You know, im thinking back now to when i first was nearing goal and I remember i too got a bit concerned about having to increase calories to stop the weight loss (i tried to find my original post but no luck). I did not think it would be possible. Then i also remember a few members further out than me telling me “don’t worry, it’ll happen”. And yep, they were right. So i get the bit of panic. i/we are/were in a diet groove of sorts and changing that up does of course bring about a bit of uncertainty and with that maybe some panic/anxiety. its easy for me to say now, looking back, to just trust yourself that you can navigate through the inevitable changes, but im saying so in hindsight, with the benefit of actually having gone though it already. In any case, good luck, vent away, voice your fears, broadcast your successes, and try if you can to know you aren’t alone in feeling this way. ❤️
  2. HW - 237 LW - 137 (this was also my goal weight) CW - 155 I hit my goal weight 8 months after surgery (November 2019) but, by about 13 months out I was up to 150 pounds, and have been maintaining my weight in the 150’s ever since. I have maintained my weight here for two years and am comfortable, but still long to lose the 20 pounds I regained, and STILL fear gaining back all of the weight.

I had a similar conversation with my surgeon (but about my continued weight loss) & my response was the same: I can only eat what I can physically eat. I added snacks up to 5 a day & yes I felt like I was eating all day long. I still made pretty careful choices & added complex carbs & some more fat. Choosing from: cheese, humus or liverwurst & multigrain crackers, protein bar, yoghurt, fruit, roasted fava or chick peas, chia pudding, nuts, etc. I also use non diet salad dressings, full fat milk, add seeds & beans to meals. I don’t do sweet or breads, pasta, etc. & cook most of what I eat myself. I don’t drink shakes or need multi vitamins. Sometimes small change or swap in food choices can make big differences. I can only eat 1.5 eggs (approx 10g protein & 235 calories) but I can usually eat a full serve of rolled oats cause I keep it liquidy (make on milk, add seeds). approx 15g protein, 380 calories. No empty calories, lots of nutrients. My weight loss stopped when I was consuming about 1300 calories (about 18 months after surgery) but I’m not tall, have a smaller frame, am in my mid 50s & not very active. But you're not me & you may need more calories. You have to work out how much food your body needs to function effectively at a weight your happy at while living & enjoying your life how you want. It just takes time & some need more than others. Took me a good 2 years to get my portion sizes to about recommended sizes for most things. I still snack but about 3 times a day. Not sure how many calories I eat now as I’ve increased my protein intake a little due to an absorption issue (from gall surgery not sleeve surgery). Just start making small changes, try different things & see how you go & what works for you. It’s the only way.
  5. Hi, I won't be the best one to help you with a "kickstart", so I will leave that to the ones who have way more knowledge and experience than I do. However, I want to let you know that your weight loss, in 8 months, has inspired me. You have lost a tremendous amount, and I'm confident that your children are proud of you. I'm sorry to hear about the family fight. Hopefully, things are on the mend and you can put it behind you. Follow your plan, and re-incorporate your daily walks. You don't have to start at 10K a day. Just make yourself go out there, even if it's just for a few minutes. You have accomplished so much in the past months. Be kind to yourself. We only have one shot at this life. Focus on you. I'm sending you many blessings your way. Tight virtual hug. ♥
  6. Hi Friends, I'm 8 months post RNY. SW 308 lbs, CW 213 lbs. Height 159 cm. I was on a steady losing path until Jan this year due to my walking (10k) daily. However, we had a bad family fight in Jan which has led to me being depressed and lethargic. I've kinda stalled since then and there has been zero progress. I'm scared I'm throwing all this away and fearful since I'm overeating and not losing. Any advice on how to kickstart my weight loss again please. My goal weight is 150 lbs and I really want to do this for my kids. Please help me

  9. This is crazy! Your post is nothing like I’ve read on here haha I love it. You look amazing. I lost a lot of my weight on Keto when I was Yo-yo dieting but did not like the carb restrictions. I think I could do it again you’ve definitely given me something to think about. Congratulations on your long term success with the sleeve.

    Clothes?

