Second thoughts[emoji22]
SharBear617 replied to jtellechea001's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When I had decided on surgery, I was fairly set on the sleeve. But as I thought more about why I was actually going through this (for the best "tool" to carry me through a lifetime of better health), and after having met one-on-one with the dietician before surgery, I ultimately decided for me RNY bypass was the best way to go. Plus for many, MANY years I had dealt with GERD, and supposedly the bypass is a better option in the hopes of helping with that (which I feel it definately has helped). I'm now 10 weeks after having my bypass, and while it is definately an adjustment, I'm not at all regretting my decision. Good luck, it really has to be a personal decision, but focus on what you really want to get from it and you'll come to what works best for you! Sent from my SM-G928V using the BariatricPal App -
I would google the 5 day pouch test and leverage it to get back to basics. It will help reset your system. Then I would get back on the rules. If you do that and remain there the weight will come off. 1. A minimum of 70 grams of Protein per day 2. No Pasta, rice, bread, potatoes or processed foods, also no sugar. Get your carbs from healthy vegetables and fruits 3. Do not drink your calories. The only calories you should get from liquid is a Protein shake. I use Premier Protein ready made shakes and I still have 1 per day. They have 30 grams of protein, 1 gram of sugar and only 160 calories. 4. Nothing to drink 30 minutes before or 30 minutes after eating 5. Take no more than 30 minutes to eat and at least 20 minutes. Chew your food slowly and completely. 6. Log everything you eat into a program like myfitnesspal. This helps you see where you are at and holds you accountable. It helps me make better choices because I take a moment to log after I eat something. So if I had something I shouldn't have, I can make up for it with a better choice later in the day. 7. Get yourself moving a little more each day. This is what I do and how I got to goal. I have also gone off track for a short couple of weeks, gained a few pounds and following this helped me lose those few pounds and more. Good luck to you!

Submitted and playing the waiting game!
dreamgirl45 replied to JCsMamaBear's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
JCsMamaBear, you just expressed what I've been experiencing. I've finished all evaluations and playing the waiting game. It took 3 weeks to get an approval letter from my insurance company. When I called my doctor's office, they said it was just a letter approving that I was a candidate for WLS. They said now I have to wait for a letter actually approving of the procedure. It's sort of frustrating because it's causing me to rearrange summer plans, kids schedule, etc., but my husband said that this isn't a process that we want to rush so let's just make sure that everything is done right. In the meantime, I see shows like the new season of Extreme Weight Loss and think-- okay, can I do that? Do I really need surgery? Then I'm reminded that that is TV and I don't have Chris Howell working with me. Good luck to you! -
Sleepless Nights
mesaucedo replied to phillygirl8133's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The incision where my tummy came out was by far the worst. It took about four weeks to be comfy with it. But mine was right above my bellybutton and I am a stomach sleeper. How far out are you? I can't sleep either but that is because there is a hugeeee brown recluse hanging out above my bed. -
Week Two down...Thick Liquids are a welcome change!
time-4-change posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Good Morning Friends! Today is the beginning of week three and I was happy to have my first cup of yogurt today. I can honestly say that I don't mind the not chewing as much as I mind all the sickly sweet foods. I know you all said that your taste buds changed, but the Carbmaster Yogurt this morning almost gagged me and it was always my yogurt of choice! I weighed this morning in honor of my sleeve-a-versary and was down 2 more pounds...that makes 11 since surgery...stupid me was almost sad because it wasn't more and then I realized that I would have given anything for a 2 lb loss a few months ago! I guess it is all relative! I am going to measure today...assuming this little seamstress can find a tape measure! I think measurements will come in handy when I hit the stalls! Hope you all have a wonderful day! Cheers~ Barb -
Week Two down...Thick Liquids are a welcome change!
time-4-change replied to time-4-change's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You go girl! I went out to dinner at our favorite Mexican restaurant last night. Had Beans with salsa...no cheese dip...wanted some but the kids had eaten it all when my beans got there! lol I ate them slowly and they went down easily. I did get full on about 1/2 cup, maybe a bit more. Didn't drink after I started eating. I really miss my Margaritas so I took a tiny taste of my daughter's. It seemed very strong and I didn't even want anymore. Funny, huh? When I do have a drink, I can tell that I'll need to be very careful. Funny how your tastebuds change when you are on liquids only. My favorite thing this week on Thick liquids is my yogurt. Carb Master from Kroger is very tasty and not too sweet. It has 8 g of Protein alone and I have been adding 1.5 scoops ( 20 g of prot) of Bariatric Advantage Unflavored Protein powder to the cup of yogurt. The unflavored powder is perfect fo me. It is light tasting...although it is a bit sweet and vanilla flavored (don't know why they call it Unflavored...not so much!) But I like it! So far, that is my favorite! Just received my shipment of unjury unflavored...will let you know how it goes! Glad to hear that you are doing well! I will be going in to weigh and for Support Group on Tuesday, the 24th. Looking forward to official weigh in! Take care and keep up the good work! I am so proud of us! WE ROCK! Barb -
Anyone not told kids about their lapband

