    Weekend Weight Loss

I eat more or less the same during the week as I do on the weekends. I just get less sleep during the week. (Roughly 6 hours a night on weeknights vs 8-10 on the weekend)

    July 2019

All is well! I have been able to keep down several soups (non chunky) and protein shakes and fluids. No pain anymore. I have my 2 week post op appt on Monday. I am currently down 19 lbs since surgery. I am at a two day stall, so I told myself I will not look at the scale again until Monday and am only going to weigh myself once a week. I hear the stall is normal, but ya'll know how fun it is seeing the lbs come off and then when it suddenly stops it sucks. Non-scale victory. I put on jean shorts easily that i wasnt even able to get up over my hips at the beginning of summer! YAY

    What was your moment?

Last time I thought about it, you needed a BMI of 40 and I was "only" 38. Also, the lap band was all the rage and I didn't like the sound of that. Fast Forward about 10 years and I was struggling as a member of TOPS (Taking Off Pounds Sensibly - just accountability and support, you do your own diet), and one of the group members, who was 80lbs more than me, announced that she was getting the gastric bypass and I thought "good for her". My mother, also a member with just a 20-lb post-menopausal weight issue, asked if I'd ever considered it. I thought about my 28-year struggle, how I'd lose 15 and gain 20, lose 30 and gain 40, etc...and thought of those adages, "If you keep doing what you've always done, you'll keep getting what you always got" and "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result". Well I didn't see the point in waiting until I was 300+ lbs, and that's where I was heading...plus my 49th birthday was just 2 weeks away...I was very clear in my choice. In the 10-week interim between the decision and the surgery, there were countless reinforcement moments that I was doing the right thing. My 5yo niece pointing at an old picture of me at 160 and saying she wanted me to look like that. A 9hr flight to London on British Airways, notorious for their narrow seats. Having a nasty drunk homelessman in England shout "Hey you, Fat C***!" to my face. Walking a whole mile out of necessity for the first time in years and wishing melodramatically for the sweet embrace of death (in my defense, the walk was very up-hilly). Getting my third round of cortisone injections in my knees and finding they weren't doing a great job anymore.
  4. It's so interesting how people are different. @KarenLR75, I have Tramadol for a bad back and without it, I might have had to quit my (desk) job. I take 100 mg with 10 mg of Cyclobenzaprine.

    Pounds lost

I have had my surgery in mid April 2019 and I am 55 pounds (or 25kg) down.

  7. Hopeful , Maybe my experience will help give u a realistic expectation . i started my journey at 245lbs in fall of 2018 and was 231 the day of my surgery December 18. I lost about 25 lbs the first 4 weeks and then about 10 -12 lbs the. Next 2 months , so 50lbs in the first 3 months . Weight loss slowed after that but of course it should cuz I was 50lbs lighter ! The first month I probably ate 400-500 calories. A day and got my 10k steps in and did spinning a few times a week . Months 4 and 5 I lost maybe 5lbs a month and now I am losing at a rate of 2 lbs a month . I eat 1000-1200 calories a day and weight 171, am 3 lbs from my goal . 2 lbs a month isn’t much but hey , slow and steady wins the race! I still eat protein first, don’t drink with meals, get my water and exercise in every day and am really loving life . it seemed to happen quickly .. stay focused on the long game .. u can do it ! But I never thought to “experiment”with food until after month 4. I was on a mission . Even so there are things I just will never eat again .

