  1. Very few people here get their sleeves revised. There are a large number of band to sleeve revisions. Every case of revision I have seen the surgeon is to blame. Either the sleeve was too big, the surgery wasn't done properly or the patient got the surgery more than 5 years ago when they did sleeves larger as a rule of thumb. ~Cheri
  2. Everything I underlined, especially the "finally" comment is cause for concern. Plus, if she was still having issues, and discharged without further diagnostics, I'd be looking for a different surgeon. She's almost 6 weeks post-op, and still having difficulties without any resolution. Chronic pain 6 weeks out is NOT normal, and should be considered a cause for alarm. I dealt with a surgeon disregarding my concerns with my band for about 3-4 months, and it ended up causing me issues with my revision. I left his practice because as a patient I learned you have to be your own advocate and do what is best for your health, and quality of life.
  3. Yes I've started the process. I have a edg to have on Nov 6th. Once they confirm the GERD it's off to have the revision that's the only thing needed to do atm the Doc said. I had called the insurance company they said all they need is a doctors necessity and then we're good to go. Sorry it took me do long Baller mom
  4. I've decided not to have revision. I've read of so many complications and I'm taking my chances with theBile reflux, Gerd, esophageal spasms I have now. Even though they bypass and you don't feel burn anymore, it does nothing for spasms and also the ulcers which GB is famous for. I've read of people on feeding tubes and more surgery to remove the ulcers. One young woman is really having a hard time. They have no more stomach to work with. No, not all have problems with GB but a lot do. So I guess it is what it is for me. There is a new procedure called Stretta Procedure and it helps the LES stay closed. Researching this for sleeve patients. Thanks to all for your input.
  5. Lisa I am so sorry for what you are going through. I am not sure if you are in grief counseling but my feeling is that working through emotional pain while you await the revision would help. I am sure you know this but coffee is terrible for you when you are having esophagus issues. You are using/abusing it instead of eating properly. Last spring I went through an emotional downturn and couldn't eat comfortably. I was scared I had a sleeve "issue" but what happened was that I stopped eating, lost my appetite, felt horrible from poor eating, felt too ill to eat..and of course felt even worse from too little food/too low carbs. . Well, as soon as I started addressing the emotional issue and then eating food like a prescription I felt alot better. Over time both my mental and physical health improved and I felt good again. My appetite came back! I know this doesn't fix the GERD etc. But maybe you can start feeling better in the meantime by cutting the coffee and eating clean healthy food. I have suffered painful losses too and haven't been the best at taking care of myself. I bet our departed loved ones would want us to though. I wonder if you would get more responses on the revision in the bypass forums?
  6. Yes I was calling around to for the revisions surgery uggh dont think my insurance will pay for it. Just ashamed of myself went through all that pain and gaining.. I really have been embarrassed
  7. I am in Perth WA. It's hard to find Aussies out there that have had gastric bypass hey? I think that the whole revision thing kind of makes us paranoid..I felt like a bit of a failure after the band..so was also worried that the bypass wouldn't work...I had my op on the 13 th may...it took 8 hours for them to do because of all the adhesions..felt pretty crook afterwards...I've lost 10 kg..so pretty happy with that. After three weeks I'm the lightest I have been in about 5 years.. 4 kgs in a week is awesome..I'm classified as a light weight at starting weight of 103kg. How bout you.?? How did you find the op..how are you feeling.?? Hi and welcome..nice to see some more Aussies...getting tired of converting to pounds lol. I am in Perth.. I had band to bypass revision on the 13 th may...pity u have to wait three months..but it will be worth the wait. Hello the long walk home...I am also booked for surgery on 7th October band to GBP in Brisbane....I am having the surgery done at the same time...I didn't want the GBP wanted sleeve but told can't after having a band :-( I am also nervous and worried about complications etc especially hair loss!!! would love to keep updated on how you go
  8. hi LuckyG well done. I am having a revision of my Bypass as I have put on some weight and I think its due to my stretching my pouch. the past months I had to leave my job due to arthritis in my hip and got into a grazing cycle, although it didnt click for a while, of that was what I was doing. with the sweet tooth, that is interesting. I aways had a sweet tooth and was hoping my taste buds would change or at least get severe dumping but the only dumping I got was dizzyness and sweating. would love to catch up with you if possible to get some handy tips from you. I live in mooloolaba on the coast.
  9. There are a few long timers but most don't post here anymore. I revised from band 2.5 years ago after 10 years banded. I have had great success with sleeve...if you click on my profile you can see details.

