    getting very discouraged

I have to say- albeit unsolicited- that this is a prime example of why teenagers should not get lapbands. Brain research has shown that adolescents power to reason and determine action and reaction are not fully developed. You are told when you get the band that it is a life-long commitment that requires constant doctor visits and supervision. The consequence of not doing these things are weight gain. Also you are told how and what to eat. If you keep eating the wrong things the wrong way you could cause damage, not only to the band but to your stomach and esophogous. You or your parent needs to invest money into making sure you get proper follow up care or you will surely fail at losing weight and the surgery will be for nothing. I know it comes across as harsh but there is really no other way to say it.

    Feeling Shame about gain

It took me over three years to get over the embarassment of weight gain!! I haven't had a fill since January 2007. I am determined to get back on track. It's never too late!! Go back to your doctor!! You have this wonderful prosthetic device inside your body, use it! Call your doctor right away (he's heard and seen it all, trust me!) Give your weight loss the jump start it needs. P.S. I went back tail between my legs after a 30+ pound weight gain.

    Sudden 5 pound GAIN?

In order to gain 1 pound you have to consume 3500 extra calories, so to have a "true" weight gain of 5 pounds you would have had to consume an extra 17, 500 calories above your suggested daily intake in the last week. Since that really isn't feasible don't stress out. Your body is going through a lot. It isn't unusual for the scale to fluctuate when you start back to normal foods, your body is trying to figure our what is going on. Just continue to follow the rules and don't have a glass anywhere near you at mealtime. This has been an easy one for me but we all struggle with different things (mine is getting enough water). The scale will move in the right direction, just give your body some time to work through all this. In the meantime eat healthy foods and reasonable amounts (whatever your doctor suggested). I experienced the same thing prior to my first fill. For me, I had to stay away from the scale and weigh only once a week. We have so much fluctuation day to day that the ups and downs drove me crazy and caused too much doubt in myself and what I had gone through - so do what is best for you about the scale. HTH!
  4. I too didn't realize you got all your fluid taken out Nicole. But I know you can get back on track - you did great on the pre-op 1200 calorie diet - maybe you should go back to that? I hear you Tina - as we have found out most of our journey is not really about food - it is just our drug of choice to cover up the other issues. I truly believe that for me at least it is maybe better that I didn't get to goal in the first year as then I wouldn't have started to deal with my other issues and started to change my behaviors. I won't probably get to goal even in this second year (end of Aug will be 2 yr since I got banded), but that's okay too. I can't give any advice to the people who have sleeves, but I can let the bandsters know that if you think this is a quick fix - it isn't - and it wasn't intended to be one. It is all the gaining weight, losing weight, gaining weight etc. that messed up our metabolism to start with.
  5. I am psyched for this and can't wait for surgery so I can put the last 15 years of see-sawing weight gain behind me. Now just turned 41, I know I won't ever get back to that 25 year old fit footy player but I am very excited about making permanent changes that WILL have results. My dream is to be able to buy clothes from a 'regular' menswear store instead of having to find "high and mighty" (big men) stores. Currently 130kgs (286 pounds) I am hoping to lose 35kgs (77 pounds) but most of all being able to run around the park with my daughter climb rocks with her and race her in the pool etc. I can't wait for the change. I have already given away drinking in preparation (losing 3 kgs/6.5lbs) in a short time. I meet with the Dietician next week and then on to the 2 week pre-op diet before surgery on June 3 with Dr Copp here in Brisbane. Happy days ahead!!

Thanks all for the b-day wishes! Riley: I believe i mentioned this before but, statistics show, that falling in love is the #1 cause of weight gain. (#2 is winning the lottery LOL) I hear you about stress, money, bill collectors, bridezillas throwing around expensive commands, lack of work, blah, blah, blah! It all adds up and the next thing you know... Hang in there honey pie you'll find your mojo soon enough! Pat - have you picked out a name yet? I love Poison Ivy but that is way too sexy a name for this beast - might wanna stick to Cruella. Elvira is good! G.I. Jane or Bionic woman, ooh, Isis - remember isis - not the egyption goddess but the superhero! There's Medusa or Tanya (harding LOL) Buffy and Xena the warrior princess - the list is endless hahahaha Sometimes rambo feels like medusa - turning my food to stone in my throat! John - glad you'r enjoying yourself with your old friends. Can't wait to see new pictures - I, on the other hand, haven 't lost any wieght. Crazy cuz i don't really eat much anymore but I've fallen back into my old habbits - eating nothing all day long then snackin in bed at night - just messin up my metabolism. I'm so friggin lazy LOL. I have been trying to have protein shakes for b-fast just to get the ball rolling. I really don't want to eat but my mouth wants to snack. Love to Nikki! Coco - so glad you called tonight - wuv u Chrissy - so glad my hubby & I got to hang with you and Dave today - even more glad that you aren't psychotic - now i can relax around you my "bosom" buddy LMFAO. Jes - Thanks for dinner wednesday. greatly enjoyed myself & my jello shot (shhh). See you soon. Tina - haven't heard from you girlie - keep me up to date on what's what~ Pammie - how are you? I can't get my emails thru to you guys - UGH! Ali - how are you doing thus far? I just want you all to know that my cat didn't come home last night! She NEVER leaves the front porch let alone stays out for more than 10 minutes a day so i was freakin out - I was up every hour checking for her. I got no sleep so I'm delerious - time for bed!

