    Has Anyone Tried Alcohol?

As I am in maintenance mode, I enjoy alcohol. Just beware as you haven't consumed in a while, your tolerance may be lower. We still absorb the same, so the surgery hasn't changed anything. Keep calories in mind when consuming. Otherwise, enjoy!! :-)
  2. Good job getting a head start. I'm an OR nurse and I'm only here to help you by telling you not to shave your abdomen. In the OR, we use clippers, not razors. The reason is that clippers don't cause trauma to the skin like razors. When you shave with a razor, it causes nicks, some you can see and some you can't. The nicks can cause entry points for bacteria thereby causing infection. Also, the clipper blades used in surgery are single use blades, so everything is surgically clean. If you want to get clipped at home, make sure your clipper blade is clean and free of any hair, and douse it with alcohol before use. Using the hibiclens to shower the night before, and the morning of surgery is ideal. Good Luck!!!!

Sleeved a year ago and stopped losing...need advice!

I don't count my calories, but definitely don't eat too many. even if that was the case, I burn a ton of calories at the gym! I have always practiced no drinking 1/2 before or after a meal (or more). It's like no matter what I do....I'm stuck!! No alcohol !

Sleeved a year ago and stopped losing...need advice!

Are you counting cals? Try using my fitness pal and log EVERYTHING. There has to be a missing link somewhere. Go back to basics. No drinking while eating. Protein first. Do you drink alcohol?

    Chocolate Addiction....

Sugar alcohols have 7 calories per gram whereas fat has 9 so you do get a little less calories in the SF Russell Stovers. Mannitol and Sorbitol are the sweetners they use. They are laxatives! LOL.
  6. I can just remember how fragile I felt my like my new tummy was. It had been mutilated. Dramatic way to word it, but just think about all of that freshly traumatized and raw tissue, swollen..inflamed. How the first few weeks were so critical to healing and my surgeon terrified me by saying that serious complications and death were possible results of me making really bad choices. Now think about what it would feel like to pour alcohol on a raw, fragile wound that had only just begun to go down in swelling and attempt to heal itself. A little alcohol may help to clean and disinfect a small scratch or minor cut, but for a deep intestinal...well, wound, what might happen? Irregular healing? Additional, unforeseen complications? Additional irritation? I'm not a doctor and I really don't know, but I wouldn't ever risk it so early out. I did have some wine at 5 weeks. I didn't even finish the glass and it took me about 2 hours to drink what I did. It gave me really bad indigestion.

    Alcohol?

@@pamelardz91 I know you are probably just curious & looking for information, and not necessarily a sh!t stirrer, but this is one topic that tends to blow up quickly & BADLY!! If you are really interested in the responses, do a search for "alcohol" and read the answers under previous threads. Not trying to be a Debbie Downer, or discourage you from asking questions, but this is one topic that seems to bring out the worst in some people. Best of luck!
  8. The pre op diets vary so much, right down to whether you have one or not. The main reason, from the surgeon's perspective (as I understand it) for the pre-op diet is to get rid of some of the fat enlarging the liver. The liver must be navigated under to access the stomach. Since you have only 50 (I know, it feels like a lot and it is a lot, but in bariatric land it's a low amount) pounds to lose, your surgeon is probably thinking that your liver doesn't need to be shrunk prior to surgery. I had 5 or 6 days of a pre op diet, with 40-60 lbs to lose (depends who you ask. I say 60). I am glad I did it, because I stopped caffeine, alcohol, and many of the higher carb foods I was used to before surgery. So that was one kind of adjustment that I had already started to make, and I think it made things somewhat easier. I don't think that it was a big deal, however, and I could have made the same adjustments post op without the pre op diet, just as you will! Trust your surgeon's team (and your own questions, which they should answer). I think that even without a pre op diet, it's a good idea to get a few different kinds of Protein Meal Replacement powders and try them to see which ones you like. Your taste preferences may change after surgery, but at least you'll have a sense in advance of some that you might like. Congrats on your upcoming surgery! I love this thread. Alcohol

