First Pre-op Diet Weigh In Blues

it did even out; I lost 10 lbs by my next weigh in! Now it's almost time for my 3rd and I'll be starting my period next week so it's probably going to appear up on the scale again due to bloat. but at least I know that'll go down on its own!

    Pre-op and obsessed?

Or me either at 10 months, and thought I was perfectly ready, cool, calm, ready to start living the Bariatric life. And I read all the "pie in the sky" pamphlets I could get my chubby little paws on. Nobody mentioned my Evil new Friend. Stoma-stenosis and his sidekick jejunal ulceration. And I did not realize it takes it seems to take forever to heal. I have been on Carafate every 6 hours since October 12, 2018. I used to joke at autopsy the medical examiner would find my spine consisted of Halls cough drops, well now it has changed to oval white caplets of Carafate. And I am happy- proud of losing 125 since surgery , but Me Oh My, what I have gone through to get there! And when I try to talk to someone about my qualms, all they see is the thinner, more shapely body like a so-called Normal woman and they tune me out. I fear I will turn into a thinner corpse, easy on the pallbearer but actrifle harsh for me. And I am still on pureed, protein shakes, soups, broths and approved no calorie liquids. Know anyone else on basically a pre- surgery liver shrinking diet for almost a year? Except on it I got a 300 calorie Lean Cuisine every evening . Now I don't even have that! And when I try to advance my diet, Precious Pouch slaps some sense into me by vomiing EVERYTHING up. Why.can't I get a little honesty? If I am going to be a Gastrointestinal Cripple the rest of my fool life, OWN UP TO IT, I promise I will be less angry than I am now being ignored by the Clinic for 4 months. I reached out once, was told I was delusional, there was nothing wrong with me, this after not being able to keep anything down for 16 hours, and was advised to seek mental health help in my County. Relatively certain we have no one here. Local ER dreads seeing me, not sure how to treat anything beyond basics. They say "What can we do for you? We know little if anything about recovering RNY patients." Well my Bariatric surgeon is in Columbus, 50 miles away , Tomkitten and I don't drive, local transportation group wants 2 weeks prior notice so they will transport for scheduled appointments, but anything emergent, Forget about it! So I chug along, venting on here, praying still there is a Good Resolution to all this. Less than 25 pounds to Goal, now my PCP who I thought was in my corner is getting some sort of Cold Feet. Told me last week he only expected me to lose 70% of my excess weight, I have lost 68.3% and have 2 months before it's a full year. Some people you just can't please & he was the one 2 years ago dancing around ,singing. " Obesity gonna Kill You!" now I'm too thin? Oh come on, you were one of my Weight Loss Godfathers, and now you're backing Down? When I need some on to talk to about this, not even YOU WILL HELP? I feel rather abandoned by all, so I keep trying my best, and wistfully praying it is enough.

    What was your moment?

I never really had a moment just a lot of things that collided and me randomly thinking "bariatric surgery"! I don't know why it crossed my mind, but it did so I looked up if it was covered and it was so I started the process. I have been thin most of my life, but when I got pregnant with my son I gained 70lbs. With my first i had a military doctor and they did not listen to me at all. I knew something was wrong I was gaining like crazy, but not over eating I couldn't eat I was throwing up all the time. I had preeclampsia too and they made me go a week overdue because they wouldn't listen. Delivered a 10 1/2lb baby! With my second child 5yrs later my new doc said she thinks I'm borderline with gestational diabetes thats why my son was so big and I was gaining. They monitor me with my daughter and I gained 35lbs and lost it. But my PCOS kicked in inbetween having my children and it caused me to have a metabolic disorder and through the years I have just been gaining. With PCOS comes a ton of symptoms which is the weight gain, acne, abnormal hair growth on the neck and chin. That is what I hate the most. I knew losing the weight would help with the symptoms, but PCOS weight is different and extremely hard to lose because of the metabolic disorder. So that's what made me think of bariatric surgery. I'm a size 18 and weight 255.... I don't take pictures with my kids and I feel so bad. I'm ashamed of my weight even though technically its not fault but my condition that I happen to be born with ughhh lucky me! I was starting to back out of not wanting the surgery. Then some kid called me fat from the school bus passing our house. That hurt my feelings and pushed me more into pursuing the surgery. I don't want to embarrass my kids eventually when they get older and notice. My son is 10 and he tells me nothing it wrong with me and that I'm pretty lol bless his heart! I got a candid picture of me the other day and omg I am the same as you that I questioned is that me?!? I swear when I look in the mirror i dont see it... I see a thin person, but honey my eyes are deceiving me! Ill attach the pic... ugh so embarrassing! Anyways my surgery is July 23rd and after seeing this picture I cant waittttttt for my surgery to come. 2 more wks! Sent from my SM-G965U using BariatricPal mobile app

    What was your moment?

