    Alcohol Abuse

My name is PDXMan and I am an alcoholic. One of the toughest phrases I ever uttered, but one that has saved my life. As has been mentioned, AA has been the program I have used to keep me sober. You may wonder, "How does AA keep me from drinking?" It doesn't. It shows you how to live life on life's terms. Once you start doing that, you see that you don't need alcohol or drugs anymore. For me, alcohol isn't my problem. I am my problem. Alcohol was my solution. Until it wasn't anymore. If it is no longer your solution, then try finding one that has worked for millions. All it takes is some willingness to make a change. That's it. And showing up ... BTW, it also works for other drugs of choices, too. It's a scary thought, not having your coping mechanism around, but it just might work.
  3. I had my surgery on tuesday of last week (so 8 days ago). I went to my doctor today to make sure everything is healing well. He told me that I have healed so well that I can start eating any kind of food, exercise, and drink alcohol (as long as I mind my calories). He made an appointment for me to get my first fill in seven weeks. I ate about a 1/4 cup of rice and about an 1/8 cup of chicken for dinner with no problems. Although I feel totally fine, I still find it odd that I have permission to do everything 3-4 weeks earlier then is typically allowed. Did anyone else start eating solids one week after surgery?

I'm 37 and very proud of it and the name calling came from you first miss thing- if ur on a forum and want advice take it with a grain of salt and not publicly insult people that have tried to help u - and honestly this is such a waste of my time to spend on u - good luck on ur journey bc alcohol shouldn't be ur number one concern but it shows how mature u r and all the comments u left on here - enjoy ur life journey

Alcohol and 2 weeks post op!

I didn't mean to come off rude but some people were calling me a b***h and other names , guess I went into defense mode. And there are so many different boundaries of when not to drink alcohol . Some surgeons say 3 weeks 1 month 3 months just thought I would put it out there . Guess shouldn't be so truthful next time . But I do apologize if did come across rude to any of the people here. . I really do like these threads they have been really helpful!

    Drinking... Alcohol anyway...

And I really don't understand why there are so many different boundaries with alcohol ! Some surgeons say 3 weeks , 1 month , 3 months , 1 year , never !!! Can't they all get on the same page !!! Or somewhere close within range of each other ... Jus sayin

Yeah and be careful what you post about alcohol on here lol you don't want hate mail like I Have received !!! Cheers to you
  8. Not really scared of the surgery, but about not being able to eat much or drink alcohol after. I keep thinking "how am I going to act in social situations?" Will I be a different person? Am I going to be the "odd duck", while all my friends are having a good time? One of my favorite things is to go out for a prime steak & a few glasses of wine. Will I be able to do that? Lots of questions....a little uneasy, & scared. I hope I'm making the right decision. Surgery is set for a month away. On a brighter note, I booked a quick little vacation to Mexico for next week. I thought a little rest & one last fiesta would help me tackle these thoughts & fears I'm having.

Alcohol and 2 weeks post op!

If you can't abstain from alcohol long enough to let yourself lose weight and heal, then how will you control yourself when it comes to food? Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should. Your surgeon must be losing marbles, because I don't know what surgeon in their right mind would approve alcohol consumption LESS than a MONTH out. It seems as if you weren't and still aren't in the right mindset for this journey. If you didn't want people coming at you like you have, then you shouldn't of posted something that sounds so incredibly ignorant. To come on here and boldly say that you're less than a month out and enjoying alcohol is bound to attract negative comments.

    So, here goes! pics

Thank you Missy, thank you so much for your kind words. You know I will be divorced 2 yrs this coming June, wow, how time flies. The hardest part for me is, I still love him, dang him. He just up one day and decided he wasn't happy and left, later I found out it was another woman. Yes, I was at fault too, we hadn't been happy in the last few years but I also want to add that I had watched him become an alcoholic the last 4 yrs of our marriage, not violent, just out drinking every night till the wee hrs of the morning and watched him lose a high paying plant managing job and college education to alcohol. He is a good person and we had many wonderful years, he was good to me. Guess that's why I still love him. Don't know why I got off on this, guess I needed to get it off my chest tonight. When I can let go of him, and the good Lord knows in His time I can feel pretty. But for now, it's time to focus on my weight loss, my health, me time, and maybe someday remarrying, woohoo....heehee. Had to find humor in there somewhere didn't I? Thank you again Missy. Donna

