Sharp pain below the rib on yhe left side
lady_moni posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Im wondering if anyone else has had this problem. I am nearly 6 weeks post op and for the last week I've been having sharp pain below the rib on the left side. -
I finished my last class on Friday, and I now have a tentative surgery date of July 28!! Only 5 weeks away. The past 6 months have flown by, and I can't believe I finally have my date! We're just waiting on approval from insurance now, but that's in Gods hands, and being as though I met their requirements, I'm not too worried. The reality of it all is really sinking in, but I am so ready and excited to start this next chapter of my life!!!

This is all getting very real!
Bonbini replied to JackieN78's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congrats on your decision to have surgery . Im 7 weeks post op and so happy I did this. I was so scared before the surgery and for me that was the worst part of the whole thing. Prayers for a fast recovery. -
Colonoscopy next week .... oh joy ....
Dawnakers replied to ChristyAZ's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Had mine and it was a breeze ... yes the prep sucked... but on a side note they did remove three benign polyps. TMI? Probably - but we are talking colonoscopies here... :-) -
I only have to do the diet one week before. I started Sunday with modified liquids. I'm allowed only veggies and plain warm cereals, protein drinks, jello/ Popsicles and plain yogurt. It's very boring but I've come to realize I don't need tht much food to function. What's the sugar buster diet?

Hi all! I'm on day three of my pre op diet. Surgery is the 30th!
-
Totally normal. The same thing happened to me. I had a week of nothing but protein shakes and diarrhea all day long. I found that chewable fiber (generic) helped firm it up a little bit, but really, when you only put liquid in.....it isn't uncommon for liquid to be the only output.

I like it, I especially find it helpful to recenter myself when I stray a little bit or I am struggling emotionally or physically, like for the past... three weeks? Almost a month, I have been stalled (I'm 64 pounds down, 6 months out) and being on here commiserating helps somehow. I stepped on the scale this morning and it finally moved. fantastic. I partially attribute it to being on here helping others get back to basics here and therefor reminding myself of what I need to do, and committing to better follow through.

Low energy and Out of Breath
ichabodny replied to cocosexy99's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi Cassey, Being out of breath and problems drinking your fluids at a few weeks out is very normal. Dehydration is probably the number one reason for er visits (I had that scare at around 3 weeks out too) so just keep chugging at it. I think the feeling of being normal happened only a few weeks ago with myself and I am now close to 4 months out. I recently started a new job at a factory with some lifting all night and even now on these nights, I find myself getting fatigued a bit still from the surgery. However, this all does eventually pass and get easier. Is your Dr following up with you? You should be able to sit down with that person to address the concerns you are having but they are normal. If you can get a propel water bottle or one with a very small 'sippy cup' end, it can really help a lot. Just try to keep on drinking slowly and getting it down as much as you can. Some days I still only hit around 50 oz and others I can get more then the 64 oz but it's easier now then what it was. I also work overnight so everything is a little wonky there. So sorry for the dumping syndrome. If you can get in with your NUT and Doc, it would be helpful to just get your concerns out there but from this end, it seems you are pretty normal in how you are feeling. Soon enough you'll start to get more normalized and feel some real benefits from the surgery-hang in there! -
Nervous About Liquid Diet
sowacorn45 replied to slatter's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is the beginning of my second week. I've been drinking protein drinks from store, jello (samll amounts), chicken & beef broth. My first week I didn't feel like drinking much cuz I hurt. I got alot of my drinks from the office I went to prior to surgery. -
Well I have found the past week and a half incredibly difficult. I have not been able to stop thinking about food. I feel like an addict trying, and failing, to detox. I have cheated every day except today! I just couldn't get control of myself. I didn't realise just how much pleasure I got from food and eating. I felt like my best friend had been taken from me never to be seen again! I know this is irrational but the 'need' to eat was so overpowering I just gave in. I truely admire people with will power! Luckily I seem to have gotten over this difficult time and I haven't cheated, or wanted to cheat, at all today! YAY! It is such a relief! I can only put the sudden change of heart and mind down to the support of my lovely boyfriend and the lapband site. I had been avoiding it during my 'cheating' stage as I think I just didn't want to NOT cheat. If that makes sense. I finally got back on it today and I'm really pleased I did. It is very supportive and I just feel so much better and sort of 'at peace' with the diet now. Gosh, what a head case! I also weighed myself today and I'm really pleased that dispite my best efforts to sabatage my progress I have lost 2.6kg/5.72pounds. I'm really hoping I will have lost a bit more before my op. The last thing I want is for my surgeon to tell me I haven't done enough!! I have really tried, really struggled, and now I'm finally suceeding! MUST KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!!!!!