How did you keep it from them when you came home in pain from the hospital and only drank liquids and ate mushies for weeks and now eat very little. -
Anyone not told kids about their lapband
MacMadame replied to angelface's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My kids all know. I like to be really upfront with them. My grandmom was rather secretive about things -- had breast cancer and didnt' tell us until months after the mascetomy, for example -- and my mom has always been a bit squirrelly about health issue -- told me she had an underactive thyroid when she was taking diet pills and then later couldn't remember having said that when I asked about her thyroid condition -- and I think that these sorts of things have impacted my relationship with them, especially with my grandmother. I don't want to put my kids in that position. So I've told them I'm thinking about it and dd and I watched a Lap band surgery together. (She's into blood and guts and science and thought it was cool.) I plan to bring her to a support group meeting at some point, too. I plan to bring dh because he's really going to have to change his cooking and grocery shopping style once I get the band. No more "Pasta and gravy" with no veggies two nights a week for us! -
Same here - I made my appt back in early Dec and it's next week. My BMI is 39.7, barely below the "automatic" 40 that most insurances will approve. But I do have high blood pressure, reflux and asthma, so I think it will get covered. however, I don't want to lose any before my appt just in case! So I've been eating whatever I want and just doing the normal walking the dog I've done in the past. However, it's a good time to work on the underlying reasons for eating. I've been seeing a therapist for 2 yrs about my eating, and for the longest time I ate out of anger and frustration at my (soon-to-be-ex) husband. We're separated now, but it still took me awhile to stop reaching for food when I'd get upset. Now I"m noticing that more of my eating is just grazing out of boredom and convenience. So I'm working on that - trying to break my automatic snacking while I read or use the computer, for example. b/c otherwise, after surgery I may sabotage myself by eating slider foods, etc.

Supervised Diet...i Haven't Lost Any Weight
linda305 replied to Sofficial's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's not the insurance company, it's your doctor. They want the procedure to be safer by shrinking your liver. My doctor told me the same thing. I knew i would be put on a two week liquid diet before surgery so i started on my own. I drank slim fast twice a day and something light for dinner. I lost 5 pounds the first week. But my doctor had me drink 5 shakes a day, and sugar free jello. I was told to lose 20 pounds within the two weeks but only lost 13. They just want to see your that trying. I had surgery last Tuesday December 3 -

It seems that every time I eat lately I feel a tightening up at the top of the stomache, It has been happening for about a week now and I wondering if anyone else is having the same thing. It doesn't matter what I eat or drink it happens. It has been 7 weeks since my surgery.

I'm hoping someone can help me out with some suggestions please. I had a gastric bypass 14 weeks ago which didn't go to plan and I had to have emergency surgery to repair my insides. I was left with a drain in for 6 week, which left me having to take antibiotics because it was leaking infection. Once the drain was removed I thought great I can start my new life. Unfortunately it hasn't turned out that way, as soon as I start to eat I feel sick, I go through the motions but nothing comes out this lasts between 5 minutes and 5 hours, I have even got anti sickness tablets which haven't helped I feel and look like an old woman even though I'm only 52 because of this. I hate looking in the mirror because a gray faced woman looks back, I feel weary and very ill because of it. It doesn't matter what I eat because I get the same reaction every time. I've been so poorly my mum has stayed with me for 12 weeks. I haven't had any follow up letters from my surgeon yet so I don't know who to talk to because my own doctor isn't clued up on it so doesn't know what to advise. Thank you to anyone that reads this post and I hope someone can give me some advice on what to do next. Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using BariatricPal mobile app

I tried HCG drops before I decided to have surgery. It gave me continuous period for weeks as well as feeling really miserable. Sent from my iPhone using RNYTalk

Boo, I'm on a plateau too. It's been about 2 weeks now. I'm hoping it'll break tomorrow because it's time! We'll see.

