    Mad at myself

I am sorry for your loss and that you gained weight. As others have suggested your tool is still there you just have to get back In your groove with your nutrition and exercise. I agree that where ever you choose to begin with the gym is a great start by just making it a habit getting there (I could take my own advise here). I think your idea to talk to someone may be your best. Keep posting your progress here as I’m sure you will have several of us here in your corner along the way.

    Mad at myself

Sending hugs, and I'm very sorry to hear of the loss of your mother. Thank you for sharing your experience with weight gain after surgery. I think it is a fear that many of us have & it is unfortunate how easily the weight can come back. I hope getting the help you believe you need gets you back to where you want to be. I wish you well, and know you can do it. 😊🍀

    food addict I'm not sure

I think we have seen a number of posts from you in the past couple weeks that indicate you are really struggling with some mental/emotional issues that need to be addressed if you are going to be successful in your weight loss journey. The struggle is not only having the surgery and the weight loss begins but the mental aspect of it. You have to be mentally committed to getting it done and be able to resist temptation. In addition to the eating portion in a physical sense, if you are not mentally OK with your life and your situation, you are not going to be successful. I urge you to get some counselling ASAP if you are going to go on this weight loss journey.

    meal kits for bariatrics?

I wondered that myself and thought about Jenny craig, nutrisystem, or those Hello Fresh type of home delivery meal kits. But then I thought, wouldn't frozen "Weight Watchers" or "Atkins" dinners work?

    Mad at myself

First, I'm sorry for your loss. Second, it happens. It happened to me. I gained close to 30 pounds back during COVID, but the good news is that the WLS still works and I was able to successfully lost that 30 pounds back just recently. It's possible. You can do it. Take care of yourself and get back to the basics and you'll be successful.
  6. This is true, but do consider the body will deploy a lot of strategies to minimize calorie expenditure if you get under the weight set point the body wants to be at. We know from the Harvard Health Biggest Loser study that the metabolism can lower expenditure by more than 800 calories a day - and even when gaining the lost weight back, the metabolism stays in this state (so this is why you gain more and more as crash diets stop and you regain).
  7. Surely if you are in a calorie deficit then you will continue to lose weight until you reach maintenance.

Did you lose your tummy fat last?

I’m pear shaped and have lost weight/inches off my stomach, but the extra skin still hands off the front like an apron. I’ve a ways to go yet and try to look at a number of non-scale victories like climbing stairs easier, new smaller flattering clothes, or balancing on one leg longer than 10 seconds. I still measure mostly so I find the right sizes online or in thrift stores. I realized that the bat wings on my arms are not going to give me an accurate measure because there’s so much leftover skin. I try to focus on my muscle definition instead. The skin is my Clark Kent outfit, but underneath I’m Super Woman!

Did you lose your tummy fat last?

I do measure myself. Like I mentioned in my first post, I have lost inches, but not as significant as other areas I would say. Let's see. I don't like measuring myself too often since inches lose quite closely with weight. But I do keep a track of it.

    Binge eating

@thinbluelineI can relate a lot to your struggle. Sure I wasn't 300 pounds but given my height I was pretty out there with a BMI of >45. Like MGB mentioned, it does get triggered by restrictive dieting and mine surely did right after I was done a 2 months of Dr. Bernstein's diet program. Only 2 months and it wrecked good 15 years of my life. I developed eating disorder without even realizing what it was. Intially it wasn't as bad as in I put on the lost weight and gained some more. But as I started my grad school and towards the end of it, ED got severely bad. Depression, anxiety made it a lot worse. I never thought of getting the treatment since I was always on the yo-yo dieting trip. Binge Binge Binge, increased weight, dieting (and wreaking even more of my metabolism) and the loop continued over years. This did right till my pre-Op diet phase. Midnight binging while everyone's sleep behind the closed door was my jam. It's of course horrible a cycle. But food brings comfort and kicks your happy hormones. Hence the contineud cycle. It is an ADDICTION. And you should get the help. If you haven't gotten the help or the help given isn't enough, I'll say surgery does help. That's my personal experience. Everyone is different, because everyone functions differently along with their bodies. So it isn't hopeless to think surgery won't work. Even with full on BED, it has worked for me. But for some, they require therapy. May be down the line year or two post-Op I may need it too. All I am saying is that surgery helps controlling your urges, hormones and desire of binging. It cuts down on the constant 'I wanna eat this eat that, what more can I have tomorrow, what should I eat in the night, what restaurants are open, google browsing' etc etc etc. The cycle does break. So stay optimistic and go with a positive mindset that surgery will help control your BED. And if you wanna make sure you're in control of BED before surgery, try therapy like others suggested. You have to do what will help you on a success trip. Hoping you get to break away from this 'food horror' cycle. ❤️

Did you lose your tummy fat last?

Yeah, I think it's an individual thing and dependent on how you put weight on. I put weight on from my head to my toes, though at my heaviest my body began storing more around my stomach. I'm losing it in exactly the same pattern. It's coming off evenly all over, however because I ate myself into a big gut, my stomach is still the biggest part of my body. It will come off, but it will likely take longer than I'd Iike. However, at the end of the day I did this to myself, and you don't get anything for free. This is the consequence I have to accept. But the upside is I'm still much happier with myself as I am currently, than what I was pre-surgery. At least when I lie down, my stomach flattens out and I can feel hips and ribs I haven't felt in decades!

