Welcome! If you can't find a bariatric support group near you, you might want to see if there is an OA group nearby. OA also has some phone and online groups. You can find out more at OA.org. BariatricPal is also a great source of support, information, and encouragement. Best of luck with your surgery.

lap band surgery denied by tricare
GoSetReady replied to crafty mama's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I hope your appeal goes through. I understand your frustration. The requirements through Tricare changed on 2/14/11 to the following: Check out the Federal Registrar to see if this may help your case. I spoke with the Tricare director in WA and was told the change was effective 2/14 but Tricare reps might not know about the change for a few months. http://federalregister.gov/a/2011-3207 Show citation box (A) Payment for bariatric surgical procedures is determined by the requirements specified in paragraph (g)(15) of this section, and as defined in § 199.2( of this part.Show citation box ( Covered bariatric surgical procedures are payable only when the patient has completed growth (18 years of age or documentation of completion of bone growth) and has met one of the following selection criteria:Show citation box (1) The patient has a BMI that is equal to or exceeds 40 kg/m 2 and has previously been unsuccessful with medical treatment for obesity.Show citation box (2) The patient has a BMI of 35 to 39.9 kg/m [2] , has at least one high-risk co-morbid condition associated with morbid obesity, and has previously been unsuccessful with medical treatment for obesity. -
Emotional Rollercoaster...anyone Else?
Caribear replied to 4kmarie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've heard that with any surgery it is natural to go into a depression afterwards. Doubly so if you have had bariatric surgery, I would imagine, because it involves such a major lifestyle change. Not to mention that anesthesia can cause you to feel down for several days too! I am pre-op still, but am keeping an eye out for depression after surgery, especially since I went into such a downward spiral after my gallbladder surgery last year. It amazes me that none of my doctors, not even my therapist, told me that this was normal! I had to read it in a WLS book. Hang in there, it will pass. If you're not feeling better in a month or so, talk to your doctor please. Sending you hugs and prayers <3 -
I started at 135.5 kgs and I am 174cm. I also have had no issues and her follow up care is fantastic. I have also realise a female bariatric surgeon is a rarity, for me it was a bonus.

I feel like im having too many calories with all these chewable vitamins
Sweetcarol238 replied to Sweetcarol238's topic in Food and Nutrition
I recently changed them. Can't stomach the bariatric ones I bought a few weeks ago. I'm sure it will be fine, but I am super nervous with everything. Lol. -
Conversion from lapband to sleeve - lower BMI
JRT Mom replied to Stella84's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I think it is ridiculous that if you need to have a revision to a bariatric procedure from a failed initial one that you have to wait to regain all your weight before you can get another! If you met the criteria for the first procedure and had surgery and now need another the insurance company should be satified that the patient is still a candidate. Most of us had our first surgery because of health considerations and to expect us to regain all that weight to have the revision surgery is unhealthy and a waste (waist!) of time. I have to have a lap band removed and fortunately (or unfortunately) I have already regained enough weight and have two new comorbidities so I don't have to gain even more to get my revision. -
Lies to tell people about what surgery I am having
Frustr8 replied to a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I finally used Keto Diet and also, that my allergies had flared up. Anyone who has known me very l9ng would know I have fought quite a battle with them in the past. One semi- friend told me if I had completed my series of allergy shots, I wouldn't have any problems! The fact that when I was terminated from my job and lost that insurance, I had no money to continue, did not enter into her mind. Perhaps she thought my pretty face would be enough payment. So to her I let my allergist take the blame instead of my bariatric surgeon. Oh if she had been a nicer type I MIGHT have told her the truth. There are people I have been totally honest with but MY LIFE-MY BUSINESS - if you are not paying for it, you are not required to KNOW ANYTHING! As Edith Anne on Laugh- in and Manny Yocum from Little Abner have said" I HAS SPOKEN!" -

Anyone having surgery on 11/6?
happymama2014 replied to ASHMAGS's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Me too! My son is 7 and first I told him surgery because they did find a tumor on my liver last month then decided he will tell people I don't want so I just said they are going to look at my insides. @ nprcowboy Supplies-I got two months of various Vitamins required through my kaiser program. All but one is chewable or liquid but got them at walmart, cvs, online at (celebrate vitamins) to get it all. Don't want to worry bout crushing pills! I also ordered 2 kinds of Protein powder (flavored), 1 unflavored to add to Soup, yogurt, applesauce. Got a Ninja blender, food thermometer, insulated cups for sipping, blender ball shakers for on the go. Tummy binder, slip on walking shoes, gas x strips. From grocery, Jello, sugar free (sf) pudding, Popsicles, lowfat cream Soups, strainer, light and fit Greek yogurt, in chunky unsweetened applesauce, Cream of wheat. Some premade Protein Shakes for the on the go but just a case because I may not like em later! Try bariatric pantry. Got done samples and after surgery will order more things for the rest of the month. -
What will happen if I drink caffeine?
angelface811 replied to MariaElena1983's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I agree get clearance first. Also, do not count it as part of your liquid intake as it is counterproductive. I also suggest researching caffeine and bariatric surgery. Why they would prefer you don't have it? Beyond being a diuretic... -
I think most of us had to have a sleep study to check for sleep apnea - that's a pretty common screening for this surgery. I can't remember if that was a requirement of my insurance or my bariatric clinic. I had it closer to the beginning of my journey, though.

