    July Surgery

I don’t have a pre op diet either- I was JUST about to post my concern then I saw you say the same. I, too have had VSG. I’ve gained weight since my consult for conversion at the end of April and the doctor didn’t even flinch. We are proceeding as planned. Because I don’t have a pre op diet, i am having a problem with a 10 day long food funeral though... I don’t know how to stop and I am so worried my head won’t be in the right place come time to recover...

  5. My friend had bypass surgery about 10 years ago...she lost over 100 pounds, fell in love and got married at age 39. Got pregnant and delivered her first baby at age 41 with no complications. Decided to go for baby #2 and had a difficult pregnancy and her son born in December has Down Syndrome. He is adorable and she adores him but he will face a lifetime of challenges.

GASTRIC BYPASS REVISE FROM GASTRIC SLEEVE

My severe reflux disease went from me taking 2 pills a day, to now almost 3yrs later taking a total of 10 pills a day, zofran for nausea and a GI cocktail 3 times a day after the sleeve surgery. So am going to be having revision surgery from the sleeve to RNY to hopefully get rid of the reflux. I had hernia repair when I had sleeve surgery and apparently it's reopened as well. 10. I know this post is old but I had gastric surgery on 7/2/19 and it hurts every time I sip on anything. I’m freaking out about getting dehydrated but I can’t “stomach” the pain 🤦‍♀️

    October 2018 Sleevers

Hi everyone! I was converted from lapband to gastric sleeve on 10/1/2018. I have lost 67 lbs going from 227 to 160. My goal is 155! After lots of consideration and advice from doctors I went again and got a full tummy tuck and breast lift on Wednesday! I am sooooooooo thrilled, I never though I would be here in my life. Everyone keep up the great work!

    Struggling with Pre-op diet

Pre-OP suck$ hang in there. The not chewing really gets to all of us. Take a walk, take a nap, take another shower! I did cheat with tuna twice, lol. The purpose is to de-carb your system, remove glycogen stores from the liver so it is easier to lift out of the way for surgery, and get you ready to burn fat. I lost about 10 pounds, you will make it. Be strong.
  13. You are right, no one needs a food cop (especially if they have no education or experience to bring). WLS patients need to be accountable to themselves because that is where it matters, no one else can do it for you. You have to trust yourself. Do you need someone to tell you to brush your teeth or take a shower? Are you 10 years old? Everyone knows what to eat, and everyone must learn to navigate the journey.

    Revision to RNY

I had a revision from sleeve to bypass in March. I do not have any more heartburn—that’s completely resolved. I have had a much harder time eating this time around and still do not have solid stool. As a result, I lost 50 lbs since my revision which is more than I ever planned to be honest. I was successful with the sleeve—losing 110 and only gaining back 10 lbs over 5 years. But the heartburn was too much. The recovery has just been harder. But as a trade off I’m seeing numbers on the scale I never thought I’d see.
  17. I woke up in pain, complained, and they switched me to something else. They sent me home with 10 Oxys and I didn’t need them. Once I was out of the hospital (I stayed for two nights) the pain was manageable without medication.
  18. This is where you have to practice some real commitment to your long term goals. Develop some mantras that are really meaningful to you and they will help pull you through temptations. There will be temptations for the rest of your life! My three little sayings that help me keep my resolve are: I'M NEVER GOING BACK! (I am determined to do whatever it takes to keep from being obese again! If that means walking every day or resisting pizza, I will do it.) I WILL HAVE THIS AGAIN - JUST NOT NOW. (You will get pizza again - just not now. I had my first piece last week, and honestly, it didn't taste as good as I remembered! I've made 2 full Mexican meals for family events, and made 4 birthday cakes during this time, and this little saying got me through them all.) Delayed gratification is a really important skill to develop.) IT'S JUST NOT WORTH IT. (That taste of ice cream or bite of dessert is just not worth it. It will create more cravings, lead to further temptations and slips, and will just mess up my head for my lifelong goal of health. It will jack up my insulin level which leads to more fat storage instead of fat burning. The taste lasts 10 seconds tops, but the results can be lifetime. Our health IS worth it - more than that silly bite.) Hope this helps. Having determined resolve is one of the chief markers of WLS success, according to some research. We have got to get honest and recognize the games we have been playing with food. It is hard, no doubt about it. If your coping skill for stress was eating, then you have to find new coping skills. The little sayings are one of mine. Exercise is the other. Whatever works for you, but you have to develop strategies that will get you through the temptations for the rest of your life. Preop is the best place to start practicing. I also found it very helpful to use the preop time to get rid of caffeine, soda and sugar. It's MUCH easier to get through the withdrawal prior to surgery. Surgery is hard enough by itself.
  19. Ask your doctor for liquid pain medication. I had Tylenol with codeine. 10 ML and I was out. Hang in there! You had MAJOR surgery. Take the pain medication, get sleep, keep sipping, you will feel better. I'll check your posts daily. Or you can email me. Brian@DrBrianSays.com You will start feeling better. Keep walking also. It gets better. I had my surgery June 20, took pain meds twice a day, afternoon and evening for 6 days. Now, none. You did the right thing by having this surgery. Sip, walk, sleep, repeat.

