  1. Hi I am new just joined up. My name is Roxxie and well my Lap Band is almost 4 years old now and due to some problems I am now seeking a revision from the band to Gastric Bypass. I will be turning 60 in a few months and it is harder for people my age to lose weight or to keep it off. I lost over 100 pounds and re gained 16 back in a year, not good but who knows why for I sure don't

    NYU Help

Hi, Generally, the answer depends on your insurance. I have Cigna. I attended an information session and found out that my insurance requires a 6 month medically supervised diet. So I started that process first. Then I made an appointment for the psych consult. Around the same time I made an appointment with my primary care doctor. She wrote a letter for me on the spot. It was very simple, just identifed multiple attempts at weight loss. I was seeing a different doctor for the supervised diet. I got copies of my records before I went to NYU for the appt with the nutritionist and consult with Dr. Kurian. I saw both on the same day--along with the nurse for an exam. After meeting with Dr. Kurian I met with Nilsa, the surgical coordinator. She suggested getting additional details about the visits for the medically supervised diet, which I did. When I met with Nilsa we set a tentative date for surgery and she took care of getting insurance approval. Here's where it gets ugly. The office is very busy. Nilsa is very very busy. My paperwork was not submitted until three business days before my surgery. I was going nuts. Everytime I asked Nilsa when she was going to submit the paperwork, I got the run around. Finally, I called the office manager (Marianne) and Tammy (who is very helpful). If you read other posts about NYU you will see that many of us are frustrated by the administrative staff. That said, I wouldn't go anywhere else. Dr. Kurian is GREAT. At the end of the day, that was the single most important factor in my decision. Good luck and let us know how you are doing.

    Hair loss

I wonder if any one is experiencing thin hair?. I was told before surgery that hair lost is one of the side effects. My hair is thinning and this is not funny. Has any one tried anything that has helped? I am great full with my weight lost at this point, hopefully still to loose more a little stalling but that's okay. Initial weight 200 lb, surgery date 10/10/16 current weight 157 so far. Sent from my SM-G920T using the BariatricPal App

Wow...... You look amazing!!!! Hope I loose so much weight as well, I bet you can do tons of things now that you could probably not do before. WOW!!!!!

    five days late.

Yep. The fast weight loss we experience early out wreaks havoc with our hormones and it's just as likely to have an extra period as to have none. Just in case, there's no chance you could actually be pregnant is there? Enhanced fertility is another side effect of those hormones for some people.

    Weightloss Stalls?

well everybody is different. I hit a stall at about 8 Weeks post op and lasted about 3 Weeks. then it picked up slowly, and now I'm 14 Weeks out. this week I lost 7 lbs. last week I lost 4 lbs. hopefully it continues. just remember that no two people loose exactly the same. it depends on your starting weight, and whether or not you are following the nutrition plan. Waiting game