This is a hotly, hotly debated issue. Recommendations from surgeons and counselors are all over the place on this one and range from: (1) avoid all alcohol post-op forever (complete abstinence) to (2) avoid drinking for [3-6-12-18] months post-op (time varies greatly, depending on the surgeon) to (3) educate yourself about the dangers of transfer addictions, the potential for ulcers, how alcohol could (?) reduce nutrient absorption, and (because of faster absorption of ethanol) expose you to dangers from dis-inhibition, accidents, and even alcoholic poisoning. My own experience with alcohol was that I didn't waste empty calories on any alcohol until after 6 months post-op. At that point, my surgeon's practice recommended I raise my average daily calories to 1,200 and I felt I could "afford" an extra 100 cals/day on a glass of wine. I've 19.5 months post-op now, have lost 100 pounds and am maintaining easily at 135 pounds. I am a "social drinker" -- defined (for women) as having no more than 1.5 ounces of spirits or 5 ounces of wine per day and no more than seven drinks a week. It's working for me, at least so far. I do keep an eye on it, though, and would be willing to change what I'm doing (drink less or not at all) if alcohol were to cause me any problems. If you feel like your need / desire to drink is growing, you may want to take a step back and consider (with or without the help of a therapist) what's going on and whether you're developing a pattern you don't want to continue. You would know that better than anyone else.

    Alcohol

Some surgeons recommend no alcohol at all post-op because of the risk of addiction transference. Many WLS patients are at a high risk for developing other addictions post-op, once they can no longer maintain their addiction to food. If you find that it is hard for you to control your drinking or stop drinking, that might be some cause for concern. Physically, there's no real risk to your sleeve from alcohol. You may get drunk faster and your impaired judgement might cause you to eat more or eat the wrong things. Plus, as you pointed out, it's empty calories.

    More on Crazy Penny

@LumpySpacePrincess@LumpySpacePrincess that is an eloquent and empathetic view- thank you. I don't watch tv much and avoid "trainwreck reality" shows like the plague so haven't seen this but your response reasonated. My dad was a mean, volatile alcoholic, but I am quite sure he didn't want that life. I am quite sure"Penny" would love to have a normal full life but she doesn't even know what that looks like. It doesn't excuse or enable the behavior but empathy allows us to care about the human while hating the behavior.
  13. Would any of you compare food addiction to alcohol or drug addiction? If you know you are addicted to food and want to change, then you have various groups to help you control your addiction to make your tool work, just as an alcoholic or a druggie has their group. It is only when you have hit rock bottom, whatever your bottom might be that any any type of weight loss procedure will work, because that will be your main goal. It has been proven these tools do work, as long as you work them. Maybe the simiplist suggestion is once an addict always an addict no matter what the addiction is. You have to be honest with yourself and fight the battle until the day you die or nothing that they have now or in the future fo help with WL is going to work. Just my opinion and thoughts.
  14. Alcohol really isn't a problem for the band. I've tried beer, but the carbonation doesn't sit well for me. I've had no problem with wine or mixed drinks. You just need to be aware that alcohol, in all it's forms, is just empty calories. If you drink regularly, it will slow down your weight loss.... but we all need to have some fun, too! Cindy
  15. I have the occasional margarita and have no problems. But I have to agree, it does hit me a whole lot faster than it did before. There isnt near as much fat to absorb the alcohol anymore.