    Under 200lbs!!!

And I am there also, and it feels So Fine! In fact , it feels so fine, I want to finish my way to goal! Less than 25 to go! And I will get there, even against my PCP who has gotten a case of Cold Feet, told me "I only wanted YOU to lose 70% of your excess weight, you are now at 68.3 -in 10 months. " Well well be careful what you wish for, You Were the one who sent me on this journey, dancing around chanting " You're so obese you're going to die!" A little late to develop a case of the Whim-wahs, Junior! Didn't you have faith I could do this or were you talking for the sheer joy of talking and you thought I would tune you out? Well sometimes you reap the whirlwind. You and Dr Needleman fomented this, they have let me now free-style, apparently I am not so enchanting to follow the progress of, no clinic appointment until August 14th, and I suspect it is only with Nurse- Practitioner Valerie. Looks to me ,if Dr N doesn't think I require and new surgicalopenings, he can find something better to do with his time. So I am down to you, my orthopaedic who is thrilled I am putting less weight pressure on my artificial knee joints, my sleep doctor who is off throwing darts to decide whether she wants to d/c my CPap, my ENT who agreed to help you watch my thyroid nodules, my urologist who, though I have microscopic blood in my urine, doesn't seem concerned and my cardiologist is 3 counties away, not supposed to see her until January 2020, So "out of Sight ;Out of Mind" there. So are you going to cry big Crocodile Tears 💦 because my weight is declining or are You going to be some assistance to me? I see you in 2 weeks, better formulate my plan or care before then. Enough Said?

Loose skin - how long to tighten?

