. You say he is really good at losing weight when he tries? You are not only going to be really good at losing it but you are going to be good at keeping it off. It's seriously a win. Your emotions right now are yours. You can chalk up some of it to anxiety due to a very big change that is coming in your life. You don't know what to expect, you don't know the realities of WLS except for what you've read, and you are emotional. It's ALL OK. It's going to be fine. YOU are going to be fine. You aren't going to miss out on life because of this surgery. You are, in fact, going to gain SO MUCH MORE. I promise. -
I think you will find even people who don't achieve an ideal weight get significant health benefits. I lost a CPAP,my A1c is way down (was inching toward pre diabetes), no more blood pressure meds. My other blood work was always good, but my cholesterol has gone from good to unheard of outside of Japan (that was a joke but my point is beyond excellent). Since I work out my resting heart rate is 59, which is considered quite fit for a 50year old woman. In spite of my current cold, I am sick much less and just generally look and feel much younger than my age.

I am still pretty nervous about the whole thing in general. I am a nurse, so a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Surgery always seemed like such a sell out for me, personally. My sister had gastric bypass and looks horrendous. Hair loss, skin sagging and generally unhealthy. On the flipside, my sister in law had the LB and looks phenomenal. I don't even know if my insurance will pay for this procedure, so that is another subject. The one thing that seems to bother me is the lump that you can feel just under the skin (the port?). My sister in law let me feel it, and I have to admit, it creeps me out a bit. I would be excited to put weight gain behind me once and for all. I am so frustrated with yo yo dieting, and all the strenuous psychological and physical work that I have put in over the years.

I am scheduled for my first fill tomorrow. I am very nervous because the Physicians Assistant is doing it not my Dr. I remember her saying that if I lost enought weight she would not need to do a fill. However, I lost about 22 pounds in 7 weeks and it has come to a halt this week. I am very pleased so far (not complaining) but I kind of hope she will do the fill. How bad does it hurt and how do they find that little port under your skin?

Plateau ALREADY????????
citygirl4616 replied to tinaf's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What you are experiencing is very common and completely normal. There is a pretty good chance that you will not lose any more weight (and may gain a little) until your first adjustment. Many doctors put the band in empty, so you are probably getting little to no restriction right now. Also, the first 6 post-op weeks are really for healing, not necessarily for optimal weight loss. Consider any weight loss a bonus. In the 2 weeks after my surgery, I lost 16 pounds. Then in the next 2 weeks (soft food stage), I lost nothing. Then when I added regular food, I gained 2 pounds! Finally, at the 6 week mark, I got my first adjustment, and within 4 days, I was down 3 pounds. Whew! This seems to be a pretty common pattern, so don't sweat it! Just eat as healthy as possible for now...lots of Protein for healing, and wait patiently for your first fill. -
Afraid I'm Making a mistake
Sosewsue61 replied to mariev213's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No regrets, wish I had done it sooner. Another way to look at it is this - if you don't have the surgery you could go back to a diet like Weight Watchers and lose 30-40-50 lbs, struggle with the same issues of learning to eat highly nutritious food, the weight will come off slowly, you will get disgusted and eat off plan, then beat yourself up over it. And start over. How many times do you want to start over? I know I did it for decades. Yes, some foods might be off the list but they become less important to you. Food is not an enemy, nor is it a friend - only you can give it that power. I could eat some bread, pasta, rice but it really isn't a big deal to not eat it. I take a bite once in awhile of toasted bread and move on. I am not physically craving anything unless I super indulge on sugar carbs for a couple days - but as soon as two days without it pass I get over it. Have I had wine - yes a glass, cake - 4 bites of cheesecake at a bridal shower - it wasn't as good as my homemade cheesecake LOL The weight will stay off easier, maintaining will be easier. -
I had months of Weight Watchers weigh-ins, but even though they say they take those types of weigh-ins, it says by a physician or licensed dietitian. Um, I don't know about Nutra System, but Weight Watches doesn't have either, at least not the one I went to. Which is really dumb in my opinion because the insurance KNOWS they don't have that. I've been back and fourth with my clinic and insurance. I would talk to your clinic and insurance and make triple sure they will except it. I decided to not bother trying since I've pretty much done everything they've required. I am so afraid to get turned down that I'm paranoid about having everything perfect.

This is the first time this has occurred to me. I thought I was prepared for it. I do/did realize I was being petty. The feelings really did take me by surprise. If I hadn't of gone out the night before I would of gone out this morning. My hubby does support my decision to have WLS. He also has about 100 #'s to lose. It is his decision to lose weight not mine. No one else experienced something like this? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using the BariatricPal App

How did you handle this
PorkChopExpress replied to kimberb's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
In my opinion, I can't resent anyone or anything when I'm the one that is abnormal and needs to be corrected. The world is not designed for the obese. I can't rage against the size of the seats in an airplane or in an arena, because they aren't made for me. They're made for the "normal" person. Obviously with obesity becoming an epidemic in the US, the definition of "normal" is kind of changing...but I don't think that's really a healthy or good thing. I cannot expect other people to modify their behavior to suit me, when it's ME that needs to modify his behavior. So I will do what I need to do in order to achieve my weight loss goals, and I won't expect anyone else to cater to me. I can control myself...especially now that I'm post-surgery and I have no real choice in the matter, and I'm not dominated by hunger. The diet you're on now pales in comparison to the two week, all-liquid pre-op diet most of us went through (some went even three weeks on it). Nothing but liquid or semi-liquid (sugar-free)...it's brutal, because you still have the hunger. Just soldier through it, because once you've had the surgery, none of it will matter anymore. You won't have hunger (only head hunger, which you can deal with) and you'll have to start focusing on re-training your brain to accommodate the new stomach. Nobody can really do any of that for you, it's all going to be on you. You're responsible for yourself, don't expect anyone else to change. -
Just to update you all, on Tuesday I saw the Bariatric Nurse, the dietician and the Clinical Psychologist. The nurse was a little concerned about my potassium levels, (I have a lot of Water retention and am on diuretics) but other than that was fine. The dietician wants me to lose 5% of my weight over the next four weeks, ouch! So am back on liquids only. The Psychologist (the one I was most concerned about) was an absolute sweetheart, very encouraging and although thinks I may find some counselling useful, due to 'some childhood difficulties' has backed my surgery 100%. Yeah. I have a follow up appointment in four weeks time and hopefully if I have managed to get rid of my 5%, I will be given a date for meeting my surgeon. Only after that meeting will I be given a date for surgery. Keep everything crossed for me as the next four weeks will be crucial.

Restriction or Stuck?
NJGirl32 replied to EzekielsMommy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yep, you have a tight fill! Either get a small unfill or choose very carefully. I am in the same exact spot as you-can't enjoy food without feeling that I may either get stuck or it will sit there and slowly work it's way down. I get hungry too-I know it's head hunger but sometimes you just want to eat! I am stickingto mushy type foods or making sure my foods ae wet with some kind of sauce. I got a chicken salad from McDonald's and could not eat the entire thing. I could only manage a tiny bit. I really do want to enjoy food at some point, but I also want to lose weight. I am hoping it loosens up because I don't really want an unfill. Good luck! -
anxious about tuesday
LouLapJourney replied to karmaandkismet's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was nervous, too. I searched on the American Medical Association's website, and found some articles about success rates of gastric banding. Then I made a chart of weight histories for the past 5 years (with photos). It turns out, my doctor was aware of the data, and agreed that banding is a good option for permanent weight loss. I hope you have a positive experience with your doctor tomorrow.