    Conversion to bypass

I’m sorry for the long rant but I want you to see the full picture: sleeve vs. sleeve + behavior modification/commitment. You’re 2 weeks out. Don’t be so hard on yourself or doubt your decision. What is done is done. No regrets. This could be the beginning of an amazing healthy future. No looking back now — only ahead... Here we go: I am 7 years post sleeve and I’ve regained all of my weight back and some. Highest weight before sleeve was 210, Surgery day weight was 193 (done in Mexico). I got down to 147 and maintained that for about 2 years and then started regaining. I’m 214 now. According to my current U.S. surgeon (Dr. Stanley Klein), my Mexico surgeon (Dr. Ariel Ortiz) completely blotched my sleeve in 30 minutes (surgery report information) making it look like an hourglass instead of a banana. BUT, I regained not because of my “bad” sleeve but because I changed my eating habits. I have A LOT of restriction still, more than a friend who’s 4 years out. I also became very anemic which caused me to pass out and get into an accident in 2014. I’m terrible about taking my Vitamins, so that’s also not my sleeve’s fault. I then received multiple infusions over the years, had my esophagus dilated twice because I wasn’t eating enough (mostly GERD pain related) and developed a grazing eating style (probably the biggest contributor to why I regained). Having GERD since day 1 (couldn’t keep any liquids down/stayed on IV till I was literally kicked out - started putting my stuff outside - to get room ready for next patient), a hiatal hernia and two ulcers, I am now revising to the RNY (surgery date TBD 8/1/19). My malabsorption/malnutrition is because I don’t take any vitamins. I’ve become “nutritionally crippled” as my surgeon put it which makes my body crave carbs for immediate conversion to energy. It’s literally biologically driven at this point and he told me not to blame myself for the regain — he’s so nice but I do blame myself because I got myself here! Due to the malnutrition, I’ve developed some metabolically induced issues: thyroid problem, autoimmune problem, multiple infections that antibiotics do nothing for (or maybe I’ve become prone to the antibiotics) and lately, small Fiber neuropathy (worst feet tingling and burning ever). I’ve now started going to CBT and support groups that are super informative and fun. Last time they had a practical activity for us at the end where we pretended to be at a restaurant, were given real menus and we discussed why some choices are good and why some are not so good — keywords to lookout for, etc. I’m considering pushing my surgery date as far out as possible to be better prepared through these new resources. I realize the problem is not my sleeve. The problem is my head — my food abuse issues, my food addiction issues, my head hunger, my emotional eating... The list of “synonyms” goes on! But in essence, all of us are here because we have these issues plus obesity/genetically related comorbidities or else, we would have not resorted to surgically modifying our anatomy. We need to fix our relationship with food if our surgeries are ever going to help us, and that’s why I’m trying to work on that more than anything this time especially because I didn’t have any pre or post care before. I’d love to get rid of my GERD and the other problems but I’d really hate to fail at losing weight, again. Not out of vanity but just to prove to myself that I can triumph over years of using food to feed disease instead of health. Summary and awesome thing to keep in mind: “You get out of it what you put into it.” Thank you @Macy6! I love that... Great motto! Take this opportunity to change your relationship with food. You are in the “honeymoon phase” where your body is not ready to accept food (it’s all head hunger), so use this time wisely to identify your emotions and cravings, knowing you can’t act on them now with your healing stomach. Later, this will really help you... when you can map your behaviors to their origin in thought (triggers) and stop the unwanted behavior right in its tracks! You’re in control! Your taste buds may also change so what you’ve liked before, you may no longer want to eat, so this is also a great opportunity to try new healthy things and learn to like those instead of our old ways that hurt us in the end. I really wish this was helpful. I’m being as transparent as possible to give you vision into what the sleeve is and what it’s not, because I went into this initially thinking the sleeve will stop me from overeating and I’ll always have an accountability buddy, but you can drink and eat your way around any WLS out there and gain weight, not to discount the RNY for the additional malabsorption component... You can do this!! You can use your sleeve to change and become a new person INSIDE (head/habits) out (health/body). I wish you complete healing and all the best for your future.
  10. for the first time in 10 years, i finally breeze by the plus section without even glancing at it. it was so weird in the beginning once i got to "normal" sizes. i felt so unsure that i would fit into "regular" sizes. i started at a size 24 last November and now i am a .... wait for..... SIZE 8. that's 8 sizes down in 8 months and i am still not even at goal weight! when i was 140lbs before, i was a size 12. muscle certainly weighs more than fat! i can't remember the last time i was a size 8!! also... so.many.more.clothing.options. HALLELUJAH.
  11. Here's my list: 1. Buying clothes I actually like and develop my own style instead of just buying what fits. 2. Stop asking for a seat belt extender on a plane. 3. Go on rides to amusement parks again. 4. Go skydiving, play sports, and even go walking without running out of breathe. 5. Stop having to push the table at a booth forward for more room. 6. sleep without a CPAP machine. 7. Comfortably fit into the desks at school. 8. Lose my fear of sitting on plastic and metal foldable chairs. 9. Have more shoes! Its almost impossible for me to find sneakers or any other type of shoe. 10. Not sure if this one will ever change but I want my bf's family to stop judging me based off my looks. I hope they finally see that I'm good enough for him This also applies to my coworkers and future job interviews. 11. Feel confident walking into a room full of people. 12. Get married! My bf wants to get married and has tried to casually ask me about my expectations on my dream proposal. We've been together for a while now but I told him I cant picture myself getting proposed to or even having a wedding while I'm huge. I want to be able to fit into an engagement ring. 13. Like taking pictures. I hate it now and avoid photos constantly 14. Stop avoiding mirrors. 15. Idk if anyone can relate to this one but I want to be that friend that other friends call to go out for a night drinking with. The kind of night where you get dressed up and just have a good time as girls. I have a nice group of friends but I don't get invited much to those kinds of nights because of my weight. I don't blame them. I feel so unfeminine and the feeling is written all over me. I want to be able to go shopping with friends and do girly things with them without having to feel like the fat friend that no one asks advice from on whether something looks cute or not. 16. TO LIVE A LONG AND HEALTHY LIFE!