    Negative comments from family members

I've told most my family and friends and most have been supportive, with occasional negative comments such as " my sister is the only one that hasn't gained it back." I'm looking at it as a lack of experience and knowledge on their part and try to educated them. Every situation is of course, different. If someone weighs 300 lbs, like my friend, she lost 150 lbs, but then over next 15 years she gained 50 back. However, she is still down 100 lbs. I consider that a success, it kept her health in a good place. I try to pass that on and look at it from a different point of view. She wasn't trying to look in a bikini, its about health and she succeeded in that.

    food addict I'm not sure

I came to the conclusion that I am a food addict after reading several books These books also tell one how to deal with the addiction. Boiled down to the basics: one must avoid trigger foods just as an alcoholic must abstain from alcohol. The usual trigger foods are are sugar, flour. white potatoes, rice, and processed food. "Processed food" is anything in a bag or box in the center aisles of the supermarket. Shop the exterior aisles where one finds fresh produce, meats, poultry, dairy, and frozen vegetables. There is a withdrawal period that is uncomfortable, but after a couple of weeks the cravings for the trigger foods diminish. Unless one of the trigger foods is sitting right In front of me, I no longer have difficulty avoiding them. I have lost 93 lbs by cutting out these things, 70 lbs prior to RNy revision surgery and another 23 lbs to date post surgery, I recommend these books Food Junkies: Recovery from Food Addiction by Vera Tarman Weight Loss Surgery Does Not Treat Food Addiction by Connie Stapleton Why Diets Fail (Because you're Addicted to Sugar) by Nicole Avena & John Talbott

    Introduction post

from what I've heard about a lot of bariatric Facebook groups (other than those sponsored by weight loss surgery clinics, of course), it's probably just as well! I think forums like these are better, to be honest.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

I had my revision to bypass 3 weeks ago. I've been cleared to eat soft foods but can eat only very small amounts at a time and things like ground beef and tuna are not agreeing with me at all. I did discover last night that about 2 oz of deli meat agrees with me as long as I don't try to eat or drink anything else for about an hour after. My favorite thing so far has been refried beans with taco sauce and a bit of melted shredded cheese. I'm getting most of my protein from drinking Fairlife skim milk. I'm down almost 14 pounds which blows my mind because it took me almost 2 months to lose that when I had my sleeve 7 years ago. I didn't do this for weight loss but it's been a welcomed bonus. No more heart burn or reflux either. Sent from my Z5157V using BariatricPal mobile app

Did you lose your tummy fat last?

Well this is a bummer to hear about. My belly is where I started carrying most of my weight when I turned 50. I would pay money to lose my belly weight first! It makes me look pregnant. Ugh, this is not encouraging news. I wonder if we can do AB crunches and other abdominal workouts after surgery. This is probably a good question for my exercise physiologist who I will see two weeks after my surgery.

    July 2021 Surgery People!

Congratulations on losing 20 pounds. 16 to go is so close! From what I read and what my doctor's office said, the first 6 months of weight loss is the biggest & then it starts slowing down, especially as you get closer to goal/healthier weight. People can lose beyond that first year, but it seems to be harder. I'm sure gaining it back is easy to do if old habits return. I have been adding genepro (unflavored protein powder) to my yogurt or to iced coffee to help reach my daily protein goals. I understand it can be hard to get it all in. I think your idea of adding it to your soup & yogurt is a great way to get protein in if you are having difficulty. Maybe start with 1/2 serving added to a beverage or liquid/mushy food (soup & yogurt, as you said)? (I mix it with a little room temp water before adding it to hot or cold beverages & then slowly incorporate it) The hairloss gets better. Mine is coming back in, so I have all these shorter hairs mixed in with my long ones. Wishing you luck in losing the 16 pounds & maintaining your loss.

    July 2021 Surgery People!

Congratulations on reaching your goal and surpassing it! You should be proud of yourself. I am so happy for you. Your friends & family may just need time to get used to seeing you at this weight, don't let them get you down. You think feel good & look good, how you feel about yourself is more important! I bet you look amazing! Wishing you success in maintaining your weight loss.
  21. So I believe tummy fat usually does take time to lose. I have noticed losing weight overall from most areas of the body and of course tummy as well. But it seems more is coming from areas than tummy. Abdominal fat is a resistive for sure. What can be done to speed it up? Or will it the last one on the weight lost track?
  22. How are y’all doing that have had the revision surgery from sleeve to RNY? I just learned I’ll be having the same soon due to GERD, esophagitis and hiatal hernia. my sleeve was in 2012 and I lost and kept off 85 pounds. Are y’all losing additional weight? I really just want pain relief but will gladly accept additional weight loss!

im so glad to meet you. I have fear of calories from day one. i am 20 weeks post op and my fear keeps me under 600 cals this day. i told my dietician i cant make my numbers cause i am terrified of weight regain. Today i had one scrambled egg and two bites of mashed red beans and im done for the day. if im hungry i ignore it or drink water till it goes away. im crazy obsessing over failure. Plus i had family members tell me before surgery i would fail. And im gonna show them, not me, this is where my problem comes from. Sent from my SM-G973U using BariatricPal mobile app
