Vitamin D deficiency & weight lost
Jill10191130 replied to Aries32's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That's very interesting. I also had a Vitamin D deficiency according to my surgeon. He ran a bunch of lab work before surgery. I didn't know it was linked to slow weight loss though. He just told me that a daily multivitamin should take care of it. -
How Many Appointments
JerseyGirl68 replied to tmesley's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
All insurance requirements are different. I have BCBS NJ and they required a 2 year weight history from PCP. A letter from me detailing my efforts over the last year. A psych eval. A Nutritionist meeting. My surgeon had required bloodwork and an Endoscopy. I began with a consult with the surgeon to get info on August 1, I received my insurance approval 9/25. Next Tuesday I go to meet with my surgeon again and set a date for surgery. I took a few weeks to decide to move forward so I could have gotten the approval quicker, I guess. The office coordinator at your chosen practice should be able to tell you exactly what is required for insurance approval. Good luck! -
Ladies I need your advice!

I am not sure which one to go to but...be careful!! After you loose weight you may just be a Fertile Myrtle!! That is awesome meeting someone!! Good for you! -
A big part of the pre-op diet is to reduce the excess fat in your liver, and shrink it to make the surgery safer. Avacados have quite a high fat content (14% by weight), which is why they're so yummy.

shorty, stay strong and be encouraged. Over 2 years ago my pcp did similar to yours. She sabotaged my attempt at surgery during my weight loss trial for insurance. 3 months in, I had lost 22lbs (most of it water weight, from cutting out soda etc...) and she decided if I stuck to the diet I could lose the weight, no surgery needed. She told me she wouldn't recommend the surgery, and blew my hopes out of the water. I got depressed, gain back all the weight I'd lost plus some more, and figured I was screwed. Then I changed pcp's, and my surgery is now in June. Don't waste time on depression or feeling sorry or upset. Simply switch pcp's. Get all your documentation sent over to your new pcp, and have them write the letter. The letter from the new pcp and included documentation will prove you've done the weight loss trial period, and completed all you need to do. The insurance should still accept it, mine did. Good luck! -Brian

5 yr weight history..ugh
snzgetsfit replied to tennleslie1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I compiled a list of my weights over the years myself...and typed it up. I had joined and rejoined WW so many times and had all those cards. That was sufficient. I knew my weights almost every year since I was 16. Not a problem -
Hello all! I have been coming to this site for almost 4 months now and have gained alot of insight throughout my insurance process. I was approved by Aetna 2 weeks ago, and just met with my surgeon this past Thursday. He says I have to lose 20 pounds in the next 3 weeks. Since I gained weight during the insurance phase he wants to have me do pre-op for a total of 4 weeks. My surgery date is April 17th- so he'll meet with me the week prior (April 9th) to check on my progress and make sure I stuck to the pre-op plan, or else he says he'll move the surgery date up. I understand this is for my safety but ugh... It's soo tough! I have a severe headache and find that when I'm at work I don't think about food as much since I'm super busy, but at home now on the weekends is so tough. I'm told to have a protien shake for Breakfast, eat a piece of lean meat for lunch, and a protien shake for dinner. Is it ok if I eat other high protien foods? Like eggs? or cheese? Or should I just tough it out and do nothing but the shakes? Help.

Mpope There are many factors that go into the whole saggy skin - Your age - how long you have been over weight - DNA (this is the biggest factor) Think of a garbage bag put in a ten pound weight - leave it there for a short time then take it out - the bag goes back into shape Now take 80 lbs and leave the weights in the garbage back for a few years - take it out the bag will not go back into shape. Exercise works your muscles not your skin - building more muscle fills the space where the fat was and your skin - but it's not going to firm your skin, What's more important - saggy skin - or your health?? Saggy skin is not going to kill you but that fat will - put it into perspective.. I have grandma boobs (I am a Grandma :scared2:) but with proper bra they look good - I have a little flap on my tummy nothing spanxs doesn't take care of. My arms - will that's another story - but I just don't go sleeveless. Heck we don't live in Eden where we would be walking around naked - (thanks Eve :blushing:) We walk around clothed - so most of the flabby skin is covered up.. I feel 10 yrs younger - Look 100% better - and God willing have extended my life span - and this was the whole purpose of my getting the band. The better looks is secondary to me. There are always plastic surgeons - but insurance will not cover them unless it's medically necessary - (rashes under your apron if you have one) So the real question should be - What's Important to you... Your health or a little flabby skin??