    ❤JULY 2019 CHALLENGE❤

Day 10 Such a bea-u-ti-ful day today, went to have a patio brunch with a BFF and ended up hanging out there chatting for 3 hours...we already decided to do a same-time-same-place next week (easy) Sleek Arms Challenge: Done (harder) Toned Arms Challenge: Done *I feel like my shoulders are getting firmer! (may just be wishful thinking though...) Coffee Cup: My everyday coffee cups are not very picture worthy, so here's a pic of a cute little Starbucks espresso cup that we hardly ever use instead, lol:

    Weight gain

I had the gastric sleeve done a month ago. I have been a scale slave. I lost about 10 pounds asap!!! Then over a week of nothing. Then the next week 4 pounds. I am 24 pounds down since the surgery. And it's been the same pattern with every pound. My advice to both of us, follow the instructions, take vitamins, get required protien, and stay off the scale! 😋

    February 2019 weight loss buds

Gorgeous Anna! Okay so I’m posting a NSV. Since June 21, I’ve only lost 3.2 pounds, but I’ve lost over 7 inches from various parts on my body, with 1 of those inches leaving my lower abs and 3/4 leaving both my waist and hips. Seriously I’m not sure how it’s even possible to lose that small amount of weight and lose so many inches that I measured twice. Then I realized that I’m fully 10 pounds heavier at my current clothing size than I’ve ever been before. It’s like my body weighs more, but is smaller than it’s been for that weight and I’m thinking it’s all purely body composition.

    Conversion to bypass

9.8% is still pretty high. That's 1 out of 10 patients. If it would be 1 out of 1000 or maybe 1 out of 100 I'd say it's pretty low, but not 1 out of 10.

    So Dramatic...

Wow this thread is a real gem! I’ve laughed for the last 10 minutes. 🤣🤣🤣 I really don’t have much drama, unless you want to call throwing all of your loving family members out of the hospital room about 5 minutes after I got there post-op drama. You see, the surgery schedule got delayed 4 hours due to computer issues and an emergency surgery and then the bariatric floor was full and I didn’t get to my room til 6pm (my surgery had been originally scheduled for 10am that day). I was so freaking pissed when I discovered that they had held all 3 of us in the recovery room, keeping us drugged up for several extra hours and still expected us to have our 64 ounces Water drank by morning rounds at 7am. When I realized what the time on the clock in my room said, I kicked EVERYONE out and was so angry I actually got dressed by myself and started walking and drinking water ASAP Lol, I vaguely remember telling hubs and mom that “they would only be a distraction” and that because of the hospital disorganization I was behind schedule and needed to catch up! I set the timer on my phone to go off every 45 minutes and I would drink, pee, walk, walk, walk some more, drink, and lie back down. Didn’t sleep a wink the entire night and at one time one of the nurses aides had to follow me around (not difficult as I was moving slow.... but moving) to get me in one place so they could check my blood sugar. Every time my nurse came in to measure my intake and output, I would ask if I was ahead of or behind the other 2 surgery people from that day and would crack him up when I fist-pumped upon learning I was progressing the fastest. Oh and because I’m a pharmacist I had down pat the timing of all nausea meds. I was making the poor man rotate through meds every 2 hours so I could walk walk walk and drink drink drink. I managed to get released by 11am, and yes....... I was first out !

