    Calorie count

i am 6 months out and my nutrionist told me that i should be eating 1500 calories a day ( according to my metabolism test which showed that i have a fast metabolism and if i keep my calories between 1567 and 1987 calories i will lose) ive been trying to keep track of my calories but sometimes its hard to. somedays i know that i am eating good and my calories are probably in range but im still not losing. i exercise 5 days a week also. my goal starting tomorrow is to go back to the basics as much as i can. more protein and less carbs. when i first had surgery i ate 1200 calories a day and exercised 1/2 an hour three times a week and would lose 6 pounds. now that i am exercising for 45 min 5 days a week im not budging at all. it sounds like a no brainer to go back and eating 1200 calories a day but thats hard once you get used to eating just about anything. andrea
  3. I went to see my dietician today 2 weeks post op. I've followed the food plan to the ounce and was so proud of myself. She added up a days "food" (drink) and said I was up to almost 700 calories, and really should only be at about 500 at this point. Since I only had what the plan says, I was shocked. Also shocked at her statement. I know enough about calories to know that the bare minimum is supposed to be 1000. I'm not sedentary, I've been walking and active since the day I came home, was back to work at 1 week, back on the treadmill after 3 days. It seems to me that there should not be a set amount of calories "for this stage" as some people are not as active as me. She suggested lower calorie protein shakes, which I went along with, but after thinking about it, I am going to listen to my own body. I feel great. I see no reason to cut my calorie intake by such a big percentage. Did anyone else have such an experience with a dietician? I'm not big on counting calories at this point myself, just following their menu and food lists and portion sizes. I'm sugar free, fat free, and never consume more then 1/4 cup total. I get in all my protein, and have lost 3 pounds since surgery day, and I've been told not to even worry about that at this point (though she pointed it out as in "well, you DID lose a couple of pounds, but...") I have to say I was just shocked at the whole visit. How can I be critisized for following their plan? And how can 700 calories a day for someone who works 8 hours, does housework and exercises every day be too much? I'm just curious, though, if any of you have another take on this. I am open minded, I actually CAN cut calories if the consensus is that I should.
  4. Hi MoRan I had a sensation a few days out from my banding where it felt like I had a 'lump' in my throat; it was extemely annoying and I couldn't stop fixating on it. It came to the point where I rang my surgeon in a hysterical state and insisted that I needed to see him. His advice was that it is a sensation that some (but not all) people get and that it will generally subside with time; the fact that I was getting liquids down indicated to him that he did not believe there was a physical obtruction and it was potentially caused by some swelling. He asked me if I could be brave and tough it out a little longer to see how it went, I did this and it eventually went away - took about a week. Hang in there, and if you're really worried, call your surgeon - that's why they're earning the big bucks!

  6. In my opinion (LOL--not a doctor or nutritionist!), if you're going to have fruit, have the fruit, not just the juice. Juice is concentrated sugar, and yes, it has Vitamins and minerals, especially if you're having it fresh, but it will slide down with no added fiber--you get the calories without getting the "full" factor. And watermelon doesn't have a ton of calories, but watermelon JUICE sure does--almost pure sugar. And I'm saying all this with regret, since I, too, love watermelon. I ate small cubes of it this past summer and enjoyed it a lot. I would stay away from just the juice, though, of watermelon or really any fruit, just because I think it's smart to get that sugar along with some Fiber and bulk to avoid overdoing. Now, if you were to take your watermelon juice and dilute it with some Water, okay, that I can see, but again, if you just love the sweet flavor of the melon, that won't cut it after a while, and I think I personally would gradually be lowering the water content in order to taste more of the juice (I know my tastebuds!!). Just eat some fruit! I have enjoyed juicy fruits like melon and citrus from around 3 months out. In fact, that sounds good right about now--grapefruit, here I come!
  7. Hi everyone, I am new to this site. I was banded on 12/22/03 and I have lost 28lbs so far. I was banded by Dr. Bauman in Concord, NC. I had my first fill on March 6, 2004. My question is, I have not lost any weight in about 4 weeks. I am eating the right foods. I guess I am not exercising the way I should be. I am drinking enough Water. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get motivated again. Also, do we have a page for receipes and snack foods. I love everyones input and look forward to hearing from you. Barbara

OP, what do you consider to be long distance running? Are my 3 miles long or short? Do you alternate Xfit and run days, do them both every day, what?

Had my one week checkup today!

I wasn't really hungry at all the first two weeks. But now, on week three I'm more hungry, and food goes down rather easily. I'm on the mushy food phase now. I'm finding that if I eat Protein first I don't get as hungry. I'm thinking of making some egg salad today, or perhaps some turkey pate (turkey and a little mayo and spices blended), since I have so much of it. I'm also steering clear of caloric liquids. I'm really into sugar free tang right now. I like iced tea also, and splenda goes very well into tea. I won't get a fill til the end of January (which seems like for freakin' ever!) because my doc is so booked with fills. So I have to devise some kind of eating method to get me over the long haul til then. I'm here with ya!!! Linda Dr. Bonanni banded 11/14/03 260/243/150

Had my one week checkup today!

