I am week 4+ and loving it. I was scared to go out at first (not sure of what maybe being sick). I just take a freezer lunch bag with yogurt, Protein liquid gel, or anything I may need. Oh and a big thing of Water. I got to start soft foods early because i became lactose intolerant. Hope that goes away. Other than making myself get out (cause of tiredness) I am so happy. Losing weight and going down sizes + the thought that this is just the beginning. No more yoyoying weight ---- all down from here!!!! I have never had that feeling before. I had a 2 week preop shake diet too and am down 32 lbs since that started. Anyone else excited with stories? Please share. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Eating after surgery
ivorythomascina replied to missengineer's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi, I was sleeved on 6/30. I just went for my post op visit today and only got my 'ok' for yogurt, pudding, milk and Protein shakes today. I think you added things too soon-clear liquids and Jello for a whole week is the norm. I did get the 'ok' however to do this: I tried the unflavored protein powder in MIO-yuck???? so I tried it in broth(broth can't be too hot and you do have to really stir it in to mix), and It's pretty tolerable! 1/2 pk or 1/2 scoop(10g protein ) in 8oz broth. Four times a day I had 4oz. See if that helps w energy and hunger. Gradually add the shakes and yogurt back into your diet. Good luck! Sent from my LGLS740 using the BariatricPal App -
I went to the Caribbean 6 days after my op and took powdered Protein with me (slim-fast and New Direction Protein shake powder provided by my practice) as well as my shaker. I mixed those with iced Water or milk. For lunch, the resort was good enough to make me smooth veg Soups and for between meals, I had some soy milk or soy yogurt to keep the protein up. You can do it. Enjoy your holiday!

Same surgery day here, but my diet for a week after was ONLY Clear liquids...yogurt and Protein drinks don't start until 7 days out (today). My doctor told me he didn't care about protein until at least 5 days out because of the almost guaranteed nausea. I had my first added Protein powder on Monday and got about 20g that day and 20 the next. Now that the first week is up, I can add yogurt and other non-clear liquids. Obviously it's too late for this info now, but I think what you experienced was normal given you were allowed to have those other fooda. Maybe take a day or two to just focus on clear to see is you can settle things down, and possibly talk to your NUT.

Late June Sleeve Buddies?
magoosmom replied to Maggie143's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Today is my 2 weeks mark! My checkup isn't until tomorrow afternoon but I've gone ahead and tried some puréed bean soup and some mushy carrots. Both were good but neither filled me up. Still better than just broth and protein drinks! Headed to the grocery store to stock up on items. I can't do eggs or any meat for two more weeks. But I am still excited to add grits and oatmeal and yogurt lol. My scale says I am down about 19-20 pounds. I was hoping for more but I know it will come off. I had puréed foods at 10 days post op, so not too soon at all really. Life for me on the protein shakes was hard because I was lactose intolerant immediately post op and the shakes that were lactose free made me violently vomit, but once I got to start adding in soft foods like yogurt, it got easier. More choices make thing so much easier! You are doing fine. It's just the part of the recovery very few doctors explain to their patients unfortunately.

The same is happening for me. Protein shakes 2 oz every 20 min hurts. Yogurt and pudding hurt me too. I tried 1oz of Protein shake every 10 min and put another 1 oz of a different liquid in between- this helped a bit but not great - just take smaller sips and take ur time drinking Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I had my surgery on 6/29/16, I'm feeling great, pain is manageable with the pains meds given and I could easily fool myself into thinking that I didn't have any surgery if it wasn't for the incisions. However, I'm having problems eating. I can easily drink Clear liquids at room temperature but the moment I switch to a Protein shake, yogurt, or applesauce I start having spasms or pain in my stomach. I take baby sips. In almost a week, I have only drank about 10 oz of Proteins shakes and 2-3 oz of yougurt plus all the clear liquids. Is this normal? How long before I can start handling anything other that clear liquids with more ease? I need more nourishment in my opinion, if not just more calories. Any feedback is appreciated. Before doing anything different, always always ALWAYS consult your NUT. Advancing your diet before your body is able is a recipe for disaster. That being said, I was advanced to puréed foods at 10 days post op. Things on that list included sugar free yogurt, sugar free pudding, mash potatoes mixed with unflavored protein powder, ricotta cheese, refried beans, cottage cheese and even runny eggs smashed. This is the part of the program where your brain and your body are not on the same page. You have to learn to follow your steps and ignore what you think is hunger, because it isn't. It's just your head talking a pretty game, but the longer you follow your rules and stick to the steps, the easier it gets. I'm almost 9 months out and I do get hungry sometimes and sometimes I don't. It matters what you put in your body to make it not be hungry. The rules are a must. At about 4 to 6 months that's when hunger starts making it's comeback so it's important to have the rules down to heart before that happens otherwise you will likely go off the rails easier.

