  1. Asking about someone else's WLS and responding by mentioning how much they've gained is a little different than asking about WLS for themselves. If my Mom brought up my eating habits or weight gain - I'd be livid (even if I was asking her about her own surgery). He may be looking for info and considering it - but there's no need to tell him he's fat. He's a grown man - and a registered nurse - I'm quite certain he knows he's gained weight, and eats too much. @@jane13 I wouldn't mention his weight gain. Just lead by example.

    Secret Surgery

I can so relate to you. I am 4ft 11 1/2 in and weigh 187. I feel i have to justify to everyone why i want to do this. I am so sick and tired of everyone telling me i don't need this as i also carry my weight in the right places. A weight gain of 5lbs on me looks the same as a 15lb weight gain on a taller person. Tired of the yo yo. I am telling my job i am going on vacation. Taking 10 days off but it's more like 14 if u include the weekend. Surgery is April 13th. Celebration! Fun Without Fighting Fat and Food!

Sunday, October 11, 2009 Celebration! Fun Without Fighting Fat and Food! Went to 125th Anniversary celebration of Roseland Christian School yesterday. Sang in the gospel choir and led the congregation in a song as an alto in a women's trio. Great speaker, great music. The 5th grade girls did a praise dance that was beautiful. I had to wear a black bottom and bright top for the choir. I wore form fitting low rise charcoal pants and a form fitting sweet-heart necked top. I couldn't believe it fit and I looked good. I had to wear an old strapless bra I never thought I'd fit in again. Then I went straight to my 40th class reunion. Fun in a different sort of way. However, hardly anybody I ever hung out with was there. I was not exactly Miss Popularity back in high school. However, three people I'm friends with on Facebook (though I never hung out with them in high school) did come up and mention how much they enjoy my blog. One of them is having LAP-BAND®® himself in December. His wife had a band which had to be removed and now she has a sleeve. She looked great. Like me, it was only 70 lbs but it was killing her emotionally as well as physically. I did my 2 protein shakes and nothing else so that I could eat normally at the banquet. By which I do not mean I ate the way I used to. But I ate some of everything served that I liked and went ahead and drank punch, water, and coffee while I ate, took tiny bites, and thoroughly enjoyed my food. No weight gain this morning so I must have done well. However, I will walk again today (once it warms up, brrrr) and will really watch my food as well. I'm going to tell the Dr. on my next fill that I want it filled to point where the food squeaks on its way through. I have no desire to ever go back to the old me. Celebration! What fun when you're not fighting fat and food!

    I was denied!

Now I'm scared! At my first weigh in they explained to me that if I gained even 1 pound the insurance would deny me and i would have to start the 4 month process all over again. I am trying to eat right and drink lots of water like they have told me to do but i i got on the scale 2 days before 2nd weigh in and it said i gained 2 pounds! I had to take water pills for 2 days before my appointment so that when i weighed in it said i lost 4 pounds! It's crazy i have become obsessed i know its all water weight because 2 days later my weight was back up 2 pounds. I have 2 more weigh ins and I'm afraid I won't make it. On top of everything else I'm an insulin diabetic on hospital grade concerated insulin that causes massive weight gain and they won't take thatinto cconsideration.

    Having a bad night

I'm staying on top of my meds now. I have oxycodone. It's almost not my stomach as much as my back. I have chronic back pain and haven't taken my normal meds since Weds. I took all my pain meds and was knocked out for maybe an hour. Just so nervous about all of this. Managing these things in the next 3 weeks. I got children's Tylenol but I think it's too sweet and made me sick last night. So I am actually crushing my Tylenol. Gross but the sweet sickly taste isn't making me sick. I got inspired because I am tired of my chronic pain. I use to be an athlete and this weight gain started when I tore my ACL and broke my leg playing co-Ed football. I loved volleyball and softball. I want to inspire my kids to be physically the best they can. Especially my daughter. I want to be around a long time for them and enjoy hiking and sports more. Thanks everyone for your support. I'll probably be knocked out here in about 5 mins. ????