First of all, 10/20 is my birthday! I will be having a great time having pre-op testing done that morning, my sleeve surgery is on Halloween! Secondly, are you going through insurance? Most have hoops to jump through, various appointments to make and keep, meetings to attend, etc. Mine was pretty easy but I still had to do a psych eval and various appointments and tests. If you are interested there are many people on YouTube documenting their weight loss surgery. You can search WLS, RNY, VSG or DS. People do a video diary of their journey, very informative and fun to watch. A LOT of them are from California, many northern Cali.
  8. Yes my doctor explained to me that it is really hard on our bodies to lose lots of weight (anything more than 2lbs a week) so it will often take a break and then after that break you might pick up right where you left off or you might have a big loss right away. My doc suggested only weighing myself on the 1st and the 15th of every month. That might be easier said than done though! I might have to get my hubby to hid the scale from me!! lol
  9. I can't believe it! I have lost 69 lbs. My goal was 90 by now, but I think I've done pretty darn well and that I'll get at least to 85. It hasn't been an easy year. Some of you know what's been going on. My husband's been ill for more than a year, and he got so sick in August that my band literally froze up, and I've had problems ever since. I've had 3 unfills! I am proud of myself for being a "responsible bandster" and getting unfilled when I was way too tight instead of trying to ride it out. I am grateful for lining up good aftercare BEFORE being banded Mexico. I am happy I chose Dr. Ortiz & that he's been in constant touch w/my doctors here to resolve my stupid nutcracker problem. I'm happy that I've been a positive example for my daughter. I think I'm doing better with medication and looser fill. A looser fill makes me more aware of what I eat. And believe it or not, I'm happy that I've lost so much weight that I have to have my abdominal surgery (related to my mastectomy) revised to remove the majorly buldging stitches and that it will result in a tummy tuck. That's why I might have to stop at 85 lbs.; if I lose too much I will bulge again. What a problem to have! On that subject, I am happy that my plastic surgeon, who will perform that surgery, is so amazed by my weight loss. I've taught him (and my internist) that bypass is not the only successful WLS. Surprisingly enough, when I saw him the other day, I brought along a detailed image from of a banded stomach & the port location so he doesn't damage it when he "peels back" my previous surgery. The area is from just above the pubic area to just below my belly-button. He said, "Karen, I know where the port is, I've helped some other surgeons re-position them". That really blew me away and gave me peace of mind. I'm grateful for the past year and in light of people's recent problems pray that I will be able to keep my band. Besides marrying my husband and having my two wonderful children, it's the best thing I've ever done. I'm happy that I've made friends on this board, and I'm very grateful for your support and encouragement. Thank you.

  11. I eat a lot of chicken and fish too. I also like lean pork loin. It comes in different flavored marinades. I like the honey mustard and terriaky. You don't say if your working out. If your not, I would start. It really works wonders for weight loss. Start slow and gradually increase your duration and/or intensity. I would also journal what you eat, then you can see what your eating. I did it on paper but lots of people like to use apps online. One is fitday.com. Hope this helps.

  14. Aloha all, My gastric bypass surgery is scheduled for April 21, 2014. I've done such a good job logging my food and making healthy eating choices since December when I joined my hospitals program, but since actually scheduling my surgery a week ago though I've found it so hard to avoid my old pitfalls. Perhaps now I have, "this is my last chance" mentality- but it is ruining all the work I've done so far. I have had nightmares about gaining weight and then denying me the day if my surgery because of it. This has been a logistic nightmare to plan because I'm a teacher and have to take so much time off work. I would love some encouraging words, stories or tips to get me through my last 29 days before surgery. Thanks all!
  15. First off White or Red? Anyway. I went on a cruise preband and I actually lost weight. My mother and I would either go on an excursion and do a lot of walking or if we were on ship get up early and go swimming before breakfast. Also we were on an enormous ship and got a lot of walking in just getting to the restaurants. At the buffets you choose how much food you want. At breakfast you can even order egg whites instead of regular eggs. At the ship's restaurants they have several courses but the serving sizes are not that large. You can pick and choose how many courses you want. FYI when we ordered ice cream for dessert (very decident home made stuff) each "scoop" was ping pong ball size. So you can get a taste without over doing it.

