  1. I had mine for seven years without any real issues. I loved my band. Lost over a hundred lbs. and kept it off until the unfill for the sleeve surgery. My doctor suggested the revision to the sleeve because I had a dilated pouch for the second time. I could have just removed half the liquid and let my stomach rest for 3 months but I opted for the sleeve instead since my insurance covered the revision. I could've easily went the rest of my life with the band. The main thing is don't go too tight like I did. Sent from my SM-N910V using the BariatricPal App
  2. I relate. I was unfilled to prepare for a band to sleeve revision. I tried to shake this mentality but failed lol. I put on 20+ lbs in a matter of 5 months. I felt so out of control that when it was time for my Pre-op diet, I felt relieved to end the madness. Sent from my SM-N910V using the BariatricPal App
  3. That's great!! At least you were losing with the band. I was slowly gaining but that was after an up fill for 8 months before I had the revision. I am three weeks post op and I can already tell that it's way better!!
  4. Other than the first day, my recovery has been easy. I could drink 64 oz water/day without any pain or problems, my Protein shakes, Soups go down with no problems. I'm on day 8. I feel almost like I didn't have surgery. I was wondering if my recovery is much easier than others because I had the band for many years (since 2009). If you had the band to sleeve revision, was your recovery easy or difficult? Thanks in advance!

    September 2016 Post VSG Updates

Ah, nice post. Thank you for checking up on us! hehe I'm feeling good. I was sleeved on the 2nd so I'm on day 8. I checked in at 5 am, surgery at 7 and released at 4 pm, band to sleeve revision done as outpatient. The first day was really hard, I felt dizzy and weak, incision pain...etc. Day 2, I mainly slept all day, and after that it's been great. I almost feel like I didn't have the surgery (except for the soreness of the incisions). I have no issues drinking Water, I feel like I could gulp it but I don't. My Protein shakes are going down smoothly, although at first I didn't have much of an appetite, averaging ~464 cal/day. I drank 64 oz+ water today with no issues. The first 2-3 days I took the pain and nausea meds because I'm prone to motion sickness so luckily I never felt nauseous. I lived on Gas-X strips to relieve that darn gas pain. Now I'm just taking my antacid twice a day. Again, ty for your post and checking up on us!

    Does VSG typically increase heartburn

Just had my consult,a few weeks, ago and i was, also worried, about, that,as,I have gerd and have had it for years. The surgeon said, " about 1/3 of sleeved patients will e,perience heartburn after the sleeve". He,also, said, " what he is,seeing more and more now is,that 4 to 5 years out, sleeve patients, arw getting heartburn really bad and getting a revision to rny. Best Decision I Ever Made.

DebSmiles: I had revision from VBG done 20 years ago, and other than taking additional 2 hrs to manage the scar tissue, I had RNY with no problems, and best thing I ever did. I just wish I could have had found a Dr. that could have done this many years ago. I was glad I had a Dr. and staff that had done this many times before and took good care of me. Good luck

    Best Decision I Ever Made.