Loving this thread! I also have 6 different sizes of clothes - 11 years ago I weighed what I want to weigh long term, although it proved impossible to maintain. So I have been dragging out clothing in smaller sizes as I lose weight. I haven't given any away as yet but I really do need to now (closet space!) I will probably keep my biggest jeans for sentimental reasons but everything else will go to a charity shop. I've had to buy a couple of things there too and it just makes so much sense.

My favorite smoothie is banana and nut butter but it’s too many calories to fit in my weight loss phase. That’s healthy calories if you use nut butter with no sugar or salt added.

I stalled for a long time (several months) and I am within healthy weight range so I figured I was now at maintenance. I stopped weighing myself so often because I’m not obsessed about it…. BUT…. I guess I started losing again because I am at 173 this morning. If I reach 155 that is an unhealthy range for my height. So I am still twenty pounds from an unhealthy range and I have to pick up the calories before I get there and drop below that threshold. (family wise: my moms side of the family tends to be very thin and they usually fall below the norm BMI weight ratio) as far as activity: I don’t go out of my way to exercise but I am very active during the day. I am on my feet all day as a teacher, I go out and play handball/basketball with my students during recess and lunch, constantly walking across our large campus, and rotating the classroom all day as well. I swim and go to the beach with my own kids or hike with them on weekends. I’m definitely not sedentary but I’m not running any 5ks either. My joints are still damaged and I have to be careful. the nurse recommended strength training with resistance bands to help maintain muscle mass. she didn’t tell me NOT to loose more weight, she just told me that I should be looking towards improving my calorie count so my body doesn’t go into starvation mode and messing with my metabolism. i guess I will just have to throw in some snacks and get used to brushing my teeth a zillion times a day. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’ve been looking up higher calorie healthy foods and I’ll try some out next week

Hi I had my gastric bypass 3/16. I am 2 days into my Purée Stage. The liquid stage was easy in the beginning but toward the end it was becoming boring. Your stomach is smaller so liquid phase wasn’t difficult for me as much as boring-I was ready for Stage 2. I was really excited to have some purée food and I started with 8oz of skim milk with 1/2 tablespoon of Hershey’s simply 5 syrup. It was delicious and I am NOT a milk drinker. The milk counted toward my water allotment and honestly that is the MOST difficult part so far. You have drink but stop 1/2 hr before a meal than wait 1/2 hr after your (20 minute meal). There are some factors to consider to eat proper for nourishment and hydration. I lost 11 lbs. in a week so it’s working. YOU will lose weight. How is everyone else doing?

I like to hear it is based on your BMI. My surgeon office approach is the same for all. I am sure there are exceptions and I did lose a lot of weight on my own before doing this so that may be why I wasn't asked to lose any additional weight. My BMI is 53. During our nutrition class, we were even told not to start doing the liquid diet any earlier because you needed to keep up your strength but just to make sure you were eating healthy.