My moment was honestly maybe 2years ago, diet and workout wasn’t working for me so I did my own research on WLS. I didn’t do anything about seeing a surgeon back then because I didn’t know how. Fast forward to November 2018, I went in for an emergency gallbladder removal because I was in excruciating pain. Then here came my one week check up but the surgeon who did the surgery didn’t have an opening for over 2 weeks but she still wanted me to see someone. So they made my appointment and I met with the surgeon and at the end of my follow up he asks “by the way has anyone talked to you about weight loss surgery?” (Now for most people I think would have gotten offended but I didn’t). I told him no but I am interested. Turns out he was a bariatric surgeon. He gave me his card to call to make a consultation appointment and I did, the minute I got home. Dec 5 2018 came and I had my consult and at the end he asked me if I would like to go forward with the process of getting approved by insurance and I said. Got approved May 30th and I will be getting VSG on a August 19th 2019

Well good for you gabybab- what I did- my jeans and pants also getting pretty loose so bought inch-wide non- roll elastic from w-mart and ran it through the waistband, a little more wear that way of my 20s, that will have until I can afford 18s and less. I had dropped from 4x-5x down to 3x, then when my PICC line was d/cd the end of February, I dropped 30 pounds ka- thunk, never was in 22-24, went down to 20s. Actually bought 3 pair of leggings in size 19 junior, before this last time of weight-dropping I would not have had the "guts" to wear them, my legs looked that much like a fat sausage, now I have definition and shapliness starting to show. Shoot I KNEW I WAS CUTE, I just kept it hidden for many years. Don't know who I will finally resemble, have gone through looking like relatives, dead ones- the other day I looked in the mirror and saw my maternal grandmother Cora's face. Now even with post- menopausal shrinkage, I'm still 5ft8in, Grandma Cora wouldn't have made 5ft4in unless she stood on a stool or tried to stand tippy-toes. Oh well as long as I don't resemble a cattle thief or embezzler, I'm cool! Never had my picture on the wall of local Post Office, and at 73 I doubt I ever will! When I had to go to my County Courthouse to pick up a copy of Late Lamented and my Marriage licence , it was the first time I had been there since our application 44 and a half years before. This proves either I lived a felony- free existence or I am duller than dishwater. Suspect it might be the latter!😄😝😀

    Not telling anyone

My mother & my sister were the only ones I was going to tell. I ended up telling a few church friends, mainly because one had the VGS done 10 years ago & the DIL of another had it done 2 years ago. I’m not really keeping a secret, but I’m not blasting it out all over either.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

This surgery is more about relearning how to eat, learning what full feels like, and fixing our emotional issues as opposed to never being allowed to eat these 5000 foods ever again because you had fat surgery. You had a couple things over a special weekend. As long as you don’t eat them often then it’s fine. I see nothing wrong with a 90/10 approach. Eating healthy 90% of the time w 10% of indulgences. No cheat days just a cheat snack or cheat entree or cheat side dish once or twice a week max. If you find a food that triggers massive cravings I would avoid that, but don’t beat yourself up over this. I find myself craving crunchy thing now. My dietician thinks it’s related to the long stretch of just liquid and soft foods. She recommended skinny pop popcorn instead of chips. Not as crunchy as I want but it satisfies the craving.
  10. Healthy-Life2: I had the lapband put in about 10 Yrs ago, and I know the gas pains were tough for awhile, since they had to inflate your insides to operate. That went away pretty quickly. Sounds like they did not give you enough pain meds. Also, you were eating food 5 days after surgery? I think I was on a liquid diet for 2 weeks. No wonder you were vomiting. The first few weeks are not great, but I slept as much as possible. I was exhausted. Unfortunately, I had to have my band removed ten yrs later (scar tissue grew over the port.) I am going back in for gastric bypass. Wish me luck.

    Pounds lost

Since I last posted I have officially hit 10 months post op on July 3rd. I started at my high weight of 308 pounds two weeks before surgery and I am currently 173.8 pounds. So many things have changed since my last update. I have gone vegan and so many aspects of my health has improved beyond what the WLS has done for me. So that is amazing. But also I might have an ulcer so I am scheduled for an endoscopy later this month. So things have been up and down but hopefully everything comes back fine. However, back to a lighter note my first picture is me right before surgery and the second is me from two days ago. The changes have been dramatic but so worth it. I am hoping to lose another 20 pounds and I hope to make it to the 150's by my one year mark.
  12. Sorry you experienced so much pain, your surgery team did not manage it correctly. I had a hiatal hernia repair at the same time so swallowing was a bit tough. But they gave me this 1000mg OFIRMEV Tylenol IV med and I did not believe it would have worked that well, but it did plus a couple dilaudid doses and that was it. Took gabepentin home and did not use it. My knee replacement surgery 10 years ago - I cried in my sleep for 6 months and was on hydrocodone the whole time and it was pure misery - but I can dance up a storm. All we can offer is that it does get better, and you will recover. Hang in there the best is coming.

    June 2019 Surgery Siblings!