    ❤JULY 2019 CHALLENGE❤

I have to hang around and wait for my new fridge to be delivered today. I dislike buying appliances and I hate waiting for deliveries. I have a lot of things I need to get done around the house so I’ll take advantage of this time to get some stuff done that I have been avoiding. I’m going to try and go to that yoga on the terrace again tonight, but there is a 50% chance of rain again so I’ll just wait and see if that works out. I apologize for sounding like Eeyore, I really have nothing to complain about. Easy arm exercises done for the day. 10. Coffee cup picture. I am picky. My sister gave me these Cath Kidston cups. They are the perfect weight, shape and size. I highly recommend them if you are in search of lighter weight pretty cups.
  18. I feel the same way because I did my surgery May 29, 2019 and I literally just lost only 24lbs I was feeling so defeated because no matter I do I'm not losing the weight the way I would like and I'm so constipated all the time. I've tried a candy, popcorn, nuts, fruit, vegetables to see what my body rejects but so far nothing. Everything is going down with ease. I too feel like why did I do this because I'm not getting the same results others did. Then my friend who did the surgery said to me, "my journey is mine and I can't compare it to anyone else's journey." I will say the same to you. Find out what works for you and your new body and do it. There's no way you will revert. You physically can't, because your body is not the same. Sent from my SM-G965U using BariatricPal mobile app

    African American RNY Sisters

Hey I’m having my RNY on 6/18. How did everything go with your surgery & how are you feeling now? It's a looooonnnggg story but ended up getting it June 28th. So....you actually got yours 10 days before me. I'm Day 11 post-op and just had my 1st post-op with my Dietician & the surgeon today :). I'm doing ok...2 of my 5 incisions are pretty much completely healed and the other 3 are healing slow (but healing) and a bit tender. But i'm doing pretty good still....23lbs down as of now. How are you?

    Sleeve or RNY

I can only speak for vsg, asthis is the procedure I had. My recovery was not easy. I had a hard time getting fluids in. I had fluids 2x to help me along my recovery. The pain was just awful for about 10 days, but thank God for the pain medication. I have no hunger like before surgery. I do however get an ache in my stomach, but it doesn't last long and I'm not sure if it's related to hunger. I am 4.5 months post-op and still have a good amount of restriction. I can eat about a cup of food now and can tolerate almost all foods. I however try and eat protein first before vegetables and fruit. I find it can be a slippery slope, because I'm afraid I could probably graze every 3 hours, so I really have to be mindful of what I eat. I'm not sure if this is also true of gastric bypass? I said I would never do gastric bypass, but we will see what the future holds about a possible conversion. My Dr wanted me to do the DS for the best outcome to prevent my diabetes from returning. I'm not sure what the future holds, but I'm losing very slow right now and it concerns me. I hope you make the best choice for yourself! Good luck!

Tomorrow will be my 2wks until surgery and my surgeon said I would be doing a two week diet when I seen him on June 14 when we set up my surgery date. But they never told me what to do or anything for my two wk pre-op diet. I see my surgeon this Friday and by then I'll be 10 days before surgery. Should I call and ask them about it? I don't want them to be strict about the 2wks then push my surgery another week because they didn't rely information they should have... Sent from my SM-G965U using BariatricPal mobile app