Some times I feel like a failure
CowgirlJane replied to newlady2015's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
What was your start weight? I currently weigh about 162 and i sure as heck don't feel like a failure... guess it is all relative. I lose weight best when I limit carbs, exercise regularly, drink lots of Water and basically follow the bariatric rules. -
At the Crossroads - revision?
liannatx replied to Snufflegus's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I agree with @@James Marusek that you should not say that the sleeve didn't work. You have in fact proven that WLS will work, and that you can follow a plan and have success with it. With the amount you still want to lose it seems that a bariatric surgeon would agree that the malabsorption aspect of the RNY might be the boost you need to lose to an even healthier weight. Be positive and be proud of your success so far. -
why do i need a sleep study
Lynn Schmibo replied to roeroe's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Alot of overweight people have sleep apnea or sleep disturbances and don't know it. They like to rule that out or your insurance may request it for Bariatric surgery! -
My trick for getting down the protein bullets was to mix it with Water... that tones down the flavor and sweetness. Plug nose and get it down. Having been through three bariatric related surgeries I can say with certainty, the protein is one of if not THE most important post-surgical element. It sucks, but everything functions around that... healing of wounds, internal healing, skin, hair and organ function, etc. The first couple of weeks are VERY hard, at least they were for me... but now, I'm holding on fine. Once I was able to get to the "full liquids" phase, I was MUCH better off than Clear liquids... Hope this helps! :lol0:

Any advice??Band has slipped a 2nd time now considering the sleeve
love2shop replied to love2shop's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I did well the first year and half when I they repositioned my band, but since then I have stayed the same and have not lost anymore. I am hoping to get into the bariatric surgeon soon and they will do the surgery all at one time. I don't know alot about the sleeve but that is what my doctor recommend to be. What made you choose to have the sleeve? -
Got My Sample Pack Of Syntrax Nectar
rahnava replied to Jlewis229's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
BJs Bariatrics and those sample packs saved me a lot of money. Now I know which ones I like and don't like. The Lemonade Flavor = gag! -
There are two types of bariatric patients. Those who are chomping at the bit to get the surgery and get going, and those who have fear, cold feet, buyers remorse... however you want to put it. All I can say being on the other side for coming up to four years banded in January, is.....do it man! All the nonsense with timing, appointments, family stuff, personal stuff, whatever...is just that. Nonsense. Don't procrastinate my friend. Jump into the deep end. Believe me...you will be in such a better place a year from now. Why delay that? And so you know...I went into this kicking and screaming. I would have done anything to avoid it but my back was against the wall as I was heading towards a wheelchair full time. This is me just over a year ago and the before pic was easily 50 lbs. less than I was day of surgery. So..not only no wheelchair in that picture, but here I was riding a friggin' bike in preparation for a trip to London...which included a ton of walking. So believe me when I say that the grin you see is 'gen-you-wine' happiness. Time for you to have your happiness too. Good luck!!

Weight during preop
SpartanMaker replied to Capri81's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know it's frustrating, but most likely this is just water weight. When you start dieting, the amount of glycogen stored in your muscles and organs drops pretty dramatically since you're not taking in enough carbs to replenish the glycogen. This depletion of glycogen also causes scale weight to drop in the form of water loss. Over time, those glycogen stores are renewed, which also causes you to put the water weight back on. This phenomenon is even worse if you also add in new exercise, as your body needs extra water in your muscles to help repair the micro damage that exercise does to your muscles. If you feel sore muscles, you can know for sure that you're storing extra water. I suspect there's another factor at work here: stress. Elevated stress levels causes you adrenal glands to make and release a hormone known as cortisol into your bloodstream. Among other things, elevated cortisol levels can actually slow down your metabolism, meaning you're burning fewer calories at rest. -
I will second GBLADY41's critique of BariatricPal MX and Dr. Illan. I was sleeved on 8/7/2017. It was awesome, and the charge was only $4,600. I received the best care ever at Oasis of Hope Hospital. I can not emphasize enough the value and piece of mind that I felt knowing that everything was taken care of for me. All I had to do was fill out an online questionnaire, pay a $500 down payment to hold my surgery spot, and show up at the San Diego Airport. Bariatric Pal MX and Dr. Illan both receive an A+ from me on everything. Give them a try. You will not be sorry!

2 weeks out and feel like I have a tight corset on...normal?
Rainbow_Warrior replied to Charity G's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Normal for some. Sounds like the time to telephone your bariatric clinic and/or surgeon for advice ... "to be sure to be sure" as my Irish pals say! -
If you are exercising and lifting as you say, your calories are probably too low. My nutritionist had me up my calories from 900 to 1300. I usually hit it at +/- 100 calories of that daily. I go to the gym 4-5 times a week where I run and lift those days spending about 90 minutes there, on my non gym days I walk for 2-3 miles. The nutritionist told me I need the extra calories if working out, if not the body holds on to what it can for survival. You may want to speak to a nutritionist that works with bariatric patients.

Did you have to share a room in the hospital?
notmyname replied to jasmineinmymind's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'd call and ask. Even if your roommate isn't a bariatric patient, vomiting happens. I was VERY sick after my 2nd hip surgery because I do not tolerate anesthesia very well. That will be true no matter what surgery I have - and could be true of your roommate.