Just Starting The Lap Band Journey
JustWatchMe replied to Makinchanges4me's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good luck and keep posting here. My experience was five days of pre-op Clear Liquids diet, followed by six, yes, six weeks of post op full liquid diet. Again, every doctor is different. Keep in mind, that when you hear the term "gas pains" here, they are not talking about abdominal digestive gas pains. People here are talking about a pain that is up in your left shoulder area, sometimes your neck, as I had. For me, it was relieved by someone karate chopping the back of my neck in rapid succession. They did this for me a few times a day. That, and much, much, much walking. Those will help the pain go away from the gas that is trapped inside your body cavity. Gas-X tablets did nothing for me, because it was not digestive gas. That said, I did not have enough pain to make me regret the surgery, by any means. I am extremely thrilled with my progress so far, and I would do it again in a heartbeat. I am now 11 weeks post op, I have dropped 55 pounds since my pre op regimen until now, I can walk without pain, and the list goes on and on. In my opinion, the medical staff explains what it can, which are basically the medical procedures that they perform, and the presentations that come through their office. However, if you wish to get real life experiences, and advice, keep coming to this forum, because here is where you will hear the day to day questions and answers and experiences of real people living with the band. One last piece of advice from me. Alex Brecher, the founder of this website, wrote a book called The Big Book of the Lap-Band. Look for it on Amazon or anywhere. I actually saw and read that book before I found this site. It will give you so much helpful and detailed information. Welcome! -
Dad update. He finally got the insurance confusion figgured out. His Medicare/Partners pays for it, so it will cost him his co-pay each month for the shots and he gets his first one next week!! Yippeee! He is SO ready for the good side-effects. What has been interesting is to hear people's reactions when they find out just how low his testosterone level is. Apparently, it's very very low. I'm supposing it will take a few months to get his levels high enough and his ascent to more energy, motivation, clarity, memory, and better mood will be a bit slower than, say, Mr. Tinks but he'll get there. Thanks everyone. Dear ole Dad is on the mend!

I have decided to take the plunge and post after reading this great site for a few weeks! I was just wondering if anyone has had a hard time focusing since they got their surgery date? That might sound weird, but I'm a little over two weeks out and it's hard to get things done because I'm so preoccupied with this impending change! I'm excited and nervous, but I also feel like I should be able to get more done in my life outside of surgery. I have a big final on Monday (I'm finishing grad school) and I'm not as prepared as I should be. Anyone else having this issue?

Concentration...
joatsaint replied to chasingpolaris321's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was nervous/excited/scared for a few days pre-op, but then I started pretending that it was just another day of the week and I didn't have surgery coming up. It worked for me! Right up till the wheeled me into the O.R. I woke up and asked, "Am I skinny yet?" -
Returning to school after surgery
RenewMe replied to iam_bLythe's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I will begin my last semester of grad school next week and my surgery isn't until 9/15. I don't expect surgery to cause me any great delay with my school work. My classes have all been online. I had several hardships over the last year related to caring for dad who lived in another state, his subsequent death, and the deaths of both my grandfathers. It was a crazy-stressful year and I seriously considered throwing in the school towel in January when I got a week behind. I was in tears and overwhelmed with everything going on. I got some much needed sleep, had a different perspective, and decided to take one assignment at a time. By the end of the week I was caught up. I made sure to keep my instructors aware of what was going on when I had to travel to care for my dad. Since I had a lot of group assignments, I also let my team know if I was going to be away from my computer for a day or two and what I would have ready for my part of the assignment. I found everyone to be very considerate and helpful. So for surgery, I'll let my instructors know I'm having surgery and will be down a few days. I figure I had one of the most trying times of my life last year and made it through ok. Surgery will be a breeze compared to that. Good luck with your classes! I'm sure you'll do great. -
Preop Newbie - Food Processers and Shakers & Preop Emotions
Mariew24 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, I am on the journey to preparing for surgery. I've had dietician visits, psychiatrist visit and attended support groups. I will see the surgeon in a couple weeks and hope to set my surgery date for November 3rd, or somewhere around there. I am exploring food processers and small blenders etc for shakes and purees. What brands/types would you recommend? Also, I am extremely excited about the possibilities ahead of me and at the same time I am pretty anxious and nervious. How are you all managing your emotions as you lead up to surgery? Thanks, MarieW -
I'm 6 weeks out and my NUT said I was cleared for all foods. I have to say I feel horrible today. My stomach just feels sick and sour feeling... I got worried and started reading my notebook from Dr. And it says no raw veggies or beef til 3 months. -__- I had meat (pepperoni slices) and small baby carrots yesterday. I'm worried.