Yeah I have issues with alcohol because I had a couple sips of a drink ... That's a joke also
  13. Are you kidding me?!! Boycott a store because they put some yummy, sugary, pastries on sale? This is about taking responsibility for you choices and actions. That would be like an alcoholic saying, "Poor me, I'm trying to stop drinking, but alcohol is everywhere. They even sell beer and wine at the grocery store!" How about a law against fast food restaurants, all you can eat buffets, donuts, sodas, candy? I don't mean to sound harsh and flame me if you want but the whining and blaming have to stop. Perhaps those of us with overweight parents and grandparents should just give up. It's their fault too that were fat! It's not like we walk in to a store and if you're overweight, you get charged more for your food than the thin people. Perhaps diabetics should complain and get a special discount on what they get. BTW, overweight people cost this country more money. Overweight people tend to have more health problems, take more sick days from work, go on disability, etc. Someone complained about the cost of weight loss surgery. Well, for heaven's sake, if you weren't obese, you wouldn't need the damn surgery. Of course it cost money. Perhaps plastic surgery should be discounted for unattractive people or people that need it to feel better.

    Attention ! Australian Sleevers

Hi Seth and welcome to the group. This is one question that concerned me the most prior to my surgery. I was scared that things would never be the same again. I initially started out thinking that I didnt want anything permanant. Through the process of investigation of the options I found that it was the best option for me. I dont say t hat the sleeve is the best choice for everyone, we all have different needs and wants in life. What i do know all the fears I had pre-surgery about what life would like after surgery and things never being the same again were wasted energy. Post surgery, yes I eat less, the only time I really notice that now is when I am eatting out but I have developed ways of dealiing with this, either share a meal with friends or order an entree for myself. I can eat pretty much the same things that I did pre-surgery, however generally now my body craves good stuff that I can derive more engery from rather than junk food. I am in maintenance and yes I still eat junk on occasion. I still drink alcohol, maybe a bit slower but doesnt really feel like it. I guess what I am trying to say is that while it is a permanant measure I dont feel like it is an impact to my life now. Life isnt the same for me but in every way it is better, cause I took control of my life. For me my eatting/weight was defining me, it doesnt now. Just my 2 c from 16 months out.... Welcome sconatsam!! Way to go Lila!! Way to go!! *insert cheerleader singsongy thing here*...double digits here you come..I know how much of a landmark in the process is. You are seriously rocking your sleeve. Swiftkate, hopefully all is still going well with your recover
  15. I don't have pain if I eat too much it just wants to keep trying to come back up my esophagus. Then I spend the next hour or more trying to keep it down. Really annoying. I'm still on full liquids and have been trying to actually eat something 3 times a day like cream of wheat or a soup, but really I feel better when I don't. It's like alcohol though. No real signs while I'm eating then about 10 mins after a meal WHAM it hits me. Too late by that time.

Alcohol and 2 weeks post op!

Asking when it is safe to drink alcohol, eat a cheeseburger or anything does not mean one person is any less serious about this surgery than another. My best suggestion is always to follow what your surgeon advises you to do. Not what Jane, Jimmy, or Johnnie's surgeon advised them to do, because their surgeon doesn't know you! As long as you are following the guidelines set forth by your personal surgeon, you should do fine. These forums are here for everyone, pre-sleeves, post-sleeves, veterans, etc. People come here for advice, support, sympathy, to see if others have experienced the same things they are, to vent, to learn, etc. Everyone should feel free to post without the fear of being attacked, ridiculed, accused of being a troll or anything else. I am so disappointed in the turn our forums have taken lately, so much negativity, so much of "my way is the only way", seriously, it just needs to stop. If you want to offer advice, that is fine. Do so, but do it in a positive, meaningful and respectful manner or simply don't respond at all and move on to the next thread. If you don't like someone's response, thank them, disagree in a positive, meaningful and respectful manner, or simply ignore their post altogether. If you can't respond to something without calling people ignorant, stupid, being the grammar police or any other names or violations of our forum rules, then please do not respond at all. This has gone on long enough, members are leaving the forums because of this, people are afraid to post and it must stop NOW! Thank you. Susan, VST Forum Administrator Sent from my iPad using VST

Alcohol and 2 weeks post op!

I asked my surgeon if I could drink at a month out. He said it was fine, would just slow the weight loss. As far as negative effects, if you're not careful you will end up with a drinking problem because you're substituting your food addiction for alcohol. It doesn't effect you any stronger or faster than anyone else due to no intestinal redirection like the bypass. I have not noticed any difference... Just not able to drink as much or as fast as I used to... Good luck and be careful!!!!!

    Drinking Alcohol....