Nah, amourette, you're not the only one. I've just had a three day weekend so work has been strange today. Everybody tried to follow Monday's schedule instead of Tuesday's. I've met myself coming and going. Now I'm trying to get caught up on messages before I start in on my new grad school class. This is my fifth class and puts me halfway through with my Masters. WOW! I can't believe that. Pic

Super-Super Excited!!!
winifred76 replied to HeavyDutyQ-tee's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Extreme low carb the first 2 weeks no more than 30 carbs per day from condiments. All the Protein you want (without breading) green Beans and a host of other green vegetables, lettuce, cucumber, onion, etc etc. Stay clear of non green veggies or starches like corn, peas, potatoes, no bread, etc. Can have fat too.......... I'm finishing 3 weeks on it as my surgery is monday. eggs, bacon, sausage, etc etc all good. -
I'm so excited but my nerves are starting to show their ugly face---not gonna lie getting nervous too---why I don't know---my surgeon is amazing and I know that he does this day in and day out for the past 10 years but still....lol---been on opti fast diet for 6 days and down 10 pounds, more week of these shakes to go then it GO TIME

Hey Laurend. I wouldn't call it pregnant puff but I would call it muffin top. I swelled like someone with a beer gut. You know, high on the stomach? After a couple of weeks it started to go down and it would go down when I rested.

Cold Medicines--What do you take and how do they affect you?
derbygirl posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
This week I've been taking Tylenol Cold Multi-symptom...it's a liquid. But it makes me sick at my stomach. Any suggestions? I've tried on empty and non-empty stomach. Pre-surgery I always took Nyquil, but I heard it no longer has a decongestant (and they removed the "stuffy-head" part out of their slogan so I guess it's true). -
Okay, hoping one of you guys can help me by sharing your expeirecnces with restriction and fills. I had my first fill three months ago and have lost about 5 pounds since (all in the first month after the fill). I do feel some restriction. Sometimes I PB, sometimes I'm very tight, and sometimes I'm very loose (like today when I ate a large order of chicken with cashew nuts and 10 fried wontons in a single sitting). But I rarely if ever have that "full" feeling 10 minutes past my meal. I'm thinking that I need a slight fill to keep the food in my pouch longer but I'm nervous because I know how tight I can get at times. What do you guys think?

Tips for getting through plastics?
AvaFern replied to jess9395's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
I am also a planner and I read a lot of advice on this site. My first two surgeries which includes all of the procedures you are having plus a thigh lift were cake. My last surgery has been a complete and total B, which is what I get for saying, "ohhh plastics are easy", figures, lol. So..the most important advice to remember is that you will heal. You may feel miserable, you may not, you may be in a lot of pain, you may not, you may be nauseous, frustrated, and have to deal with consequences, and you may not, but above all else you just have to remember...time was going to pass no matter what, at least you're spending it healing toward having a fab new figure. In terms of practical advice, have everything at around waist to chest height. With the abdominoplasty you can't reach over your head and with the brachioplasty you don't really want to move your arms a whole lot at all, so minimal movement to get to everything is nice. The best thing I did for all of my surgeries was to put a press on nightlight on my nightstand. The first few nights, or even weeks, you wake up a little disoriented, in pain, and of course you have to go to the bathroom or find something. You just flop your arm over, smack on that light, and things are much less annoying. For all of my surgeries I also slept on what is kind of like a puppy pad for adults. It is designed for people who are incontinent, but it does a fantastic job of not destroying your sheets or your couch in case you happen to bust a leak or spill a drain while you are sleeping. You can wash them, they dry quickly, and I have been eternally happy that I bought them especially for my last surgery when I managed to bleed all over everything on a daily basis for awhile. I assume someone is driving you? If it is only 90 minutes, maybe reconsider the hotel or even just the hotel on the second night purely because your own home can be fully set-up for your recovery and you don't have to worry about whether or not someone cleaned well. You are so totally blitzed after they move you out of recovery and into your car that a 90 minute drive is not painful and you probably won't remember it. In your house everything can be somewhat close to sterilized, you will have your own bed and bathroom, and you can have all of your gauze, compression, wraps, pillows, and everything set up exactly how you will need it without having to worry about having to do the same thing in a hotel. Past that, you will LOVE your results, I'm sure. Plastics are the bees' knees. -
Hi all - well as the pre-op process sloooowly moves forward I am beginning to think of some of the logistics (time off work, specifically). I know that the recovery is typically a week or so before you can return to non-strenuous jobs. Does anyone know how long you are on heavy duty painkillers? I worry about going back to work with them in my system!

I was a little embarrassed about thinking of being nude on the table too, but not enough to not do the surgery! Also, I think they cover you up and only have your stomach area revealed during surgery... at least that's what I think. I was knocked out and won't see any of the people again except my surgeon. And I hardly see my surgeon anymore, usually just the nurses and office staff. Really, it will be fine! I did have diarrhea, but it was from the protein supplements. Both the soy and the whey were making me sick- even the vegan soy one! it didn't start until a week post op though- after it had built up in my system.