Hi people! Just two weeks until I go for my sleeve...after a 4 year wait. I've found some great resources, but am wondering if anyone knows if the recipes from the Hungry Girl series are acceptable once I get to the appropriate diet phase? I ask because I really like that so many of the recipes are single serving. Thanks!

scared to remove 60% of my stomach forever.
zoftig replied to inmatchesout's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think most of us feel guilt and shame, but fact of the matter is that 95% of people who lose, gain it back...plus some. I finally realized I was not in that 5% so it was either make peace with my size or surgery, (which is the one thing shown to make inroads into battling obesity). Also, it's not like you get surgery and get to do whatever you want. Trust us there is still lots of work to do, but the sleeve is a tool making the motivation and work so much easier (I'm hoping, only one week out). You can still take pride afterwards in watching what you are eating. -
Since I started my 2 week liquid diet that has now turned into a 3 week liquid diet I have definitely noticed how beautiful food is in the pizza and hamburger commercials...I don't remember paying that much attention to them before! I have now started telling myself that pizza, burgers, fries, etc. are some of the reasons that I am now 3 1/2 days away from my surgery!

Hi everyone! I am just starting my surgery journey and need all the help I can get. I've gained and lost the 160 lb monster that's attached to me so many times it's insane. However, now with the threat of needing new hips it's just time for "her" to die. I have certain health problems but managed to dodge diabetes and cholesterol issues. I have high BP, now the hip thing, and sleep apnea. I am fairly active still for 330lbs doing hair about 50 hrs a week. I've been as high as 400lbz and as low as 189 in the past 10 years. I'm at the end of my rope. I need advice on how to get insurance to help pay. I have. BCBS of Louisiana. Has anyone here hD success with them? Any help is sincerely appreciated.

Alcohol use and surgery/anesthesia
Skywalker posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Was wondering about alcohol use and surgery/anesthesia. What is generally considered the rule for drinking when waiting to get surgery? Omit all alcohols or just certain types? Restrict intake to a certain level or cut it out completely? I enjoy a couple glasses of wine a few nights a week, but I can cut it out if necessary. I had read something that it is good to stop all alcohol 3-8 weeks before surgery as it can affect anesthesia, but I don't really know. I just want to be as safe as possible. (And obvious yes, I understand there would be no alcohol 48 hours before and after surgery, but I was looking more at long term use rules) -
Few random questions
Katcloudshepherd replied to Amanda-Lee's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Amanda-Lee My husband and neighbor, who is a good friend, were there the day of surgery and my cousin drove me home. I was not able to drive for a week after surgery. I was still on the pain medication and my cousin was driving me around in my vehicle. I was able to get back in the pool to exercise two weeks out and was back to work in three weeks. I work in an office so it isn't a physically demanding job. I hit a period a couple of months out where I tired easily and felt exhausted all the time. I don't know if it was a delayed reaction or what. That was my experience. I wish you well with your surgery and hope you have an easy recovery. Blessings, Kathleen -
Anyone from DE/PA/MD
keish_lorraine replied to zcortes21's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I feel great after surgery. My pain went away a week after being released from the hospital. I've already gone back to work. I don't even feel like I've had a big chunk of my stomach removed.