Zhanna, yes it is normal to not feel restriction once the swelling from surgery goes down. Remember the mantra - the first 6 weeks are about HEALING, not losing. Any weight lost in the first 6 weeks is a bonus, not an expectation. The true journey begins once you start getting fills. It is true that some people are tight enough with an empty band to lose, but they are the exception, not the rule. Don't think about weight loss until you're ready for your first fill, usually about 6 weeks out at the earliest. Eat healthy as much as you can, practice your chewing, don't drink with meals, don't drink sooner than 30 minutes after a meal. Practice, practice, practice. Then you'll be ready when you get restriction with your fills.
  11. Ok, so I am choosing to start my pre-op diet 1 week early not because i wanna lose lbs but i want to really jump start my liver reduction to limit any surgical problems. As of today i have 2 days left to indulge myself and eat all the goodies that i want cuz come monday it's on! Has anyone else done this or am i the only one?

  13. hi,after my last fill 3 weeks ago,i had the same problem (even posted it on here, asking for help myself),was very scary especially when i couldnt even hold down fluids but it did eventually loosen up.By the second day i was able to drink fluids, not in big gulps but in small frequent sips, and if that fails you could try sucking on ice blocks or icypoles,or even a wet face washer if you dont want to get an unfill, like i didnt. i will say though, after 3 weeks i am still having problems eating which really frustrates me,especially when im hungry, and i am having my hair falling out and bruising which i know is not good, but i am being able to keep small amounts down now.unlike when i first got the fill. I have got 6.2 in my band now and have heaps of restriction. Im not saying this is the way to go,but its the way i chose and all the best to you.

My roommate and I went to Disney last year and she was on her 2 week pre-surgery diet. Those folks at Disney went above and beyond to accomodate her needs! One place made a chicken broth from scratch for her while we waited. They sure know how to make you feel like they care! They even have a special phone number to call if you are planning on visiting so that they can accomodate your needs at virtually any restaurant.

    Dating after Lap Band

Hello Everyone! I have a couple of questions about dating life, after/during the band (and weight loss): 1.) Do you tell your date (probably not on the 1st date) about your band? 2.) Have you ever had a bad response from a date to the lap band (not interested after finding out)? 3.) Sorry if this one is too X-rated, but does the port get in the way during sex (uncomfortable?, feel the port?)? I'm being banded on 7/24/08 and I've been thinking of many questions! Thanks all!

  20. Mystery of all mysteries... I just ran a report for the last week of my recorded data from my Link. Calculating my calorie deficits for the last week, I should have lost 3.53 pounds over the last 7 days, and you know, my measured loss was 3.6 pounds. I love it when my body does what I tell it to! And I particularly love it when my gadgets are accurate! (This has not been a paid presentation for the Bodymedia Fit Link... I promise!)
  21. I am 2 weeks out and every time I get on the scale the number is lower. Once or twice it's been the same, but never HIGHER! When has that ever happened in my life? Nearly never! What a wonderful Christmas miracle that has been made available to all of us so we can get started on a losing journey! I already barely remember the pain and discomfort and am now just looking forward to being cleared to work out. I never could have done this on my own and I'm just so grateful!!!!!!!!!!!

    Any Type 2 diabetics

Sharon, I am a Type 2 diabetic - been on oral meds for 20 years or so - had been on 3 kinds at a time for the 2-3 yrs before wls. After being banded, I checked my sugar more regularly than I had been and watched it go down, down, down. I gradually cut back on my pills and within 3 mo. I was taking none at all. I am 16 mo. out from surgery, my sugar runs about 110 most of the time. But I am very compliant, I eat no sweets, no white carbs. Most of the people I know have had the same experience. I hope it works as well for you. Best wishes!!
  24. I'm excited to get my second fill this afternoon. But, I'm feeling a little anxious about it as well. My weight loss has stalled a bit - i'm ready to begin the journey of losing this weight in earnest. But, I also like having my band that restricts the food intake without the terrible side affects - pbs, getting stuck, etc. Fortunately, I haven't experienced any of these things yet but I'm afraid that this second fill may actually take me to the next level where I'll really have to confront my food issues and slow down my eating. While I know the benefit will be weight loss, the fear of losing normalcy in my life is taking over a bit right now.

    recipe book?

My nutritionist recommended "Eating Well after Weight loss Surgery" by Patt Levine & Michele Bontempo-Saray. I really like it - recipes are tasty and show exactly what you should eat for each procedure (RNY, Sleeve etc) and for each week post-op.