cost of lap band surgery
Jodi_620 replied to erdlori's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is a huge variance. Without insurance, within the US self-pay can be anywhere from $15,000.00 to $20,000.00 or more, depending on your location. Some doctors include aftercare and others charge for fills and visits. With insurance the variance is even bigger. It really depends on what kind of coverage you have and can range from no coverage for weight loss surgery to 50%, 80%, 100%. My surgeon charges $17,500.00 for self-pay patients. Fills are not included. With insurance he charged the insurance company a lot more, around $29,000.00 (excluding anesthesia), they sqabbled back and forth for a couple of months and in the end my total out-of-pocket was around $5,000.00. Insurance has covered aftercare and fills 100% If you have insurance, the first step is to see if they cover weight loss surgery and if so how much and what the requirements are. Then find some seminars in your area and go from there. -
Surgery Next Week or September?!
Sunnybaby replied to Myonlybattle's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was given a few different dates and chose to go with the soonest date possible. It's better to do it now than to go on vacation, gain weight, then not qualify for the surgery. Even if you have it done I am fairly certain that you could go just about anywhere and get the foods you need. You should make sure that the hotel rooms will have a fridge in them so you can go to the grocery store and have things onhand for you just in case. The sooner you have the surgery the sooner you start your new life. -
Surgery Next Week or September?!
DallasSleeve replied to Myonlybattle's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As someone who had my sleeve done last summer, June 10, I would actually tell you to wait. While I usually believe you should just do it because you will be sad you waited, traveling was a HUGE PAIN last summer for me! I traveled at 4 weeks out and 8 weeks out and was miserable both times (nauseous and dehydrated, plus it was hard to find things to eat). It's not like you are waiting because you want to be able to eat more, I just think those first few weeks are tough enough without throwing in traveling. I have lost about 120 pounds since last June- the weight will come off and then you can get to traveling and living life to the fullest next summer! I leave for Cancun in a week and am so excited! -
It took 3.5 years....but surgery in 3 weeks!
lynmar posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I was on this forum quite a while ago asking for help with insurance issues, etc. For 3 years, my insurance denied me, even though I appealed with a ton of paperwork from several doctors and made numerous phone calls, wrote letters and on and on. My place of employment finally switched to a different insurance company in 2017 and I had my first visit with the surgeon the beginning of February. I had already been to other doctors, been to nutritionists, taken weight loss meds, and done so many programs, so I had already met many of the pre-requisites. After jumping through some more hoops, having some tests done, seeing another nutritionist, I was finally approved for surgery and it is now set for July 25th! I am so very happy to start my journey, my only regret is that it took so long to get here. But, I'm here now and wanted to share my good news! I'm a little nervous about it as I've not had many surgeries in my life, but I know Ill get through this and my life is going to change for the better in so many ways! -
umbilical hernia complications?
mgmagnolia replied to kmb472's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have an umbilical hernia as well. I asked my surgeon about it. He told me that it won't be an issue for him because he will not be using my belly button for the laproscopic surgery. He's making his incisions above my waist. He told me that I needed to wait to have it repaired until I'd lost weight. He said if I had it done during the lapband surgery that the patch would not hold because of the weight loss. I don't know how your surgeon will do your surgery so don't take my word for it. You will need to talk to him about it. Make sure he knows about it. The more he knows about your health before he does the surgery the better prepared he will be. -
I'm on the 15th... Thinking-I'm on day 4 of my liquid diet and just realized I was supposed to be drinking Low Sugar stuff too.. Not that i was adding sugars, just drinking juice with my Protein drinks... .OOPPSS I've already messed up... Maybe not too bad... I'll get it right starting tomorrow. I hope that it doesn't matter that much. I have been eating 750-100 cal, low fat, not too high carb. DOING- working my hiney off getting everything at work and with the kids lined up for next week when I'm out of town. Also packing my bags, getting all my stuff that I need together for when I get back home, Reading, reading, reading... about what to eat when I get home, what to do when I get home, etc... And I'm exhausted from all the running around. feeling- nervous- Nervous that I wont lose weight after going thru all of this more than anything. I don't lose weight well at all. I can follow a healthy diet and exercise and only lose minimal weight. I just don't want this to be another failure. I know everyone has told me that I WILL lose, but I still worry about it. A little sad that my relationship with my "friend food" is changing.. forever. BUT Excited- about what the future brings-- I am focusing on the WHY I am doing this... For my kids, for my health. AND, excited that I am going to be able to cross my legs again, that my knees will feel better, that I will be able to buy clothes in a regular store, that I will feel better, that I will be healthier... HOW BOUT YOU???

Hi kel...I am 2 months post-op having the sleeve done in Hamilton. My wait time from referral going in to surgery was just under a year. From what I have learned talking with people in the clinic, I am a rare case of getting through the process quickly. The word now is people who had their orientation in April will expect to get their first appointment by Dec 2014. Good news is once you have your first appointment with the nurse and dietitian things move quick. I will give you a bit of advice, once you get your orientation letter get all the test your Dr needs to book done quick and your blood work. If you can take all the cancellation appointments that come available and if it looks like surgery might be around a holiday take it. Most people will pass over those because they don't want to be on the restricted diet over a holiday. I took mine over Easter because no a lot of others didn't want to because of short notice. Trust me the time will got by quicker then you think but keep your head up and your eye on the future. Oh yeah you will get to voice your opinion as to which surgery you want but the surgeon is the one who makes the decision on which one is the best for you. I was suppose to have the by-pass but once Dr got in he decided he couldn't safely do the by-pass. I am happy with the sleeve, but weight loss is slower then the by-pass. hope this helps

eating like crazy. HELP!!!
dreamer69 replied to JENNIFER7375's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not till I was put on the 2 week liquid diet did I realize what HUNGER really is! LOL.... And as many have said here, you have to make the band work for you, its a tool, its not gonna just help you lose weight on its own. Think of it like this, the lap band is like 10% of helping you lose weight, the other 90% is where you come in, Mentally. Make it work for you. Notice what you're eating, what time, and why you're eating and ask yourself, I'm I really hungry or just want to eat to satisfy myself? Trust me, I know its NOT easy. We all been here, I know I'm still learning and growing but just take it one step at a time. Best, Chris -
Hey all, I have a 3 month wait between band removal and being sleeved. I'm concerned about weight regain and I'm looking for ways to try and maintain my weight (maybe even loose a little if I'm lucky) Has anyone tried the weight watchers pro point system? Did it work? Did you have to adjust the amount of points you were allocated?

Pregnancy before/after sleeve anyone?
TNchick posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am considering getting the sleeve and have made my intial consultation appointment for 06/09. I just got married and was wanting to have children (or at least start trying) within the next year but I didnt want to be at this weight during pregnancy. I was told by my friend, who also had sleeve, that you had to wait at least one year after surgery to get pregnant. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice of whether I should try to have children before or after the surgery? Any personal experiences? Thanks -