@@nursey10465 You are doing great! You look like a different person in your pic! Keep it up and I'm sure you will make your goals @@MrsJroChicago Wow! I'm doing a revision from band too in January. I'm pretty sure I have some scar tissue since the band has been in 10 years. Was the pain really bad? I work from home and will only take 10 days off. Do you think I'll be ok with that?
  9. I had gastric bypass surgery thirty years ago. In that time frame little was known about the long term outcome. At least where I lived there was. Without any education I manage to lose all the weight I needed to. Life was good, I was young, about to get married. I woke one morning about 4am with back pain. At 4am I did an exercise routine with the aid of television thinking I just was having muscle spasms. Before the half hour routine completed I knew there was something gravely wrong. I was on my knees and had crawled to my parents bedroom in unimaginable pain. Now in the ER and it 6am they discussed privately with my parents that I was having stress problems that was bringing on the pain and they was writing my release papers. Quickly after this time I began to vomit blood and our family physician just happen to be walking through the ER for morning rounds. The rest of the morning is sketchy for me. I remember swallowing a tube which pump my stomach. I remember being taken to an endoscopy. I remember multiple people holding me down as I fought them in excruciating pain. I remember begging my mother to have them put me to sleep and telling her calmly I knew I was dying. Then I remember waking in intensive care. The surgeon and my family explained that I had an intussusception and the surgeon (unfamiliar with bariatric surgery) had to cut a portion of my intestines out and put it back together. It has telescoped so tightly they died and I bled internally. In fact the endoscopy showed them nothing but blood so they had to go in with exploratory surgery to find the cause. Another hour I would have died. At the time this happen I was told the Dr's were not accustom to this happening to an adult and in fact it was so rare they had never seen it to even know to look for it. From this forum it seems knowledge has come a long way. This is not something to take lightly. I had no warning signs what so ever. I had about eight hours from start to when they said I would of died for all events to unravel and take place. While I had great success with gastric bypass immediately I had major problems keeping the weight off. It took me fifteen years to seek out what happen that changed my bypass so greatly. After tests I was told the surgeon when putting my intestines back together made the empty of the stomach so large the food just falls through leaving my entire intestinal track to hold what a stomach would. While I am thankful the surgeon saved my life, I am sad that thirty years later I am disabled due to my weight and health. I am trying to seek a revision but in my case it is far more than a revision and while having two stomach surgeries each one greater than that last I will be facing the most serious one if I can get insurance to cover it. Good luck to anyone that is facing this. If you even think it could be this don't hesitate it's a very serious situation.
  10. I went for a consult today for a revision to sleeve. My doc told me today it would be better to do the band removal now and do the sleeve in like three months. I told him I can't really take off from work right now or avoid heavy lifting (my coworker is on maternity leave and we are short staffed). He said he's done it in one procedure many times but there is a higher risk of leaks 1% vs 3%. I am willing to take the chance. I don't want to go under twice anyways. Hopefully the scar tissue isn't that bad. I hope to have surgery in november

    Changing insurance question

I didn't have a revision, but I did have Cigna when I got my RNY. They were really great with me - as long as I follow their requirements to a T (and my plan actually covered bariatric surgery - they told me about half their plans do and half their plans don't, so just be sure bariatric surgery is something the plan you are purchasing covers before you choose it) Good luck!
  12. I got the lap band in 2009, and was successful in that I lost 129 lbs with it within the 18 mo. time frame and kept the majority of it off for many years. In April of this year, I felt I better go in and get a check-up to make sure everything is in order because I felt like I was hungry more often. The new doctor felt it was time for me to do a sleeve revision, told me that I have a dilated pouch. I had that once before years ago, and had to go 3 months with only half my Fluid to let my esophagus "rest". I dreaded to be unfilled again because I always gained some weight back, and I had to work twice as hard to get it off again. I couldn't talk them into not unfilling me hehe, so I said I'll go for the revision. I had my revision on Sept. 2, 2016, and am thrilled at the way I feel. No slimming, no painful pressure in the center of my chest... All those things one gets used to having the band all those years. I love it, and although I'm hungry during the liquid phase, it's not that bad at all. Lost 11 lbs in the last couple of weeks but I am prepared for the slower pace. As long as I'm losing, I'm happy with that. Good luck all, and hope you are as happy (or will be as happy) as I am with my new sleeve.

    Why did you choose bypass?

Your story sounds like what my surgeon just told me during my consult. He,said about 1/3 of sleeve patients will experience hearburn after the procedure, but he said he is seeing many people 4/5 yearsafter the sleeve having horrendous reflux and doing revisions to rny. Not sure how long your out, best of luck to u. Sent from my SM-N920P using the BariatricPal App

    Changing insurance question

Does anyone have Cigna for a revision and didn't have them before? I'm wanting to switch to them but don't want to if they like to give the run around. I'm leaving BCBSIL and heard good thing about them but it was always someone who didn't have any bariatric surgery. Any advice would be loved! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Small Stomach

Wow that would make a lot of sense. I didn't know about the boogie! Thank you! I've actually asked him about three times and he says he makes them much smaller now then what he used to due to people needing revisions and our bodies can handle smaller stomachs. I'm not feeling sick anymore but it was definitely different then most of the recoveries I've heard about. Sent from my SM-G900T using the BariatricPal App