Once you get past that bloaty gasy feeling and the scale starts going down, down, down I hope it will help! My favorite thing was popsicles. I am a yogurt lover and ended up having lactose issues 1.5 weeks postop. But if you don't have that issue plain greek yogurt with flavored powder or not is filling. I am 4 weeks out and have days were I cant fathom Protein shakes still. Did you learn the trick about adding plain or unflavored protein to crystal light and Water (or sugar free grape crush)? It just takes like a refreshing drink. I never had food cravings at all --- but my family was good to keep things away. I was more worried about not wanting to get sick. Week 3 loved canned pumpkin, applesauce, and my savior top quality deli turkey and then deli roast beef. Eat slowly and chew it all the way before swallowing. A few days ago I had about an oz of ground beef with a sprinkle of cheese. Also hummus and avocado. I'm approved to try soft white fish tonight with sweet potato mashed. I also found a lot of interesting cauliflower dishes on Pinterest. The thing I did was only introduce one food per day so that i could make sure nothing caused issues. When the weight starts pouring off hopefully you wont look back but you do need protein to be full and healthy. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

My program never gave limits on size of meals. My sleeve does that. My guidelines have always been Protein based. I need at least 100 grams of protein a day. That means I have to eat frequent small meals and Snacks. It is a physical impossibility to get 100 grams of protein in 3 meals no matter what size (1/4 cup, 1/3 cup, or 1/2 cup). Plus, the size depends on the density of what I am eating. I can eat more Greek yogurt or cottage cheese than chicken or steak.

Are you having difficulty drinking your Protein shakes? Is that the reason you're drinking such a small amount?.....How about other fluids? How much liquid are you getting in?......Dehydration can also make you feel hungry. First work on getting your Fluid intake up to at least 64oz a day....then work on getting in your protein. Did your team give you goals for fluid and protein? Are you on the full liquid stage?....My full liquid stage included Greek yogurt....if it's part of your plan yogurt may help you.

Calorie Intake 4 months post op
Bufflehead replied to Porkchop911's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
After purees, my plan used weights rather than volume. The rules I was given were: Purees: 3 meals of 3 tablespoons (max) per day, no snacking other than protein shakes. Soft foods: 3 meals of 3 ounces (max) per day, no snacking other than protein shakes. "Regular" diet: 3 meals of 5 ounces (max) per day, no snacking other than protein shakes. So, if I had wanted to add more calories, I would have either eaten more calorie-dense foods for my meals (examples, eat full fat yogurt instead of nonfat, use peanut butter instead of PB2, blend protein shakes with whole dairy milk instead of almond milk, replace an ounce of meat or veggies with an ounce of cheese) or drink more protein shakes. Have you talked with your dietitian about your concerns? Sitting down with him/her and going over what your goals are, what your results have been, and what you would like to do in the future can be very productive. Good luck! -
Calling all March bypass surgery dates!
swizzle replied to Soexcited's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
A typical day for me is a protein shake for breakfast, hard boiled egg with hummus and fruit for lunch, Greek yogurt for snack, dinner I'll usually have a lean protein like ground turkey or chicken and I'll just prepare it the same way I make my family's dinner but I'll just have that. I haven't been able to add much else to each meal, and veggies take up a lot of space for me! But spinach is okay or cucumbers if I chew really well! Lol! For exercise I am kind of addicted, but I try and do 60 minutes at least 5x a week... Most times more. I used to be really active (even when I was 120+ lbs overweight) but it took a few months after surgery to get really back into the swing of things, because my energy level just wasn't there yet! -
Calling all March bypass surgery dates!