    How did you get fat?

How did you get fat? It's not as easy to answer as how did you get pregnant it is? I think it was many things for me and 45 years is a very long time. #1 Genetics. My father was 500 pounds and had his stomach stapled 2 times. He was 500 pounds again when the cleaning lady came and found him on the floor suffering from a massive stroke. It left him completely paralized. I guess he could only communicate by blinking. He died at age 63 from his obesity related illnesses. I was only 18 months old when he and my mother divorced and he was a deadbeat dad. I met him when I was a teenager. I did not grow up seeing his eating habits and my mother was very thin and ate healthy. So I am thinking genetics with that one. My sister is also obese. I was a chubby kid and did deal with teasing. I thinned out as a teen and was very mature for my age. That led to dating older guys and getting married at a young age. I had a baby at a very young age, but can not blame that for my weight. I only gained 19 lbs during pregnancy and it came off as soon as I had the baby. I ended up being in an abusive marriage. I divorced the jerk and started making it on my own with a toddler in tow. It was very hard because I was so young and wages were low for me. I got very thin because sometimes I could only afford food for my son and not myself. I couldn't afford cars that ran for long, so I did quite a bit of walking. I got too thin for my frame. I was about 128 lbs and size 7 jeans were baggy. I met the great guy I am married to now and he moved in. I was 21 by then and my son was 4. With 2 incomes we got on our feet quickly and I could afford food. This would be my #2 reason for the weight gain I guess. I ate because I could! Food was so darn good and going out to eat was such a treat. I treated myself a lot. I chose whatever I wanted on the menu no matter the cost or the calories. reason #3.....YO-YO dieting for years! I tried every diet on the planet and then some! Take off 30 lbs- gain 40 lbs, take off 40 lbs - gain 50 lbs .......... reason #4..... I gave up! I was FAT! There was no getting rid of it for good and no use trying. It only made matters worse! reason #5 ..... hysterectomy at a very young age. reason #6 .... fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndroms.......constant pain and no energy. I ate for energy. Fast forward to 2009. I weighed a whopping 264 lbs! Then I got banded! I have lost 86 lbs and now weigh 178! I want to get to 150 or lower and keep it off!
  8. Cool thread. I loved to eat, but I always played sports. I was active and could eat like that, but then I went through a bad breakup with my ex-fiance. I didn't start really gaining weight until I was a Sophmore in college. I thought I don't want any other guy to treat me that way so I will eat. Well I stopped blaming him for my weight gain, but I didn't stop eating. I dieted on and off for a few years with diet pills. I lost 40 pounds with those, but when I went off them the weight came back on. I then decided I wanted to look good in my cousin's upcoming wedding, and I knew I would have health problems later down the line so I decided to have the surgery. I'm glad I did so far.

    Anyone with a Stricture?

GASTRIC STRICTURE Any procedure that was performed with the intent of restricting the amount of food the stomach can hold as a means of achieving weight loss can potentially lead to a permanent and excessively tight area of the stomach, called a stricture. This can follow a gastric bypass, a stomach stapling procedure, an band procedure or a gastric sleeve. The symptoms of a stricture are very similar to those of a Slipped Band and may include: CHRONIC VOMITING OR REGURGITATION OF UNDIGESTED FOOD EXCESSIVE WEIGHT LOSS UPPER ABDOMINAL OR CHEST PAIN AFTER EATING Relieving these symptoms can sometime be accomplished by simply stretching the stricture, usually with an endoscopic dilator under sedation. The relief may last a few days or many months, depending on how tight the stricture is and how easily it could be stretched. When this treatment fails to provide lasting improvement the solution is reoperation. The surgeon's goal is to open the strictured area sufficiently enough to allow food and fluids to pass through without difficulty, typically using a procedure known as a stricturoplasty. One of the side effects can be weight gain since the restriction has been eliminated. Occasionally, the stricturoplasty is combined with another procedure to help maintain the benefits of prior weight loss surgery. However, in this situation the main objective is to restore the anatomy of the stomach to the point where the patient can eat enough to maintain healthy nutrition.

