I had my surgery on 6/29/16, I'm feeling great, pain is manageable with the pains meds given and I could easily fool myself into thinking that I didn't have any surgery if it wasn't for the incisions. However, I'm having problems eating. I can easily drink Clear liquids at room temperature but the moment I switch to a Protein shake, yogurt, or applesauce I start having spasms or pain in my stomach. I take baby sips. In almost a week, I have only drank about 10 oz of Proteins shakes and 2-3 oz of yougurt plus all the clear liquids. Is this normal? How long before I can start handling anything other that clear liquids with more ease? I need more nourishment in my opinion. Any feedback is appreciated. Before doing anything different, always always ALWAYS consult your NUT. Advancing your diet before your body is able is a recipe for disaster. That being said, I was advanced to puréed foods at 10 days post op. Things on that list included sugar free yogurt, sugar free pudding, mash potatoes mixed with unflavored protein powder, ricotta cheese, refried beans, cottage cheese and even runny eggs smashed. This is the part of the program where your brain and your body are not on the same page. You have to learn to follow your steps and ignore what you think is hunger, because it isn't. It's just your head talking a pretty game, but the longer you follow your rules and stick to the steps, the easier it gets. I'm almost 9 months out and I do get hungry sometimes and sometimes I don't. It matters what you put in your body to make it not be hungry. The rules are a must. At about 4 to 6 months that's when hunger starts making it's comeback so it's important to have the rules down to heart before that happens otherwise you will likely go off the rails easier.

Once you get past that bloaty gasy feeling and the scale starts going down, down, down I hope it will help! My favorite thing was popsicles. I am a yogurt lover and ended up having lactose issues 1.5 weeks postop. But if you don't have that issue plain greek yogurt with flavored powder or not is filling. I am 4 weeks out and have days were I cant fathom Protein shakes still. Did you learn the trick about adding plain or unflavored protein to crystal light and Water (or sugar free grape crush)? It just takes like a refreshing drink. I never had food cravings at all --- but my family was good to keep things away. I was more worried about not wanting to get sick. Week 3 loved canned pumpkin, applesauce, and my savior top quality deli turkey and then deli roast beef. Eat slowly and chew it all the way before swallowing. A few days ago I had about an oz of ground beef with a sprinkle of cheese. Also hummus and avocado. I'm approved to try soft white fish tonight with sweet potato mashed. I also found a lot of interesting cauliflower dishes on Pinterest. The thing I did was only introduce one food per day so that i could make sure nothing caused issues. When the weight starts pouring off hopefully you wont look back but you do need protein to be full and healthy. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

My program never gave limits on size of meals. My sleeve does that. My guidelines have always been Protein based. I need at least 100 grams of protein a day. That means I have to eat frequent small meals and Snacks. It is a physical impossibility to get 100 grams of protein in 3 meals no matter what size (1/4 cup, 1/3 cup, or 1/2 cup). Plus, the size depends on the density of what I am eating. I can eat more Greek yogurt or cottage cheese than chicken or steak.

Are you having difficulty drinking your Protein shakes? Is that the reason you're drinking such a small amount?.....How about other fluids? How much liquid are you getting in?......Dehydration can also make you feel hungry. First work on getting your Fluid intake up to at least 64oz a day....then work on getting in your protein. Did your team give you goals for fluid and protein? Are you on the full liquid stage?....My full liquid stage included Greek yogurt....if it's part of your plan yogurt may help you.

Calorie Intake 4 months post op
Bufflehead replied to Porkchop911's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
After purees, my plan used weights rather than volume. The rules I was given were: Purees: 3 meals of 3 tablespoons (max) per day, no snacking other than protein shakes. Soft foods: 3 meals of 3 ounces (max) per day, no snacking other than protein shakes. "Regular" diet: 3 meals of 5 ounces (max) per day, no snacking other than protein shakes. So, if I had wanted to add more calories, I would have either eaten more calorie-dense foods for my meals (examples, eat full fat yogurt instead of nonfat, use peanut butter instead of PB2, blend protein shakes with whole dairy milk instead of almond milk, replace an ounce of meat or veggies with an ounce of cheese) or drink more protein shakes. Have you talked with your dietitian about your concerns? Sitting down with him/her and going over what your goals are, what your results have been, and what you would like to do in the future can be very productive. Good luck! -
Calling all March bypass surgery dates!
swizzle replied to Soexcited's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
A typical day for me is a protein shake for breakfast, hard boiled egg with hummus and fruit for lunch, Greek yogurt for snack, dinner I'll usually have a lean protein like ground turkey or chicken and I'll just prepare it the same way I make my family's dinner but I'll just have that. I haven't been able to add much else to each meal, and veggies take up a lot of space for me! But spinach is okay or cucumbers if I chew really well! Lol! For exercise I am kind of addicted, but I try and do 60 minutes at least 5x a week... Most times more. I used to be really active (even when I was 120+ lbs overweight) but it took a few months after surgery to get really back into the swing of things, because my energy level just wasn't there yet! -
Calling all March bypass surgery dates!