Typical day for me is a Protein shake or Greek yogurt for Breakfast, salad with a Protein like chicken for lunch and 3-4 oz of protein for dinner with some veggies. I eat a lot of raw veggies like carrots, cherry tomatoes and cucumbers as Snacks and also have one to two servings of fruit a day. Right now I can't stop eating Bing cherries! Meals are still fairly small, about 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup of food per meal -
Fat free refried Beans with shredded cheese melted on top; pimiento cheese; Laughing Cow cheese wedges; mashed avocado; ricotta bake (see your other post - I replied); Greek yogurt w/ 1/2 scoop of vanilla Protein powder added; sugar free chocolate pudding snack w/ 1/2 scoop chocolate Protein Powder added. These were my go tos. You will likely have to keep drinking Protein shakes to get your protein in during this phase. (At one month post-op, I still drink 1 Premier Protein ready made shake per day to insure I get protein). Having said that, do you have to limit your protein to a certain amount? I know that there is some concern about too much protein affecting kidneys though as little as we eat, it is unlikely to reach "too much". Just be sure your kidney Dr is aware and possibly does protein tests occasionally. (I have chronic kidney stones and my Dr always watches to make sure it isn't too much protein. I get about 100g to 115g of protein per day and it hasn't been an issue yet though this reminds me I am die for a 24 hour urine test. Yuck!). Best of luck! You are doing good planning. @@Daisee68 How'd you do? I'm two weeks post op as of today. I haven't been eating much because I'm not hungry and broth, cream of chicken and greek yogurt can only be interesting so long. Need to "make" something.

No vomiting but tons of belching
FocusOnMeNow replied to Aliel84's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are eating too much too fast. Belching is natural and normal and even more so after a VSG. My guess is that you are pre portioning softer lunch foods and eating more dense foods for dinner and or not measuring out your two oz. 11 months out if I try to eat a dry chicken breast or salmon it sits like a rock compared to almost everything else I eat (eggs, cheese, yogurt, etc). Ironically pan fried bacon goes down easier (perhaps because there is more soft fat than in the chicken breasts). -
1st Day of Pre Op Liquid Diet- Surgery in 8 days
Sugary Sweetheart posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Today is my 1st day of my pre op liquid diet. I had a Protein shake with greek yogurt and coconut Water for Bfast. Home made vegetable broth for lunch and a SF popsicle. A Green drink with hemp protein for a snack and a Protein Shake with almond milk for dinner with a half cup of SF Jello. I drank 12 8oz cups of water. I had worked out for 40 min doing cardio and I'm afraid I've created this headache that won't go away. Is the headache from heat, exercise exertion or lack of food? Has anyone overcome this feeling. I don't want to think I'll have this headache until after surgery. ...please help? Thank you!- 23 replies

Struggling
healthier&happier4life replied to Melissa1014's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 2 weeks out from surgery. I like the Inspire Protein shakes. I mix the protein with skim milk, so one 8 ounce serving yields 29 grams of protein. That really helps me. Also, the Danon Fit & Light GREEK yogurt is really good. I get it in the 5 ounce size which yields 12 grams of protein. So, one Protein shake and one yogurt gets me more than half way to my protein goal. Also, you can add the unjury unflavored Protein Powder to your chicken broth or cream of chicken Soup (strained). Not bad. I think there are good medical reasons for waiting and following the dietary directions. -
As the others have said, chicken is too tough. Tuna is very mushy so can be easily swallowed and digested at very early stages. How do you make your tuna? I don't know if that might make a difference. I now use non-fat plain greek yogurt instead of mayo to make mine. I also put in relish. I don't know if you should or not but it's the only way I will eat tuna.