    Keto vs. No Keto

No, I was completely off track. I started eating a lot sweets, breads, pastas....hence, the 40pd weight gain. I've been slapped back into reality and I'm ready to get my butt on track. I'm heading home, I will share more when I get home.
  7. I was sleeved on 10/9 and during the 1st 2 weeks lost 18 lbs. When I went on puréed foods I stalled for 5 days and now I've gained 2 lbs. I started to add unflavored protein powder to my food and wonder if this is the cause. This is so frustrating to go thru all this to not only not lose but to gain so soon. And please don't bother with the "you lost 18 you should be so proud" remarks. Something is amiss with my surgery. I've never read about anyone gaining so soon. I follow the diet and portion and only drink water and 0 cal drinks.
  8. yes that can slow things down a bit. you could be holding Water, with the little weight gain. if you can manage to get more fluids in I think that number will change. The scale has started moving again and I have lost an additional 3 lbs! Down 37 since surgery. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using the BariatricPal App
  9. I was banded right before thanksgiving too, in 09. It went much easier than I thought it would. I was on mushies and knew I had to do the right thing for my band to heal. The next thanksgiving I did ok, ate mashed potatoes and stuffing with my turkey but no pies. Last year, ate whatever I wanted. There is deffinately a progression there lol. I have actually already been thinking about this year the last few days. I have struggled with some weight gain and am finally back to excersise and a low carb diet. My whole family gets together for 4-5 days, including my grandma and uncle from Illinois (I live in Florida). Anway, lots of big meals starting with breakfast. My mom always makes my favorites. I have come up with a plan, one cheat day on Thanksgiving, including a special breakfast. No left overs the rest of the visit. I will bring food that is on my plan. I am going to ask my mom to stick to breakfast items I won't find too hard to resist. I think starting off the day right is a good thing. I will focus on enjoying the company of my family- including 2 nieces and 2 nephews I love playing with. Back to the topic of how to handle these once a week pig outs- why not bring a think or 2 on your plan so you will have band friendly food available. Good luck!
  10. The problem with traditional dieting is that after you've lost weight, your body literally fights you to the death to put it back on. This has been scientifically proven. I'm sure this has something to do with the fact that humans have evolved to survive in a feast and famine environment throughout 99% of our history. Nowadays, the feast never ends. This is a relatively new phenomenon, and our bodies haven't had time to catch up yet from an evolutionary perspective. It's the reason why the lasting success rates of programs like Weight Watchers, etc are incredibly low. I believe the weight gain relapse odds plummet after two years of keeping the weight off. Most people don't have that much willpower. The only program besides surgery that I've seen truly work is Overeaters Anonymous, and that's for the people who truly work it. This generally means meetings multiple times a week, step work with a sponsor, service work, etc. It's a complete psychological and lifestyle change. Give it another shot if you want, but one thing I'd say is to trust your track record rather than your emotions. It sounds like you've been dieting on and off forever. What'll make this time any different? If nothing changes, nothing changes. I don't think anyone here wanted to have surgery. We did it because we were at our wits end. As for the people in your life who're telling you not to do it, ask yourself how much they really know about it. Like I used to, they probably think it's only for people big enough to be on TLC, super drastic, etc. It's really not, and frankly, I don't think anyone really needs a football sized stomach that produces tons of ghrelin in this day in age. It sounds like you've done a lot of research on the matter. You have a well-informed opinion, which means that you can disregard ones that aren't well-informed. A calculus student probably wouldn't take an algebra student seriously if the algebra student looked over his work and told him that it was all wrong. Btw, staying obese is generally far riskier than bariatric surgery. Diabetes, clogged arteries, high blood pressure, etc versus some very minor surgery risks. I don't know what your personal health situation is, so take what I just said with a grain of salt, but if a decent surgeon looks you over and says you're good to go, you're probably good to go.
  11. I recommend logging every that you eat, specifically calories. If you do, then what does it look like comparing the two months? When I get frustrated because of weight gain, for example water weight, I am aware that I can easily fall into the old habit of feeling defeated. Now I look at my calorie intake and determine whether it is real or just water weight. It is a way not only to make sure the weight will continue to come off (or maintenance in my case), but also, keep me sane from self-defeating feelings. and actions that usually follow Like if I am eating 1300 calories according to my journal, week to week, and one day I gain 5 lbs., I know there is no way that the 5 lbs. I gained is fat and it must be water weight. So it gives me guidance, accountability and more importantly, peace of mind.
  12. You mean in the maintenence phase? I feel in moderation and factored into your daily caloric consumption there is no issue having a drink once a week or even once a day if it's not causing you any adverse effects like weight gain or dependence. The losing phase is a bit more challenging because like stated above, drinking can hinder weight loss and rob you of the precious honeymoon period window of time where hunger is low and weight loss is easier. The honeymoon period is also a time where you should be setting up healthier habits in preparation for the maintenence phase, and in my opinion, drinking other than ocassionally doesn't really fit into that equation.

