finally a veteran...

Congrats on becoming a vet! It is easy to get discouraged, not just by the scale, but LIFE. I think it is important to keep the perspective of focusing on how much you have acheived - both health benefits, mobility, looks etc rather than comparing yourself to what you envision as "ideal". You would be shocked at how many women at a "normal" weight despise their own looks. It really is a waste of energy. I was told by my NUT and found it to be try that as long as you keep "working it" the sleeve will keep working for you. You CAN continue to lose weight as a vet, just keep on keeping on. I know what you mean about sometimes thinking how long the journey is - for me, when i weighed over 300# it seemed impossible to get to a normal size/weight, but i did it. I too thought about the ladies who were "only" 75-100# overweight... but in the end that doesn't really matter. It only matters how I live my life, not how I compare to anyone else. I can be bad about Vitamins sometimes... and then get back on track, but I implore you to get your Protein in. As you are losing weight, adequate protein can help maintain your muscle mass. It can also prevent hair loss and other unpleasant things like that. Anyway, keep posting on the vet forum! Welcome!
2. Has anyone ever got denied surgery from any of the Kaisers in southern california? and if so why did you get denied. The reason im asking is because im quite scared that they will not give me surgery because i am on week 10 of the options classes and have not lost any weight. My weight fluctuates, it goes up and down, but never past my first weigh in.. Back at week 4, I had an appointment with sarah turner an MD from the metabolic center and she told me if i didnt lose weight that the surgeons wont operate on me. I find this dissatisfying because throughout the whole options classes they did not tell anyone that they would have to lose a set amount of pounds such as a certain percentage of weight. Its just getting closer and closer to graduation and im starting to worry that i wont be eligible to have surgery.

Update on my dilemma

I had to wait about 5 extra months because I ended up being diagnosed with uterine cancer (hysterectomy cured me, thank goodness!). I had already done the 6 months supervised diet, so my whole journey is about a year. Really, it's no big deal in the great scheme of things. I've used this time to continue to make healthy changes and lose s little more weight. I'd save that money and take your wife on a nice vacation!!

Hi!

I just wanted to introduce myself. I had the surgery on June 3rd and am going in for my first fill tomorrow! So far everything has been going well, but I feel a bit in the dark as to what I should be experiencing so decided it would be a good idea to join a support group. The morning of the surgery I weighed 233 lbs. and so far (according to my scale) I'm down to 216. The surgery itself went really well (performed in Germany by Prof. Weiner), and I had lost 10 lbs. before I left the hospital. They didn't offer any supplements from the doctor here, just instructed me to follow a liquid diet for the next 5 weeks until my appointment for the first fill. So, I've been eating a lot of cream of potato Soup (only thing I seem to have a taste for). I didn't have any appetite at all for the first 2 weeks, but then suddenly I was ravenous. I've always been a bit of a calorie counter and it's a hard habit to break. I realized that the first two weeks I was eating less than 300 cals/day. The next week I ate around 500 calories, but felt like I was constantly starving. I pushed the calories up to about 700, but started gaining weight so tried to start doing a little more intense exercise. Still gained weight, which seems so crazy on just 700 cals/day! Talked to some nutritionists who recommended I go to 1,000 cals/day, counter-intuitive I know, but I figured it couldn't hurt to try so I did and wow...suddenly the weight just started coming off. I weighed myself every day for a week and was losing about .5 lb/every two days. I'm sure this is just like any other form of diet control where everyone has to find what works for them, but I thought I'd share what's working for me. Hopefully all will go well at my appointment tomorrow, but I'm a bit nervous as to how I will feel with the fill and also whether or not I'm going to go crazy once I start eating real food again. I hope I find the support I'm looking for here! Katie
6. I told some people at work that I am having VSG. Was that a mistake??? I see a lot of people say they didn't tell their co-workers or employers what they were having. I only told a select few but gossip in my office spreads like wild fire!!!! I started not to tell anyone but I am really close with some co-workers and some others over heard. I ended up telling my manager because she was expecting me to leave my job at the end of March due to me completing nursing school, but since I have insurance now, I am holding off seeking a nursing position. My job is in the medical field and I have had a few co-workers who had weight loss surgery so no one really looks at having surgery as a "bad thing" and they are not judgmental, not to my face anyway.

Bcbs Federal Nj

I had to fill out a sheet of my previous weight loss attempts. I don't remember now if that was just for the surgeon's office or if that went to BCBS. I wrote down every stupid diet I'd ever been on....low carb, low fat, weight watchers (more times than I could count), etc. Also, there were notes in my primary care physicians file that my weight had been a topic on numerous visits. My BMI was just under 40 but I had high blood pressure, high blood sugar and high cholesterol. I'm on BCBS Federal in Montana and they approved my surgery.

Surgery in one month...