I'd read to expect $8k-$10K per procedure, with the lower body lift (LBL) counting as two procedures since they're doing front and back. But for the rest - arm lift, breast lift, etc - count on about $8K-10K each. I found this to be pretty much on the money during my consults (I went on three consult visits) - the quotes I got were pretty much what I expected. I had an LBL, arm lift, and a breast lift - it was done in two visits a few months apart - and my total bill was right around $40K. I'm retired - so I didn't have to worry about work. However, plastic surgery was much more painful and a tougher recovery than gastric bypass was. After the first week or so, though, it was more discomfort than pain (and that discomfort lasted for a long time), and I was driving after about 10 days. I guess I could have gone back to work after two or three weeks (if I worked, that is...) I also got a quote from Dr. Francisco Sauceda in Mexico. He was quite a bit cheaper - it's been awhile, but I think it was around $26K for everything. But I decided I'd rather go to someone within driving distance from here in case I had any complications. It'd be a lot easier than having to fly somewhere (esp out of the country) if I couldn't find a doctor here to deal with complications.
  22. I had my sleeve done Nov 2018 and all I remember my surgeon telling me is to drink water nothing but water and if I can get the protein shakes in great if not then water. You have to sip. It's not like it use to be where we could just gulp our food and drinks down. It takes time. As far as the pain I remember taking pain meds for atleast a week, mind you I had a major surgery at 13 weeks pregnant where I was cut from my belly button all the way down and didn't take 1 pain medicine because of my baby. But in this case I had to. It hurt to cough, and get out of bed and even car rides that's why I slept on the couch for atleast a good 2 weeks. And make sure to get up and walk about 10 min every hour it will help with the gas in your belly. It does get so much easier and you did an awesome job making the choice to have the surgery. At this point eating is not a priority. Sipping water, walking frequently are important. And of course try to sip on your protein shakes. You won't be able to drink 64 oz and have 3 shakes a day but it is the goal. You will eventually be able to do it. Sent from my SM-S727VL using BariatricPal mobile app
  23. And So Much I envy you who can chug! 10 months and I still can't really. In fact I had an osteoporosis- preventing INFUSION instead of the more Traditional pills because my PCP felt I couldn' t swallow at a fast enough rate to have SUCCESS. Yeah, every little thing in LIFE has a detrement, evident or NOT. So I am a Little jealous, everybody else seems worried about stretchage, I am more worried Precious Pouch has healed like Petrefied Wood, has no expandability, little if any peristaltic activity, drains into my jejunem by gravity alone. Nobody wants to sit down, explain the further mechanics of it all. Oh I had the Freshman info prior to my SURGERY, now I need the Sophmore-Junior level tutorial , Bariatric Recoveries 301 or 302, I need a more succinct, more informative explaination. My best hope, I still have a August appintment with Dr Upchurch, my gastroenterologist, they never canceled it when they did my last endoscopy. Maybe, just maybe, I can get him to sit still and talk to me some. It would help to just spend my appointment time talking this over. I feel like I was given a small faxed pamphlet, now let's get into the ❤of the matter, if I am going have this model body I need a more in-depth owners manual.📈📉📝

    Should I be offended?!

EDIT: Only just noticed this is a year old thread...hey ho! Hope all ended well. —————————————————— So sorry you had to deal with that crap. Ignore him. As has been fantastically said I’d address afterwards if you can’t shake it off. They’re almost all narrow specialists with god complexes. All the nursing staff will tell you to ignore them on subjects outside their remit. My surgeon has the best mortality stats and outcomes as well as numbers of procedures for this part of the country, but he is a social disaster zone outside pure factual consults and theatre...his secretary and the ITU staff confirmed as much. Just before sending me home 2 days post op he said “Great, now eat what you did before, just less” NUT was there too and her eyes near rolled out of her head. At 3 month follow up he spent 10 minutes not making eye contact and mumbling aggressively when I asked why I was having no post surgery bloods until 1 year. Not ideal, but my surgery and post surgical recovery has been great, my GP did interim bloods and his NUT is fantastic. If he had sufficient self awareness to backfill for his failings by recruiting her then some credit due, but kid gloves are off next consult. If we fall out then so be it. Sincerely hope you don’t let it get you down and find a great bariatrics aware fitness specialist to backfill for his muppetry xx

    Adhesions and RnY?

Mine was concerned a little too, when I had my GallBladder/Appendectomy in 1983, instead of a Right Subcostal which was traditional in those days , I had a Right Para- median, just to the right of my navel, 3 inches above, 4 inches below, yeah anybody looking and I as a rule only flash it at medical personnel, can see the external manifestation but how scarred and adhesional- how do you like that word? I could be internally? Would it affect his trochar placements? Would my belly inflate with CO2 perfectly would I be lop- sided? But all went well , ended up with 6 incisions including one in the upper navel, the lower was taken up by my laparoscopic tubal ligation years ago. While I was still a little swollen it looked like my navel was trying to blow kisses, Weird City! But now, after 10 months they have become a part of Stretch Mark Land, unless you were familiar with his or another Bariatric Surgeon' Handiwork, you won't find them easily. The very few times I was peeved with him, I remember the initials are B.S., I chuckle and get over my Mental Temper Tantrum quickly!