Now thinking if canceling surgery 🥺

Don't over think it, This fear (GERD) drove me to have a melt down right before surgery and to be highly anxious for weeks after surgery. I had reflux before surgery for many years and had been on 20-40 mg of Nexium daily for about 15 years and as my weight got higher so did the occurrence of my reflux to the point of along with the Nexium I was going through a bottle of Gaviscon a week. fast forward 8 months post op I still take 20 mg Nexium daily but only because I am to scared to tapper off as I remember the rebound reflux from prior to surgery when I would try to come off them and I have to be honest I suck a Gaviscon dual tablet if I get the slightest inkling of reflux which I think half the time is in my head lol. So prior to surgery I told my surgeon reflux was my biggest fear as I didn't want a bypass either and I certainly didn't want to have to have a second surgery, He said the weight loss would reduce the reflux and I think he is right. its just my own fears and thinking about it and sometimes eating the wrong things or too much that causes me get reflux now and its pretty mild. Now I am going to say this and I don't mean any offence to anyone as it is just what I have observed, a lot people who have had revision surgery due to GERD/reflux also seem to have had a substantial weight gain too, now if anyone out there has experienced different I stand corrected but that's what I have noticed. So that is a pretty good incentive for me not to regain. Talk to your surgeon though as he/she is the best to advise you we can only share our experiences
  16. some SSRI's cause weight gain, others don't. Paxil (paroxetine) is notorious for weight gain. I think Wellbutrin is one of the better ones in that dept - it doesn't cause many people to gain weight. Not sure about Zoloft - but ask your doctor or pharmacist. If it's one that causes a lot of people to gain weight, maybe your doctor can prescribe a different one. if you need the med, you need the med - but again, there are some that aren't as bad - or bad at all - when it comes to weight gain.
  17. What are you all eating one plus year out and how many calories are you consuming. i had my year evaluation (I went from 330 pounds to 180 pounds) and she was pleased with my progress (apparently I surpassed the others in my group with excess weight lost which is a great feeling!) however she seemed a bit upset over the quantities of food I am eating. she said I should be getting 1,700 calories a day. I just don’t see how that’s possible! My restriction is still very much a thing and I just can’t eat that much. I compromised by telling her I would eat breakfast (I usually just have a nonfat coffee and that fills me up), she told me to introduce that back in and track my calories. So… I did. you guys I am only getting 1,000 calories in a day! And that was WITH breakfast. I have found that I am finally getting hungry on occasion (I haven’t felt hunger for a year now ) and my volume has increased slightly, but nowhere near enough to fit in 1700 calories! My protein count is fine. I got 80 grams of protein today (I have some lingering medical issues so my protein count has to be lower than the norm). I don’t eat junk. This is kind of an average day: scrambled egg, coffee, P3 pack, yogurt (no sugar Greek yogurt), chicken/fish with some veggies (but I usually can’t eat more than a bite or two of veggies) and I might have a few nuts or half a cheese stick for snacks. It will only become more difficult because I am getting Invisalign and my desire to snack is going to be zero because I don’t want to brush my teeth a zillion times a day. i need good ideas on getting my calories up!

    Pre & Post Workout Meals

I remember watching a documentary on obesity (can’t remember its name) & a doctor pointing out that obese people have been weight training 7 days a week for years as they carried around their weight. I was rather surprised but it makes sense when you think about it. The difference is when you do weights at a gym you use different muscle. Plus as you lose weight, your posture improves as your centre of balance changes so you may have to retrain muscles, tendons, etc, too. But in answer to your question: protein. Your body uses protein for recovery & healing, and muscle & bone health & growth. There’s some information about now saying that your body can’t absorb more than 25g of protein at a time & excess is stored as fat. Something to take into consideration. Congrats on your weight loss so far.

    Where’s the weight loss??

IT ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT MATHEMATICALLY MAKE SENSE! I have only been in the July 2021 Gastric Sleeve Thread. I just happened to see this. I am 56, 55 at the time of surgery and my highest weight was 196. To be honest, it was 196 because I binged before the surgery knowing life would change. It's been 7 months now. I have lost 20 pounds. I'm thinking, "there is no way! I'm eating about an eighth of what I used to eat and all I've lost is 20 pounds!" First of all --this was a relief and proof to me that after all these years no amount of dieting or exercising was going to help if even gastric bypass can only give me a 20 pound loss! No, I'm not eating sweets. I've lost my appetite for anything sweet. I absolutely cannot drink anything carbonated, so I drink water and tea sweetened with stevia. I've had enough protein shakes to last me a lifetime. I can only eat about 4 or 5 bites at any meal. So what am I doing wrong? And get this.......the dr put me on Adipex! All I know is, I'm 16 pounds away from my goal. I have no idea if I will get there. The dr called year 1 the "honeymoon" and basically stated that if I'm going to lose, it will be done within year one. He said he doesn't usually see a loss in year two. So, I've got 5 months to lose 16 pounds. If you are thinking you are the only one with this issue --you are not.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