Day 4 of 3 Week Liquid Diet

Good luck 3 weeks is long time- I was just advised I will need 2 week Pre-Op diet due to revision and need to reduce liver as much as possible. Luckily I like shakes (At least for now-That may change after 2 solid weeks of them), and I will be on diet from May 3 thru 3-17, so not during any major holiday.
  11. Artsong, have you started the process yet, to revision.

    Not wanting to eat

I have the same thing going on with me. I am 4 years out 8/9 VSG and 14 months revised RNY. My relationship with food has changed. Its a chore to eat and I am not in the mood most of the time. My weight is starting to drop again. I weighed in at 148.8 this morning. So I made some mac n cheese to go with some leftover meatloaf. I was actually excited to eat, lol. Yeah, so depending on what the food is makes a lot of difference too. I didnt have this issue with VSG and I think its because I still felt normal when I ate and could still eat what I wanted just in smaller portions. My views and relationship with food in maintenance were the same pre surgery as far as what I ate. RNY not the same. I dont have the same sense of fullness as I did before I ever had surgeries or the way it did with VSG. In fact I mostly dont feel anything but if I eat one bite over I am deathly ill and the same thing goes if I eat the wrong foods. So I feel this is why I not interested and I rarely feel hungry so why bother . SIGH

    Gastric Plication

No plication - I got the sleeve. I decided against the plication because it was too new. Finding this forum was a big help in making my decision. For a long time I thought I had no options - all I knew was that my band had to go and I was terrified of gaining weight after it was gone. Lots of research and finding Dr. Aceves convinced me that VSG was the way to go. He has the most experience with lap-band to sleeve revisions. I wanted to make sure I went to someone who would know how to deal with my possible complications. Of course, your mileage may vary... :-)
  14. Most surgeons do a 2 week Optifast diet beforehand - which is a liquid Meal Replacement that pretty much tastes like powdered lips and a..eholes! Im sure that's what they make it from. The purpose is to shrink your liver, makes the surgery easier (especially since they do it laparascopically). I think a lot depends on your state of health beforehand though, loads of people are on medication for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, all the problems bought on by obesity. I was lucky to have this opportunity before I got to that stage, and I didnt have to do the preop liquid diet as my BMI was 35 and I didnt have a fatty liver. I did have pre op blood tests to check levels of all sorts of stuff and saw a respiratory physician although I cant figure out why that is. Whether or not it works for you easily I guess comes down to your issues around eating. Again I'm very lucky - I was a big eater but not a disordered one, hence take away the hunger and I dont think about food at all these days, I mean that literally. It's like a miracle. If you have more serious food issues, terrible trouble controlling binging, evening snacking, you eat for emotional reasons (who doesnt?) then I suspect you'll come across situations where your head says you want to eat despite what your body says. Many people here suffer that and many of them have, if not beaten it, beaten it back into submission. It can be done. It's way easier to fight your demons if you're not truly starving at the time. I think you also need to assess lifestyle factors that have caused you to become overweight. For me it's disorganisation - lack of time, and a big part due to the fact that with a 2 year old in tow, I just cant be bothered going to the supermarket even though I need to and then I'm faced with no food in the house, buying quick and easy junk etc. That's not going to magically disappear, I'm really going to have work on that. Dont let all the insurance approval issues you may read about here frighten you either - it's not like that in Australia. You will need private health insurance, which I'm assuming you have - or if you're very lucky your surgeon will do it under the public system, but there's very few that do. And self pay is often not an option here in Australia either, in case revision surgery is necessary, the surgeon's get nervous about people being unable to pay them. Its also way easier to get approved - in Australia they will consider people with a BMI of 30+ because they realise that most people only hit that weight on the way through to even higher weights, and that really statsitically anyone who has gotten that fat is very very unlikely to lose the weight and keep it off any other way.
  15. Hello All, This has been quite a journey for me. I had a lapband done in June of 2009 and due to a flipped port I decided to go ahead and have a revision surgery. I had lost 70 pounds with the lapband but had gained it all back. I suffer from depression and bipolar 1 and I didn't have the coping skills necessary to FOCUS on a health lifestyle. Well, I have been given a new lease on life. I am loving my vertical sleeve. I make better food choices and have not had a single problem in the past five weeks. I also have a therapist and am taking the proper medications. What a great opportunity I have been given to be able to regain sound physical and mental health. Loving life and wishing the best to all of my fellow sleevers.