You got to move it, move it.

I never shut up about it, it sneaks into all my posts! I am a passionate runner! During my weight loss phase, I ran a LOT - an hour six days a week, sometimes an hour and a half. All of that cardio stripped the weight off my body. Longer term, I've toned it down a bit. I love it so much, I want to be able to do it forever. I fulfilled a desire to do a half marathon, but my body is not really built for running, I'm an enthusiastic runner, not a gifted one. I stick to about 7 or 8kms maybe 4 times a week now - its just enough to keep the weight off, keep me keen, but not to get sore knees, hips and heels. Other days I do a bootcamp session, that's INTENSE! One day is cardio, the other strength training and he's just introduced a boxing session also. I'm going to drop the cardio session (I get plenty with my running) and do the boxing instead. Its a good balance for me, I manage to fit it all in around full time work. At the moment, I'm also running 3kms at lunchtime 3 days a week because I'm training the grade 3 to sixes for the upcoming cross country. Lots of cardio based stuff with bodyweight strength training works for me - I like to look long and lean, I dont have a great deal of muscle, but I like the look of the body I have and dont really want more. I can eat what I want without worrying about weight gain too.

    Ok sooooo

Just shy of 5 months post-op... Down 40lbs, when I was down almost 80... my doctor says "Don't worry Yvette, this is normal. Especially in people with your body type, your weight gain is muscle not fat, don't be upset." Ok so I'm not gonna lie, I'm a lil' upset. I KNOW I build muscle really fast, and I KNOW muscle weighs more than fat.. I get all that.. I KNOW my weight is down and so are my clothing sizes and inches. I'm just I dunno.. a lil' skewed on all of this. I finally got to a fill point where I was almost "too tight" but it was working.. I missed my follow up fill because I was traveling.. and so I went to my month appointment yesterday and although I was down 8.8 pounds which I know I should be happy about and I am.. I'm just like shouldn't it be MORE... I don't even know why I'm complaining.. I shouldn't be. I guess I'm just feeling the pressure of my 6 months and then my year coming up and my own personal goals in there.. relax Yvette...slow and steady wins the race...

    I am bummed out......

There is a product called suplimed that is a high calorie shake with good balanced nutrition used to help support or gain weight for those with illness. Ask him if he would consider operating on you if you upped yourself to a maintenance calorie level before, during and just after the proceedure... It may not work, but I thought I would throw the idea out there. The Weight Gain Supplement That's Your Sensible Weight Gain Solution p.s. I use this product for my normal calorie days as I am experimenting with 3 day low cal,1 day normal calories to see if it will prevent stalls. It does taste good.
  14. I think season three's winner did gain all of his weight back. They had some kind of show either on the discovery health channel or TLC about his weight gain and how he was going to get it off again.

    Weight Loss after Surgery

A low weight is worrisome as you may have limited physiologic reserves. Should a patient with a BMI less than 22 or 23 after weight loss surgery become ill, they may lose additional weight and have a difficult time recovering. If your weight is very low and even if you feel good, you should still be seen by your surgeon for lab testing and counseling on how to maintain or increase your weight to a safer, healthier weight. Usually, a year or two of being very thin is followed by a 10 pound weight gain that gets most patients into a perfect goal range.

    Sleep apnea?

I really hope my sleep apnea goes away! I have had terrible sleep quality for friggin ever, and while the CPAP helps me sleep better, it still interrupts my sleep and doesn't get me to 100%. Plus, I hate not being able to fall asleep anywhere but in my bed (and taking it on travel... ugh, takes up so much room!) What I was wondering is did anyone have to have CPAP adjustments while actively losing because their CPAP pressure was now too strong? I just had to have my CPAP pressure upped after a few years and about 35 lbs weight gain, so I am wondering if after losing that weight if I'll need to drop it back down again. Luckily, I was right there when they adjusted it in the office so I know I can do it at home (no special anything required other than knowing what buttons to press.) Just wondering what experiences everyone has had, and if there are any helpful clues or signs that your pressure is too high.

