band to bypass in 10 days!

Taurus Thank you for your kind words!! I'm glad that I could help you. This is exactly what this forum is for, to encourage and support each other. I also have a GREAT SUPPORT GROUP that I am in on Facebook, this one is the very best. If you are interested in joining one let me know. Everyone has feelings like yours. How long did you have your Lap Band? Did you have problems with it? My hubby had his Lap Band for 13 years he only lost 100#'s but he was is a very large man. When he had his Band he weighed 515#'s. He wanted the RNY then but the suregon told him he wasn't strong enough for that one. Which he was a very strong man. He is quite a bit older now also. He went in for a revision to the RNY in Sept of 2013. After his band malfunctioned and he couuldn't even hold down Water. When they got in there the Band had eroded into his liver. So they backed out and told him in 3 months they woyld attempt to do it again. He ended up with abcesses and was deathly sick for 9 months. # of those months he don't even remember at all. So fast forward to June 3, 2016 we went to Mexico (paid cash) to get the RNY well since his problem with the band his whole right side was solid scar tissue so he got thenSleeve done. Now comparing to my RNY and his Sleeve he can eat way more food than I can at 3 years out!! He isn't using his tool very well so he hasn't lost but 60#'s since his surgery. This makes me so sad for him!! He has Cancer on his kidney and there is nothing they can do until he loses 150#'s. Of course he has me pushing him all the time!! So hopefully he will get on the ball and lose some weight!! So again if I can help in any way please feel that you can ask me any ?'s and I will try to give you a fair honest anwser. Take care and keep me in the know!!
  2. As far as noticing changes. Well I must have been wearing some REALLY tight clothes. I was stuffed into a 16 at surgery. Now I am in a 14 comfortably after 35 lbs. I had LapBand before my sleeve so I have boxes of clothes all the way down to size 8. I am trying to just be positive about what I have lost, this being a revision I am losing a lot slower the second time around. This is my LapBand before and after pic. I am holding off till I get to goal weight before I post new sleeve pics
  3. I've used fitday.com (no good phone app, just on laptop) every day since 2009 (lap band surgery was in 09), and I just recently had a sleeve revision. I wish it had a good app, but I like it because it has graphs, pie charts and stats that I love to "study" through the years. I track everything I put in my mouth: Calories, carbs, fats. They have a really good database and I input all the foods I buy at the grocery store. I also put in my exercise, and in my journal there I put in any changes of my day (like if I have a cold, if the dr. changes my meds). It's really an invaluable tool and I find it to be "calming", strange maybe?
  4. I know I answered you in another thread but I might as well answer here too. If anything, just in case someone who has the same questions reads this. My lap band to sleeve revision was done in one step and as outpatient. Checked in at 5 am, surgery was at 7 am, walked at about 11 am, and released at 4 pm the same day.
  5. Recovery was pretty easy except the first 4 hrs. Mouth really dry, had to keep sucking on ice chips, felt like I got ran over by a truck or two lol. I had an outpatient band to sleeve revision, I was there like for 11 hrs. total. I slept all of the 2nd day, and the 3rd day on was a breeze. Stopped pain meds after the 3rd day. I'm on day 18 now.
  6. Hello, My name is Miranda and I'm from NYC. Going to see my surgeon this upcoming Wednesday(at NYU) to discuss getting the VSG done. I had the lap band before but had too many complications so it was removed. Has anyone else had revisional surgery? How long is the hospital stay ? October sleevers?