Typical day for me is a Protein shake or Greek yogurt for Breakfast, salad with a Protein like chicken for lunch and 3-4 oz of protein for dinner with some veggies. I eat a lot of raw veggies like carrots, cherry tomatoes and cucumbers as Snacks and also have one to two servings of fruit a day. Right now I can't stop eating Bing cherries! Meals are still fairly small, about 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup of food per meal -
Fat free refried Beans with shredded cheese melted on top; pimiento cheese; Laughing Cow cheese wedges; mashed avocado; ricotta bake (see your other post - I replied); Greek yogurt w/ 1/2 scoop of vanilla Protein powder added; sugar free chocolate pudding snack w/ 1/2 scoop chocolate Protein Powder added. These were my go tos. You will likely have to keep drinking Protein shakes to get your protein in during this phase. (At one month post-op, I still drink 1 Premier Protein ready made shake per day to insure I get protein). Having said that, do you have to limit your protein to a certain amount? I know that there is some concern about too much protein affecting kidneys though as little as we eat, it is unlikely to reach "too much". Just be sure your kidney Dr is aware and possibly does protein tests occasionally. (I have chronic kidney stones and my Dr always watches to make sure it isn't too much protein. I get about 100g to 115g of protein per day and it hasn't been an issue yet though this reminds me I am die for a 24 hour urine test. Yuck!). Best of luck! You are doing good planning. @@Daisee68 How'd you do? I'm two weeks post op as of today. I haven't been eating much because I'm not hungry and broth, cream of chicken and greek yogurt can only be interesting so long. Need to "make" something.

No vomiting but tons of belching
FocusOnMeNow replied to Aliel84's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are eating too much too fast. Belching is natural and normal and even more so after a VSG. My guess is that you are pre portioning softer lunch foods and eating more dense foods for dinner and or not measuring out your two oz. 11 months out if I try to eat a dry chicken breast or salmon it sits like a rock compared to almost everything else I eat (eggs, cheese, yogurt, etc). Ironically pan fried bacon goes down easier (perhaps because there is more soft fat than in the chicken breasts). -
1st Day of Pre Op Liquid Diet- Surgery in 8 days
Sugary Sweetheart posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Today is my 1st day of my pre op liquid diet. I had a Protein shake with greek yogurt and coconut Water for Bfast. Home made vegetable broth for lunch and a SF popsicle. A Green drink with hemp protein for a snack and a Protein Shake with almond milk for dinner with a half cup of SF Jello. I drank 12 8oz cups of water. I had worked out for 40 min doing cardio and I'm afraid I've created this headache that won't go away. Is the headache from heat, exercise exertion or lack of food? Has anyone overcome this feeling. I don't want to think I'll have this headache until after surgery. ...please help? Thank you!- 23 replies

Struggling
healthier&happier4life replied to Melissa1014's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 2 weeks out from surgery. I like the Inspire Protein shakes. I mix the protein with skim milk, so one 8 ounce serving yields 29 grams of protein. That really helps me. Also, the Danon Fit & Light GREEK yogurt is really good. I get it in the 5 ounce size which yields 12 grams of protein. So, one Protein shake and one yogurt gets me more than half way to my protein goal. Also, you can add the unjury unflavored Protein Powder to your chicken broth or cream of chicken Soup (strained). Not bad. I think there are good medical reasons for waiting and following the dietary directions. -
As the others have said, chicken is too tough. Tuna is very mushy so can be easily swallowed and digested at very early stages. How do you make your tuna? I don't know if that might make a difference. I now use non-fat plain greek yogurt instead of mayo to make mine. I also put in relish. I don't know if you should or not but it's the only way I will eat tuna.

