How much weight did you lose on your pre-op diet?
Reason to Believe replied to lobe22's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am on the liquid diet as of yesterday. I have been doing a modified version for 2.5 weeks, two shakes, a yogurt and a high Protein meal. I lost 15 lbs in 2.5 weeks. I have a lot more to lose though so I think it is hard to compare. You will lose weight on the liquid diet don't obsess about the number, just rejoice that it is going in the right direction. Good luck! -

I have a lunch bag that looks like a purse.. They never checked it for food. I went to the movies during my pre-op liquid diet and I took yogurt, unflavored applesauce and my Protein drink. Not sure how long the movie is.. I went to see the Revenant (a very long movie). Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
July is When my new life begins

@@MissB1982 - I'm not too nervous about the surgery itself. I have had other surgeries and usually tolerate them quite well. I am a little nervous about the diet immediately after. I'm such a picky eater and can't do artificial sweeteners. I won't do pureed meat. ICK! I picture myself eating yogurt and drinking Protein shakes for weeks on end. I guess I can do that, but it sure will get old. I'm also worried about what other people think and having them find out. I don't plan on telling anyone, but my husband said - you really have to learn to be OK with other people knowing if they find out. He doesn't want me to get torn up inside if/when someone brings it up. I see his point. Why can't something like this just be my business though? :-) I'm also thinking about the foods that will be leaving my life, at least for awhile, or maybe never eaten the same way again. I do want to change forever, so I know some of them may never come back again. I feel like I want to make sure I get some of them now, but I also want to continue to lose weight over the next month leading up to the surgery too. Everything in moderation, I suppose. -
Increasing to 90 grams of Protein?! WTH!
OKCPirate replied to JennsJourney's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I do a couple of eggs and meat in the morning, but I put pipingrock.com unflavored Protein powder in my coffee. I do a greek yogurt around 10:30 with more powder. If you do that, it will get you around 25 more grams per day. A few ounces of meat 2 hours before or after dinner will get you to that goal. -
I use both PB2 and another brand peanut powder. Love it in shakes, with cottage cheese, or yogurt.

Can I increase my protein this way?
crazyplantlady replied to reachbree's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I personally don't like the Syntrax nectars. There's a weird aftertaste or it makes the Water have a weird quality to it... I can't handle it. I think you should just try out different things until you find something that works! I had to try out several different powders before settling on GENEPRO. You can get samples of everything at GNC, and everything is heavily reviewed on Amazon. Another thing you can experiment with is mixing powders into different foods. I can mix Genepro into yogurt, pudding, even Beans and cheese and it tastes good! You can mix it into soup, tea, coffee, anything that has cheese in it, or that would taste good if it had milk in it. I think you can do the same with unjury as well. The thing that I liked more about genepro was that it was slightly more tolerant of warmer temperatures (not too hot though!) and there was more Protein in a smaller serving. Our lifestyle change is hard, and it's going to take a little bit of experimentation to figure out what works. -
I went protein crazy!

Does anyone know how long you can store a food with Protein powder mixed in? For example, I like greek yogurt mixed with vanilla Protein Powder enough that I'm thinking of mixing up a few days' worth to have for Breakfast. Is the shelf life the same as the base product (i.e. the yogurt) or does the protein make it spoil or separate or whatever, faster? Also, I know you can't add protein to hot liquids but could you mix the protein with say, cold broth and then heat it up later? Thanks in advance for your sage advice! -

I went to Star Wars about 4 days after surgery (missing it wasn't an option) and took a protein drink in my purse. At that point hydration was important. There is nothing purée friendly at a movie theatre. And 7 months out there is still not anything appropriate for me to eat.... So I don't eat at theaters. I have a meal before I go and they only last couple hours. My best advice is don't eat at movies because it is the definition of mindless snacking. If you have to have something take a Greek yogurt or a protein shake. -

I can't imagine there will be anything suitable there. Besides, snacking may not be the greatest habit to pick back up. Maybe focus on learning to enjoy the movies without snacking. If you are really concerned that you will be so hungry that you will be unable to enjoy the movie, smuggle in a Premier Protein shake or a small container of Greek yogurt. Good luck! -

