  1. To be honest I did drink before 3 months and had no problem with it. I would say stay away from it as long as you can though because it will hinder your weight loss. I lost 80 lbs really quick and have stayed at this weight for 6 months. The stoppin of my weight loss is all alcohol. I drink a few drinks every weekend and then I have to lose those lbs during the week. I have not gained any weight but I am not losing it and I attribute it all to alcohol. so, my advice would be to stay away from alcohol until you are at goal weight. (That's also what my doctor keeps pounding in my head.) .

    Sugar free

I think it also depends on what you mean by "dessert". I enjoy sugar-free Jello and sugar-free pudding, and almost every night I have a cup of sugar-free cocoa (with a scoop of chocolate Protein powder in it, very yummy). I make my own low-carb whipped cream by whipping heavy cream with splenda and vanilla extract. I have even found out you can make low-carb ice cream (although I haven't tried it myself). If you are talking about sugar-free cakes or similar, I think you need to be careful. As @@Djmohr says, if you are far enough out you can probably handle it, but you may not want to. My wife enjoys a sugar-free blueberry loaf, but if you look at the nutrition information on it, it is still loaded with fat and carbs (and sugar alcohols). sugar free definitely doesn't mean low-calorie. If you are talking about sugar-free candies, that's a good question. Russell Stover makes a whole line of sugar-free candies (not low-calorie, just sugar free), like mint patties and chocolate-covered peanut brittle. I have often wondered if I might try one of those, but I haven't yet. I'll probably wait until I am in maintenance before I try those.
  3. Ok, well my surgeon says to wait one year. I'm clearly in the minority here but my one year will be Sat. Oct. 22nd...and I have YET to have even one sip of alcohol (or soda for that matter!) but that's just me. I'm a rule follower and I'm not a big drinker so it was no big deal for me to give up alcohol for a year. I'm a bit curious to see the effect of alcohol on my sleeve but not curious enough to try it yet. Maybe someday soon! Glad you had second thoughts about it...let that tummy heal first!
  4. My dr. also said the absortion of alcohol will be different after the sleeve. It will be much more potent.

    No weight loss? Please Help!!!

In my case I have to watch what I eat in order to loose weight even with the band. I do not eat junk food at all. I exercise daily and really work hard to loose the weight. My weakness is not chips, candy, Cookies or cake. My weakness is margaritas. If I could just not give into my cravings for margaritas I would have it made. Even though I do cheat with alcohol, I am still loosing weight pretty steadily. I recommend that you start keeping a food journal. There are several places online that you can do this or just simply buy yourself a small note pad and start keeping track of your food and Water intake. By doing this you will be able to look back and reference what you have been eating and figure out why you are not loosing. I eat between 1000-1200 calories each day. If I have a margarita or two, I try and calculate them into my daily calorie intake. But I always focus on getting my 70 grams of Protein and at least 64 oz of water each day. Without my protein I lack the energy for my workouts. I'm sure that if you check with your surgeon's office or meet with a nutritionist you can get a specific diet plan to follow that will aid in your weight loss effort. Good luck to you!
  6. I agree with others here. I think it's way to early. I only recently, 4+ months out, had a sip of red wine for a toast. I don't know if it was psychological but it felt like it burned a little. I stay away from alcohol for now and will probably wait till 6 months or so. My surgeon recommended three to four months that's why I had that "sip."