Post-op purée suggestions...
NewAngela replied to Laughkc11's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Strained or blended soups, cheeses, refried Beans (taco bell pintos and cheese was a NUT approved staple), guacamole, hummus, yogurt, ricotta cheese (part skim) with tomato sauce. I also ate avocado with hard boiled eggs and occasionally mashed potatoes or mushed sweet potatoes. It took me a bit to tolerate tuna fish and scrambled eggs. They were too textured for me. Not losing weight at all, just want to cry. Help!
AmusedMuse replied to AmusedMuse's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I wish it were that simple but I am not 'stalled', I am gaining weight. I misspoke above and am only 2 weeks out of surgery, not 3. I am following exactly the diet the nutritionist gave me, but your point about Protein is a good one. I've been eating salmon for protein, and sugar free yogurt, but still have several days to go before I can begin to add things to my diet. The nutritionist seemed more concerned about malnurishment than weight loss and though I was told to have protein, I was given no target amounts. For years I have tracked my foods and weight and I have never eaten much in the way of starches, sugar, or fried foods and haven't started in the 2 weeks since my surgery. In fact, having had 1 day of terrible pain and vomiting since my attempt at a scrambled egg gave me a blockage, I am scared to eat much at all and am very careful not to overeat. -
Not losing weight at all, just want to cry. Help!
AmusedMuse posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had my operation 3 weeks ago, an RNY bypass, and weighed this morning. To date I have lost 3 pounds. That loss includes the fasting before surgery and the day of 1 cup of yogurt only, plus the day I tried a scrambled egg and ended up blocking my pouch and not eating all day. A low BMI patient with a starting weight of 187.3 (at 5'4" my BMI was 32), I already had a very controlled caloric diet, eating only 900-1200 calories per day and essentially low carb. I was slowly gaining weight on that which is why I opted for the surgery. When the nutritionist went over my post-op diet I told her it was the same number of calories I was already eating but she had no reply to that. Some of the items I was to eat daily were things I would never have had before my surgery, such as toast, jam, and mashed potatoes. I also still have a large lump a couple of inches below (internally, down in my belly) the hematoma which remains where my drain was placed, and basically no energy. I am upset and very frustrated especially when I think of what I've put my body through and the expense, only for no results other than scars and lumps. Does anyone have any suggestions? -
My food is often imitated, never duplicated including by me!

I have always had the ability to scrounge something up out of just about nothing. Tonight was no exception. I made a steak salad with a Mexican flair. I dug through the refrigerator I made up a substitute for sour cream using yogurt, adobo Chiles and God only knows what kind of salsa I found buried in the back of the fridge. It was much hotter than I intended to be but it wasn't half bad. I don't believe that this was such a good idea and apparently neither does my body based upon the horrible stench that is erupting out of my rear end on a semi-regular basis. -
No, it is not too soon. Try the yogurt first since it is very soft and easy to swallow and digest. Just take a very little spoonful at a time. You might be able to eat half the container. But, you might also only be able to do a couple spoonfuls. That's okay. Things are not going to taste good so soon after surgery. Just do your best to get the fluids in and your Protein. Just get as close as you can. Don't force yourself to eat or drink if you just can't. But, make sure you do whatever you can. I'm a little curious as to why some surgeons don't have people follow a pre-op diet. Makes no sense not too. Good Luck.

It is common for patients to be unable to meet their Protein and Fluid requirements during the first few weeks after surgery. Their bodies are in a major heal mode. Keep trying each day and you should be able to get there. My taste buds changed after surgery and many things tasted terrible. You may need to experiment with various types of Protein shakes in order to find one that you can tolerate. There are a wide variety out there. You don't have to like it, just tolerate it. Can you drink milk. Eight ounces of 1% milk has 8 grams. If you fortify the milk by adding in a quarter cup of dry powdered milk, it bring it up to 14 grams. Yogurt (light smooth variety) was on my approved lists of foods from the beginning. But it cannot be the yogurt with the fruit on the bottom. Greek yogurt has substantially more protein than normal yogurt.

I am only 5 days post op and am struggling with the liquid diet. Part of me is disappointed the surgeon didn't require a pre op diet to mentally prepare me for this. I'm having a hard time getting the Proteinshakes in......nothing seems to taste pleasant. According to my paperwork from the hospital, I can begin to add soft foods (yogurt, cottage cheese, etc) in 5-7 days post op. Do any of you think it's too soon?

CALLING ALL JULY 2016 SLEEVERS
Candygyrl replied to Tresa Embil's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sorry to respond so late. So i am now day 2 post op. Sleeve date 7/1. Very sleepy that day. Anesthesia took some time to wear off. Day 1 post op went well i think. Pain was controlled although quite sore when trying to get out of bed. I walked quite a bit i had to force myself to pee. I tolerated my liquids no nausea but tons of gurgling sounds. I couldn't tell if I was hungry or wtf? Day 2 post op. Today. I cried twice. Went to the grocery store with my hubby. Sat in the motorized cart. Cry #1 The gas makes me quite uncomfortable. I can't pass gas. I hardly burp. Sooooo i can't eat. If i feel full down there then how can I force it? No significant intake of fluids which scare me. Came home after the grocery store. Tried to fix cream of wheat greek yogurt and Protein shake. I ate 1 babyspoon of cream of wheat. My husband is inviting people over for the holidays I'm pretty upset about that. So he and the kids were cleaning up around me and I was so annoyed. Then he gets up to go to a firework party with his friend. I cried again. My daughter witnessed me this time. I couldn't help it. I just felt so helpless and uncomfortable. I've been walking. Gas x strips, prilosec, and it just doesn't help. I can't eat or drink. I'm not regretting I'm just uncomfortable. I hear maybe day 3,4, or 5 may be better. I just thought I'd have gas with all the farts, and belches that go along with it. So that's my story for now. Hopefully this is over soon.