Lately, a cup of Water (usually free) gets me through a movie. I am a year out so sometimes I take a Quest Protein bar. Since you are on puréed you may need to eat something before you go in the movie or take something discreetly in a cup (maybe yogurt or refried beans). A Protein shake would work, too. The only thing I could think of that would be puréed on a traditional concession stand menu is nacho cheese sauce without chips. I am sure that isn't very healthy but it might do in a pinch. Let us know what you come up with. -
Just not hungry
Stillmissing replied to Stillmissing's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I now see food as simply fuel for the body and not something that i really 'enjoy' anymore. Not sure if that's a good thing or bad, but I'm going with it for now. The good thing is, I only choose Protein (yogurt, cheese, shakes) and very little of anything else. So I know that I can at least get the protein in for the day. Water and fluids are still a challenge, but I am hearing that it will happen with time. I just have to get myself through this. Thanks for the support. -
8+ week post and vomiting slime almost daily
sondra2368 replied to rhansen7's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am 7 weeks postop and I have really bad acid reflux at night. I've noticed this especially happens after I eat chicken salad or egg salad or tuna salad or spicy fish (fished baked with red pepper). I drink liquid yogurt upon awakening in the morning to get rid of that feeling. I guess it's the mayonnaise that could be the culprit but what are my other Protein options that taste decent? Pre-op diet/post-op diet
Bufflehead replied to 8petals's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon requires being on a 48 hr clear diet before surgery. I know I could have Jello, chicken broth, cranberry/apple juice, basically anything clear. Does anyone have suggestions of other things I can consume? Tea, beef broth, miso broth, G2, Vitamin Water Zero, Propel Zero. You can get protein powders that mix well with water -- Unjury chicken soup, Syntrax Nectar fruit or tea flavors. You can buy individual size packets of those, which would probably make sense if you don't have an extended clear liquids diet post-op. What I really need suggestions for is my post-op diet. What are the best things to consume post-op that are filled with Protein? On full liquid phase: protein shakes Puree phase: Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese (Google Eggface ricotta bake for a great recipe), scrambled or poached eggs, refried beans with melted cheese. I made a lot of pureed casserole (minus the high carb ingredients) type things. Basically I would take meat, add a flavorful sauce, puree, put in a tiny little ramekin and heat in the microwave maybe with a little melted cheese on top. So, salmon with dill sauce, chicken breast with marinara sauce & mozzarella cheese, tuna with low fat roquefort dressing & swiss cheese, turkey with peanut satay sauce & jack cheese, ground bison with low carb bbq sauce & cheddar cheese -- you can do whatever works for you. How long was it until you could even try a solid? Everything will depend on the food progression your team gives you. I am sure your dietitian will give you more info as your date gets closer, but if you are curious now, call them up and ask if they can email you a copy of your post-op eating guidelines, or if you can stop by and pick up a copy. My team has extremely conservative guidelines, so I was on full liquids for four weeks, purees for four weeks, and then soft foods (easily cut with a fork) for four months. but how do I check my private messages? Someone messaged me last night, and now I can't find it to respond lol. I use the website, not the app, version of bariatric pal so unfortunately I can't help you here. Hopefully someone else can step in and provide an answer. -
Can I increase my protein this way?

I don't think there is a limit to how much protein the body can absorb, there is a limit to how much it needs for muscle repair. The rest goes into energy. http://www.quickanddirtytips.com/health-fitness/healthy-eating/know-your-nutrients/how-much-protein-can-the-body-absorb @@reachbree - I still mix some unflavored in my flavored mix. That is just personal taste. I also add a little unflavored to my yogurt. The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery website says... Q: Can I take all of the protein in one dose? A: Protein should be taken in multiple doses, across multiple meals or healthy Snacks. The body cannot absorb more than approximately 30 grams at once. Also, protein is a nutrient that helps us feel fuller, longer. If we try to include Proteins in each of our meals or healthy snacks, we’re less likely to feel hungry when it’s not time to eat. https://asmbs.org/patients/life-after-bariatric-surgery My Dr made very clear that the body can only absorb so much at one time. There is a reason we take Vitamins apart, not just because some of them interact badly with each other. -
Help? What can I do now to make it easier later?
Bufflehead replied to Dinks97420's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
--Get a MyFitnessPal account and a kitchen scale and practice weighing your food and logging it faithfully --Practice not drinking with meals or for 30 minutes after --Find a therapist/behavioral psychologist who specializes in working with weight loss surgery patients and start working on your specific issues and strategies to deal with them --Read all of these boards -- not just the pre-op boards, but the post-op boards, the general discussion boards, the success stories, to learn what you can expect, so you won't be surprised when, for example, you stop losing weight for a couple of weeks when you are 3 weeks post-op, your stomach makes weird noises, or you can eat yogurt more quickly than you thought you'd be able to after surgery. Good luck! -