You will do fine, just hang in there. To answer some questions, it depends on you, everyone is a little different. I had surgery on a Thursday was ready to be released on Saturday, stayed until Sunday to have a day off IV and get used to drinking Water. On Monday I was driving and felt fine. I worked part time the first week and full time second week but I do have my own business and had need. Only pain post surgery was sleeping prone. I had to sleep in recliner for a week until I could stretch out flat on a bed due to staples being pulled from being stretched out on a bed. I got back to gym at week three. First week rough could only walk at first for 15 minutes, got back up to running 30 minutes by third week of being back to training and was adding weight/resistance training. I use a personal trainer. From week three to week 5 of exercise I sweated a lot in part due to rapid weight loss, insufficient calories and reduce carbs. Week 6 I stabilized weight loss, increased carbs before working out and sweating reduced to normal levels for a one hour workout, even sweated less than before surgery. This puts me at week 8 postop and I feel great. Don't know if my hair loss has increased, it seems I lost a little but not much. I believe one of the B Vitamins help with hair loss. There are several ways of dealing with it so don't let it worry you. Good luck with the surgery and enjoy the new healthier you.

alcohol sugar?

Cathy, Did you have resolution of your Diabetes? I, too am a Type II Diabetic. My sugars are very controlled since surgery 10 days ago without medicine but I know once I'm on solids they'll hike back up. I'm hoping with significant weight loss they'll go back down. Did they with you?
10. If you dont take your vitamins can it cause you to eat more cause your not getting in enough nutrients? Willl that cause you to gain weight back?

Fit to fat to fit

The episode from this week with the blond female trainer was really quite aggravating. She did not seem to gain much compassion at all from the experiment, she just seemed to care and focus more on herself then her client.
12. My first question is Fibromialgia even a comorbidity? Drrr... sort of frustrated because I've put on a lot of weight this past few years and now I'm older my joints are hurting. Doesn't seem hard for me to put two and two together. Fat=achy joints. Okay, so I told my primary (this is the 3rd time I've seen her within a year and told her this) joints were hurting. They are, ankles, knees, and some pain in my lower back specifically when I try to exercise or am overly active. I got a call about my bloodwork and while I do have some indicators that I have inflammation BUT she feels I may have Fibromialgia. I researched it and from what I read I don't feel I have even close to the symptoms most suffer from with Fibromalgia. I will let the specialist make the decision ultimately. Weird...random thing I have to worry about now.
13. Hi everyone, First post here, located in Canberra, Australia. I go in for surgery on 15 September, so about 6 weeks out. Currently 172cm and 160kg (which I think converts to 5'7" and 352lbs). Half excited/half scared. I've lost a lot weight before but then put it all back on once I dropped off the food plan. At 42 years old and with two young sons I decided I needed to take full control of my weight and take what is really my final chance to get healthy and be there for my family. Not sure what else to put so, "hi" and happy to answer questions etc.
14. Sounds like the same thing my Mom had to do. Maintain and not loose. She lost a bit and her nut advised to to be careful because she could work herself out of the surgery.! so she watched her weight and was careful not to loose .
15. WOW, I'm really sorry too that this happened to you. I'm thankful that my closest friends are very supportive, my sister on the other hand is very backward thinking and doesn't research or read about anything so she is really ignorant about the subject, I've not told her that I have a consult in a few weeks, but when I brought up the idea to her, she went off. "You are not fat enough to have that surgery" WHAT? It's not a matter of being "fat" enough its a matter of being extremely unhealthy and having diseases that can kill us and the damage the extra weight is doing to our bodies. You are doing what's right for you:) Keep your chin up you don't need friends like that! We are here for you. Good Luck
16. You may have something stuck and be "slime-ing". "Slime-ing" is when food gets stuck in the stoma and you automatically start slowly spitting up slimy saliva. I heard that warm/hot water helps open up your band and cold stuff can tighten it. I would get some hot tea or coffee right away and immediately call your doctor. Especially if you think the band may have slipped. You may chew properly, but if you have chugged water instead of sipped, it can be hard on the band too.
Created by MyFitnessPal - Nutrition Facts For Foods

17. The start of my journey began about two years ago. I started having bad stomach issue where they pain was getting bad. At frist the doctor thought it was my meds. Then they thought it was milk and other foods. Then moved on to stress and work related. I know none of them will admit it but I believe some even thought I was making it up. Very time I ate no matter what I ate I was in pain. I went in for a test where they have the machine watch me eat an egg sandwich. My egg sandwich did not move at all from my stomach. After four hours the guy giving the test sent me home and send it is not going any where. So then I was told that I have Gastroparesis really bad. They sent me to doctor Duperier in San Antonio hoping he would do the gastrectomy (which is just like the by-pass surgery). He gave me two choices which were I could have a machine put into my stomach every time I eat I get to push a button that would send an electric shock to my stomach or I could do the gastrectomy. Well at that first appointment he could not get over that I had a BMI of 65 and that I was under 35 years old. He told me that I need to loose weight and get off my pain meds. I had to say that eatting was never a problem for me. Once the pain hit take a pain pill eat as much and whatever I wanted then go to bed. Made life boring however I could do something good. Doctor Duperier said that a lot of people who have gastroparesis were unable to eat. I felt really bad for those people because that means they did not have has good of pain pills has I did. So I got with Jodi (Doctor Duperier's Dietitain) and went over my diet and portion control. I also had to stop the pain meds which was harder than the diet and portion control but in the long run help with it because when I was in so much pain I could not eat. I lose right around 40 pounds before surgery and drop my BMI to 55. I did have surgery on October 15, 2012. So far so good. just welcoming soft protien food into my diet now. The only problem I have is I need to burp and can't. I am walking every day. I am almost will to try again to have a good burp. I think that if I could make the walls shake I would cry out in pure joy. So I joy RNY to meet different people and get idea for issues as they come up. I would love to get any ideas on how to burp and/or anyone else who did the surgery for gastroparesis. Thanks, Cheryl

Impossible???