Hello ladies and the one other guy, I don't think is even still with us....I haven't checked in in a bit. Just wanted to stop by and say all is well, feeling great.....or I was until today. I finally went and got a Black Card membership at PF and went today. Managed 3 miles on the treadmill, walking mostly but I was able to do a couple of intermittent jogs. Did some leg presses and then some ab killers....5 sets of 30 Russian Twists with a 10 lb medicine ball. My abs were on FIRE and I thought that would be the one I would regret but as it turns out, the leg presses were a bit too much, I can barely walk now and almost fell on my face a little while ago trying to go down the stairs. My legs are like jello. LMAO As much as I am hurting, I still feel awesome that I went and was able to do as well as I did. Other victories....Before surgery I was in a tight 46' jeans, I can now get into 40s but they're a bit tight so I'll stay in the loose 42s another week or so. Guy at the gym gave me a 3xl that I asked for but then he threw me a Large and said there's an extra one for you to set yourself a goal. Hell yeah!! Started on soft foods yesterday. I can tell it's going to be hard to get in the protein goals with just food so I guess i will keep some shakes handy. It wasn't so bad with the sleeve but with this revision, a spoonful of food fills me up. It's crazy. I make a bowl of scrambled eggs, mix in some unjury unflavored protein and just eat a bite every 10-15 minutes. Hope everyone is doing well. Best Wishes.

    I'M NEW HERE~MY INTRODUCTION

sure they probably meant 242, if you can drop 109 pounds in under a week, I definitely had the WRONG SURGERY! Taken me 10 months to lose down to where I am now, and at least One doctor, my PCP, thinks I dropped too much too quickly. Yeah the self-said man who used dance around the exam room singing " Obesity gonna Kill You" at every time I showed up in his office. Now he tells me I was only supposed to 70% excess body weight, gosh I NEVER KNEW he had set me a quota, anyhow I have lost 68.3% and he is panicking. Some days you please everyone so you gotta please yourself. With a salute to Eric Hillard(known as Ricky) Nelson, gone too soon and oh the Musical Gap since his passing! I wasn't as much an Elvis freak as I was for Ricky Nelson.
  17. Thanks all. I have lost 10 lbs in 7 days. Little discouraged cause I thought it would have been a little more with only “eating” about 400 calories but happy that it’s still coming off. Maybe it is the salt. I switched to a reduced sodium broth - I’ll try the regular and see what happens. Thanks for the suggestion.

290-195 weight loss 3months post op Revision surgery date 4/2/19 233lbs

  19. it took 18-20 months. I lost 16 lbs the first month, then about 10 lbs (give or take) until about month 6. Then it dropped down to about 8 lbs - then down to like 5. After the first year, it was only 2 or 3 lbs a month. But I was very compliant with my program - I almost never went off - and the weight kept gradually dropping.

    What was your moment?

After a good 10 years dealing with life and alcoholism I finally gave it up and once my mind was clear of alcohol I noticed geez I'm in my 30s and over 300lbs.. I don't want to still be fat and unhealthy at 40.. I need to make a change and I found surgery will help me greatly in getting my life back on track...
  23. My wife and I both had gastric sleeve last year (Sept 2018 and Nov 2018) - my surgery was ~3 months before hers - it's been unbelievably successful for both of us as far as weight loss. That said, our post-op course has been very different. I went into surgery having been an avid (albeit morbidly obese) weight lifter for 5+ years while my wife dabbled on and off but was not consistent with exercise. Post-op I got back into lifting as soon as I could while my wife was diagnosed with a non-invasive ductile cell carcinoma of the breast which turned into lumpectomy/breast reduction - she's totally fine but it has resulted in her being in recovery for a significantly greater part of the past 6 months. She is just now finally cleared for lifting. She looks great but even she is itching to get to the gym because she can't ignore the difference between the two of us. I look and feel better at 40 than I did when she met me at 19. My energy levels are high, my physical abilities are high (we "hiked" a mountain this week and I basically ran up the mountain) and she couldn't keep up. She looks great but she has clearly lost significant lean mass, strength and endurance. She's interested in weight lifting because she's watching my transformation and while it hasn't been her thing in the past she clearly sees the change with me. Time will tell if she sticks with it but I've come to believe strength training, in some form, should be a central focus for those of us who can tolerate it. Not saying everyone will be squatting body weight, but some form of resistance exercise is important IMO.
  24. Thanks for the info Bill. I did do further research on Dr. Illan and was his accreditations and memberships. I don’t see VSG listed as subspecialty or clinical area of practice on the FACS.org website: Subspecialties and Areas of Clinical Concentration Bariatric (Severe Obesity) Procedures Bariatric (Severe Obesity) Procedures biliopancreatic diversion gastric banding jejunoilial bypass laparoscopic gastric banding laparoscopic gastric bypass roux-en-Y gastric bypass Is this procedure one that he performs often and just isn’t listed? I also saw Oasis Hospital Tijuana, BCN Active 08/2016—Present Hospital Regional No.1 IMSS Tijuana, BCN Active 01/2011—Present listed as affiliated hospitals. Can you clarify where his surgeries are performed? I appreciate your prompt responses!