    Trying to decide

Also, after this discussion with my friend, I came home, opened the website of a local newspaper, and at the top of the "most read" articles today, there was an interview with a woman who runs a food addiction clinic, the only one of its kind in the country. The headline was that up to 60% of those who had gastric sleeve ended up with an alcohol addiction instead. She didn't give a citation for her claim, so I don't know how accurate that is or if it has any basis in reality at all. She said that alcohol goes into the blood stream faster when you have a smaller stomach and so people developed an alcohol problem, swapping food addiction for another addiction. IDK, I drink alcohol maybe five or six times a year, and most often it's just a glass of wine at dinner. I googled this a bit and found a US study that said that around 20% of all people who underwent bariatric surgery in several centers in the US during a certain time period had developed problematic drinking. That correlation was strongest for people who had gastric bypass, where 20% of people had, according to the study, developed a full blown alcohol addiction. So, it looks like she exaggerated the risk. The headline shocked me a bit, but diving into the studies risk factors included being male (not me), younger (nope), smoking (nope) and drinking regularly (I don't know if a few times a year can be called regular) and having less social support (less than what?). Have you heard of or considered this risk factor? One of the articles I read said you should avoid alcohol altogether for the first year after surgery, is that something you have done or heard of?

    Today was rough.

I messed up my post yesterday, today I'm officially 5 days post op. I'm down another 2 pounds. 253 from 271! I woke up feeling horrible though. I had a sour stomach. I quickly grabbed my pepcid and took it with a swig of water followed by an anti-nausea dissolveable. I then took my first real shower since Sunday night. WOOHOO! However, I felt so weak. My arm muscles started to burn when I was washing my hair. When I got out, it was nice putting on fresh comfy clothes. Being so tired and drained, I slept for another 5-6 hours and I still felt awful when I woke up around 7PM. My sleep is all reversed now. I sleep all day and stay up all night :[ I went for a walk this evening, but it was way too cold and I wasn't properly dressed. (Note to self: Don't walk around with leggings as pants in winter). I definitely hydrated more this evening, and I'm feeling much better. I started getting incision pains, but not the external kind, it's the internal kind. I'M SO PARANOID I'M PUSHING MY SLEEVE TOO HARD WITH ALL THIS PAIN FROM DRINKING. It's not bad pain when I'm drinking, it's only after when I realize I did it too fast. I'm not having an issue drinking and keeping things down at all. I just really don't want a leak or an abscess. I wish Tuesday would come (Merry Christmas to those who celebrate it!) so I can start some protein shakes and drink some milk. Maybe I could even try some egg nog (non-alcoholic of course) and water it down with skim milk. I know I could use the fat and protein to help me with energy because right now I'm barely getting any. and still no protein after trying isopure clear drinks this week. I think maybe max a day I'm getting between 5-10grams. WHICH IS HORRIBLE! I'm going to Wal-mart tomorrow to get some vitamins, lactaid, sugar free syrups, powdered milk, and a temporary protein powder until my nectar chocolate truffle comes in the mail. I know by next Thursday, I'm going to be sick of protein shakes!

    Advice...

In the early stages of pregnancy there is not a lot of weight gain. Most women can stay in normal clothes until after the first trimester. If the pregnancy tests are coming out negative, you are probably not pregnant . Worrying about being pregnant can make your period not come. I would advise just relaxing and waiting to see if you get your period in the next week or two. During that time don't drink alcohol or smoke. If you are pregnant, the waiting doesn't hurt anything. You may be stalled in weight loss because you are in a happy relationship. When I met my husband (preband) I gained 20 pounds in a very short time. And absolutely use some form of birth control. Babies need to be planned.

    Alcoholic Beverages

If your physician says moderate alcohol is okay I would suggest scotch on the rocks. It's full flavored enough you won't be as tempted to drink it quickly. If your not a scotch drinker already get a small bottle of something on the more expensive side like Laphroig the bottle will last a good long time so don't let the sticker shock scare you off. After that I'd suggest bourbon just avoid the temptation to use it as a mixer or drink it in shots. My third choice would be wine but at that point it's harder to identify a specific bottle that you can enjoy without drinking too quickly due to personal taste. My goal would be to find a drink that I can enjoy sipping from a single glass for as close to 2 hours as possible. If that doesn't sound like something you'd want to do regardless of what the doctor says then I'd encourage you to just skip the alcohol that night.