Jess31581, I don't have a preoperative diet. I am a band to sleeve revision so I am just going to do the same diet I did before i got my band. But my surgeon doesn't require one. Sent from my SM-T350 using the BariatricPal App
  8. I would recommend the MGB for less surgery time and less complications. It has gotten rid of my acid reflux and I am losing weight again. With the sleeve I had easy regain and couldn't pay to lose any of it. I measured food, lifted weights, did cardio and would lose nothing. I am at 203having regained to 239. So I have lost 36 pounds since the start of the revision process. I would be losing more but I have a bad knee that swells and hurts when I exercise. When I get below 200 I will see about getting my knee fixed. It is bone on bone.
  9. I had to have both, but I think my insurance required the endoscopy only because I had a lap band and had to prove there were issues (like gerd or whatever) to prove that the revision is best for me at this stage. I had an upper GI, it showed I had a dilated esophagus (2nd time in 9 years), but it wasn't enough since the doctor can remove the liquid, rest my esophagus for a couple of months, and then put the liquid back in. The sleep study wasn't mandatory by my insurance, I think I had to have it done because my surgeon is ultra careful. I had no history of sleep apnea. Do you have to have a cardiac clearance for surgery? That seemed to be the most important to my surgeon...
  10. A couple of surgeons in your region to look into is Dr. David Greenbaum in NJ snd Dr. Mitchell Roslin in NYC. Both are well regarded in complex revisions such as RNY to DS (there are only a half dozen or so in the country qualified for that one, including Paul Kemmeter up in MI that RJCS197, who posted above, used. Their preference may be to go with the DS as that overall tends to provide better results, but they usually have no problem doing RNY when that is the appropriate solution for the patient (be open minded when dealing with these complex revisions - the bypass may have worked well for you, but your mother may be a better match for another configuration.)
  11. I'm sure you all have heard this question several times. I have researched and talked about it myself. I just want an honest opinion. I originally wanted to get the sleeve, but I did not want to only lose 100lbs. I want to lose more. I'm currently 378, 5'5 and I carry my weight in pretty well places . So my question is..... If I went with the sleeve will I lose weight slower than having gastric bypass? Will the sleeve help me keep my shape? Will the sleeve be better for me because I have NO Health issues besides being overweight? Will I get under 200 lbs with the sleeve? That's based on my current weight. Or have you sleevers been unsatisfied with your results and got a revision? Did you get a revision because of easy weight gain? Not enough weight loss ? I really would like to know. I'm getting closer to surgery and need to get serious here. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    6 month diet requirement

I was self pay for my band in 2009. BCBS PPO here too, and they covered my revision with no 6 month diet. My surgeon had to show complications though, like enlarged esophagus...etc. As far as my hoops, I have a super strict surgeon anyway, and she required more hoops than my insurance hehe. Good luck!
  13. FloraBama - I see it's only been a few months but are you happy with the revision so far? I am going for a sleeve revision Tuesday. Although I lost with the sleeve, I stopped losing way short of goal and am now slowly regaining. I'm torn between MGB and regular bypass. Thoughts? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Nervous to go under the knife AGAIN

So many of us feel the same way. I was banded in 2006 and was scheduled for a revision to the sleeve in May 2016. I woke up bandless and sleeveless due to adhesions. I have a new surgeon who will be doing my sleeve on Oct 2016. I'm so very scared but more scared not to... It's normal...ask as many questions about HIS mortality rate, research online what you can about him and most importantly compliance is key... I told myself the same things I'm saying to you All the best! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    OCTOBER GBs where are you?!?!

@@Ninni, very similar stories. At 4cc's of Fluid, I was vomiting almost everything I ate. So pringles and ice cream is what I lived off of for weeks. I had lost about 40 pounds with the band, but when he had to take all the fluid out when I was having reflux and gallbladder issues, I put on those 40 and 20 more. I currently have 3cc's in it still and prior to my pre-op diet could eat most anything except stringy meat (roast beef/pork chops) and could not eat left overs that had been re-heated in the microwave. I too don't blame the band, however, I should have just went with the bypass the first go around. I noticed a lot of patients here have their revision in two different procedures. I'm having my band removed, hernia (from the band) fixed and bypass all in one. I hope 3 weeks will be enough time off to recover.

My story of screwing up. Support? Ideas?