    Does VSG typically increase heartburn

I have had gerd / acid reflux for years. I had the consult with the sergeon 8/31 and,we talked, about this. He said" yes about 1/3 of sleeve patients will experience heartburn after, and it can be bad". He also said what he is now seeing is lot of is people 4 / 5 years out from the sleeve surgery are having bad reflux and opting for the revision to bypass. He wants to do a scope on me, before any surgery, but at this point im leaning toward the bypass instead of my first choice of the sleeve. I dont want to have anymore surgery/ revision, years later. 18. Does anyone else have this problem? I still have to sleep elevated slightly, or I get reflux. Also, after I eat or drink, I get like a "bubble" in my chest right below my throat. It growls, but I can't burp. Normal? Freakish? Also, weight loss is definitely slower this time around...but I feel better than I did post band. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  19. I had a low bmi of 31 when I had the revision from band to sleeve. In just 9 months I have lost a total of 48 pounds - today I am 138 pounds and a BMI of 24. I have been trying so hard to gain weight but have NO luck. I am NEVER hungry and sometimes go all day without eating.... take today, i had an ensure drink in the morning and around 7 pm I realized i had not eaten all day so i went for a slice of pizza, I could only eat about 3/4 of it as i was full.. I spoke to my doctor about this and all he could say is you have to eat more, Really!!!! I am not sure what to do, but I really dont want to lose anymore I am open to thought.........

I'm so unsure of what I want! Help!

I do have gone through the bloodwork, psych eval., met with surgeon, and now have to be scoped, and sleep apnea test. I was set on the sleeve, but read horror stories about acid reflex, after the sleeve. I talked to the surgeon about this, as I have had gerd for years. He said yes it is common, and what he is really starting to see is 4 to 5 years out from the sleeve people are REALLY experiencing reflux bad, and end up doing a revision to the bypass. So i have made up my mind to have the bypass, because I do not want to have a revision down the line. Im 57 now BMI 35 so Im not gonna chance having reflux daily and another surgery. Good luck to you. Hope I have helped somewhat. Sent from my SM-N920P using the BariatricPal App
  23. @@bostonmama I think that ultimately the decision should be up to you BUT, with that said, I would definitely listen to what your surgeon has to say and take it into consideration. I went into this open minded but leaning towards the sleeve, but if my surgeon had recommended bypass and said that my quality of life would be better with it, I definitely would have strongly considered it. From what I understand, having the sleeve with reflux can be extremely uncomfortable, difficult, and could ultimately require a revision to bypass for relief. I understand the fear of malnutrition completely, but keep in mind that with both surgeries, you will need to take supplements for life. I am also from the Boston area Best of luck with your decision!
  24. Hello! I had band-to-sleeve revision and just to have the band out of my body was amazing. I felt great about the decision. I knew the band needed to come out but was worried I would re-gain. I did okay with the band... but still had more to lose. I weighed 211 on the revision surgery day. At the six month mark I weighed 169, which was my lowest adult weight ever. I still wanted to lose 25 pounds more... instead, the scales have been creeping back up. I weigh 189 and I am not unhappy overall but so scared I will be 250 again if I am not diligent. I do think our bodies are different the 2nd time around. Still gonna keep trying and re-evaluating. I did get lazy after 7-8 months, I had a long stall and talked myself into believing that 169 was my "normal". But, old habits and getting comfortable did not serve me well. Stay focused!
  25. Hello! I had Lapband in Dec 2009. HW 250? Got down to 199 at lowest.. Like many, I had success at first but then the complications set in. In April 2015 I had the revision to sleeve, primarily to just get the band out of me and not re-gain a bunch of weight. On revision surgery day I weighed 211 pounds. By October 2015 (6 months) I weighed 169 and felt GREAT... my lowest adult weight ever. I wanted to lose 25-30 more (I am 5'3"). Over the past year the weight has slowly crept back.... I weigh 189 today. I am going back to the basics.... Protein, Water and walking. My roommate and I had the sleeve on the same date. She had never had a weight loss surgery. We were the same height and she was about 10lbs heavier than me. She weighs 145 and looks amazing. We cook and eat the same things.... she is constantly snacking. I definitely think the second time around our bodies are holding tighter to the fat!! Best wishes. Just stay positive. At the end of the day, I am happy with my weight loss.... maintaining is hard and I live in fear of regaining to 250. I will be watching to see your success!!