    Calcium Vs. Calcium Citrate

hi feedyoureye! To answer your questions I get in 64-80oz of fluids a day (usually two shakes made with Water, 12oz each), 2-2.5 fills of my 24oz water bottle, and sometimes a glass of tea. Along with broths, SF Jell-O, etc. This is a very different feeling from dehydration headache, I've had those before as I've had the low-magnesium before. In 2009 I went to the emergency room with a 5-day migraine-like headache and similar muscle aches. It was after a few months battling a severe sinus infection with three round of antibiotics (which I hate). The doctor tested me and said I had alarmingly low magnesium levels, which was most likely the cause of my symptoms. Antibiotics can rob the body of the mineral, as does time of the month, too much calcium, and not enough leafy greens. Given this diet of ours does not allow much room for greens, it's a double whammy. Our bodies are in highly acidic PH levels with any high-Protein, low-carb diet not rich in healthy doses of fruits and vegetables. Also, haven't had a drop of caffeine since New Year's and even then I'd cut back drastically since October (quit coffee, green/black tea was only caffeine source until before surgery). And I don't drink alcohol... I'm going to try a sample of this new algae-source calcium/magnesium capsule, a pharmacist at a local health store suggested I try it.
  13. So far, I've had an easy time walking away from Desserts. I'm sure it's just because I'm still in the honeymoon period (3.5 months post op) but sweets don't really appeal right now. I had a harder time being around chips and crackers. I had made a garlic/olive/dried tomato FF cream cheese ball so I used it as a spread on my turkey. I also made a crab dip and just ate that with a spoon. However, I know I ate more than I normally would because we were there for several hours and I ate a piece of turkey every couple of hours. Proud that I managed to skip my mom's corn casserole and its ooey goodness. I won't see it again for another year and hopefully by then, I'll be in a place where I can have a spoon of it. I still haven't had any alcohol but I was never a wine/beer drinker. I was always fond of vodka/cranberry and I'm pretty sure that's a bad idea.
  14. How soon can one have a drink or two after surgery? I'm know I'll ask my doc this and follow his instruxtions, but I was just wondering how long it was until you had let's say a margarita?
  15. This doesn't even make sense to me. If one shot + 30 seconds didn't get you drink before the band, it shouldn't get you drunk after. Nothing about the absorption of our anatomy has changed. The alcohol still hits everything it hit before, still has to go through everything it went through, etc. The shot rule is often true for people with malabsorptive procedures (e.g. RNY), who are often told they will be able to tolerate a thimble of alcohol at most (because their absorption is all outta whack). But for us, especially with liquids, it should be as though nothing is changed at all. I can tell you that the shot + 30 seconds isn't a rule, absolutely not, because it doesn't apply to me. I've never been drunk before or after band (I've drank, just never get drunk) but I've had shots. And I've had large/strong drinks. So it would stand to reason that if it changed because of the band, it would have changed with me, but is has not. (BTW, not arguing, just trying to make sense of this. I think it might be one of the BS things our surgeons tell us to help their numbers and promote better choices... kind of like the diet that we don't need to be on because of our bands, but it helps us lose weight quicker... alcohol is going to be comparable to a milkshake in that regard).
  16. My nurse told me that alcohol would have a stronger affect. (Funny, since half a glass of wine puts me to sleep!) Maybe what Wheetsin said is right--it's a bigger deal because you won't ever have a lot in your stomach to absorb the alcohol and slow its release into the bloodstream?

    Alcohol and liver size

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about it either. Severe alcoholism causes liver problems, but a normal to slightly heavy alcohol consumption shouldn't cause any problems - and you say that you already know that your liver function tests came out fine - so you're good! At this point reducing the size of your liver is just about reducing calories - especially carbs - so you can use up the storage of glucose in your liver. Relax - as long as you follow your pre-op diet you'll be fine.

    Alcohol??????????

I had a two week pre-op diet that I had to follow. So could not have alcohol during that time. Otherwise, prior to that I was on my normal diet. I don't recall anything specific about alcohol prior to surgery. If you want to be sure, call your surgeon's office and ask. And for what it's worth, I disagree with Last Meal Syndrome. You will be able to eat your favorite foods again, just not in the same proportions.