I wouldn't do it, nor do I have any desire to drink. I will later on in life maybe some wine at a wedding or special event. If I did, I'd want to wait 6+ months out naturally. There is such a high risk for alcoholism among RNY patients especially; it's astounding. Alcohol is absorbed entirely different now in our bodies.

Alcohol and 2 weeks post op!

Nurse Grace, you are a wise, wise woman. I'm very new to this site, and I found this thread so entirely offputting. Well, not so offputting that I didn't read the entire thing. I knew I wanted to post a response when I had read a few replies deep, and felt I should read everything that had been posted before I said anything so that I wasn't speaking out of turn. My response is this: It is attention-seeking behavior at its finest. I'm surprised that so many other posters called out people on attacking her (setting aside what must have been some entirely innapropriate responses from a now-banned former member), but no one responded to the fact that many people were attacked right back with blanket statements and it was suggested that they're "eating cheeseburgers," etc. The people who responded with vigor did so out of concern, and because of the attitude in which this thread was started, while many responses from the OP were inciting, petty, and reminded me very much of the bullying I endured growing up due to my weight. It was also pointed out many times by the OP how other people complain so much about this site. If that is the OP's belief, then why post here at all? It seems as though she was looking for a reason to post that, which again is just inciting. So, while I think a good administrator would be doing their job by officially closing this topic, I was highly motivated to post being that I am a pre-op, and I suddenly thought with horror of a possibly less-informed pre-op or fresh post-op coming across this thread and seeing it as evidence to the positive that they too could drink. The information is there on the possible damage alcohol can do early on, and it's all been listed already in full. Side with caution, future readers. Side with the part of yourself that felt surgery was a good option for you because you were concerned about your health and wanted to give yourself the best chance for a better life. Surgery is a drastic measure, and a tool with which you have been entrusted. Don't risk throwing your investment away on a momentary thrill or two minutes of feeling good. That's what many of us did for years before surgery, which is why we ended up needing it in the first place. There will be time for those enjoyments later, when you're feeling good for years at a time because you made so many right decisions for yourself in the journey. Save it as a celebration for reaching your goal a few months or years down the road, not as a way to tempt fate now. Save it for when you can raise that glass in a toast with your friends and say, "I did it!"

Alcohol and 2 weeks post op!

Hey!! Just thought I would let u know what I was informed doing my 12 week classes..... They say that it thins the lining of the stomach and causes ulcers and with such a tiny stomach it isn't good just as we aren't supposed to take any NSAIDS. They also say it thins ur blood making higher risk of bleeding and leaks and the inability for ur stomach to heal properly.... It goes to ur blood stream much quicker and is rough on ur kidneys trying to process all the medications that have already been in ur system on top of the alcohol.... I hope that helps a little.... Good night all

    Wine

Red wine works for me, some of the whites are too crisp and irritate my stomach, and margaritas are a little rough for my band as well. So take it very slow to see how you do. Oh, beware that the alcohol hits you faster because there's not much in your stomach and you're not eating while drinking!!

Alcohol and 2 weeks post op!

I thinks its horrible someone that has gone thru this would give another such a hard time. Come on...we are all in this "together" and each person is different. I havent personally drank any alcohol....never did much anyway....but I have wanted to try a glass of wine with dinner. Im just too scared to do it. So I have repeatedly volunteered to be the DD if others drink. Im sure Ive had other stuff I shouldnt. And really get tired of others monitoring what I eat. I used to be a daily Starbucks Venti Vanilla Latte & Coke girl. And was really cranky when I didnt get my daily morning coffee. I stayed away for the first 2 months. I go get my coffee every now & then...but I get the small one & havent finished one yet. If you totally take away something someone has enjoyed their entire life..they are just going to want it more. Im taking it slow. Trying to get my exercising & vitamins going again (they were making me sick) & Im all about eating my protein & drinking as much as possible. I dont drink alot anyway. But I still work at what I need to do because I have a goal. I and others can see what I have lost so far & Im wearing my old, smaller clothes & that makes me feel good & gives me motivation. Keep up the good work everyone!! We are totally rocking this!!
  24. You just pay for items that you use out of the fridge, 2 bottles of Water a day are free and sodas are $2. So not terrible...the alcohol is pricey, but we don't drink . When I get released from the hospital we are going to go to Walmart to get stuff so it will be cheaper. I plan on picking up a few extra gatorades and my mom will get Snacks and drinks. We could have walked there today...but we were EXHAUSTED and practically collapsed in the hotel beds for 3 hour naps.