    The Boomer Chat Room

Cheryl, I'm probably not the best person to respond, because I have never liked meat or fish. It is a chore to choke down 2 oz a day, but I am trying to do it. It is even more unappealing to me now than it was before. I still eat chicken breast and it has been one of my main sources of protein all my life....so I am really tired of it. Sometimes I have to avoid the chicken for a week or two just so I can stand it again. Unfortunately for me, I like the soft proteins, like eggs, cottage cheese, plain fat free greek yogurt sweetened with Equal. I like cheese too. For meat I like things like Chilli which is often soft. My very favorite protein is the protein drinks. How far out are you? Maybe your tastes will change again if you used to like meat. I wish I could start a new paragraph but the computer won't let me, so sorry that this is a series of run on paragraphs:) I think it is a good idea to try a different NUT. Yours sounds especially obnoxious. I agree that husbands don't change and all we can do is change our responses to their weird habits:) Sounds like you have a good plan. My husband was all for the surgery, but he complains now that I don't eat enough. He also likes a glass of wine in the evening sometimes. He doesn't overindulge, but he wants me to have a glass with him. I choose not to spend my calories on wine. I also have a friend who had WLS and changed her food addiction to alcohol addiction so I am even less interested in having a glass of wine. I know some people do, but I choose not to, and he complains, but oh well....he will just have to complain.
  17. Good thread - I really want to lose this weight and am fully prepared to make the necessary food choices. I have always enjoyed a glass or two of red wine and beer - Now that I'm in the Optifast stage, I am not going to drink alcohol, but once I am banded I don't want to totally miss out on the things that I enjoy. I will simply just have to watch very carefully and ensure the calories are deducted from somewhere else, or my activity is increased to compensate.
  18. I am awful fond of Scotch-rocks/a glass of wine (preferably French) but now that I am suffering from acid reflux it seems that I am going to have to smarten up and avoid all alcohol until this biz is under control. Bummer, eh. Drinkies were my favourite empty calorie zone. I guess I am going to have to switch to icecream. :eyebrows: Green isn't going to have the same bounce or whatever.... :bounce:
  19. I have a few drinks a week too, I only ever drink wine, but I have had a beer once or twice since banding. Yes, alcohol is empty calories, but life is about more than staying on a strict diet 24/7 for the rest of your life. If you're not having more than a few and not having them too often, there's not a problem in the world with relaxing the rules every now and again.
  20. To be honest I did drink before 3 months and had no problem with it. I would say stay away from it as long as you can though because it will hinder your weight loss. I lost 80 lbs really quick and have stayed at this weight for 6 months. The stoppin of my weight loss is all alcohol. I drink a few drinks every weekend and then I have to lose those lbs during the week. I have not gained any weight but I am not losing it and I attribute it all to alcohol. so, my advice would be to stay away from alcohol until you are at goal weight. (That's also what my doctor keeps pounding in my head.) .

    Sugar free

I think it also depends on what you mean by "dessert". I enjoy sugar-free Jello and sugar-free pudding, and almost every night I have a cup of sugar-free cocoa (with a scoop of chocolate Protein powder in it, very yummy). I make my own low-carb whipped cream by whipping heavy cream with splenda and vanilla extract. I have even found out you can make low-carb ice cream (although I haven't tried it myself). If you are talking about sugar-free cakes or similar, I think you need to be careful. As @@Djmohr says, if you are far enough out you can probably handle it, but you may not want to. My wife enjoys a sugar-free blueberry loaf, but if you look at the nutrition information on it, it is still loaded with fat and carbs (and sugar alcohols). sugar free definitely doesn't mean low-calorie. If you are talking about sugar-free candies, that's a good question. Russell Stover makes a whole line of sugar-free candies (not low-calorie, just sugar free), like mint patties and chocolate-covered peanut brittle. I have often wondered if I might try one of those, but I haven't yet. I'll probably wait until I am in maintenance before I try those.
  22. Ok, well my surgeon says to wait one year. I'm clearly in the minority here but my one year will be Sat. Oct. 22nd...and I have YET to have even one sip of alcohol (or soda for that matter!) but that's just me. I'm a rule follower and I'm not a big drinker so it was no big deal for me to give up alcohol for a year. I'm a bit curious to see the effect of alcohol on my sleeve but not curious enough to try it yet. Maybe someday soon! Glad you had second thoughts about it...let that tummy heal first!
  23. My dr. also said the absortion of alcohol will be different after the sleeve. It will be much more potent.

    No weight loss? Please Help!!!

In my case I have to watch what I eat in order to loose weight even with the band. I do not eat junk food at all. I exercise daily and really work hard to loose the weight. My weakness is not chips, candy, Cookies or cake. My weakness is margaritas. If I could just not give into my cravings for margaritas I would have it made. Even though I do cheat with alcohol, I am still loosing weight pretty steadily. I recommend that you start keeping a food journal. There are several places online that you can do this or just simply buy yourself a small note pad and start keeping track of your food and Water intake. By doing this you will be able to look back and reference what you have been eating and figure out why you are not loosing. I eat between 1000-1200 calories each day. If I have a margarita or two, I try and calculate them into my daily calorie intake. But I always focus on getting my 70 grams of Protein and at least 64 oz of water each day. Without my protein I lack the energy for my workouts. I'm sure that if you check with your surgeon's office or meet with a nutritionist you can get a specific diet plan to follow that will aid in your weight loss effort. Good luck to you!
  25. I agree with others here. I think it's way to early. I only recently, 4+ months out, had a sip of red wine for a toast. I don't know if it was psychological but it felt like it burned a little. I stay away from alcohol for now and will probably wait till 6 months or so. My surgeon recommended three to four months that's why I had that "sip."