    Alcohol??????????

Every doctor is different, mine says no alcohol 2 weeks before surgery. I also have a 12 day pre-op diet before surgery, so the previous poster's rules wouldn't apply to me, either. Check with your doctor.

    Suicidal thoughts with obesity?

I totally agree with the "Gentlespirit". When we have had enough of life by cause of a incurable disease, it is time to go. Not all of us can do this, but...... the ones that choose to take the final exit, should be able to go with friends and loved one's around. My best friend in the world had to go out alone. He had AIDS and it came to a point where living was tuffer then fighting the disease. He fought it as hard as he could for years, and finely after a year in bed with all kinds of illnesses due to the AIDS, He took the last step. That was back in 86' when there was not much you could do about AIDS but wait. Even after all these years I am still heart broken over this. He had no one to support him as he slipped away, no one to hold his hand, and make him feel a little comfortable. He was so afraid we would get into trouble over this. I blame society for this. We are so ill prepared for the end. In my 25 years clean from drugs and alcohol, I have dealt with a lot of death. Burying many friends, due to AIDS or overdose. And I see just how unprepared we are. My mother-in-law is dyeing because of her lungs, and she is scared senseless, I try and comfortable her but there is no dealing with her. When she finally goes she will be out of her mind with fear. Shame on the medical industry, they hype us up thinking we can live forever, with enough drugs. And they charge by the day, pumping more and more drugs, and more test at the cost of our......... what? Money? Insurance? Peace of Mind? Sorry about the rant but I am so upset at how the "West" deals with death. We are all going to die, we might as well get use to it from the beginning, dealing with it in a spiritually manner. I guess this has nothing to do with WLS, or losing weight, but...... I still say "If you are sick enough to eat yourself into Morbid Obesity, you are digging your own grave a forkful at a time".Butch

Am I FAT? Please tell me.

@@MichiganChic your a stunner! but I know where you are coming from. I have driven my husband and daughter to extremes because of the same question. They now don't answer. They just walk away...They are tired of it... The thing is we may quite possibly see ourselves as fat for the rest of our lives. My nut calls it a fat head...Our brains may never get to the point where we say..I made it..Why would we. food was and is an addiction that we have to be aware of the rest of our lives like alcoholism. We can't take it for granted that we have it whipped.. That said we don't want to go the other way and end up in treatment for Anorexia or Bulimia. My daughter works with a couple of patients that have had WLS and have gone the other way. They traded one addiction for another. Once we get to goal the point is to retrain ourselves to maintenance. The thrill of losing is over. It is so hard to handle the changes. And that is why we need to change the way we think... I am working on it..You need to work on it too!!!!!!
  22. ok i hate to be the killjoy, but after i go through this surgery, there is NO WAY i am going back to what I was eating before surgery. Lets Face it, we the overweight or obese are just like junkies or alcoholics. Part of recovery is not going back to those things that got you there in the first place for a very very long time or even at all! From every thing i have read, you are supposed to eat Protein first, then veggies and fruits, then if there is room carbs. I get it that you will most likely have cravings but fight them! don't give in! If you are not going to do what you know you are supposed to do, why did you have the surgery in the 1st place? I am still a few weeks out and I have already started preparing myself for what is to come. Ive gotten rid of all the crap in my house, started drinking Protein shakes twice a day. I made this decision and became informed. And although I may miss some foods, I will not cave into them, not this time!!!

    issues with alcohol after surgery

I've been making deals with myself to help me through. I can drink today if I don't tomorrow etc.. Also, I have been cutting back a little at the time on how much I allow myself. I added an app on my ipod touch that is from myfitnesspal.com and I have been putting in everything I consume. It helps to see how many calories the alcohol uses up.
  25. I've done it for 3 weeks and I'd like to think I am in the majority. I'm an ex-smoker (5 months), compulsive gambler and a week-end alcoholic. I point this out to let you know that I have less willpower than most. If I can do the pre-op without a nibble, anyone can if they want to.