Yessssssssssssss!!!! It is VERY Possible!! As Tiff said I have lost 172 pounds in a year. I am not at "goal".. which is 160. I got to figureing out that I lost 191 pounds from my highest weight of 373... but I use my "day of surgery" weight of 354. I NEVER dreamed I would have lost that much weight... I just knew I had to do something. And it turned out to be the BEST thing I have ever done for myself!! So yes....... it is very obtainable!!

Am I out of Luck?

We are changing our insurance over to my husband's plan on 7/1/07. Of coarse my first fear is denial because we will have just gotten the insurance into affect, then I remembered out of habit ( I always lie about my weight) I lied about my weight on the forms we filled out because I was afraid my husband would look at them on his way to work. Anyway I knocked off about 25 or so lbs. Have I completely messed up my chances w/insurance?
20. I have cardiomyopathy from rhematic fever (heart damage) and pregnancy related heart failure. They told me that I probably wouldn't live through another pregnancy. Your heart becomes enlarged when you have cardiomyopathy and it has to work harder to carry all your excess weight. I was told that the cardiomyopathy won't necessarily kill me (unless I got pregnant) but I will die with it. I was terribly worried about my heart condition during surgery even though the cardiologist said I would be fine. My heart condition has improved since my diagnosis 10 years ago and I am counting on it improving as I lose weight and become more active. I've never heard of cardiomyopathy being stress induced. I know stress can worsen the condition. I wish you luck and hope your condition improves!
21. Well, both my surgeon and the cardiologist think this was a freak incident. I have get cardiac clearance, but my surgeon is confident that I won't have any problems. I go back in a month for a check up with the cardiologist and she thinks I will be 100% at that time since there was no permanent damage. In the meantime, I'm trying to eat healthy and not gain weight.
22. I have completed all of my pre-approval testing as of last week (Mamo, pap, ultrasound on liver and gallbladder, echocardiogram, nutritional class 1, psych eval, visit with cardiologist) and got flying colors on all of them. I also have a statement from my orthopedic guy that I need to lose 100 pounds before I can have my knee replacement (we are all hoping losing the weight will mean I won't have to have the knee replacement for a much longer period of time). Now waiting for the insurance company to do their thing (Tricare Prime) and approve the RnY surgery (apparently the only bariatric surgery they cover). I was hoping for the surgery in mid to late October, but we may not have the insurance okay until then, then we have to schedule the surgery, so I'm hoping early November. I have a large and important event scheduled at work the week of Thanksgiving and must be back to work before then. Surgeon has me starting a pre-op diet now to get used to what the post-op diet will be like (primarily Protein with veggies). We live too far from a gym (and it's too expensive anyway), so hubby and I are going for a home fitness gym and I have nine acres property I can walk everyday (as well as miles of country road). I've been caffeine free for three weeks, sugar and alcohol free for two weeks, bubbly diet soda free for three weeks... working on learning to chew.... having time to practice the new habits and give up the bad ones is good, but not sure how long I can really hold out with out the help of the surgery. I'm worried the insurance people are going to drag their feet or worse yet, deny me. I started out 120 pounds over my ideal weight of 128. I've lost a couple of pounds in the last week thanks to the Post-op diet (but feel like I'm starving and craving sugar something fierce). Surgeon tells me I have no worries about being approved even though I am healthy despite my weight. My weight alone should be enough she says. Any experience with Tricare Prime?
23. Oh for crying out loud, I love my band! Whatever weight loss surgery you get, the main thing is you are choosing your own health and happiness. You are showing up for yourself. Way to go! And keep us posted as things unfold. Wild! PS I had a two week liquid pre-op -- loved it that FOR ONCE every pound lost was one I wouldn't be seeing again. True that.

Anyone banded around 11/26/2012? I am 33 year old and my pre weight was 250 and my current weight is 236. I have 5 cc in my band and can't stop thinking I should be doing better? Any opinions welcomed.

You will not get instant results and I learned that early on. Then I realized slow is the best way because any other nurse I worked with that had gastric bypass and NOT lap band lost fast and has gained it all back. So relax and it will happen. Remind yourself of your rules...eat slower 30 min, small bites chew well...this a life change not weight loss sprint. By the way I was banded 4/2012 and as of today I have lost 51 lbs so for 4months out you are doing well. The numbers going down is always good!!