@@songsmith thank you so much for your response. I'm sorry it took so long for me to come back. I've started my first semester of nursing school and it's been crazy! I went to a counselor a few times who was supposed to specialize in eating disorders, but I think I need a new one. She seems to be a behaviorlist, a therapist who focuses not on feelings or emotions, but observable aspects of behavior. Her advice for me was to keep a food journal and look at myself in the mirror each day and say "I will not eat anything today that I am not supposed to eat even if ISIS attacks my city." That may work for some people, but I weighted 500 pounds not long ago. Just telling myself "No" isn't going to work for me. I'm heading back to my insurance company's list of therapists and trying again. Thank you again. @@mi75 I am so sorry for the loss of your father. That's a horribile thing to go through, and I wish you healing. Thanks for the tip about the regain section. I'll be checking that out. @@mcplu28 thank you! Best of luck to you, too. We can do this. We just have to work each day at it. @@dccarite, I agree with you. Extreme weight gain is a mental disorder. Some weight can be just overeating, but I didn't get to 500 pounds by having a good mental health. I didn't find the therapist for me with my first try, but I'm heading back to the list of therapists for my insurance and trying again. Good luck with your surgery. Keep us informed, ok? @@miamomma YaY for breaking through that stall. That good attitude is going to keep you moving in the right direction. Thank you so much I'm trying daily to Celebrate all the weight I have already lost while moving to lose more! @@Lindairene I don't think there's a single surgery that does that for us! I'm still considering revising to a duodenal switch as I know a few people who've had success with it and it does have the least weight regain of any of the surgeries, but it sure isn't an eat-anything-you-want thing! @@Hollyhock Thank you so much! I really need to keep focusing on how much weight is gone (my sagging belly skin SHOULD serve as a good reminder lol) and just keep moving forward. Do a little better every day. thanks again
  17. I had the Lap-Band surgery June of 2015 and had lost 68 pounds in a year. I didn't drop as fast as I would like (I am sure my personal habits were to blame). No complications with the band other than discomfort, but I realized that I needed a different option so I had the revision surgery to the Sleeve this past 4th of July. A few days after the revision surgery I came home and weighed myself; I gained 3 pounds. I think it was due to the IV Fluid, unless I was right about the Dr. smuggling something in my stomach (I had my surgery in Mexico, lol). However by the third week after surgery, my total loss was 20 pounds. It will come off, don't get discouraged and be aware that in a few more weeks you might hit the stall (which is very common). I had my stall for 3 weeks, although it felt like months. I am back to losing again. Yay! Think positive so you can heal well! Slow or fast, you will be dropping. Best wishes.
  18. My baby girl will be 1 this Friday and I gained 30 baby was 7lbs 7oz but by 1 month postpartum I was down to my pre pregnancy weight. I have since put on 10lbs and I'm in the process of getting my revision approved. I too am at the end of my breastfeeding journey and not by choice either. 19. Band to Sleeve revision on 9/2/16. My program is strict. It was 3 day Clear liquids, then switch to all liquids for next couple of weeks. Seen many programs on the net that they begin puree on day 8th and end that stage on the 21st day. Creamed Soups help as they are pretty comforting and filling. Campbells Soup to go has no bumps or lumps, for example. I know I get head hunger a lot though. Also, one of the nurses told me that a healing stomach will often mimic hunger, that makes sense and also when our stomach produces more acid it mimics hunger too.

    OCTOBER GBs where are you?!?!

I'm a band revision to bypass on 10/5/16. I have three weeks of pre-op diet (4 shakes a day with raw veggies to snack). I'm on day 4 of no real food (I'm not a big veggie fan) and it's rough. I almost had a major breakdown last night as I wanted a piece of meat so bad. I had to settle for some cabbage, mushrooms and peppers. Wishing you guys the best over the next couple of weeks! It will be tough, but we have to stay focused on the prize. Tammy

    A New World

Gerd is definetely a commorbitity and you may find that the VSG may not be the right surgery if you already have it. The sleeve can make that condition much worse resulting in a revision to bypass down the road. I ended up having RNY gastric bypass instead of the sleeve due to Gerd. Bypass cured this disease for me along with sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. It also put my kidney disease into remission. I wish you the best of luck, just follow up with the surgeon on the commorbity and they can help you through it. You would also need to understand the required supervised diet. Many times it is 3 to 6 months and that would mean it would be next year. Once you are through the diet, then it takes some time for the insurance company to approve and then they need to find an open slot on the surgery schedule. So, that being said, it just might take you a little longer to get through it. For me, I had a 6 month supervised diet that began on 12/26 and I had surgery on 9/29....nearly 9 months.
  23. I was Sleeved 12 Sep, feeling good, have another day to go before soft foods, can't wait to chew it (small curd of course). I'm a revision, had Lap band, the port flipped, no more constriction I was uncomfortable, had to lift bra to be comfortable, have lost 15 lbs since two weeks before surgery, if you are constipated try a Fleet supository. 6 month diet requirement

Hello, I am in the same situation. I have Highmark Blue Shield and they have a policy for new procedures and one for revisions (I will post the revision policy) so I'm wondering if I will be required to do the 6 month diet again. I did it back in 2010 with my lap band but that was through Capital Blue Cross. I can't wait to get the band out, every day is a struggle with it! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