So good to hear about the success. Overall I am good, but I cannot say my diet is the healthiest. I find eating carbs to be way too easy to digest and my sedentary life style working home all day in front of a computer doesn't help. I am depressed that it seems way too easy to eat more food now, such as whole (store-bought) burrito in one sitting, or two pieces of pizza instead of just one, or a fairly large salad. My little egg-sized stomach has definitely stretched. 😞 I also starting drinking Diet Coke in the morning. For three years I didn't touch it, but recently I starting drinking the mini Cokes--only one in the morning--and was surprised there were no repercussions, so that is my indulgence when I start my work day. Unfortunately, the Girl Scout cookies also seem to be digesting all too well. I did undergo a panniculectomy and a breast reduction and feel so much better since I did that. The relentless neck pain from carrying the weight of the breasts and the back ache from the stomach skin pretty much disappeared. My arms and thighs are still scary large and saggy but I just don't think I have the bravery to do another plastic surgery. It was rough! One very upsetting side effect (other than I still have thinning hair) are that I have had four kidney stones since last May. Dr. Google confirmed that there is a correlation between gastric bypass and an increase in kidney stones. They are crippling, and from what I understand, an intake of animal protein is partly to blame. I absolutely need to consciously drink more water so would LOVE to hear y'all's tips and tricks for remembering to drink water!

If your paperwork is already submitted, you’re good to go. If not, I would maintain. My surgeons office originally told me that it would only matter what my first weigh in was but then they corrected themselves bc what really mattered was the weight I was at when I did my testing for cardio, pulmonary, psych and nutrition because it was after that they submitted the packet to the insurance.

I’m one of those people that does have to gain weight prior to surgery as I’ve lost weight since my approval (stress) and don’t have my surgery for another month. Thankfully I only have a 2-day preop diet! I’m self-pay and my surgeon’s office is the one requiring it due to my bmi being at the minimum for surgery.

Usually insurance goes by the weight you’re at when the doctor’s office weighed you at their approval so you’re good if the surgeon’s office isn’t planning on calling you back in for any reason. As long as you’re over the surgeon’s required minimum to do the surgery it won’t matter. I’d call your insurance company to confirm.

    Fleur-de-Lis or Panniculectomy?

This is what my PS told me when I first consulted with her and she's really good at what she does, she's also professor of PS at the local university, so I trusted her advice... she said most women that have lost a lot of weight, like over 100 lbs, usually have saggy skin above the belly button also, so they need a Fleur. If you go with just a "regular" tummy tuck that they do for like a mommy makeover, you will have a tightened lower abdomen, and still be left with saggy skin above the belly button. It will look out of proportion. So she did a Fleur on me. And I'm happy that she did.

I'm doing the same thing - I'm calling it my 'food bucket list' -- favorite foods, favorite restaurants. Here is CIGNA's criteria: Adults Bariatric surgery for the treatment of morbid obesity in an adult (age ≥ 18 years) using a covered procedure outlined below is considered medically necessary when ALL of the following criteria are met: • EITHER of the following:  BMI (Body Mass Index) ≥ 40 kg/m2 (BMI ≥ 37.5 kg/m2 in Asians- when ethnicity is confirmed by provider attestation)  BMI (Body Mass Index) 35–39.9 kg/m2 (BMI 32.5–37.4 kg/m2 in Asians- when ethnicity is confirmed by provider attestation) with at least one clinically significant obesity-related comorbidity, including but not limited to the following: mechanical arthropathy in a weight-bearing joint (symptomatic degenerative joint disease in a weight bearing joint) diabetes mellitus o poorly controlled hypertension (systolic blood pressure at least 140 mm Hg or diastolic blood pressure 90 mm Hg or greater, despite optimal medical management) hyperlipidemia coronary artery disease lower extremity lymphatic or venous obstruction obstructive sleep apnea pulmonary hypertension evidence of fatty liver disease (i.e., nonalcoholic fatty liver disease [NAFLD] or nonalcoholic steatohepatitis [NASH]) gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) refractory to medical therapy • A thorough multidisciplinary evaluation within the previous 12 months which includes ALL of the following:  a description of the proposed procedure(s)  documentation of failure of weight loss by medical management  unequivocal clearance for bariatric surgery by a mental health provider  a nutritional evaluation by a physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner or registered dietician I meet the 40 BMI and at least 3 of the criteria for the lower BMI. Initially I was extremely confident I would be approved, but even with reaching all their milestones, I don't trust them.