  17. Hi Carmen, Welcome!! We can all relate to those long stretches of time with no weight loss, particularly before a fill. Good luck with your next one and let us know how it went!
  18. I Keep telling myself, okay, today I'm going to be back on track! Then, I do good, then fall off the wagon. I weighed this morning and I am up to 185 lbs! I weighed at one time 167! I am so disgusted with myself. I feel like the biggest PIG! I keep waiting on that "restriction" and it isn't happening. I get some, then lose it, or I get too tight. I'm so mad at myself that I screwed up, I used to have pretty good restriction at 3.8, but then tried to get tighter, and well, now I'm still trying to get that restriciton back! Sucks. I am using it as an excuse to eat what I want, when I want etc. Well, it was a major wake up call. I feel bad to keep typing in my journal how - I'm going to start and how good I'm going to do, then I don't. I keep breaking promises to myself. I have to be true to myself so I've got to take control - for good. It seems I do good for a week, then blow it for 2 weeks. Its a vicious cycle. The weight is creaping back on and I must stop it now! I must! I must! I was in tears this morning, but I am not going to "feel sorry" for myself, or beat myself up anymore. I can't change the past, but I can change the future. No more sweets, no more sugar! No more! Its time to pull my head out of the sand and quit doing the self destruction like I've done with every diet in the past. I am hoping to get my restriction back at my next fill - 4/7/08, but until then, I need to focus, really focus. I need to THINK before I eat, I need to plan my meals! I must exercise! I don't want to be a Band Failure, I want to be a success! Okay - my life will change. I will report my weight everyday on here. Good or bad, I'm also going to report my menu - good or bad! Wt 184.7 Exercise - Menu Protein shake - chocolate Whey protein, with added coffee Coffee with cream - no sugar Lunch - Roasted chicken, few bites of green beans and some corn Snack - 1/2 container of strawberry no sugar yogurt with a little grape nuts added in it. Dinner - Roast, few carrots

    My Tuesday Downunder....

Wow Majj, I am envious of your bird buddies! Wish we got some colorful parrots at our feeders. We feed a lot of birds too here in the Ozark Mtns of Arkansas. We have ruby throated hummingbirds, rose breasted grosbeaks, baltimore orioles, mourning doves, indigo buntings, and cardinals, just to name a few. I would really appreciate it if you would drop by to pressure wash our front porch!:w00t: It really needs it as we haven't cleaned it all winter and "porch sitting" weather is fast approaching! Congrats on the weight loss too!!!
  20. I am just starting the process for the sleeve surgery. It has been recommended to me by my Dr. I am around 400 lbs +/-. I have no idea because I don't have a scales that goes that high. So far I am healthy other than I can not walk very much without getting winded or my back hurting. So when I go grocery shopping or whatever I have to lean on a cart to keep my back from hurting. Obviously, I don't shop much especially if it entails a lot of walking. I do not exercise either so I am pretty weak. I have my first seminar and Dr. appt on Jan. 13th. I have the support from everyone in my family with the exception of my husband. So far he is refusing to go to the seminar with me or to even be receptive to the idea of me having the surgery. In 40 years of being very happily married I have never gone against his wishes. I wonder if anyone else has met with this problem and how you handled it? I am not sure I am strong enough to go against him and get the surgery without his support. I had a hysterectomy about 4 1/2 years ago and they almost lost me on the table and I know that is what he is thinking now so I understand his situation. But if I don't do something fast about my weight I could die from a heart attack too. Anyway, if anyone has had this problem please let me know how you handled it.

    Just Getting Started

Sounds like your husband is afraid of losing you. Maybe you could have your doctor call and talk to him about the dangers af NOT losing weight. Is your husband overweight as well? Maybe he is afraid you will try to get him to lose when he isn't ready to. Talk to your doctor about the problem and see if he can help. Good luck!

    LOOSE SKIN

The fact is skin elasticity is determined by genetics and your age. Some skin will snap back quickly, some slowly, and some not at all. Back2fit is correct that weight training helps reduce the appearance of loose skin- filling the empty skin with muscle mass helps. It depends on how far along you are, are you done losing, etc., before you'll know how your skin handles the loss. Sent from my SM-G900V using BariatricPal mobile app

    8 weeks post foods

Not sure on the corn. I have had it in vegetable soup and I am 8 weeks out too. How are you doing weight wise? I have lost 23 in 8 weeks which I thought was kind of slow.
  24. As I lose weight and my old clothes begin to look sloppy, I buy a few new outfits, to reward myself and confirm the realness of my changing body. I know I won't be wearing them long, but it's worth it to me to let myself feel good about how I look. And there's no shortage of overweight women looking for fabulous plus size clothing on eBay and etsy, so I can always recoup some of my cash, but allowing myself the pleasure of buying smaller clothes that fit is one of many ways to add beauty to my weight loss journey. I'm worth it, and so are you.