    December Delights 2009

For the ladies (sorry guys, close your eyes). Does anyone else have problems with monthly water weight gain? 5 - 8 pounds is common for me. What works? -K
  19. This is SO SO SO good to see, i had band surgery on April 9th and have lost 18 lbs and gained 4 back ... My nutritionist took me off carbs, and put me on a high Protein diet. I lost 2.5 lbs. in 3 days  I am eating 5 small meals a day, which also helps me a lot. The weight gain IS a little discouraging, but its worth it. I go for my 1st fill on May 14th, so hopefully it will help w/ the fact that im hungry during the night time, im up late 1-130am, so thats when i used to snack, guess my brain hasnt caught up to the fact that i have the band lol:laugh:. Good luck to all.
  20. I totally agree that everyone should share whatever they want. I just have to clarify...you are exactly 17 days post op..right? You say you were on liquids for 2 weeks right? You had invasive surgery less than 3 weeks ago right? Without any further research would it be reasonable to surmise that the weight gain would be from surgery and a full liquid diet? I believe so. Your doctor SHOULD have given you realistic expectations but by your anger and comments it is CLEAR the/he did not. Well, now you know. How you choose to proceed is completely up to you. I would be upset as well if my doctor didn't give me detailed information..but I also did MONTHS of research for myself before making such a HUGE risk of surgery..and everything everywhere states pretty clearly what the expectation with the band is. I find that many people just take what their doctor has to say and runs with it...NOT ME!!! Not to sound rude..but your expectations are not going to be fulfilled as you had thought..I would regroup, educate myself and start again with a positive and fresh mindset. No need to dwell on what cannot be changed in my opinon..best of luck!!!

    3 Year Round-Up for Feb07 Bandsters

I do apologize for not having come back sooner...but I also can't promise that I'm back. I don't like the atmosphere of this forum. Too much hatin' going on here. I had managed to get from an all time high of 285 down to 225 within the first 8 months, but then my dad died, and that sent me into a tailspin. I started eating the wrong foods (comfort eating) and started gaining back...then I did something colossally stupid. I went in for a fill because of the weight gain. That made me too tight, but I was in denial about that, so I just kept eating the wrong foods. As you well know, the wrong foods do not get stuck. Whenever I did try to eat properly, I ended up being stuck. Every. Stinking. Day....until I quit trying so hard. Eventually, I went in for an unfill with a promise to myself to re-evaluate when I'm ready to try again. This resulted in me regaining all but 15 pounds back. About two months ago, I got on the scale and it read 267. This is only 18 pounds lower than my original pre-surgery weight. Do I regret getting the band? Absolutely not. See...when I went in for pre-op testing, I found out that I'm diabetic, I had high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. I have never had to take any meds for any of those conditions because of the band. I have been to the doctor every 3 months for the past 3 years, and all 3 of those conditions are "Perfectly Controlled" through diet and exercise. Every pound I've put back on is because of a bad choice or choices that I've made. Maybe in the near future I'll be able to make the decision to re-commit myself to the bandster lifestyle and go back for a fill. Until then, I'll just keep slogging along, trying to eat better and exercise every day. Thanks for reading. I hope this finds everyone healthy and happy.

Banded on the 28th feeling sore

Welcome to bandland Cathy. I was banded on the 27th. I came out of anesthesia early while my incubator was still in and started vomiting. So my throat is very sore. I also have the gas pains and rumbling in my stomach right after a meal. But I feel full. I also have the weight gain effect but I'm not worried at all. My fear now is that my arms, legs, and neck feel very week. I haven't had very much to eat since Monday afternoon. I hope as I keep working on the proten shakes that my strength will return. My port site is a little sore but now it's just the gas and muscle weakness that's bothering me. I'm going to take a walk today.
  23. We remortgaged our house to have some home renovations done and we were going to redo the bathroom but I have decided a new paint job and towels will do the trick in there and that extra money is going for a boob job when the time is right. I was a D since I was 18 and then the last 10 years when I got really heavy was a DD - large DD - popping out my bra. Gaining and losing weight excessively the past ten years has caused one breast to be much larger than the other and after four children and the weight gain and loss they are SAGGING! Okay with a good bra on but not so attractive without. No cute tank tops or bathing suits, etc. I'm not too thrilled about surgery or recovery because I heard it's horrendous but I need things augmented and put back where they need to be!!!
  24. Has anyone gained weight before their first fill, and possibly after? I've gained like 4 pounds in the past 3 weeks.

    Exercise=Weight Gain? Help!

Is it true that increasing your cardio will make you gain weight or stall for a bit? I have doubled my cardio and keep fluctuating between 2 pounds on the scale. Is this muscle holding onto water? Will drinking more water (I average about 80oz) help? TIA!