I didn't puree it. I just chew it very good. I know, bad, but it really is almost liquid before I swallow. I am back today for the first time actually, so a day less than 3 weeks. It went by fast though! I just worked on school work all day and healing. I also walk everyday now. I know it's not much, but it's something! Any good ideas for pureed you have for me? @@AmberMc03 YOU WILL DO GREAT! I'm day 5 and it's not too bad. You can have sf Popsicles and yogurt! I bought strawberry Slimfast shake too. I'm also 5'1" and went in at 199.5. My goal is 115! I'm very busty as I have implants and now all this extra weight over them was starting to give me back problems. Therefore, I knew I needed to do something. I am hoping that this was the answer. Looking forward to being much thinner by my birthday on September 24. I will be 43 years old. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Calling all June '16 sleevers!

I have two protein shakes a day. That combined with greek yogurt for breakfast, and 1/4 cup of chicken for both lunch and dinner gets me over my protein goals by a good amount. In two days I have to cut back on my shakes, though. They want me to only have one a day after I start on soft foods. -
@ Yeah, I'm living at home. My mom and I both cook sometimes here and there. I figured beyond just the consistency of hot dogs that them being processed would be a little "hefty" on the sleeve so thanks for the input! I definitely want to get some hummus, I looooove it. Lentils are suggested in my book, I'll try and get some of them and for sure eggs. I'm not a huge fan of greek yogurt though, especially not savory ones, but maybe my taste has changed. I'll have to try it. I do like this one yogurt I get at Aldi's that's salted caramel and honey greek yogurt but they don't always have it. I'm going to go see if they do.

I went protein crazy!
Seastars replied to gettingsleeved1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I totally agree with you on sneaking in unflavored Protein. Pre-op, I'd add half a scoop to lentils, chilis and Soups - basically anyplace you'd add nutritional yeast (except popcorn which I didn't try). Post-op I've been adding it to broth and strained miso Soup, as well as to sugar free Jello. I also like adding flavored nectar powder to plain Greek yogurt and mixing. I'd love to see a line of savory protein powders like Nacho cheese, Curry, Ranch/Onion, Roast Turkey. Added to plain yogurt or even soy milk, they could be a nice change from sweet protein shakes! Now you've got me hungry for another shake! -
Hey everyone - it's been crazy busy here, so I've been off this site for a bit. I'm glad you're having a run of on-plan days @s_suther ! Good going!! Since you asked -- Honestly, I'd think about doubling that Protein (given how your body has adjusted to losing and depending on that protein, it seems unlikely your're converting it to sugar - but I'm no nutritionist!). If so, try to spread it out through the day. It looks like that's not much to run on. (I like adding chocolate Protein powder to nonfat Greek yogurt, sometimes with a bit of SF caramel flavor--it's wonderful! I also like deli sliced Boars' Head Golden chicken as a go-to protein snack with almost no fat or carbs, and since it's moister than turkey it goes down better for me.) My calories are about the same as before, but my nut/trainer is upping carbs slowly as long as I'm still losing. I do 75 carbs, 58 fat, 170 protein and calories end up between 1450 and 1540 most days. A few more carbs might make you feel a little better energy-wise or satiety-wise, but if you're staying keto that may not work. One thing I'd definately say helps is staying very close to the same macros every day. I tried doing that "Staying under X gms" idea, and the fluctuations in carbs caused my body to hold onto fat because it couldn't trust I'd consistently give it all the food it needed as fuel. Maybe try staying right on your 45 g carb goal? I lost a few pounds this month, which is good since a had a week were I had to do dinner meetings four in a row! About killed me, and even though I was careful and planned ahead, and restaurants were nice to tell me portion size, etc., how they cook it varies enough that I know i was way off. Anyway, I popped up to 174, and now am back to 171, so pleased at that today. I've been working my way back down from a vacation gain last year when I just ate whatever junk I wanted for too long (SO not worth it!). I"m still 3 pounds away from being back to my lowest last summer, but I did my measurements today, and they're way better than back then--Hooray! More muscle and less fat. My waist and hips are the biggest areas of loss, which is just fine with me. Good luck breaking your stall, @thecamiraye and glad you're 'accountability-ing' with us. Nice job breaking YOUR stall, @RockinRobin59 ! Funny how our bodies sometimes respond, eh? Hope everyone's doing well this Monday morning. Good to be back on! Kate