    Weight Gain

I have currently experienced weight gain due to stress eating during a divorce process. I had RNY gastric bypass in 2012. I lost nearly 80 lbs. My highest weight was 280 lbs before surgery and support group. My lowest weight was 176 about 8 months after surgery. I had emergency gallbladder surgery in 2014. I had severe complications with internal bleeding and bile drainage. 5 surgeries were performed in a 2 month period to fix me. Soon after my gallbladder surgery, my husband and I separated. And I started seeing myself decline. Under the advice of my gynecologist, I had my tubes tied to prevent pregnancy. Slowly, I began to become sluggish and lazy, and so did my metabolism. I have gained 28 pounds back, and I am not happy. I blame myself most days. Please provide any information that would help. Sent from my SGH-T399N using the BariatricPal App

    Weight Gain

I am with you on the first 6 months. I lost my maximum weight the first 3-6 months. Then it slowed down when I reached 175 lbs. Then I kept it off, until I had complications with internal bleeding from gallbladder surgery. Then, soon after that, I had my tubes tied and I started to gain. I don't drink carbonated drinks. But, I do drink sweet tea occasionally. I do live in the south, so sweet tea is our choice of refreshment. Lol I am NOT complaining about my surgery at all, it has helped me keep my diabetes under control. My biggest problem right now is carbohydrates. Mostly snacking in between meals. Ive started taking CLA and Fat Burner along with a lean muscle mass supplement. And drinking at least 3 route 44 waters a day from Sonic. Lol hahaha I really love the crushed ice, reminds me of a slushie. I think its a mental thing, the crushed ice makes the Water exciting. My workout schedule needs tweaking. Mostly hit and miss when it comes to the gym. I have been trying to start walking around every day at our local park. And along with the water, and whatnot, I have noticed a significant impact on my bloating and weight gain. Starting to feel light on my feet again. I created a secondary page on Facebook, to use as an journal just between me and my counselor. I can keep up with my meals with posting about my meal with a picture. I need a few buddies on Facebook to keep me motivated though. Barbie Ann

Things that the Dr.'s didn't tell us!!!

With the shoe size, is it just the width or also the length that goes down? I was just complaining to my boyfriend a few months ago that I seem to have gently progressed from size 9-9.5 to size 10 in shoes. I'm 25 and haven't grown vertically since I was 11 or 12, so I speculated that it was due to weight gain. I can barely squeeze my feet into a 9 these days, and only a few years ago I regularly wore size 9s. I'm also not that tall, so size 10 is really large.
  16. Well I havent been on here for a litlle over a week, which is very different for me. I have been visiting everybody over these past two weeks. Since we are in Colorado and everyone in my family is in the east coast. I did go and see my mother who hasnt seen me since the day of my surgery. She says she can tell a difference. Proably more inches than weight to me but I will take any compliment coming my way. My other family has seen a difference also in me. But on to why I am writing. I came home and have gained back 6 pounds!!!!! I dont even know how but I did. I ate different foods (which I havent been eating) but a lot LESS than ever before on any holiday break. I dont know what I did wrong. I hung out, had a great time with family but I do not like this feeling I have right now. I know right before I left I had a lot of problems with my 1st fill which we didnt get to an approaite level til 2 days before I left. Now I am scheduled on wednesday for my 2nd fill and I'm so upset over these 6 pounds I dont know what to do. I know I need a fill because I'm hungry as hell! Will my doctor look down on me because of my weight gain?? I know its not alot but it is discouraging. I guess because I really didnt think I was being all that bad on vacation, but I guess I was. I plan on jumping back on this horse tomorrow, actually right now!! But any words of wisdom from my lapband family would be greatly appreciated. Please somebody give me something????? I'm so worried. I want my weight to reflect how I am living and with this gain it hurts. Did any of you gain weight during the holidays? Because right now I feel very alone. Thanks Dee

    Share your NSVs!

Congratulations to all NSV'ers. My own news in this department is that I have gone a while now without eating at night. This has been a central problem in my life. It has caused me to isolate, lie, and cultivate guilt, anger, frustration and despair. It has blocked me from establishing any substantiol, long lasting spiritual connection. Of course it has also contributed greatly to my continual weight gain over the years. For me the answer has been a spiritual one. I need to feel that I am not alone – that there is an entity out there (and not only out there- all around me) that can help me; that I am accountable to and from whom there are no time-outs and no secrets. When I lie in bed at night, I try to sense God's presence all around me – in the breeze, the blankets wrapped around me, my wife's breathing beside me, even in the shadows on the wall. That, for me, makes me feel safe and keeps me from running away and plugging up my empty spaces with food. I need to keep this connection throughout the day. For me, even though I'm no longer a member of Overeaters Anonymous, this line from the Big Book is key: "We are not cured ... What we really have is a daily reprieve contingent on the maintenance of our spiritual condition." I don't intend to proselytize – this is just what works for me.