    Gastric Bypass complications

I had a complication from anesthesia, not from the bypass itself. Anesthesia caused my heart rate to shoot up and not come back down. Slowly over the past few weeks it is lowering on it's own. It is likely nothing to worry about, but it's being checked out anyway. I was a revision, so my risk of complications is higher and I still had a very successful surgery. My pain was minimal, my food tolerance has been incredible, and I feel more normal than I ever have!
  22. The mini bypass has been kicking around for a long time - it was around the periphery of bariatrics some twenty years ago when my wife and I first started looking into WLS, and it's still there today, not having achieved mainstream status (and many, if not most, US insurance companies still don't cover it.) in the meantime, the BPD/DS, VSG and now the SIPS/SADI have gone mainstream, gaining acceptance by the ASMBS and insurance industry. It would pay to understand why that is. When I last looked into these things, 2-3 years ago, ASMBS was fairly positive about the SIPS/SADI, but they didn't yet have the data to recommend it; they apparently do now. I would suggest looking through their site to see if they have any current opinion on the MGB and why it doesn't get on their recommended list. Amongst the MX surgeons, the MGB seems to mostly be sold as a cheaper alternative to the RNY rather than a technically better one. Classically, bile reflux is one of the problems with these simplified, single anastomosis procedures. There are claims that some techniques have been developed to mitigate that problem, but I don't know how much of that is real progress and how much is marketing. The MGB does seem to be more mainstream in other countries, so there may be something to the claims of improvement, and it simply lost its best opportunity to be sold to the US industry and authorities. Given that, I would be apprehensive about getting it done while living here in the states, if for no other reason than long term support - how many US doctors, bariatric or otherwise, understand it, and how to treat you in the years ahead should there be a problem. It's something like owning a French car here in the States - parts and service are a problem. My wife has a DS, which has something of that issue, despite being mainstream and approved, as it is still something of a niche procedure, with few surgeons understanding it. It, however, has the redeeming value of having demonstrably better performance - both initial loss and most particularly regain resistance; the MGB doesn't, as it's not markedly different than the RNY or VSG in performance. Have you had your GERD evaluated as to its cause? A hiatal hernia or shape issue can usually be corrected while still maintaining the sleeve, though some surgeons may not be well practiced at that and would simply revise to a bypass to correct it (the old "VSG + GERD=you need an RNY" thing rather than fixing the basic problem - it might need an revision, or it might not.) In correcting regain, these revisions seem to be only moderately successful - count on maybe twenty pounds or so - about what one would expect from the intense dieting required around surgery time, and one can expect similar results from a hiatal hernia repair. Basically, you have already learned how to eat around a small stomach, so shrinking it further with a revision doesn't yield nearly as good a result as your virgin procedure. Some do show remarkable improvement, but they seem mostly to be those who take the regain seriously and swear to "not let that happen again" and really buckle down and get with the program. One can almost consider the revision to be a placebo. If I were looking to seriously tackle a regain problem, I would lean more toward the BPD/DS as that more directly addresses the metabolic problem, though not the GERD as it retains the sleeve - that would remain an issue as to whether the sleeve itself is the cause of it and that can be corrected.

    Band gone forever!

Hey Pete!! Just wanted to say hi! Your post caught my eye since I'm in the Phoenix area too and have been banded for (most of) the past 10 years. My band was removed for slip and erosion in 2005 and replaced in India in 2006. Had success with my first band, but never with my second! I am going to Mexico (though different doc and hospital) for a revision now that I have had 2 separate pouch dilations. I am so over my band and would go tomorrow if I didn't have to change my name on my passport and renew my husbands! lol Anyway, glad to hear of your successful revision and was wondering how you're feeling now that you're home and getting back into daily life! and again, thought I would introduce myself since it seems we've had some similar paths and live so close!