    Aetna ***

Hi, I was wondering was the weight gain at your last app. Or during? I have aetna too I weighted over my beginning weight my app this month. I have my final check next month and I will definitely be below my original number. My doc said it was no issue as long as I weight in under the original at the last but I'm still worried.
  19. I am almost 5 years post op VSG (surgery date: 06/2013). I started at 272lbs and was at 268lbs the day of surgery. I was able to get down to 199lbs but I seemed to plateau at 215lbs. I stayed at 215 for about 1- 2 years and then all of a sudden the weight started to come back. Today I have gained about 95% of the weight back and I am not sure why. I went back to the doctor and they did the barium test(?) to see if my stomach stretched and they said it did not. They said it was the same size it was after surgery, the doctor was actually quite impressed by it for some reason. I still eat small portions, so much so that my friends that don't know I had surgery think something is wrong when I don't eat all my food. I've tried a few different things to lose the weight but I can't seem to lose more than 20 lbs and it always comes back. I've considered that there could be something else wrong. I have been symptomatic of Hypothyroidism for years now, however, when my doctor runs blood tests (TSH and Free T4) it comes back normal. My doctor refuses to give me a referral to an endocrinologist (I had hormone problems when I was a kid) or do a full thyroid blood test. I feel like I am out of options and I am not sure what to do. Any advice or words of wisdom are welcome! Thanks!

gained weight since my initial consult

I have just begun the process of my 6 month weight loss visits. I was informed by the surgeons office that the insurance company will not want to see a weight gain and if they do they will probably deny me. I questioned this and they told me because it just proves to them that I cannot follow the recommendations from my doctor and therefore I may not be successful with the lap band. Honestly I made sure I gained 10 lbs. before my first weigh in. My first weigh in was the day after christmas. I felt like this assured me that I should be able to show a loss. I just wonder how much of a loss is ok. I also heard you have to be careful not to lose too much. I think it all depends on your ins. I have BCBS NJ.
  21. I'm not a big juice drinker, I'm a believer in eating the fruit. I dont buy juice because its no better for the kids than soda, full of sugar, high calories, and they tend to guzzle it. so I'm raising them the same way i was raised - skim milk or Water to drink. I've also got ingrained in me the habit of not drinking calories. I would no more ingest a couple of glasses of juice a day than eat a family block of chocolate daily. Fast track to weight gain. I drink water. Its one of those healthy habits lots of fat people have. Calorie wise, you might as well be drinking Coke. Although if you truly dont eat any other fruit, then a glass of juice in the morning is probably a good idea. In case I sound too virtuous and perfect, I wake up and head straight for the coffee, before i can do ANYTHING else.
  22. I was banded on the 17th of Dec.I lost 16 pounds on the liquid diet. But now that I am able to eat soft foods I have gained a 1 1/2 in two days. I am getting nervous. I get hungry but I am sticking to the three meals a day one of them being my protien shake. Once I eat I am full which is a blessing. Any words of advice?
  23. @@Band07 when I told my family I was going to The Dominican Republic for a tummy tuck in 2013 they thought I was crazy. However to this day with weight gain and all I still think it was one of the best decisions I ever made. You just have to keep remembering that this is for you! I'm having surgery on the 25th and couldn't be happier with this decision too!!!

I think you may be in the intial period of the surgery and it takes time to get adjusted to a new lifestyle. Yes you won't be able to binge or have big portion of food like you used to but post-Op your portion sizes do increase. I also have PCOS and have dealt with and even now dealing with it's horrendous side effects. Hirutism, acne, no periods, weight gain, dark patches, skin tags, metabolic syndrome, high BP and HR (but never took meds for it) anxiety, depression you name it and I have/had it. I'll anyday take this surgery over having to deal with plethora of PCOS related symptoms. My acne has gotten better, blood pressure and HR have normalized so far. No periods still. But I am sure as I continue to lose, some of these side effects will minimize. There's no guarantee, but I am sure I am on a better boat post-Op. My cravings and binge eating have also gotten better, which was never the case post tons of diet plans. This surgery is definitely a boon for many. But it takes time, patience, work and sacrificing of certain elements. Like many suggested, try therapist and see that may help or give it couple of months of adjustment. Good luck.
